So my company's corporate email requires certain security features on my phone be enabled when you connect to it via the mail app. I'm guessing this is exchange.
It requires my lock screen to be pin-protected. It also has a disclaimer that they can access my phone remotely and delete email.
I don't like this feature at all. Is there a way to "trick" the network into thinking my phone actually has these security features enabled when they really aren't? I just want to be able to pull mail down and read it, I don't want the network to have access to my phone remotely in any way, shape, or form. I also don't want the network requiring any sort of configuration on my phone.
Thanks in advance!
You can try this .apk
I dont think its a bad feature especially if you lose your phone you can wipe it via your exchange server. I have that option via my OWA

Thanks for the help. I'm supposed to install this on my Captivate? I have mine rooted using Cognition, but for some reason I can't install it from Astro, it seems like Astro thinks it is already installed and just allows me to run it. When I run it, it looks exactly like the Android Mail app. Is this accurate?
Also when I setup the exchange account, it says this account needs to remotely control some security features of the phone. Do I allow this? Does the program fake the network into thinking that it has control over those features when it really doesn't?
I just need some help understanding how I'm supposed to use this. Thanks.
Goto your system/app folder and drop the apk in there. Reboot and then reload your settings. I believe it does bypass the security like you say. Accept the prompts as well.

I'm looking for help. When I connect to my company's exchange server, it forces down policies that turn off data when roaming, and requires a 6 digit pin to be entered in at least once every 15 minutes. My phone is rooted, running DarkDroid, deodexed and debloated. I'm trying to find a way to remove that PIN requirement. As to sync to exchange without allowing the sync to be a phone administrator. Can anyone help me with that?
Sounds like an inherited setting that your company has synced to it when you synced your company account to it. My dad's droid x acts similarly, and so does my D3 with my school email. Allowing the phone to sync with a corporate account allows for them to do things like that (like in my case it would be remote wiping, not a forcing of certain data services).
Yes, but with a rooted phone, I should be able to maintain the email without using their policies. That's my goal. And remote wipe is indeed in effect. Its very upsetting.

I'm actually an e-mail administrator for my company and am interested in this thread, as this would be a huge violation of security policies and would create a HUGE risk, which would require us to re-evaluate our mobile device policy.
A potential work-around for your issue might be to use TouchDown, I think there is a way to only prompt you for the passwords only when you open up work related emails.
I only hope your not from my company. Tho I'm certain there's a way to spoof the exchange server. It only needs to think that I have the policies. It doesn't check as the policies can't be removed while the account is active. Ill update this when I figure it out....and I will figure it out.

There is an app in the Market called "Enhanced Email" that I have been using since the OG droid came out. It allows you to sync an exchange account and bypass exchange security policies. It is a paid app, but worth it for what it does. You set up the account using the web access url and it works beautifully.

Bottom line is if you don't want to have a pin, etc, don't sync email to exchange. Either abide by the rules or don't use the service.
Try an imap connection instead?
Or get your company to use Good. We do.

Abide by the rules or don't use it, then you suggest another method of connection? Irony much?
That said, rules don't bother me. The fact that they can remote wipe my device based off a pin bothers me. Limiting my control over my device bothers me. You're right, I don't have to use it. But I want my cake and eat it too. And by all means, I'll have my cake!
FOUND!
There's an email apk that completely removes the security from the app. Can't enforce that which does not exist. I doubt there's a way "rectify" this without creating your own email app that you would push to a device.

Hello,
I am trying to connect my S4 to home computer/wifi through Kies but when I tap "Kies via Wi-Fi" the screen just greys out after I accept the wifi warning popup.
I think I may have disabled something that Kies requires to work in my efforts to slim down the system.
For example I quarantined all the AT&T apps and Samsung Apps Widget, Samsung Books,Games,Hub,Music,Text-to-speech engine,WatchOn,WatchON Video.
First, make sure you are in the correct forum. This one is for the S4 Active, not the S4.

Give air droid a try. It's better than kies.

Did you read my signature. This is an ACTIVE on AT&T, hence the "quarantined AT&T apps"
And I am trying to figure out why THIS app does not work, not find an alternative. I know Kies will sync with my Outlook calendar. I don't know if Air-Droid will or not but I already have Kies installed on my PC and supposedly also on the phone.

For some reason your sig was not showing when I replied. I sync my Outlook calendar and contacts without ever using Kies. So much easier. Look into Outlook Connector.

Outlook connector? I know how it connects to various social media but how to sync just with my phone wirelessly?
I'm trying to avoid having to plug the phone into a cable and avoid paying for a 3rd party app.
Outlook Connector has nothing to do with social media. It is a plug-in for Outlook that allows it to sync with any Microsoft Exchange client without ever connecting the phone to a PC. You set up your e-mail account on the phone as an Exchange client and then it can sync with Outlook. You don't have to have a Hotmail account, but it works better with one. I have been using this method for years to sync my Android phones with my Outlook contacts, calendars and tasks. There is a lot of info on the internet on how to do this.
OK well this is interesting, possibly embarassing but I'm not sure...
In Connections/Connect and Share/Kies via Wi-Fi I press that, say OK to wi-fi warning and get screen greyed out.
So I went over to the play store and downloaded the Kies App...
Which works fine.
But the Connections/kies button still does not work. I'm not going to worry about it any more. Thanks for reading my mania..

I must be confusing Outlook SOCIAL connector... Anyway I don't have an Exchange account. I'm on the "free" band wagon as much as possible.

You don't need an Exchange account, you just need to install the free Outlook Connector on the PC you have Outlook on with your calendar and contacts. When you setup the e-mail account on your phone do so as a Microsoft Exchange account, not standard POP3 or anything else. The plug-in is free and there's nothing to buy other than Outlook.
Here's one link with lots of info on how to do this.

Getting Kies to work takes an act of Congress, the sun/moon/Earth/Jupiter and Pluto have to be in alignment during a transit of Venus and you also need exactly $765432.10 in your BofA checking account on Black Friday the 13th. Once all that's set, touch your nose with your right ring finger and do a keyboard combo of command+tab+2+3+6 and hit the enter key with your right elbow to click on the 'connect' button in Kies (making sure you don't hit the shift key on accident).
Or you just find a better alternative. Kies is garbage and works less then half the time (if you're lucky). I've tried it on Mac OSX, Windows 7 and 8 and 3 different Samsung phones (2 S4As and a Rugby Smart). It's never worked properly for me so I gave up, froze it all and uninstalled it from all my machines. I think it's been the same experience for most people as well, unfortunately.
I love the idea of OK Google Now, but have been told that it won't work if you are running an Exchange email account. Apparently, when you talk to it, you have to manually unlock the screen before it will do its thing.
Here's my question. Is there a way to disable the lock screen, so OGN can work hands free?
Thanks in advanc.
Use touchdown for exchange instead of native email app... even if it didn't do this I would recommend it.. Best exchange integration since leaving Blackberry..

Do you, in fact, know whether Touchdown doesn't require a lock screen?
Thanks.

Touchdown has it's own pin screen separate from the phones lock screen. So it still fulfills the Exchange requirements without locking up your phone.

So, "OK, Google Now," will work hands-free without having to manually unlock the Moto X if I use Touchdown?
BTW, I'm buying a Moto X tomorrow, thus the questions.
Much appreciated.
On the topic of the email client and Exchange Active Sync, the only OK Google Now function that works with a PIN or password lock screen is to make phone calls. I have the Moto X with an Exchange account set up using the default client and all I can do hands free at the lock screen is make phone calls. I'm no expert but one would think an Exchange Active Sync policy to enforce a lock screen PIN or password is determined by the account set up and not by the email application used. Just my 2 cents...

Touchdown sets up its own little sandbox that all the activesync policies will be applied to. So you can use the rest of the phone without locking if you choose. There are also Exchange policy bypass solutions out there if you have root.

I found that I could select None in the Security settings to bypass the lockscreen. So, now I can just say OK, Google Now and everything works flawlessly.
Problem solved!
For those who have enforced security settings, like me, selecting None, or anything your IT guys don't allow, won't be an option. In that case you can root, install Xposed, and then one of the Exchange security bypass modules within Xposed. If you already have the security restrictions in place, remove and re-add the Exchange account from your phone.
I went through all this just so I could use a NFC Skip tag in my car's holder with Google Now. I still use a PIN as only an idiot would walk around with a completely unlocked phone all the time.

I use the stock Exchange app and don't love the restrictions that it put son my device (because it takes the functionality of the phone away). I looked at Touchdown as a replacement, but it doesn't seem to integrate the calendar. I don't really care much about reading my email on my phone, I mostly just delete stuff I don't need or see if there is something real urgent to go to my PC for.
What I do value a lot from it is my calendar. I have my Outlook calendar synced as well and it merges with my Google calendar (and my girlfriend's Google calendar) in my agenda widget on my home screen.
That said, are there any good apps (free or pay) that can do an Exchange calendar only, and potentially don't require the same restrictions as the full setup? OR, can I get the calendar from Touchdown to integrate into my Google Calendar app/agenda widget somehow?
I suspect it probably isn't possible, but I'd love if it was.
My question is, if I dont like battery life with activesync or feel too restricted can I odin back to factory default to successfully take off encryption and do as I wish with device? Any pros/cons? I'm really not sure how they encrypt androids, any ideas?
If you are talking about work email (exchange) it is required when using the stock email client to allow remote delete, etc etc. A way around this: Aftermarket email client. I used MailDroid when I cared about this. Hope that helps.

Yes it is work email exchange. Maildroid gets instant push? Would this be like using a browser?
MailDroid gets push, it sometimes is a few minutes delayed in my experience, but never bad. No, not like using a browser, it's just another email app that's not stock and doesn't integrate with the phone as an admin, etc. Look it up in the Play Store.
Maildroid didnt work, says cant connect to server. How bad would battery life be if I allowed them to encrypt my phone for push? I wouldnt be able to root once this happens? Should I root before I let them?
Cannot connect to server? Check your settings again, Maildroid worked just as good if not better than stock email in most situations for me. I work for an IT firm and used it to test email for many clients.
To be honest, it's a requirement that you "activate" email administrator for exchange so if the company decides (which I have yet to see) they can remotely wipe the device incase you, for example, keep sensitive information on it and leave the company. I don't know of any system wide "encryption" going on in regards to exchange and I have a very active exchange account on my S6 edge (again, considering I work in IT and service over 100 companies) and have no battery issues.
Basically, don't take this the wrong way, you're overthinking this/worrying a bit much. It's not really a big deal, battery drain, or in any way detrimental to your phone. If Maildroid doesn't work for some odd reason, use the stock email app.

I believe they encrypt the device so you have to enable keylock with activesync. I see there are some bypass methods but maybe I shouldnt risk it. I've tried several email clients already and couldnt connect I even tried the manual settings entering my email server and nothing. Maybe it requires I install a certificate. I'm just hoping if they do what they do to my company device and I dont like it, can I odin back to factory settings?
I would think you could just boot into recovery and factory reset, but I guess you'll have to look into that more. Out of all the companies we support none encrypt the device.
