[Q] Soft root HTC Wildfire froyo - Wildfire Android Development

Hi
I recently upgraded to HTC wildfire official froyo 2.2.1 update.
My build number is 2.25.720.1
I know for sure that there is no root available yet for froyo. But can anyone help me in getting the soft root access, which would help run root only apps pls?
Thanks,
Goldbeard

Even that is not possible. Only shell root is possible as of now, but, that is totally different from system root, which is required for root apps to run.
If you needed root apps, why on earth did you upgrade when there are 1000 posts from different users shouting themselves hoarse not to upgrade to official 2.2?

China 2.2 is downgradeable to EU / WWE 2.1. (There is a thread somewhere in this forum) However, for new Outside of China buyers, if he gets an out of the box 2.2, then its hard luck.
However, in this case, the OP has specifically said "I recently upgraded to HTC wildfire official froyo 2.2.1 update."

Froyo update tensions

Now that the froyo its going to be available for milestone in a few weeks, I am fearing that as in case of droid, they would make it hard to root and install roms.
What do you guys think?
Sent from my Milestone using XDA App
You may have a point here,, It was very hard to flash VR for some of 2.1 versions, but it went very easily with O2 Leak & Asia Pacific but not Vivo Brazil (for me).
any way after receiving the official froyo update I'll give the phone to the wife and get HTC..
The official versions rooted and overclocked with no problems.

I think you should begin fearing about something else because you're a year too late on this fear.

[Q] Which RUU to install for upgrading my HKG Froyo to Gingerbread?

Hi, I've read a lot of threads in the last hours and searched extensively but couldn't find the answer to my specific question:
How do I know which one of the RUUs out of this thread to install? I'm not looking for any fancy ROMs but just the (possibly stock) upgrade to 2.3.
I have an Incredible S, S-OFF via AlpharevX with Clockworkmod Recovery on it. The OS is still the stock Android 2.2.1, 20.23.30.0802U_38.02.1.11_M, 1.37.708.2
I bought the device in Hong Kong and have been waiting for the OTA to Gingerbread for months now (regularly checking manually) without any luck.
Thanks for your help and let me know if you need more info or if I missed anything.

For clean stock ROM, you can flash RUU_Vivo_Gingerbread_S_Virgin_Mobile_AU_2.12.981.2 _R_Radio_20.2803.30.085AU_3805.04.03.12_M_release_ 185029_signed. But actually Android Revoluation HD is a very good tweaked custom ROM based on stock ROM so I don't know why you should not try it.
Just a reminder, to flash the RUU, you need to extract the rom.zip from the exe and flash it with a gold card. There should be plenty of instructions on how to do it in the development forum.
Yes, I saw several tutorials for that.
But that also means that there is no RUU/update.zip out there for my exact version of Froyo? Because otherwise I wouldn't need the Gold Card, right?
Where and how could I find such a version?

I too can't find any Hong Kong RUU from xda or xda.cn. I guess these are our only options.

I almost can't believe that since both HTC and buying stuff in HKG is pretty popular. But I guess that's where we're stuck for now unless one of us starts reading Chinese...

No it does not work unfortunately. Hopefully a fix will be released soon.
Is Alpharev X Plausable for HTC Incredible S Bell 2.28.666.3?
I'd like to ask a slightly different question:
- It appears HTC and/or Bell Canada choose not to unlock their version of the Incredible S.
- It appears HTC and/or Bell Canada seem to have chosen to change their Gingerbread OTA so that the existing Alpharev X no longer works.
Does it follow that Alpharev X can never be made to work? Did they remove the exploit so thoroughly that an XTC clip is the only practical option for S-Off? (I'm guessing that only the Alpharev X authors can answer this question with true authority.)
The reason I ask this question is that I purchased this phone thinking that I'd keep it updated through Bell Canada and eventually install CyanomodGen. However if Bell Canada is locking down the phone more thoroughly that before then I might want to avoid this OTA like the plague. My goal is to understand if the 2.28.666.3 OTA update will ever be useful for those of us who like to toy with our phones and the operating systems therein.
PS: I compare this experience to the HTC Aria on AT&T. When HTC/AT&T released an update for Eclair-to-Froyo they too broke their customers' ability to root. Many people were very disappointed and the general feeling was "we're screwed". I do understand that Alpharev X will unlock the Aria for those unfortunate people who upgraded too quickly, without understanding what they'd lose. Although I myself have not forgiven AT&T for this unfortunate and (probably) avoidable experience.
Is there any way to downgrade from bell 2.3.3 to 2.2.1?

No not without having S-OFF. Even if you could, the radio image for Gingerbread (2.3.3) is not compatible with Froyo (2.2.1) and once you upgrade to a GB radio you cannot reinstall a Froyo radio. So it is a double-whammy.
Stupid updates. Guess we will have to wait patiently......

The AlphaRevX team has been keeping the HTC Android community updated about it's progress via Twitter, not by posting in all of the different HTC forums here. The only time they have made posts in the individual HTC forums has been when they had something ready to test and were soliciting users to test.
I suspect that the GB fix will be no different once a dependable root exploit is discovered. As a matter of fact, I just checked their latest tweet and this is what I found:
http://revolutionary.io/
Since the AlphaRevX team is based in the Netherlands, I doubt if they can even get a Bell IncS to test with. Any development on the IncS will more than likely be on an unbranded version.

OK, so there are 2 possibilities.
1. The new root exploit that they discovered was only implemented on the Sensation and EVO 3D (new devices supported) and the new exploit have not been implemented on the other devices yet.
2. The new root exploit only works on the Sensation and EVO 3D.
Hopefully it is the first option and it will only be a matter of time before the other GB devices are update, too.
I sure hope so. Bad mistake to update. I didn't think it would kick me in the ass.... I was s-off and rooted before the update..... I don't understand what these companies have against computer geniuses, that take time to produce OS's for our phones that we paid for. Its not like we're stealing from the companies. They really break me..

1. Carriers/networks put pressure on phone makers to lock down their phones so people can't remove the bloatware that often comes with stock ROMs, which make money for the carriers/networks.
2. The more people you allow to root phones, the more people will brick them and then try to make a warranty claim. That's hassle the manufacturers don't want.

[Q] Need a little help here :)

Hey guys newb here, Ive recently bought the HTC Inc S on the australian optus network, the thing is it came with so much crap that I dont even need,
I wanted to flash CM7.1 onto my phone but Im unable to get S-OFF due to my HBOOT being 1.16 and theres no support for it on the rev website, so is there any way for me to either get rid of all this bloatware that came with my phone or am i able to re-flash android 2.3.3 or a newer version of android available for the htc inc s that comes without all that bloatware.
This is my first HTC phone and kinda already regretting getting it, its a great phone just wish i got one with a earlier hboot version
I'm in the exact same situation, but still hesitating to go through the HTC Dev unlocking process, that apparently worked for a few guys:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1301475&page=4
Also, the Optus Stock Rom works very well, no bugs or issues...The whole bloatware is very annoying, but I learned to live with it.
The thing is, you never know what type of issues you get by flashing a custom Rom... So that's another down side.
I'm not wanting to flash a custom Rom just want to flash Android 2.3.5 or 2.3.7 with out all the bloatware I thought it would be possible considering its not a custom rom is this possible? Also what's the difference between froyo, gingerbread and honeycombe I always see that popping up in the forums
Sent from my HTC Incredible S using XDA App
Well, there are no "Clean" Roms out there...Except some Custom Roms like CM7, all stock Roms have some degree of bloatware.
Eclair is Android 2.1
Froyo is Android 2.2
Gingerbread is Android 2.3
Honeycomb is Android 3.0 (this version is designed for Tablets only)
Ice Cream Sandwich will be Android 4.0 (to be released on mid November this year and will be the first unified Android platform - both for phones and tablets)
Oh ok cheers thankyou, is there a link for a gingerbread download 2.3.7? Just want a fresh flash with less bloatware

HI, if you really want to flash CM7 to your phone and you have HBOOT 1.16 out there, I suggest you to downgrade your HBOOT to 1.13 by using goldcard, which I did to my phone incredible S and work out successfully. then you can do the S-OFF by AlphaRev, after that get your phone rooted which I think you can find in other thread as well if u successfully downgrade HBOOT to 1.13..
I got the source from a chinese forum (downgrade to HBOOT 1.13) so I think there is a guide for that in english as well but i didn't search for it..
hope this help..

Upgrade IncS to ICS via HTCDev website

I am using an incredible s on Virgin Mobile Canada. I am being told that this device is not being updated to Android 4.0. Instead, HTC told me to go to htcdev[dot]com/devcenter/downloads to download the operating system. I have a couple questions;
1. What region do I use; TW, WWE, AU, TUR, SPA, HK CHT, CN CHS, etc. ?
2. What description number; 4.08.1400.5, 4.14.980.2, 4.10.708.1, etc. ?
And most importantly,
3. How do I do install the new operating system on my phone?
Would be a great help! Thanks! :cyclops:

and is it possible to do on a mac via the htcdev website?

Virgin Mobile gave you bad information. At the HTCDEV.com site, you will only find the kernel source code for the devices. HTC no longer has a public download site where you can download the actual RUU (ROM Update Utility).
You need to go to the Development section and look at the "Shipped ROMs" sticky thread. There you will find a link to a site that has several RUU's for the IncS. You probably want to get the ICS WWE 4.10.405.1 RUU.
Upgrade, deregionalise without GoldCard?
QUOTING FROM THE DEVELOPMENT THREAD (I'm not allowed to post there):
Default HTC releases 3 ICS RUU on HTCDEV.com
HTC has posted 3 Incredible S ICS RUUs on [htcdev]
All 3 are labeled 4.14.405.2 and when I examined the N.American/Canadian version here is what I found:
1. android-info.txt lists all IncS modelids and has wildcards for most CID. This means that this RUU is generic and probably could be used on any IncS WITHOUT the need for a goldcard.
2. HBOOT version is now 2.03.
3. A newer radio is included.
ENDQUOTE.
Thanks for this, I've been reading the forums for two days now trying to figure out what the best way to upgrade my Incredible S is. This looks like it might be it, but I would like to make sure -- any advice is appreciated.
I am using an Incredible S from Virgin Mobile Canada. It is running the stock Android 2.3.3 OTA update from August 2011. I left Canada and paid to have Virgin SIM unlock the phone. Since then I have never seen another operating system update notification, I assume because I am now decoupled from Virgin's update server or some such.
The phone is S-ON and that's fine, I do not need anything fancy or custom, at least for now. I would just like my phone to receive stock HTC Incredible S upgrades -- I know there is one for 2.3.5 which I hear is quite good.
I spent last night making a GoldCard -- but now, as your post makes clear, it looks like there is a stock Android 4 RUU that will upgrade my phone and de-regionalise it. Does this sound right? I have downloaded the RUU you linked (they list 3, but I think it's all the same file, which is encouraging since I want it de-regionalised), and I'll hunt down a Windows machine to run it if indeed this is what I want.
Two further questions:
How best to backup the phone? I've seen apps like Titanium but it looks like the phone needs to be rooted. Is it really possible to revert back to 2.3.3 afterwards? From what I'm seeing it looks as though downgrading can be as hard as upgrading.
Do we know if this release of Android 4 is really better than 2.3.5? If it's still buggy, perhaps using the GoldCard and 2.3.5 would be worth it.
Thanks very much.
I understood that your phone is s-on, but do you still have warranty to force you to stay, or you want to try to s-off? I'm asking you this cause if you s-off your device you'll have a wide range of possibilities for roms without need to make a gold card or use RUUs, even with Revolutionary hboot. Also, returning back to s-on from Revolutionary s-off is not hard at all.

Regarding S-OFF, I will certainly think about that in the future; for now I'm happy with just sticking to the official HTC upgrades and see how I like it.
I agree that this new ICS RUU from htcdev looks like it will work straight out of the box, as it were. Only my two final questions remain:
1. How best to backup the phone?
2. Is ICS going to run slowly/buggily on my Incredible S (now an older phone)? I suppose the only way to be sure is to try it...
Thanks again.

There have been complaints of ICS running slowly on IncS, that is with the official release, however many custom roms are lightning fast..

This is the file I used to upgrade my incs to ICS: http://dl4.htc.com/RomCode/Source_and_Binaries/One_Generic_code_Vivo.zip
I'm on Bell Canada, the above file is a generic Canadian ROM. You'll be missing the Virgin bloatware, but if you need it, you can get it from the Google Play Store.
How are you finding it runs, noticeably better or worse than Gingerbread?
Thanks.
