I was playing around with my nook last night, disabling apps i dont really need. The following is a list of apps i disabled and any ill effects i found. I take no responsibility if you disable one of these apps and your nook no longer boots.
Calendar.apk.bak
CalendarProvider.apk
Email.apk
GenieWidget.apk
Music.apk
NetworkLocation.apk
Phone.apk
PicoTts.apk
Social.apk
TelephonyProvider.apk
TtsService.apk
VpnServices.apk
one thing i did find that you cannot disable is ContactsProvider.apk When you disable this, you will no longer be able to download apps from the market. They looks like they are going to download, but they never do.
So Far, everything seems to work fine. not really sure if i gain more performance or battery from disabling these apps or not.
If any one has any insight as to why i should not disable some of the apk's i have please let me know.
Ive also disabled those same apps, and also all of the bn stock stuff: adobe air, affiledownoadservice, authenticationsvc, certificate installer, checkin service, everything named com.bn* ,cloud service, drp reader, drm protected storage, library and reader.
No issues, aside from the bn stuff of course not working.
I used titanium to freeze em, didnt delete the apks(mostly)
DO NOT disable google talk, it messes up your market and you will never be able to download things. Take it from experience.

same exact problem with disabling ContactsProvider.apk, good to know
Why disable this stuff? Is it a battery saver at all? Does it increase performance noticeably?

Keeps unwanted apps from running which chews up ram. Less tasks to have to worry about managing. I don't think it affects battery life so much as it enhances performance.

i use root explorer, browse to the folder \system\apps Mount the folder as R/W then renam the files adding .bak to the end. this makes it easy to put them back if i ever needed too, or if disabling them had an ill effect. after your done, make sure you reboot the device for the changes to take effect.

The main reason i disable them is for performance. It really bothers me when i check a task manager, and find apps im not using running in the backround eating up memory and possibly battery. Unfortunately i dont really have any good way to gauge if disabling these apps increases battery life and/or performance. I know disabling alot of these apps really sped up my android based phone. i can only assume i can get the same from disabling them on the nook.

Huh. Doesn't this, in effect, uninstall the apps? Do the icons for them still show up in the tray?
I really want to disable nook virtual Home button on status bar and replace by third party launcher app draw button. Can i disable the default launcher app to remove this. I already disable all BN stuff so it is no use anyway.

If you could, believe me, by now it would have been done. Everyone wants that.
Thx! Was having google service framework force closes after freezing some apps, turns out it's contactsprovider that caused it. Unforsted it and all is good now!!!

After using the gallery app and leaving the phone for a while, check the battery usage of the sensors by typing in *#*#4636#*#* in the dialer. Choose sensor usage and since last unplugged. See if the Gallery is in the list and see what time usage it has taken.
If the time is close to the time since you last used the Gallery then the sensor is unnecessary draining the battery.
WE NEED TO FLOOD SAMSUNG WITH TWEETS AND FACEBOOK MESSAGES WITH THIS PROBLEM! IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!!!
I Get this - Official Froyo JPO - UK CPW Unlocked I9000- CF Root, Voodoo lagfix
Using Just pictures instead, but annoying to say the least as i causes huge battery drain.
yes it happen to me too after upgrade tu JPO..........i really have no idea how to solve it and hope someone come with the solution ASAP!!!!! but hope Samsung will be the first.....my gallery usage is the same time with my phone time after the last charging eventhough i rarely or never use the gallery....!!!! so annoying that need to charge it everyday!!!!
deleting your gallery.apk and replacing it with the latest update from the market fixes it.
How to delete the gallery.apk can be found here on the forums.
Yes! this is crap. Without gallery running I get virtually 0 drainage in standby mode and with gallery on I'm losing about 4-5%/hr =|. I'm wondering if changing the gallery apk will help here...
thanx...but by deleting the gallery will i get a new gallery from the market with beautifull 3D interface like this one? but if it the only way....i got no choice right!!! my battery life is more important...hmmm

I could find gallery 3d developed by Rayman50? I installed the same. Still getting the same drain issue. Or are you talking of some other app?
can you give me some instructions onto how to remove the Gallery app, when ever I try to remove it it keeps saying it cannot find the file even though I'm in the correct directory /system/app/Gallery3D.apk

Use root explorer navigate /system/app from there delete gallery.apk. Restart your phone then install the same from market. Or use adb. I don't know the commands for it though. If someone could help!

Use root explorer or similar to delete the gallery.apk, delete all the cache related stuff it made ( search the forum ) and reboot your device, download the gallery3d app from the market and install, it fixed it for all of us who actually did it.

it refuses to delete, says it deleted but it's still there. i have root, using android mate, given it root access but i just cant delete the file. even in adb, it says the dir is read only
I also get this bug. Thanks for reporting it.
I think you can stop the bug by clearing the ram using the built in task manager and using a level 2 clear memory. I think it's working for me.
Any proper fixes? I really like using the built in Samsung gallery.
Edit: Doesn't work.
yup, had it unplugged for 10hrs 40 mins
the gallery is showing 9hrs 24 mins....WTF!!!!!!
my battery is on 6% turned it off and charing it right now!
I thought there was something really wrong with the battery life...now I KNOW!
Nice find ... Even killing it doesn't stop the use of sensor

does it give a big change after you did it or equal to the Eclair battery life????..and what is the time for your gallery usage after that???
Anybody come up with a solution for this?
Last night I reboot the phone and didn't use the standard gallery for 8 hours and guess what. The gallery drainage stopped. So I am looking for the other apps to replace the standard one.
I removed the Gallery3d.apk and .odex from the system/app folder.
I then rebooted and installed the Gallery 3D app from the market.
Now when I check the sensor battery usage, the gallery time seems to be about the same time I have actually been in the app. So so far, the problem seems solved.
This is a bit annoying especially since the gallery was one of the first things i used just after upgrading to this ROM. Not sure i like the idea of having to delete the bloody app just to get decent usage!

Just make a backup of the original files and it's safe.

Something I've been doing for a while is using Root Explorer (well worth the money) to rename any of the system apps I don't want, mostly having to do with phone stuff (I.e. rename Phone.apk to Phone.apk.bak) which disables that until I rename it back to .apk. now there's no cell standby or phone idle in battery usage! You can also rename things like Telephonyservice.apk and Voicedialer.apk. all these can be found under system/app. Hope that helps!
Edit: Oh, and when you rename Phone.apk it'll go into a force close loop until you reboot. Just hold down the power button till it turns off, then turn it back on, and you'll be good to go!

If I purchase root explorer and use market to download will I lose this app and need to repurchase it if I decide to completely start fresh like I just did with CM7.0.3. I had to download all my apps again from market. They were free apps so not a big deal.
Is it possible to save a purchased app and use again?
Your purchased apps should be tied to your market (google) account and are therefore saved there and not on the device itself. If I understood what you were asking.

Should be easy to tell just go to applications/battery usage and see if cell and phone are consuming, if they are then something is still active even if the apps are not available.
A better option is to Install Titanium Backup(Which you should have anyway) and then find the Phone Apps and "Freeze" them. Much better idea then Renaming.

You can do that with most of the apps, but NOT with Phone.apk, the main one responsible for "cell standby". For me it does take away cell standby and phone idle from battery usage.
And yes, sadly you do have to redo it when installing a new rom, since it reinstalls the system apps.

So anyone have a good list of known Apps that can be renamed/frozen that won't impact tablet performance and *could* potentially lead to better battery life?
Oh and I renamed the apps you (Seth) listed on the first page but Phone Idle and Cell Standby still show in the Battery Usage display. Is this just because they were there and in use in the past and will eventually fall off? I renamed these apps to *.old

Yeah, you'll probably see those still listed in battery use till you shutdown, I think. Then they should be gone.
Here are all the apps I rename, and why:
Booksphone.apk (I use aldiko)
Browser (I use DolphinHD)
Camera (obvious )
CarHomeGoogle (no idea what this even is)
Email (use gmail)
FileManager (use Astro or Root Explorer)
Gallery3D (use quickpic)
MMS (no use for me)
Music (use audiogalaxy, soon to be Music Beta )
Phone (should clear up "cell standby") )
PicoTts (I don't use TTS ever)
Protips (No use now)
SoundRecorder (No mic )
Talk (don't use it)
TelephonyProvider (no use, may also be a cause of "cell standby" or "phone idle")
TtsService (don't use)
VoiceDialer (again, no mic)
Hope that helps, and I've had no issues so far! Also, I would rename Phone.apk last, since you have to do a hard shutdown.
Edit: obviously, all these are .apk, I just didnt feel like writing it that many times Also, it shouldn't matter what you rename them to, as long as they aren't .apk anymore. I rename as .apk.bak.

Thanks for the list. I got some stuff to rename and most of them seem pretty obvious.
As to the Phone Idle and Cell Standby, they're still showing after 3 reboots. I'm thinking they're going to still show there for a while because both of them show like 3hr xx min of 'Time On' and the percentage has dropped a couple. I'm not sure where else to see if they're actively in use - they shouldn't be, I renamed and it stuck just like all the rest that no longer show up.
last i heard that while most might think it a worthwhile exercise to rename the files, there is no proof it actually improved battery life

Not as easy as you might think. The OS appears to be reporting legitimate tablet usage using these labels. There is no phone radio to consume battery.

Thank you, Seth, - are you saying that phone.apk does need to be renamed because Titanium backup will not freeze it ?
I used root explorer and renamed phone.apk. I got continual force close notifications so I had to do a hard shutdown. It came back on and I went back to root explorer and phone.apk was back as normal.Phone.apk doesn't even show up in titanium backup.
Second time trying to rename and reboot and it stuck.

Titanium backup or use es file manager with root access checked off in settings and delete them or any file manager that has root access really but you shouldn't delete them..just move them to a folder on your sd card or rename them to .bak or freeze them with titanium backup..this way if anything goes wrong you will be able to fix it
Hope I helped

I remove the video editing app without any problems.
EDIT: I froze all the "authenticator" apps without a problem.

Im not so sure about removing anything blur or moto related. It was said that com.motorola.android.buacontactadapter was removed, but does anyone know what it does? The main thing I dislike the most is the way the camera handles flash and the way it is linked to gallery. (I hate the moto gallery, QuickPic FTW). If camera360 supported FFCs I would be much more likely to use it.

Also - word of warning - do not remove VSuiteApp.apk - I thought it was the VCast Media Manager, but removing it puts the phone into a "Force close" loop, which even ADB can't get you out of (can't SU while in the "force close" loop). I had to reboot the phone to get it working again and restore the APK file to its correct location, which was a pretty tense experience.

I removed the VSuiteApp.apk just fine. No issues here. the force close loop is caused because the application was running at the time of deletion. VCast Media Manager is known as NewBayVault_4.2.99.36.Market.apk . this can happen to any of the apps if they are system apps that are running during time of deletion
@Darksurf -thanks for that, VCast media manager now removed.
Edited my earlier post to add that APK to the list.
On removing VSuiteApp.apk - what does that app do? It seems to be related to the voice recognition system as far as I can see. Be safe to remove if you don't want voice IO, perhaps?
I removed the DLNA app, it started giving immediate problems with repetitive force close notices. Pulled the battery, restarted, never happened again.
So I used Root Explorer to rename most of the same apps everyone is listing as .bak. I then gave my phone a few hours run to see how everything behaved and that I didn't freeze anything important. Once I was satisfied with that I started actually deleting certain apps (ie. blockbuster, zumo, any vzw app) because all we kept saying was "remove the bloatware." Now I'm seeing everyone say we shouldn't have actually removed anything. All that being said, how can I replace the apps I actually deleted and simply go back and .bak them?
Can I delete GlobalNWSwitch.apk? Is this what makes the phone keep on asking whether you want to switch back to Global mode once the signal is lost for a while?
The application is there, but no way to access it

someone should really explain this
Same issue on my Verizon S6. I feel dumb that I have spent 30 minutes trying to access this app.
Same here. Why cant we do download booster as well? Carrier killing a good phone.
Found it. You have to put the usage manager widget on the home screen then click on battery and it will take you to the usage manager.
The usage manager is not the same thing as the smart manager.
360 security app from playstore does the same thing.
hmmm I see that the app is on the phone, maybe someone can tell us how to unhide an app as it seems to of been Hidden rather than removed for some reason by Verizon and ATT.
ooooh, I think I see why ATT and Verizon Hid this app. It is installed at Ring 0 , Same level as Knox. Hmmm wonder if we found our Exploit Point of access for Root.
What do you mean it's installed at Ring 0? How can you see that information?

This is more a windows referance but a program that operates at ring 0 has full operation permissions that allow it to modify read/right code that effects base operation of the device. In otherwords Root access without user permission. If you open up the Application manager, Settings>systems>Storage>used space>Applications. Then scroll Down and press on the app it shows you the App info, usually used to Force stop or Unistall manually as you'll notice most Bloatware Unistall command is greyed out and doesn't work.
But anyways if you scroll down, It'll show you Permissions the App has and is allowed to do, and a nice little note by Samsung telling you this app works at administration level at the same level as Knox and a reason being so it doesn't use a lot of memory. Basically the Smart Manager App has Permissions to pretty much do everything on the phone.
Ps. Looking over the apps I decided to look at Usage Manager the app that att seems to have replaced it with. and it has no where near the Permission level that Smart Manager has. So it seems ATT did not like that app and used theres instead. with them Bootloader locking and Root locking the Device, I Wonder why.
I was looking at the feature.XML and there is a thing in there that has disable smart manager/ disable anti malware set to true...of course without root we can't change that line to see if that bring access to it back

Edit: not sure if pictures posted, but using root explorer, I can view the main folder and almost all system folders. In system/app there are quite a few apps that have permissions like smart manager. I was surprised to see the permissions on the kiosk app.

yah its really mind boggling the permisions these simple apps have. guess when something is installed at root level in factory they just give em all permissions and hit next.
Can USB debugging be used to maybe change one of these apps and push it back? I figure you can't because it's r/o, but there are a lot of other high level folders that are r/w

If you debloated via ADB AppControl (https://adbappcontrol.com/en/) then it should be as easy as going into the "disabled" or "removed" tab and then restoring the app.
The alternative solution would be to run the reverse debloat script (credit to @raimondomartire for original script.
I edited it so it only restores the V-Appstore)

No change, accubattery is still set to high battery use, it's locked in the recent apps drawer and Autostart etc. Enabled.
But Autostart never worked for it. On reboot I always have to start it manually and never close the window in the recent apps otherwise I know Vivo kills it. It's really a pain seeing how unreliable those settings are. And I don't ever use power saving mode or dark mode....
Seeing it was killed several times according to the message is even more strange

What about the vivo.pem thingy? Did you remove it?
Yes of course. All other apps I added to Autostart and high battery use seem to be fine, at least for notifications. Because muted group chats on Line and Signal clearly need to download if not actually open before. So they seem to be somehow affected too. Note that this doesn't apply to non muted individual chats or non muted group chats.
I read somewhere that the bug with dark mode is triggered by muted group chats. Maybe this has system wide implications? That's what I hate here, bugs are kinda always depending on super strange combinations which don't seem to make sense in first place (more like some vivo engineer thought he can save some battery here or there without noticing to breaking a lot of functions. Clearly missing quality control between Teams or individuals working on the software)...
And again as long as an app is open in recent Apps app drawer its not affected.
Could it be that those users that aren't affected are using a third party app drawer for recent apps? If you do that than maybe the results will be way different (same as not having muted group chats).

If you can't install APKs, go to settings > Apps > package installer. On package installer clear cache, clear dat, force stop & uninstall updates. You can then install APKs again

The notifications works as expected, I just disabled AOD, and installed Muviz Edge to use AOD

Settings, apps& permissions --> apps manager --> there is no app with package in Name...
And accubattery got killed again... See zero battery usage and I had charged it to 100%... I really wonder if anyone gets equal hours here to actual phone use...
Accubattery is secured with the lock symbol yet if I swipe it up it gets killed. Adguard as a service works perfectly however. Accubattery cannot seem to get running as plain service however while storing usage data. The lockdown only changes that if you click on the X at the bottom the locked apps aren't killed.
Hmm, removing it from Autostart and reading it seems to have helped on reboots. But something seriously is wrong with this system if so often (notifications too) adding and removing an app from the lists changes something.

There is definitely a app called package installed installer, it's on every android device. Unless you've debloated it
Yes there is but I cannot open it. I can delete it's data/cache however which doesn't change anything.
It's only a service not an app itself it seems to me. And as it's a service only it cannot be managed through apps and permissions. It can be found by searching for it from settings search field

That's strange . I had same apk installation issues as, and I was able to uninstall updates for this package installer, cleared data and cache, and then apks installation worked without issues
