JS3 is the newest one available. Samfirmware.com is the best place to get stock ROMs.
If you want to put a custom ROM on the phone, look here. This page also has very good how-to's on rooting your phone, flashing your phone, putting CWM recovery on it, etc. Recommended reading.
Each custom ROM will their own instructions for installing them.

Yea thanks knew js3 is latest just waiting for.docs and stefunels kitchen to support it!
I was more asking about the upgrade route to take from jm5 to jpx, did it months ago on my phone but as ive flashed so.many.roms and kernels i cant remember the best route!
Thanks.for the info tho! Gives me summin to read on commute to work lol

[Q] restore captivate to factory

I have a samsung captivate that i have updated to the leaked 2.2 froyo and needless to say it is a very nice beta version but i am looking foward to the official release my question is there anyone out there that can tell me how to flash everything back to orignal so i will be able to get the OTA update of the official 2.2 froyo noob here in desperate need of help
Sending you over that area.
Cheers,
What is it with all these noobs flashing to 2.2 without knowing how to go back before they start?
Is it some kind of epidemic taking hold? I just don't get it.
How do you start something with no idea how to get back?
Get odin one click jf6 or jh7. You can find them on the forum

Take a deep breath. Ok, there is a decent chance that the over the air update wont work for you no matter what you do. That is the bad news. Good news is that it will be available on this site almost immediately after it is out.
What rom did you flash and why are you so desperate to get rid of it? You jumped in the pool might as well learn how to swim

I flashed the leaked 2.2 rom got it off xda site figured it would be about as easy to do as jailbreaking an iphone but ill admit i couldnt have been more wrong well anyway this leaked ji6 rom has its cool parts but my phone has problems with freezing up now and various occasional hiccups tried the one click flash to stock but that made it worse so back to ji6 i went guess its too late now but just wish i could go back to stock now :-(

Amazing ain't it... Shows how anxious they all are or how little they research these things. I waited quite some time before flashing any roms on my Sprint Hero and once the 1 click rooting became available went over at least 2 dozen different roms intently before flashing CM6 and any additional oc kernels. That phone was a walk in the park compared to this one since you could revert back 100% stock with a current RUU apk.
I wonder whats going to happen when they don't release 2.2 and go straight to Gingerbread in December...how many bricked phones will there be...?

[Q] Flashing my new phone

So I just got my replacement phone, and it came stock with the kb1 froyo build. My previous captivates all came with 2.1, various builds, and was able to flash roms easily.
My question is this...is there anything I need to be aware of that's different when flashing with a kb1 build phone? I just don't want to mess anything up and void my warranty for good.
Also, I did a little bit of searching, but does anybody know of a thread with how to flash back to the stock kb1 build in case I need to return my phone again for some reason? If so, a link would be greatly appreciated.
I know these are probably stupid questions, but if you guys can provide some insight without flaming, that would be great.

Does nobody know this? I'm really itching to flash a custom rom, it's been too long since my last one.

Search is your friend. There must be a dozen threads on this. Best bet is to Odin back to stock 2.1 and proceed from there. 2.2 has a different recovery scheme that makes it a little more complicated. Read the sticky in Dev on how to flash a custom ROM.

Oh boy.... Another one of these threads.
Short answer.... PICK one, they are all better than stock. There are so many roms out there that only YOU can judge what you want and need in a rom.
Everyone will have a different answer for you. For instance I say Firefly, but only because it works for me
You can't go wrong choosing any of them.

Anything other than JI6, that leaky rom is junk.
Caution swyping! Read at your own risk.

That is unanswerable every single phone is different, and people have widely different tastes. The trick is finding a rom that works best FOR YOU.

dude, youre takin this a little too seriously, im just lookin for a good suggestion to start with, and i know every phone is different, thats why i put what phone i have. thanks
LMAO........
The suggestions are to try them out yourself........
They are all better than stock........
You have to figure it out for yourself..........
And he meant that every Captivate is different.......If you did some more reading...you would know what he meant........
The "all in one place" is the first 3 pages of the dev section........http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=706 any thread that starts with [ROM] is what your looking at
if you want a fast rom i would recommend the cyanogen mod 7.
people talk about how its unstable and has bad battery life
but its all wrong,,,
from my experience cm7 has been a stable like all the other roms but just faster..
It's the fastest you'll ever get right now and it has all different customization you can do.
so try it out.
Might want to try cm6 its outdated but fast and more reliable

ya, any file i put on the root of the phone gives me the same answer, whether its cwm or update.zip
You have 3E recovery.
The easiest way to get around it is to Flash the .tar version of speedmod with the full version of odin.
This only works on 2.2 If you need any more help. I will be around for a bit.

good answer! but if you are on 2.1 you can put the new rom on the sd card first and then flash speedmod. it wont boot into the rom but will give you recovery to flash the new rom.
yes, no need to root just odin flash speedmod then flash a rom.
if you want complete and reliable and well polished then flash andromeda, it's a bit older version of 2.2 but the work was great.
if you want super fast flash something that says js8, i hear the paragon rom has a great kernel. id say cm7 but maybe you should work up to that, it isn't hard but you need odin to flash back if you have problems, there aren't any 2.2 kernels or roms with the proper update script and binary to be flashed from the recovery that cm7 uses.

Nice. That makes sense that it will work.
OCLF (one click lagfix) use ext2. Titanium or some system app remover app to get rid of bloat and you should be good to go. At the end of the day different ROMs and such are for asthetics... no one has over 340 mg of Ram available so performance not much different from one to the next once lagfix installed. Until you OC/UV and that is tuff to maintain stability with.
Now we all know that there are no "Best Rom" threads but sense this one has changed course ill leave it open.
Each rom runs differently for each person. This is due to the many different ways we each use our phones. Once you get the hang of it, try out a few and find your favorite. Good luck on your quest.

Questions pertaining to specific roms should be asked in their thread. Most times you're not the only one that's had that problem and it's already been addressed. That translates into search and read.

Flashing a gingerbread ROM?

Hi, I've had my vibrant for quite a while it's been rooted ever since day 1. However I just got got Clockwork Mod working on stock 2.2 KA6. I'm now ready to flash a 2.3or 2.3.4 ROM and I wanted to know how do I go about it. I not sure if I can just flash over the stock 2.2 or not. I also hope I wouldn't have to resort to ODIN, as every one of my last several experiences with it was not good at all. Someone please help me out!
Read the first post of the rom you want to flash. This should answer your questions. You do not need to odin before flashing any gb roms that I am aware of. Just remember you can't go back to froyo without doing odin. (also this belongs in q&a or general). Good luck!

yes u can go from froyo to gb. maybe all of the gb roms that are around explicitly say that u can and how to. it is easy, there are youtube videos on how to do it. About odin, I try to use it every time I change rom, it has never given me any trouble or problem, you just gotta have the right files.
maybe this post should go on another forum though..
only a year old and already so grown up...my my how the time has flown by in the vibrant section. no flaming or "WRONG SECTION" comments...nice work guys
they grow up so fast :'-)

[Q] Will superoneclick work on Bell i9000m?

This is my girlfriends phone and it's really slow, it's completely stock and non-updated (Froyo)
If not, what is my easiest choice? I spent all morning searching this forum and i can't find anything concrete to help me make a decision.
Also, once rooted, which kernel and rom would be suggested. Something close to stock because she doesnt know much about playing with the OS.
On Froyo superoneclick WILL work.
If you ever go to GB, then it will NOT work. FYI if you ever toto GB you will want to use a Chainfire method to root...
