[Q] What is a TIB? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Now I am not talking TiB with I think means Titanium Backup...
I sent my Captivate in for a warranty repair (camera had artifacts on the lens). On the latest status update of the repair they state that 3 items were replaced:
"REPLACED TIB,CAMERA AND BATTERY"
So... anybody know what a TIB is

"Throw it Back" yelled the crowd when I caught the other teams home run

It's a circuit board.

Touch Input Board?

No idea, but I sent my phone in for random shutdowns and they replaced the TIB also. Since I got it back (24hrs granted...) the problem seems to be fixed. Was getting a shutdown every 4hrs or so before.

Not sure exactly what the TIB component is but this is Samsung's Official fix for the random shutdown issue.
My Captivate has been solid for over 7 weeks since the "TIB" component was replaced.

lol, best answer in thread!
In all seriousness I think Touch Input Board is a likely candidate, but I would like to know the official definition.

The phone is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. If I get any more information I will post here.

I just got my phone back. Working camera and it looks like I have a new MAC address, too!
Since the MAC address is hard-coded into the hardware I assume that the TIB has something to do with that.

You're sure it's YOUR phone and not a replacement?

Yep. Has the same exact bubble on the screen protector. Not to mention the same label on the inside with the S/N.

Wow, crazy. I wonder if changing the MAC address is related to the new TIB (whatever that is) or if they reset it through software?

Not sure. Why I think it is related to the TIB is because I did an Oden flash before sending my phone to Samsung. The WiFi worked before I sent in the phone.
When I got it back I spent a good 30 minutes trying to figure out how to connect the phone on the WiFi again Including another Oden flash. I eventually realized I should see if the MAC address changed (I have a MAC access list on my router) because the phone could find the SSID, but could not connect.
Sure enough it was a different MAC address.

Wow, wild. Maybe the TIB is related to the hardware side of the modem/radio and opposed to software. Either way, glad you got it fixed.

Sent my Captivate in after fully bricking it (shhh, don't tell Samsung ) and this same thing came up. Hopefully this fixed it (didn't say anything either way, just said it was replaced).

TiB is a Tebibyte or 2^40 bytes or 1,099,511,627,776 bytes. Maybe they installed the new prototype 1 TB microSD card in your Captivate.

[Q] "Social" Settings says Invalid Parameter

Hi all,
In the Settings menu, under social, since upgrading to 1.0.1 and rooting, I now get an "invalid parameter!" error. Under 1.0 and root, I did not have this error and was able to link my Google account. Has anyone else had this issue, and if so, what did you do to resolve it.
Thanks
Kim
Having the same issue. +1 to looking for anyone with any knowledge on how to resolve.
I had same issue. I unrooted, did a factory rest and it was still there. I updated firmware...still there. RE-rooted...still there. Un-rooted, called support, and after an hour on the phone following their instructions I was told to return it to the store (within return period).
I have updated firmware and rooted this one with no problem with the Social section under Settings.

Interesting. I also have the same problem in my 1.0.1 rooted version. but I haven't had this problem in my 1.0.0 versions (both stock & rooted) of my NC.
I hope that this will not be a hardware problem...
I just noticed mine is doing the same thing after rooting. Does anyone else experience this problem?

My girlfriend just got off the phone with tech support cause of this problem. Her nook was working awesome after the update but she had to do a factory reset for another issue and when it came back on, thats when she saw invalid parameters. Long story short, they couldnt resolve the issue and they're making her mail her nook back so she can get a new one. Oh and her nook was never rooted so this problem isn't just for the rooted nooks.
+1 worked initially but at some point since rooted 'invalid parameters' is all that appears now.
none of the usual solutions (unroot, reset, wipe, etc) have made a scrap of difference. Maybe a settings file somewhere on the device that doesn't get replaced after reset/wipe which is hard to believe. Only way to find it might be to compare to stock NC with/without the problem.
I haven't noticed any other issues though. Perhaps the problems lies in a cookie or session type ID that is linked to the nook but resides on the servers.
hoping someone smarter than me (not difficult) finds an answer.
Same problem here. Firmware 1.0.1 with autonook. The message will show even after complete format. I called customer support and after 10 minutes the guy told me that his supervisor informed him that several people are calling with the same problem an that the issue will be resolved with an update in the future. I'm going for an exchange anyway.
if anybody has it working on a rooted 1.0.0 or a 1.0.1 version can you use ADB and pull the /data/data/com.bn.nook.social folder and possibly post it up here?
My nc is rooted on 1.0.1 and Social does the error thing, and this is what the above file contains:
databases/
recommendations.db
webview.db
webviewCache.db
No other folders in the main one or anything. I think there should be a shared_prefs folder out there...
Check the files first for any sensitive password info!
- Will.
Mine started doing this after my last reset, so I upped it back to 1.0.1 and it still continued. I figured I did it with the root, but then I asked the guy at the store if he had heard of it. He said that they have had a few complaints about it, and that only a few of the devices with the issue had been rooted. So, it seems it has something to do with the original firmware.
He seems to think that if you setup Social, then reset and deregister, the setting isn't getting cleared (the guy is pretty savvy at our store). He has been keeping an unofficial tally, and said that he will ask others that have the problem if they did the same thing.
I agree, that sounds like the sequence of events that led to it happening for me.
I exchanged my unit about 2 weeks ago, rerooted to 1.0.1 and it still works as of today (knock on wood).
One thing I do remember before the problem, is the fact that I had task manager setup to kill the social app. Maybe this corrupted something inside the file system and led to the problem.

Help! No Data and wifi Error

Hello all.
Ive searched (and unless I have no idea what i'm searching for) i can't seem to find an answer. I tried forum searches, browing through hundred of pages, and maybe its just me. Brain might be exhausted but here it goes. If it has already been solved then thank you in advance.
I HAD the VZW tab currently running the 2.5 alpha CDMA. After playing with it for a while I decided to go back to stock firmware because I wanted my 3g. The weird part was after factory reset and everything my baseband is now unknown and it can't pick up a signal. When i click on wifi I just get an error message. I tried a complete going back to originial stock with no root as per (i forgot to attach the link to the thread) but i still do not have service.
Under mobile networks (where there should be an option for GSM/CDMA/AUTO, that option is not there.
The activate with Verizon option isn't available that is supposed to be above wireless and networks.
Ive done factory resets, wipes, uninstalling voodoo, tried to updated modem.bin but it keeps failling.
Any suggestions?
Okay i managed to figure out wifi. I guess my mac address changed and i was using mac filtering on my router. Didnt know that address changes. Anyways anyone know how to get data back? I feel its in my modem.bin file but it keeps failing when i uploaded one that i found from a VZW tab
same issue I have
Wow I have same issue as your. Expect it is Sprint Tab. My tab couldnt pick up a signal and i tried to reuploading Modem.bin but it fail too. Let hope we have a solution
wow would not expect the mac address to change after a flash, I know that you can make it appear different >:¬}h
Had the same issue with phone, and had to manually input the ap settings from the carrier, but that was it, sorry for stating the obvious but did you try this?
The iemi and the mac adress can be changed by flashing. The data is in the system/efs folder.

I experienced the same with my SGS (GSM), though I also changed the CSC. All that was required to solve it was to manually reenter the APs.

I guess I felt that way too because i really only filtered computers at the house and no matter how many times i formatted I always had the same MAC address. Glad that I figured that one out so I at least can use my SGT in wifi mode. Now the issue is trying to get my data back on (Verizon) since I'm paying for it. *sigh*

I did but no one had any information to give. I was transferred 3 times. Oh well. Since I am practically running a wifi tab Ill just re update to HC Alpha 2.5 just because I like the interface better. Hopefully if someone can find a fix ill take it.

Nowhere else to turn. Please try to help me fix Google Music!

For months Google Music hasnt been able to 'identify my computer'. This will happen regardless of internet connectivity. I was able to upload some music when it first launched and I received an invitation then for seemingly no reason, the program cant identify my computer. I can pull the ethernet cable and have zero connectivity and Ill receive the same error.
I dont have any virtual machines or anything like that, that I know of. And Im directly connected via hardwire. Any info or screenshots that I can provide to help diagnose, I will.
This has been problematic for months and I would love to resolve the issue even if I dont use google music on my phone. Although I would if it worked... Thanks for any positive insight!

Thanks for the response. Seems like I'm logged in and that there arent any issues.
I can play music from the website as seen in the second screen...Im scouring the site for other settings...
The settings screen looks good...only 204 songs uploaded before I wasnt able to upload
Edit: fourth screen shows the generic google message. Now if I can identify why google music would be recognizing a virtual machine, that would be nice
If you're still having no luck use the "Report a problem" button.
I've found when things break in regards to the ebooks I've purchased Google is very responsive.
Also posting on the google forums their developers may respond to your issue
Have you tried uninstalling and re-installing the program on your computer?

Yes. And in my experience, google support sucks. I need an order number to talk to anybody but I dont buy music from google. Email support is useless telling me that they dont support virtual machines even though I'm certain there is no trace of a vm on this pc. although i could be wrong, so thats what im trying to figure out.

The first time I logged on and uploaded what I could, I was tethering with my 3g. Then along came wifi and it hasnt worked since then. So, technically the only that changed should have been my isp, maybe mac address.
I cant even log in with any other email address to upload music into an alternate google account.
Ive attempted altering the mac address but either Im not doing it correctly, the changes arent sticking or it just doesnt work as a fix. I appreciate your help.

Ok, so there is the problem. Your Google Music account was created using one IP/Mac address, and now you're trying to access it with another. This is a restriction set by Google. You can always create a new account from your wifi connection. Aside from contacting Google about this issue, there is no other immediate remedy.

[Q] Tab updates service providers?

Geez, I read the sticky in General and still ended up putting a question there. Sheesh. Apologies.
So, I have an original i987 ATT GTab 7 that I somehow got to GB a year or so ago, but it doesn't save settings consistently, loses my xfinity and yahoo mail account info, doesn't run half the apps I had under Froyo, and has some residual Skype config stuff from install on Froyo that won't let me install or run Skype anymore. Also, the wifi stack has always been sketchy. I also unlocked the Tab and managed to run it on another provider in China. I tried to root recently with SuperOneClick 2.3.3 and it pops up a window "SuperOneClick has stopped working..." I know how to set to USB debug and used Sideloader until ATT finally opened up the markets. I tried reloading the drivers and still get an exclamation mark.
The question is: does anyone do upgrades for a fee?
What I'm looking for is to enable the dialer, get the best wifi stability, have 3g data, the newest stable OS, have my apps run and be able to use it on ATT and Straight Talk (got the SIM already) for data, voice, and messaging.
I can recommended overcome method (see my signature for links)
With at&t stock modem and correct APN, you can go all the way to jellybeans if you want, and gel 3g and dialer.
The actual dialing though, is a problem. At&t knows you are a tablet, from their list of IMEI, and you likely can't dial on tablet plan.

So, will the Overcome 7 wipe give me a functional dialer (assuming the provider allows a call), or do I need to load the wifi fix or stock theme version? And what do those do differently from the wipe version?
Thanks,
Dan
No need those.
wifi fix is for those who has issue of wifi disconnecting.
stock theme version is for those who want it to look like Samsung stock.
Yes, if the provider allows making call, it will work fine.
I guess I didn't read your initial problem properly.
But tab not saving settings properly or can't get rid of old info, is a sign of internal nand chip going bad...
If that is so, you will have more problem ahead of you.
Hope it isn't the case.

Oh, great. Well, it's all done now, apparently successfully, just need to go to Straight Talk.
So, this NAND chip. Any chance reflowing the board will fix it, or is it the chip itself? guess I could change the chip, unless it is a BGA.
It is just the chip,
there are two threads in the general forum I think that deals with damaged internal sd and how to use external only.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1877585

Apparently it is glued on!
No talk about replacement so far. It is a Sandisk chip.
It will be great if you know how to get the replacement, I am sure many here are now running without one after removing it.

Well, at least on mine, the Overcome seems to have fixed the issue there, in addition to running much that so far. So, is this the latest? You have really gotten behind Overcome, but what about Cyanogen or others? Seems Overcome is based on Gingerbread, or is it ICS? Just need to get Straight Talk going and see if I can dial.
Is there a donation fund for Overcome?
It is GB based.
teamovercome website is down for so long, I wonder if they are still around as a group.
You can easily move on to ICS and JB of CM/AOKP
Just download the ROM and the correct gapps for it
and put in SD card
and boot to CWM recovery and flash it.
Watch the message on the screen.
Too many people saying it is bootlooping while actually each flash produce a different message as it progress with the process.

[Q] How can I tell what firmware my chromecast has?

I have just received a chromecast in its box. How can I tell what firmware is on the device? If it is still original firmware I'd like to root it. I didn't see this question posted elsewhere.
You must not allow the chromecast to connect to a wifi ssid / network which has Internet.
In my case, I had an old asus (dd-wrt) router laying around. I powered it up with nothing plugged into it. No rj45 cat 5/6 cables connected. Switched my phone wifi to this wireless ssid network. Ran the chromecast app, it found the chromecast, set up the chromecast to use this no Internet network by selecting it & typing in the router's password. After setting up the chromecast, the app shows the firmware version as being 12072.
If you allow the chromecast to connect to a wifi network which has Internet, then it will quickly auto update to a firmware version which can not currently be rooted
View attachment 2246393
It's tucked away a little in the chromecast app, but this should help some.

Thank you all my build is 12072 which means I can root it. I believe I saw a thread on here somewhere which gave more detailed instructions on how to root the device. Where is the correct file to flash to root the device without having to worry about pesky updates?

I suggest you read the beginning few pages of the thread before flashing though.
Dying to know my fw version
Hello,
I've thoroughly read the instructions on how to root my Chromecast. Right after buying it, I set it up and I'm pretty much sure it got the official updates... so I ran to Best Buy to exchange it for a new one.
From thread comments, I know I have a shot at it having a vulnerable bootloader, now my problem is that OTG cables don't seem to exist where I live and I might have to go to Best Buy again to get one (long trip for a cable). Before I do that, I want to be certain that it'll work, but I cannot find where to see the build number. I somehow cannot get to the screen from the pictures.
I'm trying to set it up with a router that has no internet. Since this was a recommended method to check the build number, I thought it was possible, but so far I'm stuck with a message saying that ChromecastXXX connected to yournetwork, but cant access the internet..
At first I thought they had removed that from the Chromecast app, but I have installed the two older apks with the same results.
Could anyone tell me which step I'm missing?
I thought maybe I had this issue, but it's old and I was able to set up the previous Chromecast flawlessly.
keep on trying to make it connect even though there is no internet eventually it will give up and give you the number, thats who i got mine, it will say Chromecast XXX connected to network but cant access internet, and fail but then if you keep going it will eventually show you the build number.

ugh I did but it just times out and comes back to the same message. Perhaps it is a sign of a new firmware.
it will work dude eventually it will say that it went through even though clearly you havent got internet, and it will show the version number on the app , i did it through my pc not through the phone.

Thanks!. Got it working now. Somehow it never worked at home but I tried it at work where internet is filtered through mac addresses and that did the trick. Unfortunately it has an updated bootloader.
Not sure how much this will help, but I just went to Best Buy to return the 2nd Chromecast I had bought, since it came with a firmware newer than 12072. When I had purchased my first one, I hadn't done any research on rooting a Chromecast yet, and unfortunately allowed it to receive Google's OTA update. Before returning it, I took a picture of the serial number, pictured below. Tonight I decided to just get a refund at first, but then decided to take one third and final stab at getting one with a vulnerable bootloader. Thankfully, I kept the picture of the first one's serial number, and used it to compare against all of the Chromecasts that Best Buy had in stock. I only found one that began with "390...", since my originally purchased one began with "3901...". I live about an hour away from the closest Best Buy, so I decided to ask someone in Geek Squad if I could test it out to make sure it had the old firmware on it. He checked with someone else and was given the go ahead. We didn't plug it into the HDMI port, but he allowed me to plug it in to the USB port on a TV. Using the powered OTG micro USB cable I got in the mail today and a FlashCast drive I had created, I held the Chromecast button down and plugged the micro USB cable into the Chromecast. I waited to see if it the red light would go away after about 9 seconds, and VOILA, it did. I'll soon officially test it out on my TV so that I can see if the FlashCast logo comes up on the screen, and I will report back.
EDIT: Sorry for the delay in reporting back. Looks like the 3rd time was a charm, and the Chromecast I purchased last finally worked. So it looks like it's safe to at least assume that Chromecasts with serial numbers that begin with at least "390", with a range between "3901..." and "3907..." may have vulnerable bootloaders. Not to say this is the end all be all if figuring this out, but the guesswork might be if some use for now, until all the old stock gets sold completely.

Damn. I bought my chrome cast the other day and allowed it to update without knowing any of these forums existed

I picked up 2 chromecast's over the weekend from Best Buy (Mall of America). The first one had a 3Axxxxxxxx SN and was at 12940. The second one was a 39xxxxxx and was at 12072.
Versions with 12072 are still out there. Look for CC's with SN starting with 39 or 37.

I can verify that 3904 "should" have the original firmware. Spent an hour looking for one, and another 45 minutes making sure that the Wifi, and my phone had no internet connection to them, and then trying to get it to connect fully, so I could see the firmware version. As soon as I switched from using the Chromecast app on my OG RAZR, to using it on my Nexus 7(2), it connected right away .It was the only one they had in the Best Buy near me, that was even close as far as serial numbers go. Time to get my brick..uhh. I mean, unlock on
I can verify that 3As all have newer firmware, thus can't be rooted. I tried two from my local Best Buy
Greetings:
I'm trying to connect without updating since I just got my CC but to no avail since yesterday!!
I'm doing the "no internet router" option but don't even see the "home screen" when I connect
the CC to my TV set!! All I see is few colored "dots"!!
Am I doing something wrong? or do I have a faulty CC?
Any input is much appreciated.
P.S= My phone is a Nexus 4
My CC's SN starts with 3805xxxxxxxxxxx

Little dots means you are in recovery mode.
Trying installing FlashCast and Custom ROM.
If you know the version is OK before you even connect it to a router and set it up you can setup the root!

I certainly didn't do anything to be on "Recovery" partition"!!
I'm not sure what my build/firmware is but I guess I can always
just try to go for "root" and see if it'll happen, right? I mean there
is no harm in that!! I'll get my OTG by Monday so I can try it.
