so i just flashed cognition 3.04, and i love it. so much smoother and faster. i was tired of waiting for the officail 2.2 froyo release. the only thing that i dont understand is that it says that the unlock screen should be the stock glass pane swipe thing. but its not. its just the standard froyo unlock screen. not a big deal just wondering about it. so i guess thats my question.
More people requested stock lockscreen over the glass one. It's really upto DG to change whatever he wants in his rom. I guess he likes to satisfy all his followers
yeah i am not upset with the lockscreen. just wondering if i missed something. its a really nice rom. now i am wondering what else should i add to the phone. i want to keep this rom but maybe overclock it next.

I'm thinking of trying glitterballz lethal with an i9000 rom. Glitterballz' kernel has always worked well for me.

lol i did read everything in the change log. even researching the things i didnt understand, which was quite a few. ha. but your right. i mistook that for meaning the STOCK captivate lockscreen. and also the two large screenshots threw me off, since the picture posted by designgears of the rom layout clearly shows the lock screen being the glass style one. but if thats the only mistake i made then so be it. what overclocked kernal do you guys recommend with the cognition rom.

No worries man, just thought I would make sure you knew it was in the change log. I personally am not using a OC/UV kernel because every time I have it has killed my battery. I just left Serendipity for that reason. I have run both Hardcore and Glitterballs kernels and I just never had good luck like others have had.
yeah i probably will leave it alone for now. but i feel i want to do more. any suggestions for other stuff i can add/do to the phone now.

That is the beauty of these phones; I was running Serendipity and just yesterday alone I had to charge twice because it killed my battery. I was running extremely mild settings so I would try and help my battery and it still died. That is why I went away from it, but my phone has been that way with all OC/UV kernels. On the other hand with Cognition I flashed yesterday at 85% battery (yes everyone says flash from 100% and I don't care lol) and after 14 hours I am at 70% battery with normal use for me. If I were on Seredipity or any other OC/UV kernel my phone just sleeping would die. It sucks how much of a difference these phones have between each other.

If you dont cut out the rest of my sentence it says at the end "for me". So simply changing the rom immediately made my battery better because i had serious issues on serendipity. Please dont take a part of what i said and try to twist it around.

I only speak for myself and my stats. I was using that point based on what i have had happen. I have used my phone more today than the previous couple because the battery lasted. On serendipity which is a good rom overall i would lose atleast 35% during the day with airplane mode on. Working in a clinic att does not work in my area so i keep it on to help savebattery. Too bad my phone hates oc/uv kernels.
This is my captivate. There are many like it buy this one is mine.
well i havent charged the battery since i flashed it and its still at 42 percent. and i have been messing with it alot. so apparently my phone loves cognition. ha. but i was wondering if its possible to put the touchwiz app drawer back in. i liked it better since you can move the apps where you want.

I Just recieved my new captivate (sent the other one in for warranty issues) in the mail, and am wondering if it's worth it to upgrade this 100% stock captivate to JH7, or if I should wait for 2.2?
Another suggestion
Upgrade to the Cognition ROM...you get JH7 with a lot of other goodies... http://cognition.theidiotshideout.net/phpmyfaq/index.php?action=show&cat=1
The GPS issue appears to have been resolved with this ROM, and the whole phone seems quite a bit snappier.

That's awesome; I'm gone for a week-ish and THIS pops up?
Major thanks.
+1 for the Cognition ROM... I have had my device 2 days now and the first thing I did on night #1 was blow away all that ATT and Samsung [email protected] and load Cog.... this ROM rocks... super fast for me. No telling when 2.2 will be baked enough on our devices for me to use it as my daily driver.... weeks maybe....
Flashed Cognition 2.1; Works wonderfully, sans GPS... This phone is turning out to be a real debbie downer in that department.
My GPS has been somewhat OK.... for the 3 times I used it, it was pretty darn close. It drifted a little when driving highway speeds, but crap, close enough for me most times. I think my phone is a late build... I waited for a while to pick one up due to the glass shortage that occurred earlier... curious, can we tell when our units left the factory, and if so, I wonder if they are coming out with different GPS chips on them?
One last thought - did you do a batt pull once your new ROM was in place? Just shooting off ideas... I hope it starts working better for you... I am really liking this phone compared to my Bold 9000.

I've never gotten a lock with either of my Captivates; What do you mean by a battery pull? Just lug the battery out of the phone while it's running and put it back in? I'm curious as to how that would be beneficial to GPS. (I've done a reset, but that's about it)

Yes, exactly. Pull the battery out, wait for a minute, put it back in and reboot. In many cases, this has (for me) fixed weird little issues after ROM updates etc. I have no evidence that this would affect the GPS in your case, but I thought I'd mention any tips/methods that have helped me in the past.
Yeah a battery pull usually solves a lot of issues when upgrading roms...I've had t so that twice.

Depends, setiroN puts out a very nice kernel. I use his in my ROMs. On a side note, I would move this to the Q&A before the army shows up!
Edit: you need a custom ROM to gain access to the tethering function.

If you haven't done it yet, flash Perception or Cognition, they both have wifi and usb tethering on. I haven't played with the others, but if you do some reading you find out about the others.

Yeah, I saw more technical stuff over here so I posted. My bad. I think I want to stay away from ROMs. Idk though. I've heard they're cool, but always break something. I just came from iPhone and I was up to speed. Now I'm such a lost n00b! My goal WAS to overclock and enable tethering and stay with the stock ROM. Are there any ROMs that don't break ANYTHING? You can always go back to stock, but you never will once you play with some lagfixed kernels and custom roms. I thought this thing blew the iCrap out of the water stock, and its amazing now. Overclocking sounds cool, but unless you are a gamer and actually need the extra clock speed, i'm not sure its worth the effort. I have had ridiculous battery life just using 1GHz and Voodoo lagfix. I would def recommend you try P9.5 (perception) as I have no problems with anything and the best GPS ever.

No disrespect meant to the other ROM devs. I am a DG fanboy and found what I was comfortable with and haven't looked around at all, but I know there are a lot of people out there that like roms made by other devs, and I'm sure they are just as good.

Alright. Finally got back home and got it flashed. Seems fine. Battery life seems a little shorter. I only have about an hour with it. A few questions, what is Blinky? And what is BLN?
bln is back light notification. it can sometimes be turned off in recovery if the kernel has a modded recovery. basically if you get a text email or other alert the phone will put on the soft key back lights. i dont care for it because im never looking at my phone at it is never in a visable location for the lights to catch my attention. basically if i can see the lights im probably about to unlock my phone anyway in which case i can see the notification in the status bar.
blinky is an app that has something to do with bln but it didnt work when i tried to use it.
give the battery a couple days to calibrate. the batstats file can get all screwy making you think you have battery drain. if you charge the phone while it is off and then start the phone the two battery meters should be close to each other. if they are not then the batstats are likely off. you can clear them in clockworkmod recovery. over the coarse of a few days you may see the battery life appear to get longer.
i believe the accepted procedure for calibrating is charge to full. clear batstats. charge to full +1-2hrs. turn off phone and charge to full again +1hr, turn on phone and charge to full.
but i tend to just clear bat stats once and use the phone. im not gonna dis anyones method but i see no point in the calibration thing.

Please mod % Battery
Just when i setup KA6 . Thank you, gonna flash it now just for the sake of it.Will see in the morning how it behaves.
Wow!
All I have to say is whow, hold up your going to fast for me!
This is by far the fastest rom I have used on the Vibrant thus far. The response is just insane. Only had it 30 minutes or so so I can't say the battery life will be great.
The radio on this is insane, gps lock in like 10 seconds and within a minute on the tester was a 6m accuracy in a car doing well past the speed limit, I wasn't driving . The speed of the web browser is the fastest experience as well on the Vibrant.
I will say I tried going to Trigger twice but it wouldn't show the launcher at all, I couldn't get it fixed and in a moment of desperation tried this and I think it was fate.
Well done and many thanks!
PS: The Einherjar Dev Team is lucky to have you and if this is the product you can put out, man this dev team is the new hotness. I was already in love with Pepperkake and haven't found a rom till this one that I liked as much.

Hey, I've been using this rom since last night and so far everything is running smooth and stable.
I did not ask him what the deal was, to be honest a bad odin flash might be what did it. However I re odined and reflashed and it did the same thing. I was at work and it was coming up shift end time so I was just trying to get something working for the ride home, plus was waiting for a call from the wife.
My only request is an accurate battery mod with some wicked graphic like the circle that changes colors.
For now and the past 3 roms I've had I just used a widget out of the market so no big deal. Debating whether I want the wifi calling, before at my house I didn't get the best reception, call from wife once i got home was steller quality and no breakup so I think in all honesty the radio may have done the trick and may not require the wifi calling afterall. Plus I'm worried what it might do to this screeching performance.

You're absolutely right about the radio. I found the early versions of the Wifi calling app to be a resource hog, which is why I remove it from this build, and have always removed it from my personal builds. As far as the accurate batery mod, I'm sure that cooking up somewhere. I'm planning on taking some time this weekend to jump into framework modification and theming, so I can start bringing these things to the builds myself. Until then, we have to wait on our wonderful community here to provide us with the mods when new versions drop.

market will update itself, I can add a flashable zip to the op to add back in the Memo.apk. As far as swype, I don't use it personally, UltraKeyboard for me , but I can definitely look into it.
axura zip is missing system/apps for some reason..... can you upload a memo please? thanks!
and the swype is just a suggestion, most people use other keyboards too im guessing.
Someone PLEASE give me some good proper settings for the SetCPU. I have VEGAn TAB Gingerbread Edition 7.0. Kernal Version says: 2.6.32.36-cyanogenmod [email protected] #1.
I know someone on here is using this...so let me know how to set this up using my G Tablet.
I want faster performance at the same time...extending battery life a little. Either way..nothing to make it overheat tho.
Let me even know the specs i posted will work with SetCPU. Thanks.
Performance and battery life are opposites. You have to underclock to get more battery life.
Oh.. and it's a kernel not kernal.

Typo in my spelling. But theres a middle where you can set to get a little of each. Anyway...anyone??????????
Not gonna happen. If you do anything to make it faster it increases power consumption, period. The On Demand governor, default, does the best job of letting you go 100% when you want and drop to a low freq when you are idle.

Ok..are you using this? Would you know any good settings for this GTab? I dont wanna do anything and overheat it or put the wrong settings and stuff. You know. Any bad side effects?
Edit: Dumb question but...if i use this plugged in alot...in my room..then all the power it uses would be for the good right? can't kill the battery then.
Edit 2: One more question..if there was something you didnt like about it...does just uninstalling it put your phone right back to how it was? Or a little more tweaking you need to do before you uninstall?

As I recall, running VEGan 7.0 I used SetCPU no higher than 1.2 w/interactive. No noticeable drag or heat. Perhsoot builds great kernels but I seem to recall using Blades or Clemsyn but could be wrong. Unless you find a way to clock so far out of parameters (voltage/speed) I seriously doubt you can irreparably fry your GTab. Using the wrong power adapter would be more likely to nuke a tab. IMO.
Using plugged in logically it's a wash as you use what you charge. I'm no expert in electronics. Others may have more input here.
I have always re-flashed ROMs to reset. That way you know you cover the custom kernel. Some have had success flashing only the kernel. YMMV.
Always proceed after a good backup!

Thanks alot for the reply. See...i don't flash or anything like that. Haven't took the time to learn it..when i know i need to.
I was hoping no kind of reflashing was involved. So your saying uninstalling it may not put things back like it was?
Also curious on this one..that "Set to Boot" thing..if you DON'T check that...does that mean whenever you reboot...it goes back to normal? And you have to open SetCPU again and again to set it up?
And of course checking it would mean it stays that way i guess. Just heard a few weird stories that you can't uninstall it. But even if i do..wanted to seriously know if everything will go back like it was. Thanks again.

Not a problem. We were all noobies at one time!
Flashing sounds like trouble but if/when done right it's simple. Trust me, you will one day laugh at remembering how anxious you were about it.
Check your other post. Doing a nandroid backup thru CWM will make a FULL BACKUP of everything on your GTab as it is right now. It's way simple to do really and can save your ass if something goes wrong.
Set To Boot means just what you think. If you leave it unchecked your GTab will revert to stock speed. Set To Boot means when your GTab reboots it goes back to overclock speed you set.

Yea..had a feeling thats what the BOOT part meant. Just wanna be sure. And the ROM manager thing..im getting ALOT of negative things about it working NOT good with the GTab. Even my thread on here has a few people saying that. My gut keeps telling me when i try this...something will go wrong...then ill thing " Why did i have to try this..there was nothing wrong with my Tablet before this". You know. That lil voice.
Thats true about how we are were the same at one time. I hate when certain people think they never were. Funny.
Are there teps to nandroid backup without that ROM Manager? I want the easiest way possible.
Plus...how can i tell which Bootloader i am...you know..they say its either 1.1 or 1.2. I bought mine already flashed. Cant get ahold of the dude to ask him.

OK. How to tell what bootloader you have....here.
Install CWM Guide here.
CWM is the only way I know of to do a complete nandroid backup. Installing CWM just for that makes it indispensable.
ROM Manager on the GTab is iffy at best. Works well on other tablet but not so much on GTab. I used it for informational purposes only.
I know that "little voice". We all have heard it. But having a full backup helps quiet it. I would not suggest you get to tweaking until you have a nandroid backup via CWM. That dreaded "something" will go wrong. It happens to most all on here who want to learn. Nothing like a soft bricked tablet to motivate one!
Just a suggestion. Before you get in too deep. Spend a week or so just reading the forum. Learn to use the Search function (It will save your butt many many times). Keep your threads condensed. (Two SetCPU threads can be confusing) and keep reading...
Oh, and relax. Pretty much whatever one does to a tablet can be fixed. I said "pretty much"! lol

So, to check which branch you are on if you are on STOCK: Go to Settings -- About Tablet -- Tapu UI Version.<<< I dont see that Tapu UI anywhere in my About Tablet. Hmmm. But i am running VEGAn TAB. I DO see Build Number: GRI40.
When in read how to check the bootloader thing..he did say something like ' If i have a lock screen..i must be on 1.2. I DO have a lockscreen. So 1.1 doesnt have any lock screen when the Tablet starts up????
But just a weird question...wouldnt i already have CWM if i have VEGAn TAB on here already?? I thought yes. I DO wanna speed this baby up a little bit. Doesnt have to be SUPER fast. Just a little faster startup and faster when i click apps or menu stuff. I want a Motorola Xoom soon. Wanna sell and trade up stuff for it.
I also wouldnt mind VEGA n TAB 7.1...i think they said the Camera works in that version for Skype and other stuff..not sure. Im a paranoid person with certain things in life. I guess this is one of em. Weird...im good with computers. Programs and stuff a little bit.
Guess i should just DL SetCPU and run it..just dont click set on BOOT.
Edit: WOW..those steps in how to install CWM is point on. Thats what i like...the DUMMY style step by step. Every word. You know..until we learn how to do it. Some people would explain..then say a certain word and ill be lost. That one was good. Thanks alot for the kind words and help. I really appreciate it.
Edit 2: I can put the zoip to CWM onto the internal SD of the GTab right? Even if theres alot of stuff already in it???
Edit 3: In the CWM folder i downloaded...i see the update.zip...zipped..and a folder that says Recovery. Strange..in the steps to install CWM...it says everything but it doesnt say what to do with this folder...even tho i think it should be in there no????

Ok..are you using this? Would you know any good settings for this GTab? I dont wanna do anything and overheat it or put the wrong settings and stuff. You know. Any bad side effects?
Edit: Dumb question but...if i use this plugged in alot...in my room..then all the power it uses would be for the good right? can't kill the battery then.
Edit 2: One more question..if there was something you didnt like about it...does just uninstalling it put your phone right back to how it was? Or a little more tweaking you need to do before you uninstall?

No. I used it on a different tab that I wanted to underclock to get battery life. The Galaxy tab is fast enough that I dont desire to overclock, so cpuset is useless to me.

I need a little help. My I897 is running on MPD 2.0 ROM, w/ EyeCandy v 3.15 and Corn Kernel 7.06, and it is stuck bootlooping at the swirling optical illusion at start-up. I don't know why, all I was doing was playing a couple of games and it was really lagging, and freezing up and it has been a lot lately. I even posted about it yesterday or the day before? Whatever?
So tonight, it just froze while playing a game and it was totally unresponsive so I let it sit. After about 10 minutes, I noticed it was on the optical illusion and stuck with the illusion spinning away. I pulled the battery, restart the phone same thing. Goes through the first start up screens and gets to the swirl thing and goes no further.
I pulled the battery again and replaced it, went into recovery and hit the reboot device and started it up. Same thing.
Should I reflash the Rom? If I do, I have to do a full wipe and that will suck.
Has anyone had this problem on MPD 2.0?
Maybe someone has an answer.
Thanks, whoever tries to help me with this.

I'm not so sure what MPD is but Corn kernel is on GB. Therefor, there's no developping nor support being made for it, which could explain why you got no answer on your previous post.
Luckily, you can get in recovery. Make a backup, wipe cache/dalvik and try to boot up. If that doesn't work, back in recovery, wipe cache/dalvik, factory reset and reflash your ROM. Altough, I would suggest looking at the newer ROMs out there as we're up to JB 4.2.1 (you're on GB 2.3.5).
If you go ahead with the upgrade, make sure you follow the full instructions in the OP.
Thanks, I already reflshed and its running. I know that there are newer Roms I only flashed it because I hadn't yet flashed anything from the Collective and the eyecandy theme I wanted to check out also.
But after running great for a couple weeks, it started getting buggy. Now I'm gonna do something else. My SII is running darkside Evolution #5 4.03 by thederekjay w/venom kernel, and I wanted an older Rom in my Cap, for contrast.
I'm not sure what I'll do next. I just needed it running. It is my business line for my electrical contracting company. And it will start ringing in about a ½ hour.
Thanks, for your response and have a great day.

Wait, the collective? The Collective and The Family used to be one team.. Yet I dunno what you mean by MPD?
And if you're looking into something stable, I would highly suggest either AOKP or AoCP (4.1.2).
MPD is a KK4 based Rom put together by robm1911 of the Collective. The Multiple Personality Disorder ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27985912

Oh I see, was made while I was away. Thanks for the clarification 4-2ndtwin
What would you recommend for a stable build? I use my Cap as my business line. So it has to be reliable. Camera, GPS, texting, etc..., all have to function. But I also like to have the little extras. As you know I'm on the kk4 kernel, and I'm OK with flashing, not okay with having to run anything that needs me to use Linux or do any command lines that kinda thing. I still new to everything. Thanks

Sorry, but I forgot to mention that it running pretty normal now. I got rid of the eyecandy theme. It is the culprit from what I can tell. Without it the phone is better. Still a little laggy though.

There are also tweaks in recovery that u can choose from and even the ability to change the partitions to Ext4. Check the kk4 corn kernel's op for info on these things.
I use my cappy for work and pretty much have stock kk4, with Root, debloated, Ext4 on all partitions and the tweaks i have are sio Scheduler and smartassv2 Governor. Runs great !

I have it running on deadline and smartass v2 and it runs pretty damn well, I dont know too much about partinoning so I have stayed clear just in case I screw something up.
What about the kernel tweaks (ROM toolbox pro) the voltage controlsyscti tweaks? What is that for, signalling the different MHz -0mV? I'm an electrician and have been for 20 years but electronics is a new hobby and the phones my new medium. I would love to know more, so if you could tell me what I should read or??? That would help me learn more I would be stoked.
Thanks KK

OC = Overclock
UV = Undervolt
SoD = Sleep of Death
I don't suggest changing voltage on the cappy (UV). The processor isn't strong/fast enough, therefor it takes more time to process what you ask of it = more screen time = more battery drain. While screen off though, your battery will be better (can also cause black screen and SoD at unstable state). Screen on is the main battery drain for androids. So basically, reducing your voltage (UV) will lower your battery consumption, of course at a price = slower processing and despite you intention to reduce battery drain, it might increase it. The Captivate has proved to be quite unstable with OC/UV on GB and up.
Up'in your Mhz (OC) will make your phone faster but at the cost of faster battery drain and faster hardware usage. On top of that, both can make your phone unstable. Finding the right combination can take some time if you really wanna get into it. There are guides about it which you can find with a little search, altough, once again, I don't recommend it.
Thanks Bwolf, I really appreciate you taking the time to explain some of that. I have read some some of that stuff in other posts, over the past year or more that I've been on XDA, although it was Greek to me at the time. Now I knowwhat you guys are saying, I just don't know the hows or whys. In time.
I will follow your advice on the voltage and the OC and leave it alone.
There was a time a while back when I first started messing around and I changed something it might have been voltage, and my Cap went nuts. It was sucking down my battery right before my eyes, so fast and getting hot, I pulled the battery and I don't remember how I got it straightened out, but I did. Crazy! So, I know better, curiosity killed the cat (cap) lOL. Thanks Again

Hehe np. As for what happened before, pulling the battery most likely reseted your kernel settings (OC in this case) as it probably wasn't ''set on boot''. Probably saved you a lot of hastle too
