[Q] Unlock question - Motorola Droid and Milestone General

I just purchased a Milestone and it came unlocked I was wondering if I do a factory reset will I have to unlock it again? I'm not sure how it was unlocked as I purchased it used. Also its rooted/Oced from what I can tell as well , do I need to remove the root as well to factory reset it? It's running 2.1 update 1.

If you are talking about the subsidy/carrier lock, it sticks after resets (meaning you dont need to ever redo it again). I always either unlock my phones and buy them unlocked and have never seen a phone relock.
If you mean bootloaders or SPLs, you need to be careful which sbf you flash.
But with a factory reset, the worst you can do is lose data and apps.

It could simply be never locked. Carrier lock is not mandatory phone feature

No need to remove root for factory reset.

You can easily root it, so dont worry, just jump in..

[Q] I'm rooted and SIM unlocked, BUT!

I have lost my unlock code due to a HD failure. I am currently rooted and unlocked, and I run the leaked Froyo ROM.
What will happen in the future, should I want to flash, say, a Cyanogen ROM (*if* it becomes available)? Will I lock again? I understand my unlock codes were wiped when I flashed the new ROM.
Is there a way to insure I do not become locked again?
I have searched threads extensively, I do not think I have found a consensus on this? Anyone care to enlighten me?
I unlocked back on 2.1 (JF6), updated to JH7, flashed 2.2 (JI6), and have also flashed Cognition Betas 6, 7, 8, 8.1, and 9...and I'm still SIM unlocked. As far as I know, it's permanent no matter what ROM you choose to flash.
Your phone can relock if you dont remove your sim when you flash

That's what I did before I got my SIM locked, was playing around with JH7 a month or two back and somehow got it relocked.

Hmm...strange. I still have my code (saved on both my MicroSD and an external harddrive) but I might start removing it as a precautionary measure.
even i never removed my sim anytime while flashing or updating....mines still unlocked....i hope it doesnt get locked in the future, cant we permenantly unlock it. . . .

Keep it on Simplenote .
Thanks for all the info. I feel better now! And yes, I will remove my SIM before flashing

Will my unlocked Captivate work with Tmobile after I root and flash custom ROM?

So I just got my new Captivate and it's unlocked so I can use it with Tmobile. So my question is if I go ahead and root it and apply custom ROM, will it still work with with Tmobile?

Yes it will I've unlocked my phone once, and have never had to unlock it again. Even after flashing ROMs, Master clearing, and factory resets. Enjoy!

I may be wrong but I thought I read somewhere that if you flash a froyo rom it deletes the unlock code. I would read up some to confirm and make sure you save the unlock code

Does Unlocking bootloader also wipe your data?

Hey folks. Got a Dev edition here, which as I understand is easy to unlock. Question is must I lose my data when doing so? And if yes, how can I backup before unlocking? If I had root, I would run titanium backup, but given that I can't get root until I unlock, this seems like a chicken and egg problem....

Yes, doing the. Mfastboot oem unlock will factory reset the phone. You will lose apps and data. I am not familiar with a way (while not rooted) to back up everything and restore after unlocking such that everything is the same.
I may be wrong.....just going from memory of what I've read, but I think an app called helium can backup without root. Then you'd need to transfer the backup off the phone, cause everything is gone when you unlock. Pics too.
Hm. Can anyone confirm this happens for sure? On the Galaxy Nexus, people said the same thing but it turned out that if you just typed fastboot oem unlock without flashing any partitions that no data was actually erased. I just can't understand why unlocking would be linked to erasing.
Thanks!

Unlocking erases everything. On any device I've owned. The x for sure.
Why? Dunno. Lol
Unlocking the bootloader will reset the phone back to factory fresh condition as stated. When I unlocked my Moto X it was factory reset. Same for when I unlocked the bootloader in my Nexus 10, Droid Razr M, Incredible and Eris. I think this is the normal behavior.
There are ways to back up your data and apps even without an unlocked or rooted phone. There is a toolkit in this forum somewhere for the Moto X that will do that as well as a market app (Helium?). I used the toolkit here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/development/tool-moto-x-toolkit-v1-2-1-t2477132
But I did that while at 4.4, before the OTA update to 4.4.2.
Any tool to recover files from a recently formatted device by unlocking the bootloader? thanks.
No. "Format" means "Blotto Everything". That's exactly what happens.
IMO seems to be a commercial "feature" more than a technical limitation. The simply want to discourage you to unlock the bootlader. All along the process, there is a warning message telling you that unlocking the bootloader will make the phone less secure. A subliminal message from Xiaomi : Blessed be the freely included uninstallable without root - and by extention unlocking the bootloader... D'oh!- bloatware package ! Or go to hell with your data if you dare to spit on it!
If you are able to install twrp, does that mean that the phone is already unlocked? I've already deleted my stock android and I couldn't see any options there at all of unlocking the oem directly in the settings, but I was able to install twrp itself (2.6).

Going back from 5.1 to 5.0

Can you go back to 5.0 after flashing 5.1 Roms? Was just wondering because seen a lot of bricks ..Some bricks from licked bootloaders others from flashing..I just don't want to brick because I bought mine from someone and don't have insurance .Unless it could fall under factory warranty replacement....

You can upgraded / downgrade from any ROM. Its not a HTC
The locked boot loader issue is user error. If you lock the BL and the phone doesn't boot, you'll have to get Moto to fix it. And yes that would be covered by warranty

It depends what you're expecting in future. If you want OTA, you'll need everything to be 100% stock and the right version. If you don't care about that, minimum is system.img and boot.img.
i tried to downgrade my bootloader through fastboot from 5.1's bootloader to 5.0.1 and fastboot throws an error from moto saying it cant be downgraded.
have a question. is it ok to flash the factory 5.0.1 system and boot while on the 5.1 bootloader and radio? i have read a few threads of people bricking but it's unclear if it's possible to use an aosp rom that's 5.0.1 or 5.0.2 on 5.1 bootloader and radio.

I had been running Chroma 5.02 with the 5.1 bl and radio. I reverted the radio because of issues with TMo, but the bl seemed fine. FWIW, I made all my changes via fastboot.

Since it gets reset then do I need to recheck OEM unlock option at every boot or its fine to leave it as it and I can reboot anyway I want?

It really depends what you want to do. If your bootloader is remaining unlocked, it doesn't matter. If you are locking it again, to unlock it, you must set the option before booting to bootloader so if you want to minimise risk, then you will need to set it every boot. We do not know where this setting is stored yet. I really don't understand the need for this option to be honest.

Seriously this thing is giving me a headache, I am not going to toggle anything in bootloader now and it's a pain to check this option everytime before doing a reboot, it was good before 5.1, it used to stay as it is.

Just leave it unlocked. If you plan on manually updating I don't understand why you would lock it. just in case something goes wrong if it's unlocked you have options. If it's locked you have very, very few

The setting is due to Google's new anti theft options ( http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/0...evice-protection-feature-and-how-do-i-use-it/ ) . If you have OEM Unlock checked this protection can easily be bypassed with a flash.

I am not going to lock my bootloader. I like it Unlocked but my point of concern is that OEM unclock option get reset to uncheck at every boot. I want to know what will happen if I reboot my phone and OEM unclock option is unchecked(means bootloader is locked, this is what I think) while my bootloader is actually Unclocked.

But who really cares if a thief can "use" the phone when it is stolen? They can't use it as a phone because the IMEI will be blocked. If they unlock it, it will wipe your data too. I'd rather not have to set an option within android to allow me to unlock my bootloader and the problems here have proven this to be a detriment to people who flash.

I am confused about something if the device is already unlocked does it matter if that OEM is ticked? I reboot twice already and it reset it back to being unticked. So what I am saying is if i go from one rom to another and that isnt ticked will it cause issues even if the bootloader is already unlocked?

No if it is unchecked your bootloader is still unlocked, but you will not be able to unlock it again without booting into your device and checking it again.
Where people are getting bricks is they are downgrading their radio and bootloader, at which point their bootloader relocks, and they are stuck at bootloader as they can't access anything other than bootloader and that is locked.

No issues going from Rom to Rom with it unchecked. Issue lies in... No OS so you can't boot up and check oem unlock, stuck at a locked bootloader screen, so you can't flash a custom recover, can't restore because you can't access recovery.

I do use a usb otg stick and usually wipe the entire phone before each rom to make sure I start fresh. After I wipe everything in twrp i go to reboot back into recovery and it brings up the no os are u sure u want to do this. This wont cause issues even if unchecked correct?

No you won't have any issues doing that. If you want to be safe though you should check oem unlock before you start flashing and wiping. We all know flashing doesn't always go as expected and the last thing you want is to end up stuck. As long as oem unlocked is checked recovering from soft bricks is easy.

Rooting noob here...

I just want to root my HTC Desire 510 in order to use Xmod game assistant and just to delete bloatware. I tried using kingoroot, it said success, but it actually didn't even work. I found out that you need to unlock the bootloader. I don't really want to this, i have no interest in it. I was thinking of using Kingoroot's HTC bootloader unlock to unlock it, then root it using the kingoroot rooter, then re-lock the bootloader with the Kingoroot bootloader program. Is it risky? Please note my phone has no important data, it's new. And I do not want to install anything custom. Just get xmod and remove bloatware. That's all I need.
Would this all work? Please help.

No this won't work and the number one reason is because if you root the phone and then spend your time deleting all the bloatware you'll be wasting your time if you don't install a kernel with write protection removed because as soon as you reboot the phone will reinstall everything! So you need to unlock the bootloader and then install the custom recovery and then make a backup first before doing anything else and then install the kernel with write protection removed and then delete bloatware!
Ok, I decided I don't want to remove bloatware. I am just rooting so I can download Xmodgames and such apps that need a rooted device. No custom ROMS or anything. Would I be fine?

Yes. Although be warned rooting will restore the phone to stock after unlocking the bootloader.
Can you even use the phone if you make changes? What I mean is isn't the point behind a locked bootloader to keep changes from being made? So if you unlock -> make a change (rooting for example) -> then relock .... doesn't that equal bootloop when the bootloader notices you've changed something?
For my two cents... I'm probably more of a noob than you @uRager, and I got through the unlocking and rooting process with not too much trouble. I think the good old fashioned way will probably serve you the best. And there are several kernels that are just a modified version of the stock kernel (write protection removed) so a couple more minutes will get the bloat removed as well. Also don't be afraid to ask questions, from what Ive seen they usually get answered.
