Voodoo Kernel Please help - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Please I need help.
I flashed an i9000 ROM and I qm having orientation issues and they told me to flash a captivate kernel to fix this.
the ROM already comes with a voodoo kernel with a voodoo lag fix enabled can I just flash the captivate voodoo kernel over this without disabling the lag fix considering they are the same kernel and lag fix?
Please help do not want to mess up anything.

The best advice I've heard for this is to backup everything, that way if you do mess something up, you have only lost an hour's time.
As far as flashing one kernel over another, I do it all the time, but I would check specifically on the two kernels. See if anyone has done what you are considering.

Or just pick one of the ROM's on the captivate forum that is i9000 based, That way it will work for sure.

Speedmod and Voodoo (Darkys)

Hey i guys I have a serious question hoping yall can help.
I am currently run Darkys v8 with the Voodoo 5 lag fix enabled.
Recently if your a Darkys fan as my self and I love v8 but when v8.1 becomes stable for the Captivate it will contain the new Speedmod Kernel.
I read both on Darkys forum that it is unnescessary to disable the voodoo lag fix when flash over the new 8.1.
As well as on the Speedmod FAQ they state that Speedmod and Voodoo are using the same filing system therefore you dont need to disable the lag fix.
Im just asking you guys if you could give me your experiences and if its really neccessary to disable lag fix then flash the new version of Darkys. (i.e. Voodoo Lag Fix 5.0 --->Speedmod Kernel)
Final note if something were to go wrong lets say with 8.1 because I did not disable the lag fix. This isnt anything a nandroid backup couldnt restore?
Thanks for any help in advance
Im using serindipity, but it had voodoo as well and I flashed speedmod over it just fine. A nandroid backup wouldn't fix it if it broke though, nandroid only does files, and the formatting is what's changing.

Ya I just figured that out.
But to be on the safe side I just disabled Voodoo.
Backed up kernel with SGS Kernel Flasher
Flashed Speedmod for the battery life and performance.
And also so when the v8.1 does go stable for the Captivate Im not going thru any troubles with changing kernels or lag fixes as 8.1 will have the same exact kernel and lag fix.
So if I were to ever have problems with kernels Id just restore my back ups I have it figured out now.
Thanks anyways
I'm using Perception 10.1 and I flashed SpeedMod straight over Voodoo5 without any issues, but like others have said, disabling it would be the safest bet.

[Q] Rogers Captivate Voodoo LagFix

Am I able to install the Voodoo lag fix on my Captivate? I know the AT&T version is supported but I rather not brick my device. Please respond!
Thanks,
Androidfann
I have a Rogers Captivate, and I have used Voodoo for a while.
Make sure you have root access, and go nuts. It really does improve the quality.
have u used voodoo with 2.2?
i just got the captivate and am now on stock 2.2 with root and oclf installed. is it worth changing to voodoo?

OCLF uses ext2, which is less safe than ext4, which is used by Voodoo. If you want Voodoo, flash the JJ4 + Voodoo kernel in the dev section.

Depends. The newer Kernals really unlock a lot of features that we didn't have before, and you don't have now.
If you use your phone as your media player, than the benefits of Voodoo sound were enough to make me switch.
hey guys, i got the official rogers 2.2, can i still use voodoo? what good roms use rogers 2.2 as a base and include voodoo? any suggestions?
Hey folks, another Canadian Rogers Captivate user here...just wanted to confirm if I can use the Voodoo stable 5.4.1 for Froyo 2.2.1 as it looks like I'm on 2.2 stock (and rooted)? I'm new to android and a bit scared, but the Voodoo fix seems easy enough..
No one seems to be answering the main question posed here.
For us STOCK Rogers froyo users which version of voodoo should we use?
I am not running a custom rom, I have not used Odin (used Kies to install official froyo update). I can't seem to find a version of voodoo lagfix specifically for stock Rogers 2.2. If anyone e has it installed can you point us in the right direction?

Hi there to all asking about Voodoo for Rogers,
I have tried suckerpunch (based on speedmod)
Also tried the newest speedmod 13c
No problems with either.
I personally have tried voodoo (5.4.1 and the one for att captivate) with no luck at all.

People have been using the SpeedMod kernel which is the Rolls Royce of kernels; it enables a lot of the Captivates features and power. However, the Kernel is based on the i9000 kernel, which is the sister handset to the Captivate. The kernels are compatible across both phones, but the stock modems on captivates don't seem to do as well with some setups; you'll see this in the sprawling thread dedicated to that topic. Some people will flash an i9000 modem as well, and people seem to have varying results with different combinations.
Having said that, if you don't want to use bluetooth, the stock modem is perfectly serviceable. You could go ahead and flash your SpeedMod kernel and see vast improvements is phone function without tweaking in the handset's general recovery menu. There's also plenty there to keep the tweaksters busy
However, new to the scene is the same developers amalgam of his voodoo lagfix in a stock Rogers Froyo kernel. I'm running it now and I am still testing and checking things, but it seems fine though. There are some caveats to respect though, I just spent nearly an entire day getting my phone back to Stock Froyo after doing a bad job of 'un'lagfixing before flashing kernels. However, if it's your first endeavour into flashing or modifying your phone's software, it would be a relatively safe bet. You should not have any lagfix installed nor should you even think about doing it without doing a Titanium Backup of your phone, which would mean rooting.
Hope that helps a bit.
Clemmei.. I saw in the description of your phone that has the official version of Gingerbread 2.3.3 AT&T Gingerbread in your captivate ... How did you install, by odin? There is a 1-click Gingerbread UCKF1 thread in the dev forum. Thats what I am currently running and its working well so far.. The only issue I have is my GPS is crap.. but it was crap with stock froyo aswell so no big deal there.
I'm on the rogers i896 also.

It's sort of officially unofficial. It would seem to be a prebuild for a forthcoming Gingerbread release, it's tight and a great daily driver.
I did use Odin; follow the usual safety procedures and all will be well. The modem that comes with the package is great, but my 4G no longer works, it's 3G for now, but I got terrible 4G speeds anyway, so there's not much of a downgrade there.
The GPS did not function so great straight away, but I keyed in the code *#3214789650# - Settings - SUPL Settings, and changed the server to supl.google.com and the server port to 7276. I got much better results from that configuration.
Hope that helps!
Thanks for the help of gps friend ... I have it installed and this great .. But you have some voovoo installed, can not find any on the net .. The voodoo 5.5.x served me just to change the start GTI9000, I do not like .. Thanks for your help..

[Q] Kernel / Wolfson DAC: not sure what to do

I have installed COG 3.03 and find it great.
I want to unleash the power of the Wolfson DAC , and for that it seems I need a compatible kernel. When I installed the Voodoo App I got the message to do so.
Now I have search many, many, many threads, and I am MORE confused if anything; can someone point me towards the correct (and clear! 100 pages long threads make it very confusing to see what is the consensus) info for the following questions:
Which kernel should I choose?
How do I install it?
Do I HAVE to change my modem if I change the kernel?
Will the kernel swap have any incidence on future ROM choice I might do?
Will changing the kernel do anything to my reception (which is super great)?
Any help is appreciated; again, I tried understanding what to do by myself like a big boy, but I got to read so many threads in some many directions, that I can't make a clear choice....
Samsung Galaxy S
Firmware 2.2
Baseband I896UXJL1
Kernel 2.6.32.9
Cognition 3.03. Update 2
Hmmm, isn't this what Supercurio is doing with his kernel drivers? Some kernels in here already have supercurio's code in, and you also need to use the app he made.
I think almost all recent kernels support it. If it says supports voodoo sound there you go. Try hardcores kernel.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Supercurio's audio thread has a link to all the kernels with Voodoo Sound. You can also just look for the phrase "Voodoo sound" in the short description.
Unfortunately, AFAIK every Voodoo sound kernel for Captivate is i9000/i9010-based, which means you'll have to switch modems (and lose bluetooth calls, unless you also switch to a different ROM) as well.
I'm sort of amazed no one put this and BLN into the native-Captivate Rogers Froyo source yet. DG said he had a test version of this combo *weeks* ago, but no release thread. And somehow no other kernel devs are interested...
Oh yeah, someone will kill this thread im sure cause it doesn't belong here. Should be in q and a.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Yeah, I see this thread being moved or locked soon.
I run Cognition 3.04 with hardcore's speedmod kernel, which has the Voodoo Sound 4 drivers in it. I use the T959D TLJL3 modem which gives me great reception and killer data speeds.
When you flash a new ROM, you'll probably be wiping and reinstalling everything anyway, so chances are you would have to flash whatever kernel/modem flavor you choose again anyway.
So:
Which kernel should I choose?
Any REORIENTED i9000 kernel with Voodoo Sound 4 will do.
How do I install it?
Most of them have the option to use either Odin or Clockworkmod Recovery. Since you're already using Cognition, make sure the Clockworkmod Recovery that you use has RED FONT. If you're installing the speedmod kernel it will be GREEN FONT thereafter.
Do I HAVE to change my modem if I change the kernel?
Since you're probably going to be flashing a reoriented i9000 kernel, i9000 modems will work best. I've had no problem running the JJ4 Captivate modem, but others have. Also, like I said above, the T959D TLJL3 modem is great.
Will the kernel swap have any incidence on future ROM choice I might do?
See above.
Will changing the kernel do anything to my reception (which is super great)?
This is certainly more affected by your modem than your kernel. I haven't seen kernels have any great effect on this.
HOWEVER, it's worth mentioning that i9000 kernels will chew up more battery than Captivate ones. Don't count on more than 20 hours of battery life... if you can even get that on a stock phone, LOL.
To flash a new kernal you can either use CWR or SGS kernal flasher from the market to install it. You do not have to change the modem when you change the kernal and when it comes to picking one that will work with voodoo you can usuall find that out in the original post.

[Q] Need help understanding modifications

Hello!
I've been trying to find out is it possible to flash roms/mods if I have flashed voodoo kernel? I flashed it few days ago and phone goes like racing car
I'm not completely newbie, but what comes to android hacking... I haven't found out few things like: What's the difference between mods, roms and kernel. Well... For example.. Can I flash tw4 if I've flashed voodoo kernel?
I don't need "how to" answers just I'd like to know more about these things.
Allso.. If someone knows websites telling huge amounts of info about these things please ad those too
Thanks.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
you can install TW4 if you are on a samsung based ROM,
samsung apps will not work with ROMS such as Cyanogen and MIUI.
And you dont need to remove lagfix unless moving ROM or Kernel, if you are just updating to a newer version, its not necessary.
the best place to find your answers is here on XDA, you would be surprised what comes from the search bar
Thank you for the answer.
I tried to find answers with search. Some I found sme I didn't..
I cannot find info about project voodoo's voodoo kernel 5.5. Is it just lagfix and can I flash darky's rom without deleting/uninstalling voodoo lagfix?
I didn't find voodoo on roms list so I think it's not rom?
I'm asking becouse I findout that darkys rom... Well darkys voodoo seems very nice but it uses same kernel modifications as voodoo kernel but has much more modifications (improved gallery etc. etc.) I'm asking this becouse I really like voodoo lagfixs voodoo sound improvements....
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
yeah, voodoo is the kernel.
but darkys roms come with voodoo kernel built in, you can select this using his 'DarkyROM' app found in the market (free), you select what you want, i.e boot animation, theme, kernel, added extras. Hit save and then flash his rom and it will do the rest for you.
If you want to use darkys ROM 9.2 or higher. Flash his resurrection ROM via odin, and that will give you the base package to move upwards
Oh right! Tanks!
It really seems I'm quite newbie
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
we all was at one time, dont worry about it.
The key thing when doing any sort of modifications is be sure you know what your doing. and always have a backup plan.
That's right. It's why I have not done rom flashes or anything else before getting enough info. Tough I've heard that!"while doing you'll learn" but sgs is too expensive to do such experiences.
Thanks for all the answers!

[Q] What kernel is safe for German ICS 4.0.3 XXLPY?

Hi guys,
So I read the threads that warn us about the bricking problem from official XXLPY. And they also told us to flash another safe kernel right away to avoid anything bad happen. But I could not find anything about which kernel is safe to use with this rom (except some said to flash GB kernel, and I assume they don't work with ICS?). So I'm wondering if anyone please guide me to a kernel that is usable with XXLPY (how to guide would be preferred ?
I do not know too much about kernels so all I'm trying to do is to stay away from bricking and get CWM to run on my ICS note.
Thank you very much in advance,
Anyone?

Thank you guys, I just flashed franco r3 kernel. Could not tell if the problem was fixed, but now i'm left with a non-wifi galaxy note everytome i try to connect it just stays at "obtaining IP address...". And I found out that some others are aloso having the same problem as I do. Hoping for some help here cause I can't flash speedmod kernel (Idid but after reboot it's still Franco??? )
Use static IP address and it will work.
