So I just rooted my G1 and installed Eclair 2.1.
For some reason I can't download anything from the market? Everything just sits at the 'installing' section of the app market and never really starts.
I would just install everything off the SD card but the ROM didnt even come w/ a file manager
Would I be better off installing a different rom or am I missing something? I am not recieving text messages either, but I was told that is because the G1 isnt compatible/working w/ the default message system and I would need to use a 3rd party app (Handcent, ChompSMS, etc)
Any help is appreciated
I have a retarded issue with it on my 1.5 Dream. Try signing into Google Talk. Not much of a fix... but if it works...

First, we need to know which rom you're using. Eclair is the version name of 2.1, not the rom. At that point, we might be able to help you. Also, roms generally dont come with file managers, you have to use your own. An alternate way to install your apps would be to install them through ADB.

Whomever told you that the G1 doesnt work with the default messaging app on 2.1 was lying. I can think of three roms off the top of my head that run it just fine. Hell, i've got it working on my G1 as I type this.
So once you get us some more information, perhaps we could help you out.
like the other guy said, i have heard that signing into google talk fixes the market download bug, also try rebooting, if i have this problem a reboot and about 5 minute wait will fix it.
Hello, guys. This is my first post after lurking for a while, adding roms and getting all of the good stuff for my captivate. But i bumped across the new market. I didn't follow instructions completely and deleted the market. So how should I fix this? I don't want to reflash my phone, because this would take 6 days and I am going on vacation in a few days, and I don't think I will survive without my beloved phone.
Any help on how to download the market app would be much appreciated. I have the android market app v2.12 but it will not let me install through my computer...
Still have the *.apk for the new market? If not you can go to the Themes Forum and do a search there - someone had the *.apk file for the new market app. You can download it - put it on your SDCard and then run it through your file manager - should install and your back in business.
Will need to use the SEARCH feature to find it though as I don't have the link.
Allright, thanks. I hope this works because normally I could not install apps directly to my phone because of at&t but i will try this.
btw.. are you on a stock ROM (2.1) or have you flashed to a custom ROM? Also if your phone isn't rooted this method won't allow you to install the app.
Sorry forgot to mention it.
And uh.. it never takes me 6 days to flash - usually takes me about 15-20 minutes to flash back to stock, install the new ROM, and restore my applications/app data.
It WAS on android 2.2 but I'm not sure if it is anymore because i tried restoring it to factory settings. And I'm talking about sending it to samsung to reflash it, I don't know how to do it myself :/
Oh, and yes. It is rooted.
and the app from there is kind of messed up... Very glitchy (crashes a lot and lags like crazy) and doesn't show every app in searches, like z4root which is how i easily rooted my phone the first time.
So i really just want the old market back but it will just not let me.
Go into Menu -> Settings -> About Phone and look to where it says "Firmware Version". If it says 2.2 and your phone has been rooted it should work fine.
Otherwise... you would at least need to Root it if on 2.2.
And if your not on 2.2? I'm not sure if this will work as I know it was pulled from a 2.2 updated phone.
Ok.. Plan B
You should be able to find the old Market app inside the *.zip file of any ROM you have downloaded. Just make sure they are 2.2 Froyo ROMs
Open up the *.zip file and go into system/app and look for (I'm 99% sure) "MarketUpdater.apk"
Copy that file to your SDCard and install using your file manager - should overwrite everything and hopefully your good.
Also.. you could go to your Menu --> Settings --> Applications and probably uninstall the current Market app you have downloaded first - delete any cache/data under there first before uninstalling.
Hopefully that will throw back on the original market app and your all set.
The only problem with that is... It was this one click downloader thing... Odin3. So I don't know... It also won't let me reupdate it for some reason....
Hrm.. This is from the OTA JH7 zip I have lying around. Give this a try and see if it works.
If not you will need to re-flash back to stock.
Could you supply me with a good rom thats easy to download and has the market and ****, like android 2.2, because the odin crap doesn't work for me.
Hrm.. I'd say go here if you wish to install a custom ROM. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=819105
Then a few options you have is Cognition, Auxura, or Assonance.
I've ran all of them and they are all great ROM's. I currently am running Assonance with the Gingerbread theme and it runs great.
Just make sure to do the reading first then download the ROM and you should be on your way.... just remember failure to follow the directions if on you and your warranty is already toast
Its already too late for my warrenty..... But I'll go ahead and try these. Thanks.
Actually. Something that would REALLY help would be helping me get into download mode. Every time i plug my phone into the computer in download mode it says usb device not recognized. How do i fix this? I've tried about every samsung drivers... None of them work... If i could get it into download mode i could get it working easily
My girlfriend has the G1 with stock 1.6 and I believe the makers of Words With Friends (Zynga) removed the app from 1.6 compatibility - it now requires 2.1 and above. She therefore can no longer download it from the Market.
This is a free app so there is no copyright or piracy issue here. I did find an APK via Google, but it has strange bugs (not the usual bugs with this app) such as she ends up in a game where it is me vs. me, but not her. Have tried all manner of uninstalls, reinstalls, and new WWF accounts. Must be because it is not designed for 1.6 any more.
Does anyone have access to the last well-behaved APK for Android 1.6? It used to work perfectly fine for her.
Hmm, why not just upgrade her G1 to the current version of ROM? Then she won't have that problem. Just curious.
Thanks. Unless I'm mistaken, 1.6 was the last official release for the G1 from Google, no?
I did upgrade another G1 to the Cyanogen version of Froyo, but it always ran slow, got worse, and the user ended up getting rid of it due to this, so I am cautious.
In short, is there a simple ROM that will bring her up to 2.1 on the G1, without slowing the phone down any more than it currently does?
Preferably a ROM I can just download and install via the update.zip method, without all the rooting and hacking. Thanks!
Yes, 1.6 is the official release by google. If you are expecting them to release the next one that will include 2.x, you might not even see it.
Even with 1.6 it's still slow (IMO). And you can't load any other apps on because most of the apps now a day required 2.x and above to work.
Since you asked, I recommend SuperAosp, and it's currently has 2.3 on it. I have been using it since March and loving it. Default load already is fast. With radio 2708/SPL 13d and the 15MB-boot from the DEV. You can also tweak it more for better performance, etc...
As far as not rooting, to my knowledge that's probably impossible. You will required to root in order to load any ROM.
Thanks! Is there any simple step-by-step guide to install it, using a Mac? I can mount the SD card on the Mac so simple file operations are fine.
I'm not sure where to get the appropriate Radio zip for example.
Thanks!
I actually took the plunge and installed the recommended SuperAosp from stock 1.6, and Words with Friends wont let me log in. I tried WWF 3.34 and 3.20 and both of them let you put email in and then it asks for new user name. You put it in and it goes back to the email. I've tried multiple emails and user names & it just goes right back. So if anyone is using a rom that works with WWF would love to know.
I ended up installing ezterry's Froyo and it works great! Make sure you wipe all data and caches first.

Oops sorry, I don't know how I missed this. It should work. I am using it. It's because your user name is taken. I ran into that problem before. I am currently using it with SuperAosp 6.4.2.
My problem is now in some of the game. the letter that was played will not show up from my opponent. It will not display correctly.
so i have this question. I have a Galaxy Tab bought in the philippines. when i bought the tab it was already able to take in any carrier here in our country, i dont know if it was correct to say that it was already jail broken. (able to handle any carrier's sim) Im still new to the android world and tried upgrading my tab already.
as of today, I am now using the MODACO rom for the galaxy tab. only issue though the 3g is not working anymore after upgrading (or maybe downgrading) from the stock rom. before i upgraded my tab, The gps is working, 3g working, gallery working, camera working, practically everything is working smoothly without noticeable lags. then now, after upgrading to modaco, the gallery is not working, gps still working, 3g not working, camera working, now experiencing some lags when multiple applications are running like, music + browser and causes me to force close. At start up, i noticed a pixelated flash resembling the recovery menu but it was only like a 1/2 a second flash and would start normally but sorry im a perfectionist, I don't like little things bothering me but if all else fail, I just stick to what I have and bare with it.
browsing the forums i saw that CM7 (cyanogen mod 7, correct me if im wrong) is better than modaco but with camera feature being down, I wouldn't like my camera to be disabled especially when my cousins like to take ALOT of pictures of themselves and other people coz they're vain little buggers. so, which ROM/OS/MOD is the best of the best out there.
I'm thinking of returning my Gtab to the store where i bought it and claim my act of god insurance just to replace my gtab and stay using official everything just for the sake of undoing my "mistake" of upgrading to a Custom Rom even though im still very very veeryy noob at the android world.

anybody ? any answers ?
I'm guessing you've done some research... Forum rule #1: Search before posting. Also, you are missing one important question, rooting. Unless you already know this. Anyhow..

What is/How do youFlashing? - Flashing is basically replacing a phone's Kernel/ROM/OS. (see above links)
What is a ROM? - Read only Memory: operating system (OS) and all the drivers and software that comes with the phone.
What is a MODEM? How to know your MODEM version?

*#*#1234#*#* PDA and Phone
*#*#1111#*#* FTA SW Version
*#*#2222#*#* FTA HW Version
*#*#44336#*#* PDA, Phone, CSC, Build Time, Changelist number
What is a NANDROID BACKUP? - used to backup ROM
Is it different from a Titanium Backup /w root? - used to backup system and user-installed apps.
Rooting - gives you "administrative privelege" on your tab. It gives you the ability to open all folders, hidden and system, delete any file, render your tab useless , as well as install many apps that really rock!
What is the most updated custom rom as of today? Depends. The purpose of ROM customization is to have a phone that works the way you want it to, and not the way the vendors (e.g. samsung) do.
Your opinion, What custom rom are you using and think that its best for you.
Overcome (see above). Also, gingerbread will be out shortly, which means, if you want to try the latest official GB on your tab, you have to re-flash the stock (orig) rom.
What custom rom is best used just for occasional use? stock! Overcome! This really depends on your personal preference.
What custom rom is best used for heavy using? i.e. Texting, Web Browsing, MP3, Video recording, Camera, Gaming, Office Editing(word, excel, ppts.)?
Same as above.
Thanks to those who would answer my noob questions.
It took me a good 10 minutes to answer these.. Please click the thanks button as many times as you can. After all, you had a LOT of questions.. See my other posts and thank them too!
well, i just wanted a quick answer or just a database or a list of what i can search about lol, searching through heavy content could be a hassle when you see lots of results but not the ones you wanted. so yea. hehehe.. i pressed the thanks button. thanks for answering my questions XD
btw, if you back up before editing your tab on kies and try to restore it from kies also, will it revert back to your original ROM when you do it. just want to know, also, will it remove the root after doing so ?
also, you didn't answer the NANDROID BACKUP and TITANIUM BACKUP correctly, I mean please elaborate more on this.
how are they different from each other. XD sorry for being so naggy about this, lol. needed some intelligent answers from people sculpted to my needs. lol!
btw, if you back up before editing your tab on kies and try to restore it from kies also, will it revert back to your original ROM when you do it.
Kies will only back up content such as contacts, images, and videos.. and of course can only restore the same. There is no way of using kies to backup or modify roms. To backup roms, you use nandroid. Search tha market for ROM manager for that. Kies cannot backup applications as well. That's where you use Titanium. One more thing Titanium does is removing vendor installed apps that you don't use (bloatware).
just want to know, also, will it remove the root after doing so ?
Rooting will not affect backup in kies. similarly, restoring contacts, pics and videos will not remove root. HOWEVER, it is reported that some rooted device will not upgrade its firmware in kies. This is a different thing from kies backup.
Again:
Kies is for contacts and pics/vids back up. It is also for official phone updates.
Nandroid backup is for ROMs.
Titanium backup is for system and user applications.
XD sorry for being so naggy about this, lol. needed some intelligent answers from people sculpted to my needs. lol!
Don't be sorry, I don't know anyone who wasn't a noob at one time, including myself. Thanks button is always appreciated!
Clockworkmod
Read this one pre.. but make sure your tab is rooted. Use Superoneclick. I gave you the link to this in the first reply.
This is CWM for flashing ROMS and doing Nandroid back ups. This is one of the easiest guides out there.

Hit thanks if I helped!
Wow. Thanks dude. Now i have a one stop referrence easily found via bookmarking. Hahaha. Now, i just have to find a micro sd card large enough for backung up via nandroid. Just found out today that nandroid is actually just clockworkmod and choosing the backup from the backup and restore menu. Thought that it was a completely different app. Hehehe
So i installed the doomed froyo rom on my thrill 4g and am loving it (had the "almost cyanogen" GB rom before this but couldn't live with the bugs). My only gripe is i cannot for the life of me figure out how to get google talk installed on it. I've tried everything from downloading it on the fone and clicking it to install (says install failed) to forcing it into the system/apps folder via terminal on my mac and cmd prompt on my pc to double check myself.
Nothing has worked thus far. I've tried a "custom" gtalk apk, the newest version (1.3), and the previous version all to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm not a fan of any of the 3rd party apps that handle gtalk, so that's kind of out of the question. I really want the official gtalk app cause i fell in love with it while using the cyanogen mod GB rom
Use the one included in the rom it is based off of... im guessing 10e stock
Sent from my LG-P925 using XDA App
the doomed froyo rom doesn't come with gtalk, its supposed to be a "light" rom ...it looks like it was just updated to 2.0 with a new kernel, I'll try that out and see if theres a gtalk app included.
You want gtalk I can see about making that work out for you. What you could try is take the official gtalk app and put that into the doomed froyo slim zip file. Just open it up, and put the gtalk app in the system/app and flash the rom file. That should do the trick.
That'd be great...i actually tried that method already, but it seems it doesn't work...its as if the ROM is ignoring it cause it doesn't show up in my installed apps list, but is def. in the apps folder.
keep up the good work tho, love ur ROM
Have you tried opening the .apk or .zip of the gtalk app in cwm or in Rom manager? It worked for me installing it on cyanogenmod thrill.
