What's your setup - Nook Color General

Hey Guys,
Bought my nook color a few weeks ago. I'm in love. I've been reading more and generally just enjoying the device. But I'm wondering how you have setup your nook.
What’s your launcher? Must have apps? Are you using 2.2 or the stock system? What ebook reader? Keyboard? What else?
Thanks
Fishfoot

i upgraded the kernal because it is much faster than the stock one i got a 1213 quadrant score. my fave apps are angry birds doodle jump astro fancy widgets and dropbox for wireless printing

1.1ghz kernel, autonootered, adw launcher ex.
Must apps are spare parts, setcpu, and for new kernel you need rom manager / clockwork recovery.
I use repligo reader for annotating pdfs for work and school, angry birds for relaxation, beautiful widget for weather and toggle switching, setting profile to turn off Wifi when screen is off helps eliminate reboots.
The must haves depend on your needs, there's one for everything

Don't forget to wipe the cache and dalvik cache as well before flashing the new kernel.

How do you get the gingerbread keyboard? I change the keyboard setting in the Nook Color Tools to that and no keyboard gets displayed.

It's pretty simple, really.
1. Download your kernel of choice here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925451
2. Using Clockwork Recovery, do a backup. (A MUST- just in case something gets boogered up.)
3. Using Clockwork Recovery, wipe Cache partition as well as Dalvik Cache.
4. Flash your desired kernel.
5. Reboot and enjoy.
I've found the OMAP kernels in the above link to be the most stable, and fortunately the fastest.

I was running 1.0.1, auto-nootered 12.2.25, and installed a ton of apps and generally was learning about Android lastnight on my new nook.
Tonight, I put on CWM, made a current backup, and tried my first kernel flash.
I did the 950 from dalingrin, and chose clear cache option.
On reboot, all my rooted stuff was gone except for Market, Superuser, and Nook tools. Anyway.. without softkeys I couldn't get far, so I have just restored from my backup.
So, does a kernel flash normally wipe out apps/settings or did something go wrong?

It shouldn't. To my knowledge, it should only wipe out the previous kernel.

So if I upgrade the kernel to the 1.1ghz will I lose battery life it possibly overheat tgr nook? Is this basically an overclock?

Not "basically", it IS an overclock.
As for battery life, there's this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10842223&postcount=49
Edit: I haven't noticed any excessive heat on my NC after flashing this kernel. But remember, there's ALWAYS risk involved.

OK thanks. I've tried 1.1 Ghz OMAP and it works great! 1207 in quadrant!
I think the 'clear data and cache' option in CWM was my problem before, I guess clear data is a bad choice?
This time, I cleared 'internal caches' with Astro, then flashed the kernel in Rom Manager without checking any options.
Seems to work great, I do wonder how this will affect battery life and cpu temps.
Does anyone know of a good (free preferred) widget to monitor system usage/temps

I was wondering if you did the "Clear data and cache" option. Clearing data isn't what you'd want and is probably what boogered it. You can always just boot straight into recovery either by the option in RomManager or by booting up & holding Power and the "N" button and do your Cache-clearing and Kernel-flashing there.

Wow. So I just put the 1.1 Cache in place and I followed the battery/performance tips found here:
http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/nook-color-technical/5119-setcpu-settings-nookcolor.html
To say it is faster would be an understatement. When I load Aldiko I don't even see the interim load screen... it just jumps into my library. Also, Firefox loads faster too.
BTW, can anybody make a browser recommendation?

Cyanogenmod Question

Hey, i'm having an issue with cyanogenmod 7 on my Nook Color. Switched from cupcake because I thought I'd have greater compatibility with apps. Since the change, programs that once worked (e.g. snesoid, beautifu widgets) won't book. Just get hung and ask me if I want to force close. I'm using the tablet tweaks and everything... is this just how it is, or did I mess up somewhere along the line? Thanks.
I can't speak for the specific apps or ROM ur using, but yeah this happens with the occasional app. Remember that u r using an unfinished product. It will get better as CM refines it. Android as a whole is a buggy system. Its never going to be as functional as something like iOS.
Did you wipe either Cache and/or Data partitions before flashing CM7? Wiping the Data partition will wipe all installed applications and settings, however, it will prevent any weird issues arising from incompatible settings across different ROMs and OS versions.
I don't know about snesoid, but my personal experience is that BW works very well in CM7.

Sounds like something's wrong. My Beautiful Widgets works great. I'd try reinstalling using these instructions:
I have similar problems with both Beautiful Widgets and the XDA app. When I log into the XDA app, it gives me a force close pop up. However, when I use the XDA app without logging in, I don't have any problems.
Which instructions are you referring to in that MASSIVE 100+ page post?
Thanks.

The first post on that page.. That's how I flashed CM7 (pretty standard method, really) and I have no problems with Beautiful Widgets. Haven't tested XDA app. To be honest, I have problems with XDA app on my Droid 1, CM7, so I never use it.
Thanks everyone! I installed following the instructions from wiki.cyanogenmod http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Barnes_&_Noble_Nook_Color:_Full_Update_Guide
I will give it another shot and report back when I do. Right now I've gone back to cupcake, but still having a problem with beautiful widgets- gets stuck on the "loading skins" screen, never loads.
p.s. I *did* wipe the cache and data partitions
"Cupcake"?? I think you mean "Eclair"?
Cupcake was many versions ago, before the Nook existed, and the Nook Color ships with Eclair...
So, I switched to cyanogen, but I couldn't get beautiful widgets or snesoid to run. Trying to revert to factory settings, but every time I try I get stuck on the word ANDROID in blue.
I've tried hard booting 8x, I've tried running the script to change the bootcount but this just gets me to clockworkmod. I try running the factory reset/data wipe option, but it clearly doesn't remove cyanogen. I've also tried sideloading a 1.1 version zip, all to no avail. Any suggestions? Would uninstalling clockworkmod help?
Are you sure you followed the 8-failed-boots method precisely? That really should have brought you back to stock, at least as far as I understand.
http://nookdevs.com/Flash_back_to_clean_stock_ROM
I really do think so. It brought me to clockwork recovery instead of the usual factory reset...
Well I'm out of my league (I haven't done this) but it seems there are still ways... You could check out http://www.androidtablets.net/forum...install-cwr-save-root-revert-stock-image.html or do some searches here.
Now I'm stuck on the N sign instead of android... Tried everything in the link here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914690 including the boot partition. No dice. The only way i can get it to boot is to reinstall cyanogen. Is there some trick to uninstalling cyanogen? Any other suggestions out there?
It seems like cyanogen just WON'T WIPE. Even when I format my data, it still loads, despite clockworkmod reporting that it has been formatted. Ideas please!

Bummer. Yeah, that's the link. You might want to look in Nookdev too. They oulined a process that was similar, but they said you have to do the image restore AND unregister... though it's been a while since I've looked at it. It might be more helpful. Good luck in getting it back to stock.
This is unfortunate. I had been under the impression it was a LOT easier to get back to stock. (I still bet someone who knows will give you the right guidance.)
Oh well, I guess it's a good argument for using SD card booting exclusively -- I can't wait for a final CM7 SD Card ISO.

Yes, use Revotoolkit to install recovery. After installing, hit the check recovery version, it should be 4.0.0.2 or something like that. Then reboot into recovery.

No .tot needed. Just need to grab the stocked rooted backup off the forums from cubed. Restore that, wipe data, uninstall cwm pull both updates wipe data, and internal for safe measure, then reroot using mt's root method. He has everything you need in his post.

Now that I'm back on Verizon, I try to flash cm9 to my safe system and no dice...black screen no matter how long I wait :-\ hopefully it's just some dumb little step I keep missing. It's not a wipe issue because my safe system hasn't had any custom ROMs flashed on it yet, and I've wiped anyway lol.
Before activating back on Verizon I did a full reset via the fast/easy unbrick method. Seemed to get everything clean.

I've been pretty happy with Maverick 3.0 as well. Fixed the physical keyboard (thanks Endoroid). I had Liberty before that and it was very good except no real option to enable or disable data roaming, there is no battery/data manager. Mav is not as customizable as Liberty (although it does have a toolbox with various themes to choose from) - it's been smooth and stable so far. I'm using Mav with Tag Home as a launcher and I keep a bunch of quick shortcuts collected in a couple of folders in the drop down using Bar Shortcuts.

Yes I agree, I wish Liberty had the data roaming option available. I read about a line that can be added to Liberty's build.prop to turn it on. But I also read that it may require a wipe. I did it anyway (without wipe) and will see what happens on my next trip to the US...

Do a search in the dev forum for 'nightlies'. In the thread you'll find the download link, I think it's 'terrachata'. Install the file with cwm. (install zip > choose zip from sdcard). Do a wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache beforehand . If coming from cm9 alpha 2, no need to wipe/delete data, factory reset.

Absolutely no need to wipe anything.
I've flashed each nightly "over the top" of the previous version without any problem.
You can use Rom Manager to flash. Just tell it to use the existing version of CWM when it asks and check the version you have manually installed either 2 or 3 and away you go.
Then you can install all zip updates and mods the same way.
Check out buildprop-supreme-rohan-v1.1 for some cool tweaks including 120dpi screen settings.

With any android system, you should ALWAYS wipe at least cache and dalvik after flashing a rom update. It only takes 5 seconds, and can help you avoid big issues.

DON'T use Rom Manager to flash roms, it's just a bad idea. Many devices have been bricked because of that app. Just boot into recovery, install the zip, and wipe cache and dalvik. It only takes an extra 30 seconds to do it through recovery, and will make it so you don't have any issues.

Thanks for all the great advice! It would be nice to have a thread about the stability of the latest nightlies before you do a flash. How do you do a nandroid backup before an update? Does it take a lot of space? How do you do a restore if all doesn't go well?

There's one in the dev section.

Boot into recovery, and before doing anything else, go to Backup and Restore, then hit Backup. Backups will probably take about 600mb or so, more if you have a lot of apps on there. You only need to keep one backup on the device, and you can copy the backup off the memory onto a computer if you want to save space.

The same way you would flash a rom. Boot into recovery, wipe data/cache/dalvik, then go to backup and restore, and hit restore.
I hate being a NOOB about this...I know there is a changelog that you can find here: http://review.cyanogenmod.com/#q,status:merged+branch:ics,n,z
My question is does anyone know where I can find a less complex or more simple explanation (for us noobs that doesn't understand computerish sometimes! ) of what changes they have made to the nightlies?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Sorry again for the very noob question!

The nightlies are basically compiled each night from the cm9 source. Its an automated process so the changes are what was changed in the cm source in the last 24 hours. Usually its nothing major, if its something big you'll probably see an alpha posted on rootzwiki.

I'm interested in moving my backup from my touchpad to my computer to save space, however, my "backups" folder is empty...
As I'm writing this I'm realizing that I may have preformed a backup before doing a factory settings/data reset/wipe so would that be erased when I did the wipe/reset?
I know now that if coming from another version of CM9 their is no need to wipe the factory data/settings, instead just wipe the other two (forget what their called)
Should be in a folder called ClockworkMod
After updating nightlies
What should I expect to have to re install?
gapps?
dpi fix?
any launcher settings?
what typically breaks/resets and has to be re-configured?
DPI fix is all.
Any changes you make to your build.prop file will be erased on an update from one nightly to the next (or CM9 to another nightly). Anything else - apps, gapps, settings, etc), should not change.
Personally, I've become used to the 160DPI default, which works quite nicely on the latest nightly. Yes, there isn't as much screen space, but I don't mind. I don't have THAT many things I need on the screen at once - one widget, half a dozen or so app shortcuts, that's about it for my main home screen. So 160 works pretty well, especially for office docs and kindle reading.
160 v 120, what do they actually look like when compared? I know that running 160 has the portrait app grid view off kilter (landscape looks fine)
120 I find ends up with a row and at least one column off of the screen, so you can't use them. 160 doesn't have that issue unless you go portrait.

[Q] Greetings!

Hello!
This is my first time posting although I've been doing a little reading off and on. In order to save money, I bought an unlocked Captivate off eBay last fall, and I'm running it on StraighTalk. After doing some research on ways of removing the unwanted bloatware on my phone, I decided to try a custom ROM as well. I'd like a little advice or tips if you have any. Here are my plans:
First, I need to root the phone. Here's what I've found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...+the+captivate
Best way? New, or improved method?
Next, I was going to follow these instructions to customize my ROM:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?annotat...&v=hadizqVkwn0
This seemed to be the best video tutorial for flashing to Jellybean. I found a Youtube video that shows the rooting process as well, but the kid doing it was very confused as to what the next step was. There was a lot of mumbling and shotty camera work.
I've never done anything like this before, but I'm very excited to give it a try. I like techy things, so this is a very interesting topic for my and could make for a fun new hobby!
Thanks in advance,
Courtney
So I went ahead with the root process. Everything seemed fine until I tried to install Superuser. It keeps failing to install. In recovery, it says "E:signature verification failed." Any ideas?

did u install CWM recovery? , you need a custom recovery for that to work.. if you do have cwm , try toggling signature verification in recovery , if that doesnt work,
read below

No, I didn't. The directions I followed didn't mention CWM recovery. I downloaded another superuser by ChainsDD, and it installed. Then, I installed Busybox per the instructions. So, I assume I don't have root? Seemed like everything went through just fine once I installed the other superuser app. What's the best way to determine if you have root?

Thanks for your help! I installed Titanium and it does seem that I have root. I did have ROM Manager by ClockworkMod installed on the phone before this process. Is that the same as CWM? Sorry, so very new to this!

My next step will be to flash CWM Recovery. Any advice here? I'm running 2.3.5 presently.

Okay. Flash the Corn 7 kernel. You will find it in the captivate development forum. You will still have a KK4 gingerbread system, but you will have CWM recovery, ability to try overclocking to 1200, and voodoo Sound which will make a huge difference in audio quality with your headphones/ear buds.
IMHO you should uninstall ROM manager. You will be able to access CWM either from power menu or key combination. It looks like a simple character based terminal, you use volume keys and power keys, or the 4 capacitive keys to navigate through menus. You can do full nandroid backups, clear caches, format partitions, and flash roms and updates in zip format - all with CWM recovery.
To access voodoo Sound controls, you need to install the free app from Google Play. If you want to support developer Supercurio, then buy the license key, although you don't need the license with Corn.
To access Overclocking in that ROM, you will need to install an app like No frills CPU control.
And KK4 with Corn 7 is the starting point for being able to upgrade to most JB roms.

If he wants to stay on gingerbread that's fine but I would recommend updating to jellybean if that's what he wants. In that case he should flash the corn kernel and then flash a cm10.1 nightly because cm10.1 will partition everything for jellybean and update the recovery. If then he wants all of the extra features: voodoo color, etc he can use either stratosk's semaphore or the unofficial semaphore for the captivate which has even more features. After that he can flash any ROM he wants although I would recommend staying with CM cause it the only one with nightly updates. Although if you want even more features I highly recommend the PAC ROM.

I got the CWM Recovery installed and I've made a full backup of my current OS. I need to get my contacts backed up, then I'm ready to start flashing!
