How can I remove Phone and cell from NC - Nook Color General

Running CM7.0.3 from SD card. When I go to applications battery use I see cell standby and phone idle using major battery resources. As the NC isn't used as a phone is their anyway to remove these apps that are running or at least shut them down?

Something I've been doing for a while is using Root Explorer (well worth the money) to rename any of the system apps I don't want, mostly having to do with phone stuff (I.e. rename Phone.apk to Phone.apk.bak) which disables that until I rename it back to .apk. now there's no cell standby or phone idle in battery usage! You can also rename things like Telephonyservice.apk and Voicedialer.apk. all these can be found under system/app. Hope that helps!
Edit: Oh, and when you rename Phone.apk it'll go into a force close loop until you reboot. Just hold down the power button till it turns off, then turn it back on, and you'll be good to go!

If I purchase root explorer and use market to download will I lose this app and need to repurchase it if I decide to completely start fresh like I just did with CM7.0.3. I had to download all my apps again from market. They were free apps so not a big deal.
Is it possible to save a purchased app and use again?

Your purchased apps should be tied to your market (google) account and are therefore saved there and not on the device itself. If I understood what you were asking.

Yep, if you purchase an app, it will always be saved in "my apps" for easy redownload, no matter what rom you're running.

Theres been much discussion, there are 2 schools of thought, but many believe disabling or deleting these apk's do not effect battery usage at all. (make sure you dont delete them just rename them to .old)

I have a question about this (as I have yet to try it out myself). If I rename these files, do I have to do it again each time I install a new rom (or flash an update of a rom)?

Should be easy to tell just go to applications/battery usage and see if cell and phone are consuming, if they are then something is still active even if the apps are not available.

A better option is to Install Titanium Backup(Which you should have anyway) and then find the Phone Apps and "Freeze" them. Much better idea then Renaming.

You can do that with most of the apps, but NOT with Phone.apk, the main one responsible for "cell standby". For me it does take away cell standby and phone idle from battery usage.
And yes, sadly you do have to redo it when installing a new rom, since it reinstalls the system apps.

So anyone have a good list of known Apps that can be renamed/frozen that won't impact tablet performance and *could* potentially lead to better battery life?
Oh and I renamed the apps you (Seth) listed on the first page but Phone Idle and Cell Standby still show in the Battery Usage display. Is this just because they were there and in use in the past and will eventually fall off? I renamed these apps to *.old

Yeah, you'll probably see those still listed in battery use till you shutdown, I think. Then they should be gone.
Here are all the apps I rename, and why:
Booksphone.apk (I use aldiko)
Browser (I use DolphinHD)
Camera (obvious )
CarHomeGoogle (no idea what this even is)
Email (use gmail)
FileManager (use Astro or Root Explorer)
Gallery3D (use quickpic)
MMS (no use for me)
Music (use audiogalaxy, soon to be Music Beta )
Phone (should clear up "cell standby") )
PicoTts (I don't use TTS ever)
Protips (No use now)
SoundRecorder (No mic )
Talk (don't use it)
TelephonyProvider (no use, may also be a cause of "cell standby" or "phone idle")
TtsService (don't use)
VoiceDialer (again, no mic)
Hope that helps, and I've had no issues so far! Also, I would rename Phone.apk last, since you have to do a hard shutdown.
Edit: obviously, all these are .apk, I just didnt feel like writing it that many times Also, it shouldn't matter what you rename them to, as long as they aren't .apk anymore. I rename as .apk.bak.

Thanks for the list. I got some stuff to rename and most of them seem pretty obvious.
As to the Phone Idle and Cell Standby, they're still showing after 3 reboots. I'm thinking they're going to still show there for a while because both of them show like 3hr xx min of 'Time On' and the percentage has dropped a couple. I'm not sure where else to see if they're actively in use - they shouldn't be, I renamed and it stuck just like all the rest that no longer show up.

last i heard that while most might think it a worthwhile exercise to rename the files, there is no proof it actually improved battery life

Hmm, come to think of it, they were there till I installed a new rom. They should go away over time though, sorry for that misinformation! I had just thought a reboot would solve it.

Not as easy as you might think. The OS appears to be reporting legitimate tablet usage using these labels. There is no phone radio to consume battery.

Thank you, Seth, - are you saying that phone.apk does need to be renamed because Titanium backup will not freeze it ?

I used root explorer and renamed phone.apk. I got continual force close notifications so I had to do a hard shutdown. It came back on and I went back to root explorer and phone.apk was back as normal.Phone.apk doesn't even show up in titanium backup.
Second time trying to rename and reboot and it stuck.

100% awake time

Any fix? Search brought nothing. Using aloysius 2.1 but it stays the same on any rom i go to. No jit or oc
Just for the sake of trying, go into DConfig, click the banned apps button, uncheck Sense, save twice and allow the phone to reboot. I know that running JIT w/Sense banned will run 100% awake, but let's give it a shot anyway.
DConfig in aloysius?
yeah, it's in at least some of the 2.1 builds. I know it causes awake time issues when banning Sense. Some reported the issue when not running JIT, so I figure it's worth a shot.
Dont c what you're talking about
Only other thing I can think of right now is Live Wallpapers. Do you use them? If so, try switching to a static and see what that does. Beyond that, I am not sure right now.
if you don't have spare parts, go to market and download, or use *#*#4636#*#* to check battery use, you can find the app keeping it awake and uninstall or kill it. For me, it was beautiful widgets, which I'm not using anyway right now, so I uninstalled. Also, check settings/accounts and sync. Look under google, and see if one is way behind the others in last sync time. Me, again, I keep finding picasa us stuck, so I just unchecked it to never sync.

That's the thing... I use spareparts... and it's just showing 100% awake but no app running.... I've tried everything and the last 4+ roms show 100% awake time for me... Strange
How about time without signal? And under battery use in spare parts, anything significantly higher under cpu or network use?

With stock 2.1, I was seeing the issue with Facebook for HTC Sense. As soon as I took the account out, it was fixed. Don't know if that's an issue on any custom ROMs...I haven't seen it on any of the ROMs I've run except for the stock 2.1 zip that Damage put out.
that 0 app is what's doing it, and it's that com.htc.bg I believe, meaning syncing with facebook, calendar, friendstream, etc. you should go into accounts and sync in settings, turning one thing off at a time (also look in google, calendar, picasa, etc. there) till you find what turns it off. Then we'll see if we can find out why/fix it, or just disable it permanently if you don't care

Awesome i think its facebook cause it does it on all my roms
Turned off all sync still at 100
Try pulling the facebook app to back it up then delete it (htcfacebook.apk) and see if it stops. It's not controlled by the sync settings

Didnt work and for some reason didn't save now I need the apk lol
I dont understand the awake issue but I have it too. But mine is weird.
No matter which ROM I use my awake time is fine for the first couple of days. Then, for no apparent reason, it shoots to 100% and stays there. I backup my ROMS as soon as I set them up the way I want them and restore every couple of days. Sometimes I can go 3 or 4 days with great awake time before it all goes to hell lol
you can pull the apk from the original rom zip file, then push back. Can you try with a fresh install and no apps installed? I think we've about eliminated what comes installed...

I already pulled the apk... the only left to do is install another rom but as i said, any rom i install automatically goes to 100% awake... no effect on battery life but its just annoying lol... well at least it doesnt appear to affect battery life but im used to only about 6-8 hours before im at 10% under heavy usage.

[Q] Do you suffer from Gallery Sensor battery drainage?

After using the gallery app and leaving the phone for a while, check the battery usage of the sensors by typing in *#*#4636#*#* in the dialer. Choose sensor usage and since last unplugged. See if the Gallery is in the list and see what time usage it has taken.
If the time is close to the time since you last used the Gallery then the sensor is unnecessary draining the battery.
WE NEED TO FLOOD SAMSUNG WITH TWEETS AND FACEBOOK MESSAGES WITH THIS PROBLEM! IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!!!
I Get this - Official Froyo JPO - UK CPW Unlocked I9000- CF Root, Voodoo lagfix
Using Just pictures instead, but annoying to say the least as i causes huge battery drain.
yes it happen to me too after upgrade tu JPO..........i really have no idea how to solve it and hope someone come with the solution ASAP!!!!! but hope Samsung will be the first.....my gallery usage is the same time with my phone time after the last charging eventhough i rarely or never use the gallery....!!!! so annoying that need to charge it everyday!!!!
deleting your gallery.apk and replacing it with the latest update from the market fixes it.
How to delete the gallery.apk can be found here on the forums.
Yes! this is crap. Without gallery running I get virtually 0 drainage in standby mode and with gallery on I'm losing about 4-5%/hr =|. I'm wondering if changing the gallery apk will help here...
thanx...but by deleting the gallery will i get a new gallery from the market with beautifull 3D interface like this one? but if it the only way....i got no choice right!!! my battery life is more important...hmmm

I think you can stop the bug by clearing the ram using the built in task manager and using a level 2 clear memory. I think it's working for me.

does it give a big change after you did it or equal to the Eclair battery life????..and what is the time for your gallery usage after that???
Anybody come up with a solution for this?
Last night I reboot the phone and didn't use the standard gallery for 8 hours and guess what. The gallery drainage stopped. So I am looking for the other apps to replace the standard one.
I removed the Gallery3d.apk and .odex from the system/app folder.
I then rebooted and installed the Gallery 3D app from the market.
Now when I check the sensor battery usage, the gallery time seems to be about the same time I have actually been in the app. So so far, the problem seems solved.
This is a bit annoying especially since the gallery was one of the first things i used just after upgrading to this ROM. Not sure i like the idea of having to delete the bloody app just to get decent usage!

At least with a quick use I didn't find the market app any different, except it is in English and not in Finnish like I have set my phone.
Just make a backup of the original files and it's safe.

Apps that are safe to disable?

I was playing around with my nook last night, disabling apps i dont really need. The following is a list of apps i disabled and any ill effects i found. I take no responsibility if you disable one of these apps and your nook no longer boots.
Calendar.apk.bak
CalendarProvider.apk
Email.apk
GenieWidget.apk
Music.apk
NetworkLocation.apk
Phone.apk
PicoTts.apk
Social.apk
TelephonyProvider.apk
TtsService.apk
VpnServices.apk
one thing i did find that you cannot disable is ContactsProvider.apk When you disable this, you will no longer be able to download apps from the market. They looks like they are going to download, but they never do.
So Far, everything seems to work fine. not really sure if i gain more performance or battery from disabling these apps or not.
If any one has any insight as to why i should not disable some of the apk's i have please let me know.
Ive also disabled those same apps, and also all of the bn stock stuff: adobe air, affiledownoadservice, authenticationsvc, certificate installer, checkin service, everything named com.bn* ,cloud service, drp reader, drm protected storage, library and reader.
No issues, aside from the bn stuff of course not working.
I used titanium to freeze em, didnt delete the apks(mostly)

Keeps unwanted apps from running which chews up ram. Less tasks to have to worry about managing. I don't think it affects battery life so much as it enhances performance.

The main reason i disable them is for performance. It really bothers me when i check a task manager, and find apps im not using running in the backround eating up memory and possibly battery. Unfortunately i dont really have any good way to gauge if disabling these apps increases battery life and/or performance. I know disabling alot of these apps really sped up my android based phone. i can only assume i can get the same from disabling them on the nook.

Prevent apps like Facebook from automatically running

I'be had fairly poor battery performance. When i went into running services i saw that quite a few were running that i didn't start up myself. Like Facebook. Tripit, hootsuite. I've made sure that notifications have been turned off but these apps are still loading up. Any way of making sure they don't load unless i manually load them?

I've been using watchdog. It lets me know when an app is running in the background and lets me kill it. If there's an automatic solution, I'd like to know about it too.

Agreed, task killers... kill batteries.
Honestly, having it run in the background doesn't kill your battery. Its the syncing. I'm assuming you are NOT rooted? If so, then there are a number of apps to help you, primarily Titanium Backup so you can FREEZE the app.
If you want to have a quick free fix, go under accounts, and turn off sync for those apps. Saves battery life like you wouldn't believe.
There's also an app called "LTE Switch" that brings you to the LTE Menu so you can switch to CDMA (Also a HUGE battery saver)
Good luck!
I am rooted and running UNL3ASH3D V2.0. And yes I understand it's the syncing that kills the battery. I've turned off syncing on these apps but they're still loading which makes me think they are still using at least some battery. None of these programs (like Facebook) are listed in Accounts.

None are showing under Accounts? Hmm, thats odd. Usually, when you first get your phone, it asks to set these up. What all apps start up upon reboot? And you are NOT rooted, correct? I'll do some research
I'm not using the Social Networking app. Standalone versions of Facebook, Hoot Suite, etc.
What I'm using is a program that is a part of my file explorer, ES Task Manager. Instead of KILLING the apps, I can force them at startup to not run. So I stopped Gun Bros and Contract Killer from running at startup because they had these annoying notifications they would send me about buying in-game stuff and really didn't need to be run at all. And I couldn't find a way to turn them off lol, so this works out well for me. If you don't want something running at startup, you can do it this way, and it could potentially help battery life because it would only run when you tell it to. And you need root access to do this.
Great suggestion

Look for program called "Startup Manager" in market - works great!
hello...i used a auto start manager, works great..but i also want that when i close facebook from recent app that it kills the process...in rom tools task manager i see that facebook is a hidden app (like whatsapp) so the built-in task manager doesn't kill it when i close the app..any ideas how to make the facebook app "visible" so that the task manager auto kills it like other apps and games?

*backup* (Android System) - eating up my battery; what is it?

Check out the attached screen shot. That's from Better Battery Stats. Whatever it is, it's eating up my battery. Battery life has been half what it used to be. Any idea what *backup* is and how to keep it from running all the time?
Also, I installed Nitrodesk Touchdown and used it for email on my exchange account for awhile, but it didn't improve the email delay issue so I reduced it from push email to polling once every 24 hrs., but it's still running a lot. Any idea how to reduce that?

Luckily I automatically unchecked that when I set up the account. I mean, seriously, rely on their security? What kind of security plan is that for anyone to adopt?

edit: both options were checked for me. i unchecked it immediately. any other such hidden settings i might have missed? hope the battery life increases now.
Once you uncheck first option, other will disable automatically. B'coz if it dont backup your data, there is no question to restore it.
With this unchecking you wont lose anything right now. it is for next use, In case of you hard reset, it will restore some data automatically, in case of you have enable it.
But better you can use titanium backup or mybackup pro to do this n make schedule to backup at desired time. It won't kill your battery by sync all the time.
I never enable this function.
Had this same problem with my S3, unchecked the boxes after reading this. Is the something we can freeze in Titanium backup aswell? All i can see is /system/app/backuprestoreconfirmation
out of 7 hours on time it kept my phone awake for 5 of them! its mental.
Just unchecked the backup option. Note that google doesn't back up you phone constantly, it only happens a few times a month.
But why take chances?
Does this option interfere with the contact back-up from my gmail adress ?
These wakelocks are a major issue in all androids...
I had these wakelocks with my Motorola Milestone (because of WiFi, GPS, ...) and now on the Note with several ROMs. It should not be so easy for a userspace app to raise such a lock ... maybe some developer can write an app that notifies the user if the device does not sleep? And, even better, ask for killing and deinstalling the misbehaving app, if possible, even from the market...

There is an app already for that.. I'm not sure if it had been suggested already before but it is called CpuSPy (look for it in google play). What the app simply do is to monitor in the background and constantly you can tap on it and see if your phone is in a very deep sleep or not (it has a bar to determine how much or how little your phone goes into deep sleep). Also you can try to install Betterbatterystat(also from google play) to see which app or apps are causing the wakelocks on your phone. After you've verified those 'misbehaving app/s', then that'll be the time you can uninstall /remove it for yourself. Killing it won't do any good at all, because the moment you restart your phone, the said process/app would simply start back again as well. You need to really uninstall it thru Titanium backup.
On the side note. I don't think there will ever be an app that you can automate to uninstall any 'misbehaving apps' in your phone as Google generally has laws on it, governing some stance that says something to the effect as "no apps can be allowed to violate or remove other apps on the phone automatically". It would still be the user's discretion to manually uninstall those rogue apps by himself on his phone.
Hope that helps a bit.
Cheers!
What does the "data" mean here? Like Titan Backup?
But every time I flashed a new ROM, it seems like I still need to retype my WIFI password and no app data was restored
