NOOK for Android updated for tablets - Nook Color General

Looks like we not have a real use for the stock Nook Reader app much longer.
According to this the new tablet app can be used to read magazines.
http://gizmodo.com/5801689/nook-for-android-updated-for-tablets
I haven't had a chance to check this out yet on CM7 as I'm at work and my NC is at home. Anyone try it yet? Does it even see the NC running CM7 as a tablet and give us the right version?

Ive been using it since last night and it is freaking awesome. Do yourself a favor and dl ASAP.

I downloaded it and so far it's a little clunky. At first it didn't see any of my books, but then they showed up. Then I ordered the free trial of Maxim, but I don't see the magazine anywhere. Maybe it just takes a little getting used to but so far it's bugging me.

I couldn't find anything in the press release on gizmodo (but I scanned pretty quickly)... will it play read-to-me children's books?

My Analog subscription magazine now shows up on my C7 Nook App! Woohoo.
Time to re-subscribe!

Sweet.
Does it have the word lookup feature? Having a dictionary at my fingertips was awesome with the stock reader.

Is there a way to side load ebooks to the nook app?

For me the Nook Reader is very sluggish in the menus & I can only se my B&N downloaded books & mags. Nothing shows in My files & I have sideloaded several books. Quite a few FC, so I don't know what to think. I like the page turn animation a lot. Great feedback that the page was turned. MAybe I need to try to reinstall??
kev

book title and page number at top of page annoying, anyone know how can to get back to 2.5?

Can't find the app in market. Is there something I have to do/tweak first?
Using CM7.02 on NC...
Update: Market Enabler did the trick. Had to "be" in the US. Can't buy anything though, seems you have to have an US-creditcard as well. Workaround for this?

... Not true!
The Nook is open source so you can download any Epub book and read it on the nook. These can be from google books, nook app, moobi, etc. Also in the off chance thats not enough you can edit kindle books to read on the nook... Either or you got tons of options beyond just B&N store books
BE WARNED THOUGH...
you loose features loading a non B&N book, these include...
Cant be put on the home screen.
Is a hassle to get cover art (if possible, I couldnt get it to sync, but I also didnt try hard)
You cant share. with other people
You cant use the twitter/facebook fuctions
All other features should work if its an Epub
Awesome! Im going back to college and would like a tablet for my text books instead of carrying around heavy books. This sounds perfect. Thanks.

The Nook doesn't seem to handle large PDF files well if that is what your schoolbooks are. I conveted most of mine to epub using Calibre last semester to put them on my ipod touch, but it is something to be aware of.

How well does converting PDFs with pictures or a lot of symbols (science texts) to epub work? I would imagine that a lot of science textbooks would convert pretty poorly to epub because the pictures would get messed up?
Also, the non-OCR'd scans -- do they just convert as full page images in epub?

What about his statement was not true? You CAN put kindle on it once your rooted(I know I have done it)
Most of the time you don't even have to root, the default B&N reader uses Adobe DRM epub/pdf and most unsecured formats.... But imo 7" screens sucks for textbooks, most of them just aren't laid out for it.

[Q] Has anyone tried a comic viewer?

I'm on the very edge of getting a Gtab for general use. I currently have an Ideapad s10-3t with windows 7 but its just not setup for tablet use. The main reason I got the ideapad was to read comics. It does this very well but with the extra heft of the 8 cell battery it can get heavy after reading for a while. So, has anyone tried comic reader mobi or droid comic viewer on this thing?
You REALLY should PM Roebeet on this one if you don't hear from him!! If memory serves correctly that's his bag. He got suckered in and now we all force him to work on development stuff
I have a couple of comics I wanted to read but it was a pain to do on the iphone or touch so they sat for a few years. So last night I used Android Comic Viewer and it worked great. I noticed that it just loads all the comic files which is nice but it crashes or force closes after a bit. If there was a way to only load one at a time maybe that would solve the problem.
So when I did a search before I made this thread I searched for comic and not Comic. After doing a search for Comic I came up with a couple threads and one which covers my question : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=864442&highlight=Comic
I have been using the ComiXology reader for about 10 days now. I've only used it for free comics so far. I read there were issues trying to use it for paid comics, but some have had success sideloading purchased comics.
The reader works really well. I'm amazed how the graphics come to life...
Well i'm not Roebeet but I can vouch for ACV or Droid Comic Viewer, works well for me far as most files. I love old school comics like Frank Miller's "The Dark Knight Returns" and Howard Chaykin's "The Shadow"(1986 DC Ruled the comic book world). The only issue for me is crappy angled screen viewing, and that is a small issue. I havent tried the others however.
I was using Droid Comic Viewer until I started to get a lot of FCs and memory errors on some CBRs. I'm now using JJ Comic viewer and it's opened everything I've thrown at it including the ones that were FCing on Droid Comic Viewer.
Can you open .cbr or .cbz files in comixology? I downloaded it to my phone but didn't see an option to do that. Also does ACV or the other apps support rotating the comic?(not the app, the actual comic in the app).

I believe the ComiXology viewer only supports comics books downloaded/purchased through their site. I haven't purchased any comic books from their site to date. Many free comics are offered each week.
Mobi comic reader works well. Just tried the android comic viewer and I like it also.

Thanks for the responses. I think I'm going this weekend to my local Sears and picking one up. Now that the source has dropped this will make a nice new toy to keep me occupied for a while.
ACV will crash due to memory issues. If you go into setting and remove the advance load/buffer or whatever it will fix it. It's one of the best free reader IMO.
Comic Reader Mobi is the king, but it's like $15.
I use driod comic viewer for my cbr and cbz files. The low memory setting is under- settings>support> and check off low memory mode.

I agree, I've been using it since I heard about it last week or so and I've found it to be excellent overall. The range of free comics is awesome, most series have at least the first issue free, or a 10 page sample or similar. And the ones to buy are great too. The reading experience is very neat in general, the guided flow is a nice touch so you only see what is currently important; with options to view the full page though.
I've found a few small problems, it can get into a state where it displays a default 'image not found' logo for some pages; after contacting them they said it's simply an out-of-memory issue and that restarting the app/device should fix it. It did and after that first time I haven't seen it since. Also, on the topic of buying comics, yes I have a problem. I mostly read the comics on the GTab, not on my hero for obvious reasons; but cannot purchase comics from my tablet, I have to go to the app on my phone or the web, and then buy, and then log out and back in on my tablet before it'll let me download the new comics. This is obviously kind of annoying, but logging in and out is quick and painless so not too bad.
So yeah, there are problems, but for all of the ones I've mentioned I've submitted feedback to the company and for the first two (not showing pages, deleting comics I no longer wanted from my device) I received prompt feedback by the end of the day with info on how to resolve it and for the final two (not buying comics, having a sync button to avoid the log in/log out issue) they just said they're planning many improvements over the next year. In general, an excellent app and my new favorite. Because they do have an awesome library of comics. Atomic Robo! Sandman! More!
As for ACV, I tried it and it's a very nice, simple interface and worked well for me on the tablet. But I don't have as many .cbr and .cbv files as I used to so I don't use it much. I got most of mine pirated and thought it was time to go legit.
+1 for JJ Comic viewer. After testing a few different readers, this one seemed the most stable and easy to use. Just got an update for it today too, so development is ongoing.

I've tried this one out on TnT-Lite 4.1.0, and it stays up for a second but then FC's. If I'm in the settings menu, it'll FC and go back to the regular menu. If I wait a second, it'll FC out of that and send me back to the desktop. Was there anything in particular you did to make it stable? This is a new install of TNT-Lite, so I'm wondering if it might be something in Spareparts that's causing it.
Any help would be appreciated.

anyone using nook color with kindle app

considering nc, waiting on ces to see what is released in 7" formats...
looking for a ebook reader first, tablet second. have a mot droid, so was figuring android reader might be better than kindle.
Was wondering if anyone is using the nc with the kindle app, and if so, how it compared to using the kindle itself?
Also, is there a sticky thread of how to simply root the nc? In my brief search I found a thread 136 pages long, I was hoping there would be a simple 5 or 10 step process thread? thanks.
Don't see why you'd want to use the kindle app but I dont see why it wouldn't work...
http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_Rooting
There's also a sticky in the apps development section for nook color on this forum that has everything you need to know about rooting.
I'm using the Kindle app on my rooted NC. I'm doing so to avoid the possible reboot/reset issues when accessing the BN store from a rooted device.
However, I have never used a Kindle, so I can't compare the app to that device. The app is very fluid and readable, and I have no problems using it. I'm taking a long trip in a few weeks and will really get a chance to test it then.
The auto-nooter thread is long, but the process is nicely summarized in the first post. The one "gotcha" that tripped me up was in step 12 where you log in to YouTube. You *must* add "@gmail.com" at the end of your login id. Don't just use your base GMail or YouTube id (as I did), or you may have to repeat the whole process. The device will be rooted but Market won't work if you miss this key point (which is not in the first post, but it does show up farther down the thread).
So, don't be put off by the long thread. The thread got bloated somewhat with many of the same questions being asked & answered over & over.
I am using the Kindle app - don't know how it compares to a Kindle, 'cause I've never had one I used the Kindle app on my HD2 and Blackberry.
It seems comparable to the Nook app - read a book, turn pages, bookmark, press on a word to highlight or to look up, change font sizes, etc. etc.
As for rooting the Nook, just read the first post here. Follow directions. It's really a simple, step-by-step process.
The only snafu I had was trying to use winimage. Wouldn't work for me. Another kind soul pointed me to to the freeware version: https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/+download. This is the one that finally worked.
Otherwise, there were no hiccups trying to root.
Read the instructions. Read them again. Follow each step explicity. Worked for me and plenty of others here.
I use it exclusively and love it. I also have a kindle II that I have used for the past year.
There is no comparison, the NC running Kindle is much better IMO. I am holding my final opinion until I see how the battery life works out with daily use. So far so good.

Works fine for free books added directly with .mobi files but I can't get it to open purchased books sent from my Amazon account and that I was reading on my iPad. They show up ok in the list but it says it can't open them and they need to be removed and redownloaded...that doesn't help. Not sure what's up with that?
I have the Kindle app installed and it does work but I can not access the Amazon store through it. No matter what I try, it always gives me an error page when attempting to access Amazon's purchase/download portal. Side-loaded books work fine though.

Looks as the same problem I am having then, did you try sending the book from the Amazon Kindle website too? Wonder if you can take the book form an iPad and sideload it? DRM might be a problem.

OK. this sounds like a big problem. This is what I want to use the NC for. I should be able to purchase kindle books, and I should be able to read them on my pc, my droid, and my NC, especially my NC. Are you saying that this won't work, that you can't purchase books and read them on the NC?
Using the Kindle App and it works fine
First to the question why use the Kindle app on the Nook Color (other than the undeniable pleasure of being able to say I use both on the same device)--well, lots of ebooks are available from Amazon that aren't available anywhere else. It's true that I was unable to purchase a book directly from Amazon on my nook, but I did so on my Android phone and then synced the nook to my Amazon account, and it downloaded flawlessly. (Now if I could only get the Kindle book onto my nook's homescreen. That would be a real ---- you to B&N!)

Contrary to drwohl's experience, I was unable to get the Kindle app on my NC to sync with my Amazon account. I always get an error when I fire it up that it was unable to sync. My login info is correct, so I'm not sure what the issue is. Side-note, the Kindle store and sync both work on my Epic 4g *shrug*
I've only been able to use the Kindle app to read side-loaded content so far.
I've rooted the NC and love it, and use the Kindle app exclusively. You can't buy the books directly using the Kindle Store, but you just need to use the browser and buy the book there and it'll download it! You need to go to the Kindle app and go to Archived Items and Sync and they'll be there. You can then long press on the book and move it to Downloaded Books. Works great!!! Lovin' it.

Yes haven't been able to send a book successfully to my NC from the Amazon Kindle website so far, get an "can't read book error, remove and download", tried that, it didn't help. Not sure why, possibly a DRM issue.

Ok. just to make sure i understand this before i drop $250, if I buy my book via the amazon website rather than the kindle app, it will work? Get the book say when I am on my computer. Then on NC, go into kindle app, look in archived items, and do a sync, then I can read on NC?
To test this, I just downloaded a sample from Amazon's site, using Opera Mobile on my NOOKcolor, and it was sent to the Kindle app on my nook with no problems. Though it was only a sample, I can't see it being any different with a purchased book.
I had previously synced books I had previously purchased onto the nook without any problems.
Has anyone tested this with Dolphin HD, xscope, or other browsers?
So it looks like we can still purchase/sync books all on the device - just use the browser.
Got it to work for sample books but not for purchased books, see error message above.

Most imp tablet specific app needed?

Hi guys,
I really want to love the Xoom, I like android a lot and the hardware is too good (at least at this point)
But I not in place where I can drop my iPad for good. The reasons are pure app specific, if I get these decent on Xoom... it's bye bye iPad.
So this is a quasi-'need help' thread. to double check if I'm not missing anything
1. Magazine app - Something like Zinio, I depend too much on it and couldn't find even an ETA on when Zinio will be available for Android
~ Solved. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11939617&postcount=5
2. Comics reader - I know we have the Comics app but I need a cbr/cbz reader. I tired AVC but doesn't seam to work on Honeycomb
~ Solved. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11939617&postcount=6
3. A UI-nice IM app. I love the Gtalk app but need facebook and skype IM app
4. Netflix app.
5. Tablet specific twitter, facebook, foursquare apps. I know iPad doesn't have FB or FS apps but this would be nice
6. Now the big big deal... I consider all these tablets as a 'consumption' devices, and the biggest thing I 'consume' is movies and tv shows...
The best thing about iPad is, I just launch iTunes app then rent a movie, wait for sometime and then enjoy the movie...
Is there a way I can get this experience on a Xoom? I know that right now most of the HD formats play on tegra but is there any hope to get this?
~~~~~~~~~~
Disclaimer: Please don't pounce on this post and call me a iFreak. I'm not trying to diss the Xoom or Android. I did search and try apps to see if I could get all this... but couldn't find a way. So before I make a decision I just wanted some opinions.
thanks
A Market app that works...
Searches properly so you can find those Apps you want that may exist but you would never know.
Recognizes applications that have updates properly.
Doesn't randomly open other app's.
Actually installs Apps the first time you ask for them.
And why Google is at it, Tablet Section - more direct support on the Web Market while the programmer who is assigned to the tablet market app figures out how to code - bug fix.
(yes I am frustrated with the market today)
I don't remember if manga watcher loads cbz and crz files but in general it is really good app. It was recently updated to load local files from sd so it might be worth checking out. I know the dev does alot of work and updates it frequently. You might even write him and ask if he plans to add support for these files if they aren't already supported. I bought the full app and have been happy with it ever since.
All I have to say is Samurai Executioner.
Aldiko vs GBooks vs Kindle vs Nook readers?
I've always used Aldiko, but it seems to be chopping the first line on each page. Can anyone else comment on their preferred reader apps? I'd prefer an app thats not associated with a content provider, but am open if the app can read non-provider books from my own collections.
I read on a post somewhere here that setting margins to 70 and text to 16 (IIRC) should sort the problem on Aldiko. Don't have mine yet so can't confirm.
Kindle. Locked downish and not landscape friendly, but probably best selection and most relaible.
Nook. Awesome but needs some honeycomb improvements. Probably most promising. Can read epub books.
GBooks. Solid, can sideload, not sure I love it though.
I use all four and that's what I love about options. Most of my content is on Kindle since I own/use a kindle device as well.
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
use moon+ reader, looks great on xoom. You shall give it a try
I'm a big fan of the Nook software. Can side load epubs from your own collection. Works really well in landscape or portrait.
My Xoom sent this...
Does any of these have the fancy shmancy page turning effects? Not necessary but it'd keep me away from using Google Books on the Xoom once I get mine.
I'm using Aldiko on my Nexus one, and I love it to bits but no fancy animation though.
I have tried all of the above and find Coolreader to be the best. it has various customization options that make it the best reader for me
Left tap to turn page forward (use swipe to go back)
adjustable margins
Swipe down on left margin to reduce brightness (stanza feature that i super lover on ipad)
Lock screen orientation in the app. that way I dont have to lock orientation at system level
Opens epubs directly from Dropbox
In aldiko bring up the menu, settings, text, and increase the margin by one. That will fix your problem on the xoom if that is your only reason to switch.
Personally I use all 4 of the apps depending on what I an reading.
- all 4 can sideload as long as your book is in a supported format.
- I prefer the kindle app for reading technical texts. It has the best options for markup which is useful for reference material and studying.
- the nook app also has markup but not as good as the kindle. I find the nook store to be a little more intrusive but not too bad.
- Google reader is fine for reading fiction and such but the inability to do markup limits its utility for me. For straight reading though I like it.
Aldiko I won't bother giving the highlights to since you use it currently. I would probably settle down on using just aldiko and kindle but sometimes a particular book is only available in a different store.
The Nook software does have page turn effects. Looks just like turning a real page. OK... maybe not JUST like it... but close.
Thanks everyone for your feedback!
I've been using the nook lately as it supports my personal collection, and i can still use it for the books i buy
my issue with nook
- i get force closes quite often not during reading, just when exiting a book, or the app itself.
- no hooks into free books from places like project gutenberg
my issues with adilko
- it runs a background service for some reason, dunno if this is a really valid complaint, but no other reader software does this
- the landscaped page turn is just ugly
- can't read my purchased collection
my issues with kindle
- if im going to be buying books from somewhere I want to buy them from somewhere I can can buy in person and online... browsing through a bookstore is fun
- can't read my collection
- no hooks into free books from places like project gutenberg
my personal problem with moon reader
- too lazy to learn all the neat features
- can't read my purchased collection
Just tried nook on my Android phone. I can side load epubs but the book covers don't show up on the library...
Kindle. Locked downish and not landscape friendly, but probably best selection and most relaible.
Nook. Awesome but needs some honeycomb improvements. Probably most promising. Can read epub books.
GBooks. Solid, can sideload, not sure I love it though.
I use all four and that's what I love about options. Most of my content is on Kindle since I own/use a kindle device as well.
You say you can side load on GBooks?? Could someone explain how??? I so far can only get books from the market on there...
That was me and I was wrong. Sorry for the misinformation. Kindle, nook, and aldiko can sideload but evidently not Google reader.
darn really wish you could...
I like FBReader myself. Nice simple layout that reads pretty much everything, with color and text options.
I really liked FBReader, but it doesn't seem to keep text formatting for italics and such. Using Aldiko now, but the margins problem on the xoom is annoying. Hate having to have them so high, looks awful on the large screen.
The nook app seems to be the winner for me. It's really easy to load epubs, no converting or anything and they look good. The only downside is that it will FC when you stop reading a book, though it does seem to bookmark properly. Just a minor annoyance.
I would prefer to use the native Gbooks app but without sideloading it's pretty much useless to me.
