nexus s nightly builds - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

will the nexus s nightly builds work from the cyanogenmod forums work with the captivate if we use the xcal kernel, or has anyone tried this.

yes they "should" work, remember the NS and SGS have deferent gps hardware among other hardware etc.

No, they won't work. Nexus S has very different hardware other than the screen, and processor. Plus the reoriented kernel is for froyo, we need a gingerbread kernel. CM7 for SGS(as in all Galaxy S phones) is being worked on.

They shouldn't work until we get a reliable 2.3 kernel made for Captivate.

Good man ;-)
Apparently the cyanogen guys are working on porting this to the SGS before they continue with work on cyanogen itself, and then will upgrade to v7 cyanogen using the new AOSP base.

Nice! Hope we can get some roms soon!
OMG OMG!
My Captivate can't wait for the proper GB port!!
Funny how we'll prolly get gingerbread before froyo.
Samsumg + AT&T = what a beautiful combination of slowass and moronic with an extra serving of we-don't-give-a-f**k-about-our-existing-customers.
can i install it on my sgs?

Lol.
Thanks for this, I can use the images from this dump to improve my theme!
I'm hoping that since its almost identical to the Samsung Galaxy S series phones that it shouldnt be too hard to cook up a ROM for the SGS series phones.
Also, I hope the GPS works better than the SGS phones, maybe somebody can look at the source code and figure out a way to fix the GPS on the SGS phones once and for all!
Keeping my fingers crossed!
GPS
Given the hardware similarities between the Nexus S and other SGS models, I'm curious as to the GPS performance of the NS and if the devs will identify software based improvements that we can apply to our SGS phones specifically the Captivate.

Yea, in all honesty, I'd rather Samsung stop working on Froyo and just give us Gingerbread on the Galaxy S phones. Why even bother putting out Froyo now?
And you know they wont update the Galaxy S phones to Gingerbread.
Here your requested link.
A link that appears to be an more comprehensive dump (with modem, recovery, userdata, bootloader, etc.) is here. But how to get at the contents?

I think I just wet myself, figuratively. Between Team Douche, Supercurio, Eugene, Master, Team Whiskey, etc. etc. etc. etc. we WILL have a damn GB either built from AOSP or ported and I can see this being done fast.

Need for Kernels and Modems?

If I have read correctly Flashing a new ROM doesn't make changes to Kernel or the Modem. First is this correct? Second if this correct is there a need to Flash different Kernel or Modem? Third if you do need to flash a separate Kernel or Modem is this done though ROM Manager after you have new ROM going?
Thanks
Almost all roms if not everyone available for the captivate will change your modem and kernel. Most of the roms available are based off of i900 froyo, so you need a compatible modem and kernel.
You can change your modern and or kernel using clockwork recovery which rom manager installs. So if you were on a rom that used kernel a, but you wanted kernel b you can change just the kernel and keep the rom

I was aware that kernels are flashed as part of the ROM, but modems are too? Does that mean I don't need to worry about compatibility, I can just flash ROMs and be good to go?
With HTC devices the modem (we call it radio) is stored on a different partition from the ROM so kernel, spl/bootloader and radio have to match when installing a new ROM.

Yeah, modems are included with the roms. I am guessing that true captivate roms (Cognition) would not have to include a modem if they chose not to (as long as everybody does the suggested 'flash back to stock'), but the i9000 based roms pretty much have to include a modem.

Nope, cognition would take care of it. I'm not sure what modem Cognition is using, but I am 100% sure it includes one. There are to many different opinions about modems for a developer not to favor one over another and include it in their rom.
Even if Cognition for some reason did not include a modem, your JH7 modem would be fine with the cognition rom/kernel.

[APP] Netflix

Here is the .APK for Netflix since the Market doesn't allow us to download it directly to our phones. Requires Gingerbread on your Captivate.
I have tested it out and it works on Continuum 5.4.1 (Gingerbread 2.3.3.) running the i9000 reOriented Kernel.

You can check InterRaven's or Tiamat's kernel if they support CM7.1. If they do, you can flash it to replace CM's kernel.
However, I personally think the best solution is to wait for stable version of CM 7.1.

I've got very good results using an Intersect Reaven Kernel with CM 7.0. You could give it a go, and if it is not what you are expecting, just go back... so make a NandDroid backup in case you need it.
Good Luck!!
Moved to proper forum.
You need to know one thing first, GRJ22 is not the version of the kernel. It is actually the build number of the Android System.
I personally would recommend IR kernel, and set it to run using Smartass. Saves battery, while not comprising your user experience.

[Q][I9001][ICS] What is the best ICS rom??

Hi
I know there is no official ICS ROM but i know that people have ported it off other devises so it works on the s+,
I was wondering...
A) is it worth it e.g. are they stable and fast
And B) which is the best, again most stable and fast.
Thanks
As far as I know there are only two stable ics roms - arco's cyanogenmod 9 port and miui v4 which i havent tried, but its based on cm9, so they should have the same bugs. I'm currently using cm9, and its ok for everyday use.
Here are the links:

but i was on a s3, and i was wondering is there a port of that because that is slick and has s-talk!!

P.S. by the looks of it cmod looks the best but was is up with the camera??
Someone must know of an ICS i9000 ROM that supports wifi tethering?!
Update
I have tried a lot of Custom ROMS. I found CM9 Acro the best. Now even Camera is working fine (Front, Back and Video recording @ lower resolution).
MUIU v4 is good, similar to IOS. Lot of bugs. (best part they are reducing everyday).
Paranoid Andriod Ecsatcy is a Tablet like Rom. Can try for a completely different feel.
RemICS is also good with Apex launcher. Need some small fixes though.
Ehndroix is again a good one. Lot of fixes. Can also try it.
Now a days there is lot of work going on so i am happy to see even work progressing on Jelly Bean as well.
hope this helps. Cheers.
I would say the cm9 by arco is the best i've tested.

The best ICS Rom?
In my opinion cyanogenmod 9 is the best ICS Rom and there is a offical "stable" version! I tried the nightly builts for 3 months and had no problems.
Now I'm on cm10 and im missing the stability of cm9.
