hey,
I have a nexus one 2.2.1 CM6.1.1.
I want to know of any FREE gps apps that i can download or get for my phone. I want to be able to download the map (wanted:Canada) so i dont need a data plan.
Maybe Map Droyd is what you're looking for?
Check mapdroyd.com
Never mind, this has no navigation function..

Yeah I need a navigation app that I could download the map

Check Locus out
I think the latest Maps 5.0 provides offline navigation function, but I never tried it..
I use Maverick for offline maps caching, Maverick has both free and paid versions, Locus looks pretty nice too but Maverick requires less permissions to run.
The built in Google Maps already does offline navigation.

But it's crappy as hell.
It will reliably "offline cache" a currently calculated route ... but it's hope and pray otherwise, whether something was locally cached.
And forget about traveling somewhere and "pre-caching" the location (e.g. so that you don't incur roaming charges)
But I need a good one like the GPS app on an HTC Sense like d desire hd

Try Maverick.
It's meant for off road, but still works on road...

You want a free app that's like a paid app?
Pay and download whatever you want.
If you want free - use either Google navigation, or Waze (if it supports Canada).

You have to download the maps initially, but once downloaded you don't need to connect again. I use it when I'm out in the mountains, with no connection...

So you can now download multiple map areas when your at home on WiFi before you go out and they stay there so you dont need data to use maps.
Just do the following:
1. Make sure you have the latest version 5.7
2. When in Google Maps, press menu
3. Then choose: more > labs > and select "Download Map Area"
4. Go back to the map and center where you want to download.
5. Hold down your finger in the center of the map untill the address pops up.
6. Press the address bubble and the standard menu will popup only now you can select "Download Map Area" which will download 10sq Miles of map around that address, you can keep doing it until you have the whole of NZ if you want, its awesum!
Try it out, works great.
Orginal post from Google

I have no idea where that is but no you don't you just need to download the map and then turn gps on... All you need is gps.

Thanks but it will take me a day to download the whole of UK. Hopefully Brut will crack it and make it downlaod at least 100sq miles at a time then it will be easier.
I don't know why google don't make Maps Loader to allow us to get the maps for countries we want and then use only GPS to use maps like in Nokia Maps it will be so good to have all country map in offline mode
I agree so much easier

I still don't get how it works to be honest

It will download a 10mile radius of map data and it enables you to travel offline if needed ( in case of a kink in data connection ).
I constantly travel, so what I did was download 10+ 10mile radius so I would have no issue when travelling through deadzones ( which is EVERYWHERE.....thanks AT&T )

No, it's not. It won't help you if you need to reroute to another destination you didn't pre-download. I've been using CoPilot since 2009 while waiting for Google to catch up... no problems yet. I guess free isn't always better.
The only thing i like is that google picks up gps almost instantly...wheres as sygic 3 takes ages
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
thx thats gr8
This is good news but still way behind what Nokia offers. Hope they will catch up soon...
this is awesome thanks
Any good app to recommend compatible with Note screen resolution?

I'm using ALK Copilot for road/city
Maverick Pro for offroad / walking / hikking
They both use offline maps stored on the internal SD card

hehe well, i'm frm Symbian background, where I could get any paid app for free easily. This is my first android device, so will kind of take time to get used to it. And 23 euro is costly for me here in India
Sygic is pretty good. Also navfree works and its ok.
+1 for CoPilot for navigation. For hiking, Prus Maps is nice, and free.

I'm using GPS Grid Reference from the Market. I've downloaded all the Ordinance Survey tiles at all resolutions for SE England on my PC and pre-cached them on the SD card - i.e. the phone doesn't have to get them off-air any more. There are instructions how to do this on the app dev's website.
Does anyone know what I can turn off on maps location settings so that Google Now will still tell me where I am and bring up the same cards (i.e. The weather in the address I'm in, how long it will take to get back home, places to check in, etc.)?
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
I am guessing you can use Greenify and hibernate Maps so that it will only work on command.
Greenify all the way.

Pretty much, yes. Also if you turn off everything under Location, you will not have to worry about that much anymore. There are ways to completely freeze or remove Google Now from your device, just use Google and you'll find many articles regarding this.

I don't want to remove Google Now. That's the whole point. I wanna lessen the Maps wake locks but still get the same Google Now functionality.

Yeah, I misunderstood at the time and I wanted to edit my post but I forgot. As I mentioned, use Greenify and Google Now should work properly.
I need an app to backup my username and passwords. But i keep on flashing roms, so i need an app which stores the data and syncronises it Online.
Any suggestions plz.

In order to use Lastpass on your phone you must have a premium plan. It's only $12 a year and well worth it. That's what I use, but there are other options.
AR app recommendation?
I want/need an augmented reality app like wikitude where a user can add his own geotags simply.I would like to be able to geotag my favorite cafe's and maybe have the option to make those public.
I have tried wikitude and layar but the problem is I need to be some kind of developer for them in order to do so.

I searched xda and only found old info. http://forum.xda-developers.com/sitesearch.php?q=navigon or tom tom
Which one of the latest apps do you prefer and why? (or do you like something different)

Since there is an issue with GPS does it matter what you use?
My two cents are in for co-pilot. All maps are downloaded to your device. It's over 1gb data file for the entire US but you can navigate without data connection.
via stark naked magic
Google maps or waze
