[Q] Opera 10 Installs Side-by-Side - Touch Diamond2, Pure Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have Operab browser 9.7 that comes with the ROM.
Now when I installed Opera 10.0 it did a side-by-side install (automatically) and now I have 2 Opera sitting (9.7 and 10.0).
How can I make sure to get rid of the previous version before Installing 10.0 or How do I uninstall OLD version?
Thanks.

Opera 10 can't remove 9.7 . Maybe if you find the .cab for 9.7 and install it, you will be able to remove it.

OK Thanks for the reply.
Just grabbed a 9.7 cab from Google (http://www.mobileunderground.info/showthread.php?t=7763&page=1) installed that and able to remove 9.7 finally.
Now I have only 10.0.
Cool.
Thanks.

In case of hard reset, it will appear again.
You will have to do the same.

Or cook Opera 10 into ROM and remove 9.7

Yes I am doing that now. And hope Opera 10 will work fine as Default Browser after I install/cook from ROM (Or do I need to do any thing to make that default?).
I think Opera 10 does not support the hardware zoom bar. As After I install the Opera 10 (when I has 2 Opera) I could see the Opera 10 did not respond to the zoom bar .
Thanks

I installed Opera 10 to SDCard leaving Internet Explorer in ROM so that my Manila will still have the short-cuts intact. During Opera installation it will ask if you want it to be the default browser. I like it that way and I like Opera coz my bookmarks are save to the cloud. By not cooking Opera into ROM I also give the option others to decide if they want Opera.
thanks

Opera browser

is there a difference between opera mobile and opera mini browser? is it worth the extra money to buy opera mobile instead of using the free opera mini?
Opera mini is a java app, though it is pretty good, I would say even better than opera mobile. But, it might have problem running on some devices depending on which java client the device uses.
would opera mini be just as good as opera mobile on my kaiser?
i recommend opera mobile since it installs as a program which can also be set as your default browser. Opera mini is a java app which is not added as a default browser and you have to load the java app to get to it.
if i was to buy the current opera mobile version, and opera 9 comes out, would i have to buy opera 9 as well, or would opera allow me to upgrade for free?
Opera 8.65 has been "finally" released few days ago.
However, it has few problems with license/registration if you check their website.
As for Opera 9, I am not sure if it will be released this year (or ever be released!).
Opera Mobile 9 = Duke Nukem Forever
I use Opera Mini 4 beta 2 and I must say: best browser ever. Sure, it's a bit anoying that you have to launch the Java app first, but you quickly forget about it when you work with the browser. Perfect experience I must say.
Maarten,
Which midlet manager do you use? JBed?
Can you download files using Opera Mini? I often download .3GP files from the internet
How is the performance when browsing a large site? I found PIE sucks in this area, often stuck and I have to soft-reset.

Much better than PIE.
I alo recommend that you ALL follow the General forum ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=256 ) in here as I've answered all the questions asked in this thread there in my Opera Mini 4 beta 2 review ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=326368&highlight=Opera+Mini ) and WM Web Browser Bible ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=301009 ).
Last time I used Opera mini I couldn't make a backup of or restore my bookmarks. That's really annoying, when you want to restore a backup or install a new ROM. The pro is that is reduces the internet traffic. Opera mobile is much better when internet traffic is not important.
If I have Pixelbrowser - would adding Opera Mini be redundant ?
Would you just add Opera Mobile for better default support ?
I just installed Opera Mini, and ... it works fine! fast! and nice!
I also created a shortcut and hack the security warning according to this info:
http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-...ed-includes-info-new-java-midlet-manager.html
Then I changed the "IE button" to load Opera Mini
I like it so much
But there are several things I dont like:
1. When I download .3GP from a link, it will be picked up by Internet Explorer Why cant Opera handle that? I mean asking to download and save ...
2. The browsing History is displayed in the Startup Screen! Can this be disabled?
Anyone know how to fix them?

How!!!???? Please tell!!! I have it loading my midlet manager - but I don't know how to do this.
------------
FYI To do it create a shortcut in notepad on your PC and copy it over to your Start Menu with :
28#"\windows\jbed.exe" -run s0_
where s*_ is the number in the menu where opera is... brilliant!

Why Opera?

I have Opera on my Kaiser. 26 days to go for free.
But I have problems being motivated to buy the version.
Anybody an opinion?
Have no problems with IE till now. But maybe I am missing some important features.
Huib
Have you tried "Opera Mini" ?
If not, try it, you will never go back to IE
It is super fast, very compact, and works, also with that neat zoom/unzoom!.
Again, the browsing and rendering speed of Opera Mini is superb.
Drag and scroll.
Highlight and copy text
Save images
Successfully renders web pages more frequently than does the IE - IMHO

Try scrolling down a long page with PIE and you will know why Opera Mini is better. PIE almost grinds to a halt after the first screen or two has scrolled up.
EDIT: Update to above entry. PIE now has a fix for scrolling issue - downloadable here: IE Slow Scroll Fix for Kaiser_Tilt.cab

Hi!
can Opera-mini and other apps be run from the memory card satisfactorily?
i.e are they slower?
I wonder if my other applications such as Resco Explorer 2007 and Code Wallter can be run from the card too?
Ofiaich
Don't take what I say as gospel but when I had Opera installed on the SD card it didn't function completely correct - like didn't follow email links correctly along with a couple of other glitches etc.
Likewise I have always been a bit hesitant to install things that operate so cloely with the OS, like Resco Explorer, to the card. They have always seemd to work much better on the main memory. Just my opinion.
Thus I have Opera mini and Resco Explorer installed on the main memory while just about everything else I have on the SD card.
jcrompton!
Thanks very much! Sounds good to me, and I have space in the main memory!
I will get on and download Opera mini !
Ofiaich
Opera Can Handle Regular Youtube!
Please Dont quote me on this, but if i am correct, Opera (paid version, not mini) can render many types of complicated flash websites including Youtube(Yes the regular one not youtube mobile). I say this because i tested it for myself, a while ago on my mda vario or vario 2 (sorry cant remember). What seemed to be a slight problem though was, it ran out of memory frequently (ram) and as such the program would not start if other applications were running in the background.
Opera users on WM6, your reviews and thoughts on this are much appreciated!

OK - so I just figured out how to get Opera Mini work via the Java app under programs -- have you been able to get email links and other http links to automatically be opened by Opera Mini - I made some registry changes to get Opera Mobile to be the default browser, can you get Opera Mini to do that ? (wasn't sure since it is buried as a Java program)

Well you asked for it. I am going to have to quote you. Youtube does not work on my 8925 in Opera, neither the moble specific version (says media file type not supported) nor the full youtube site. Ugh.
I agree that you wouldn't really want to use Opera Mini on the Kaiser....Opera Mobile though is the bomb! I just wish it was free like the Mini version is, but it's good enough to pay for anyway. PIE just is not very good at rendering most webpages.
opera is very good browser but the built in pie some times show websites better than opera example http:\\www.xda-developers.com

I don't agree , it's superbly fast, it's free and it has good viewing settings. For straightforward surfing it's fine. I say give it a try you may be surprised.

I just hit YouTube with Opera on mine and any 'watch now' links open the video for streaming in WMP. Is that normal?

Opera 9.5

Hi, I'm getting a kaiser next month, how does the opera 9.5 zoom feature behave on it? Is it a smooth experience?
Not sure what you mean by Opera 9.5. I'm pretty sure that the latest Opera Mobile is 8.65 and that the latest Opera Mini is 4. Opera Mobile featuers no zoom. Opera Mini's zoom is smooth and works very well on my Kaiser. Just make sure you flash on the Dutty WM6.1 ROM and your phone should behave flawlessly and fast. Anything else is unacceptable.

Hi:
Opera 9.5 is currently available as a beta. I believe the official version should be out soon. I haven't tried it, so unfortunately I can't comment on the zoom, but I've heard it is a great browser.
I'm sure someone will come along soon who can give you an actual review
Prpose to embed this thread in the already existing Opera 9.5 beta thread.
Opera 9.5 is way better than the other Opera browsers imo. The zooming is smooth, sometimes may take a second to re-render it. I like the beta can't wait for the official release.

Same here. The beta is very impressive. Unfortunately the version I had was quite buggy and crashed my phone from time to time so had to take it off.
Anyone heard of a release date? Seems a long time now since they announced it and put up the demo on their website.
So does the 9.5 Beta offer 'proper' page rendering and zooming a la Safari on a certain other phone?

I installed Opera 9.5 Beta QVGA (uninstall version) and it worked awesome until I noticed my HTC home plugin was acting weird. I soft reset now I have NO today screen plugins!! Even though they are ticked and performed many more soft resets and since removed OPERA 9.5 Beta. WTF??? How do I get my today screen plugins to show back on my Today screen? Any ideas beside the almighty Hard reset?? I'm bummed because The new Opera was looking sweet!
Thanks
Very disappointed with the 9.5 beta. Seems a huge step back from Opera Mini 4 (The Java one) to me.
Any word on when the official release will come out?

yeah, i'm wondering the same thing here too...i love opera mini 9.5 beta, but its a lil glitchy at times, which is expected in a beta...but then again i just got an email from skyfire a few days ago, and that is the KILL all browser, integrated youtube, flash, and java FTW

I'm not sure if there is an update. I believe we already have Opera Mobile 9.5 (beta), which Opera lists as the current one.
But, if you don't care for the default Opera interface, perhaps you should try Opera Mini?
http://www.opera.com/mini/
For info on the differences between Mobile and Mini:
http://www.opera.com/products/choose/
I have to admit that i find Opera Mobile a hassle sometimes. Adding that the data-charges on my subscription is quite substantial I often use opera mini, wich really is getting good these days.
Still looking for the answer. I really liked Opera on previous devices, but really don't care for it on the Diamond. I don't care for the UI, or lack thereof, and the Favorites is a mess. Zooming and panning is a nice feature, but having to constantly adjust to get a decently rendered page is a pain. PIE is much better for me on the Diamond. Better/familiar user controls and better rendering.
I do have IE on a soft key, but programs that auto switch to the browser still call Opera as the default. Opera also eats a big chunk of phone memory. I have tried the 9.5 Beta and it's some better, but not much and does not delete the existing Opera.
So back to the original question...anybody know how to uninstall Opera and change the System defaults to PIE?
Thanks

help. i want to set opera mini as my main browser.

i searched some threads but havent found anything.
does somebody know how to do it?
want to sync for example the push pages on tf3d that they will open with opera mini...
Ive often wondered if this is possible. I always assumed it wasnt as its a program within a program ie, you open the java program the you open opera mini. I remember seeing some code somewhere once so you can just click on one icon and it opens up both java then opera in one fell swoop. Im just about to go to work so i dont have time to search for it...

yes, totally both 4.2 and 5.0 beta which im loving it more than opera 8.65 and 9.7
I'm afraid it is not possible.
alright, would have been nice, but its not a big thing.
i'll start it the old fashioned way with the icon in the programs-tab.
wooooooowww, opera mini 5 is the god browser, when it got finished and take back the download manager(`cause every time you try a download it redirect you to i.e) it will be perfect, loving it, much more than i.e and opera...
i wish setting opera mini as defaut is really possible...
