hehe well, i'm frm Symbian background, where I could get any paid app for free easily. This is my first android device, so will kind of take time to get used to it. And 23 euro is costly for me here in India
Sygic is pretty good. Also navfree works and its ok.
+1 for CoPilot for navigation. For hiking, Prus Maps is nice, and free.

I'm using GPS Grid Reference from the Market. I've downloaded all the Ordinance Survey tiles at all resolutions for SE England on my PC and pre-cached them on the SD card - i.e. the phone doesn't have to get them off-air any more. There are instructions how to do this on the app dev's website.

Check Locus out
I think the latest Maps 5.0 provides offline navigation function, but I never tried it..
I use Maverick for offline maps caching, Maverick has both free and paid versions, Locus looks pretty nice too but Maverick requires less permissions to run.
The built in Google Maps already does offline navigation.

But it's crappy as hell.
It will reliably "offline cache" a currently calculated route ... but it's hope and pray otherwise, whether something was locally cached.
And forget about traveling somewhere and "pre-caching" the location (e.g. so that you don't incur roaming charges)
But I need a good one like the GPS app on an HTC Sense like d desire hd

Pay and download whatever you want.
If you want free - use either Google navigation, or Waze (if it supports Canada).

Is there any iGO version working on SGT in full screen mode?
No.
Use Copilot instead imo
Bringing this back up... I have used Copilot and dont like it. IGo maps are more up to date and I am specifically looking for egypt maps which are very limited on Copilot.

Sorry with ICS they decided there was no need for navigation, so no new phones will have it. You'll have to buy an iPhone if you want navigation and buy an app that's over $9000.
Try Sygic GPS, works here on CM9aplha11.

You could take a look at this thread here: [APP MOD] Google Maps 6.4.0 ownhere/Brut.all- NAVIGATION all roads.
There are 3 installation methods there.
From what I read, one method requires no root access, so you could give it a try.
Anyway, I used the third method using Root Explorer (replacing the apk & setting permissions).
Navigation works fine now in Indonesia.
also i confirm Sygic works, CM9 alpha
not perfect (app crashed one time over three usage) but works smoothly
Hi all,
Can anyone suggest some GPS app that's good for our Galaxy Note and better if without relying on data connection?
(possibly someone from Asia as i understood that Europe/US might have other GPS apps? )
First of all, I'm on STAXX PA 1.7 ICS with Anidroid Kernel v1.0.
I've tried a few, but not all that good:
1. Waze - free, quite nice, but require data connection, when get to somewhere without signal...
2. Sygic - free for 14 days, nice interface, doesn't require data connection, but can't find most location?!?! :silly:
3. Papago X5 - paid, quite accurate, doesn't require data connection, but doesn't support our Note resolution
4. Papago M9 - paid, quite accurate, doesn't require data connection, suppose to be Note-compatible, but not sure why, mine is not showing full screen. due to custom rom?
Any others that I can try?

Gps can locate your position without using data But how do you suggest it can load your map without data?? Have you been watching harry potter too much?
Navfree World (hxxps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.navfree.android.OSM.ALL&hl=en) works quite well. It does require a fairly hefty download (200-500mb) to get the maps for your country in the first place, but once the maps are downloaded, a data connection is no longer required.
The only "problem" is that it uses OpenStreetMaps, which while decent, doesn't have the detail that many of the commercial satnav offerings have.
Replace the xx in the URL above with tt, the forum won't let me post links yet.
Cheers,
cgkanchi

I'm using Sygic for the past two years now. Using it since the days of my good' old Wave 2 !! It is pretty much accurate in India. It shows even the smallest of locations. And gets a lock fast. :good: Uses Sygic Downloader to download maps(One time) so it's pretty much an offline navigation.

Above shown method will reduce(if you using navigation in area of downloaded map hardly it uses few KB) data consumption.
Google map still needs active data connection to run navigation. can't use as true offline navigation
Sygic is best from i tried, Sygic/Navigon/Ndrive 1-2 more from market.
Still google is the best if you have data connection.

Try Be-On-Road
Its in the app store. I tried a bunch of free and trial programs for offline nav on my Samsung N7000. This seemed to be the best - by far. For the entire USA, the cost for perpetual app and maps (update once per year) was $25. A decent price, I think. Slightly odd UI but easy to get used to via their 7-day trial. Not perfect. But I found a bug, reported it, got fast response, and a fix from the developer who will include it in the next release. Gotta like that. Wish it could navigate better using entries in the contacts list but it kinda works (if you have a data connection). Well worth checking out.

The trick is to enter your destination before you leave while you have Internet. Google navigation works fine with offline maps after that.
Within few minutes it will end with msg 'data connection lost'
