Stuck in a boot loop.... no recovery/download mode - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all, just got my Captivate 2 weeks ago and successfully rooted and flashed with custom ROM following the directions on all the posts here. Last night, while attempting to switch from Paragon 3.0 to Phoenix 4.0, installation was aborted. After several unsuccessful recovery attempts through CWM, I finally followed directions and used Odin-one-click. Odin did its thing and phone rebooted immediately and got stuck in a loop.
ATT screen flashes on and off when phone is powered on. When plugged into PC, phone flashes empty battery and computer does not see the phone. I've tried just about every button combination I've come across and about every permutation of button/battery/USB/Odin combination on the PC to no avail.
Is my last resort the USB jig? Or are there other options? Any and all help would be appreciated. And thank you to all of you whose posts I used to get me this far.
Patiently awaiting any assistance......

If you can't get into dl mode a jig will be needed
Have you used odin before?
Do you know your build number

Build number.... inside of the phone I see 1010, REV 0.4
Is that what you were referring to?

Yes and that is what caused your odin problem

Go to radio shack get a package of 100 k ohm resisters. Three twisted together in a tear drop shape. Touch the ends to the last 2 potions prongs closest to the head set jack. I have done this, it works.

Just in case this is how I enter dl mode
Take out sim, ext sd, and bat. In your case leave the bat out for like 10 minutes.
Put bat back in
Hold vol up and down
While holding plug in usb

Not sure if this is how you got into this situation in the first place, but did you disable the lagfix before flashing? If not, it may be what caused this.

Did I disable the lagfix? I believe I did, I at least was cognizant of having to disable the lagfix, but it certainly is a possibility. Thanks for chiming in, appreciate all of it.

Wait until the AT&T logo flashes by 2 -3 times before releasing the power button...........works for me.
Did you search as well.........? There are tons of post discussing this.
This post also belongs in Q&A, not Android Development.
oh okay thank you. I am trying this now.
if not just try using the one click odin to flash back to stock just need to put into download mode( with the usb cable already connected to pc, hold vol up and down, then plug in the cable while holding vol buttons)
Read the five million posts on how to recover. There are tutorials and the wiki.
Do a search and bottom line is your phone isn't bricked.

Don't worry at all mate, I just bought the captivate today as well.
Mine's all fixed.
Hello,
I installed Android 2.2 FROYO on my Samsung Captivate, Then z4root ( temporary root). Then installed OCLF 2.0. OCLF restarted my device now there's a black screen and it vibrates every 30 seconds or so...
EDIT: Reinstalling 2.2 via ODIN3 allowed me to get my device back! What did I do wrong, in the oclf 2.0 step? Still interested in installing that TIA
EDIT NUMBER 2: Must have had apps installed on my SD card. If you don't move everything off of your SD card ( Setting/application/manage apps/sd card) and onto your phone. You will get a "loop" @ boot.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So. Use OCLF 2.0 to reinstall froyo. then use Superoneclick to root/allow non-market apps. Then apply the lagfix
Hope this helps
i let the at&t screen come up 2 times and 3 times. It didnt work. Im about to try the ordin way. Thanks so much guys, i was scared! I still kinda am but im not givin' up!!

This doesn't belong in Development.
when your in download mode you then run ODIN and hit start. It should reflash back to Stock. after it completely restarts you should use the master clear to wipe your phone(dont have to). Once this is finished your going to have to root your device again.

You're supposed to have the Odin One-Click on your PC (google "odin one click JF6," you'll find it), and have that running beforehand. Then boot into download mode, and plug it into your computer. In the Odin One-Click it should recognize your phone and say "COM4" or something like that. Click start, and it will reflash your phone to stock, and it'll boot automatically when done flashing.

you may have to build a jig or buy one online, but first, make sure you understand what is download mode and how to flash back to stock rom before you do any fixes.

I know,Another Bricked Phone...sigh

I had loaded the ginger clone rom and all was well. I then however wanted to swap kernels so i loaded up seitrons cwm 1.5.6 and proceeded to flash through cwm. this has now become the worst day of my life. the phone will not boot past the galaxy s screen. i cannot not get into recovery and both computers now say usb device not recognized when in download trying to flash odin. i am worried that something is corrupted on my phone because not matter how many times i uninstall and reinstall the drivers no luck. i think it is officially bricked and im sol. maybe some great minds can figure it out here.
It's not bricked - issue is trying to get your computer to recognize your phone when in download mode so you can flash it back.
What OS are you running? Also - where did you download the drivers from? Some seem to work better than others.
If you can get to the galaxy screen you might still be able to to get into recovery. pull out the battery and use the 3 button combo. Hold down both volume button then power and let go of the power button after it turns on. then just reinstall the rom
I'm willing to bet you can also get into Download Mode either with button combos, or a JIG. Once in Download, you can use Odin to restore to JF6, and have a working phone to flash around with again.
i can get into download mode no problem. and i think it is quite possible drivers are corrupted on the phone itself. my wifes phone works on the same exact setup. no usb device not recognized error. i have tried the drivers from here and samsung directly with no luck. 3 button combo does not work. sim out sim in battery out and in. but like i said it will just not register with the comp and hers will. so im going to att and seeing about replacing it. but i will see how that goes. ive done this lots of times with no issues ever.
download works
3 button combo does not so no recovery
usb device not recognized error
thanks for the help and keep it coming i will try everything if i haven't already.
Try current usb port

Think I'm in worse shape. Tried flashing just the kernel to get BLN working again (last ROM I put on somehow loaded a non-compatible kernel). Now the phone boots the white ATT screen and just sits there. Can't get it into D/L mode with 3-button and doesn't respond to computer I have been using to flash ROMs for a couple weeks now...
Am I hosed? ANY help would be greatly appreciated...
You could try to use a JIG to force your phone into Download Mode
Okay...well, got into D/L mode finally. Used Odin to get it back to factory. Used the One Click rooter again, except now it boots to recovery 3e, which doesn't let my power button work as the okay button Pulling the battery to reset it, but it will no longer go into D/L mode to use Odin again. It keeps booting to the recovery Utils, which I cant get out of...*sigh*
Thoughts?
at least your able to do something i still cannot get my phone into recovery or to be recognized by the computer. it is not the drivers so i have no idea. i can only think that something got funked up with the kernel flash.
if you are getting into 3e recovery then you are most certainly NOT using the JF6 one click stock
3e recovery comes on JI6 which is the FroYo leak....completely different builds and roms
have you tried a different usb cable? I was having this problem, and the stock samsung cable was B.O. and wasnt working... i tried my blackberry one and all was good

I just want to quote this to stress the importance.
Thank you, didn't realize that (still sorta new to this)...
I downloaded a zip (I thought from here somewhere) that extracted into the 4 files. Anyone got a link to the JH6 set of files?
I also downloaded DG's "One Click Odin", but it doesn't seem to really do anything when I run it unless I manually load all the files. Also, I don't see a "Master Clean" like the post refer too
are you sure you downloaded the right odin? in the one click version, theres no option to load files at all. only a "start" and "master clear"
make sure the odin one click is open before you connect your phone.

[Q] Captivate Boot Loop after Odin one click

Hello all and thx in advance.
ATT Captivate batch 1010
I had Cognition 2.3 I think on my phone and it worked great however I wanted to try a different ROM so I attempted to restore my phone to stock using ODIN one click. I realized after that that I never disabled the voodoo lag fix or deleted my user data.
Now I am stuck in a boot loop that either shows the white ATT logo screen flashing every couple seconds or the phone off charge screen re starting every couple seconds.
I bought a USB Jig and it works great so I can get into D/L mode easily but I have tried flashing the stock firmware at least 6 times now using different machines, different ports, different versions of ODIN and I've searched around these forums and others for several hours trying to find a solution. It seems that I needed to erase my user data in recovery mode and removed the lag fix before I did this but it is what it is. I have tried to get to recovery mode to no avail. All I can get to is download mode.
Any ideas on what I should/can do?
any help will be greatly appreciated.

please help, i have the same problem, was flashing back to stock from a serendipit 5.12 so that i could get the 6.0 version... all went as planned until odin said "reset" which was my cue to unplug and that the process was complete.... i unplugged the phone and tried to reboot and now it does exactly as the first post described, at&t logo then black screen, then back to the at&t logo then black screen again... my computer doesnt recognize my phone none of the methods of getting to download screen will work... no matter how many times i pull the sd, sim, and batt, no matter the button combination i use or which order i use them in.... same result... i cant afford a new phone i need help, i will donate also... i knew this stuff was over my head, but "curiosity killed the cat" i guess...
I had the exact same problem. Try this method, it's the one that worked for me when all others failed... But remember to follow it EXACTLY.
1. Pull out the battery.
2. Hold Volume UP+DOWN (Don't let go of them until you see the download screen).
3. Stick in the USB (which is connected to the computer).
4. Put the battery back in.
If not, you might need to get a USB Jig.
That Froyo Odin link worked!
Thanks guys I flashed to Froyo and it worked!
I've since flashed clockwork recovery and gotten Serendipity 6.1
As far as getting into download mode I had to use one of the USB jigs.
I ordered one from the guy who does the rom reviews but you could make one as well.
On another note the new ROM seems to be discharging my battery really fast
Before I start investigating it as a problem I am going to charge it completely then let it discharge completely to calibrate it.
Thanks again guys
Rob
I just fixed mine last night, I had the exact same problem because of the exact same upgrade. What you need to do is get or make a usb jig. There's a couple resources around here for how to do it.
Here's a video showing how to make one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rdn5GoRjhn0
Once I got my phone into download mode, I used Darky's ROM Resurrection Edition ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940671 ) to restore my phone. Just scroll down to where it says "Files Needed" and download the Captivate version. Once you have that downloaded, use the jig to put your phone into download mode and follow the directions in the Darky's video (jump to about 2:30 into the video). Once I had my phone booting, I used clockwork to install Serendipity 6.
Hope that helps you as much as it helped me!!
went to radio shack, got all the stuff to make a jig and i was able to get my phone into download mode! now to try darko...... thanks everyone!
odin doesnt reconize phone
which odin3 are you using? 1.7? or the one click to stock?
you mentioned you had the bootloop problem before, so you should be using odin 1.7 with 2.2 stock.
open odin
get phone into download mode with your nice jig
unplug jig and plug in computer
box in odin should turn yellow.
And make sure you have the correct drivers installed. CRUCIAL.

If one-clicks aren't working, you might need to grab the full version of Heimdall or Odin and flash a full package. Some of the newer phone builds don't like one-clicks.

[Q] I just need some quick help (I hope?)

Hello all, I admire all of your work. I just recently hit a problem and was wondering if you could help.
I had unofficial froyo from designgears, and was trying to install voodoo lagfix. I set it as an update.zip, it ran through the whole set-up with the talking lady and everything. It said it was complete, then it rebooted into my recovery (2e, but I just recently flashed 3e, so I don't know why that happened).
Then, it was doing it's thing, but got stuck on "Installing multi-csc". I let that sit for about 5 minutes, but nothing happened, so I hit reboot now. It rebooted back into 2e recover, and again got stuck on "Installing multi-csc".
I tried turning it off, then opening odin3 and trying to get into download mode, but everytime I plugged it in, it went to recovery.
Now, I took the battery out and SIM card and tried plugging it back in, and it gets stuck on the charging screen that shows when it is turned off. It won't even load how charged the battery is...I have no idea what to do...
You should still be able to get into download mode with this method- Remove battery and sim for 1 minute then only put the battery back in connect your charging cable only to your phone then while holding the volume up and down plug it into your computer while the phone is off and it should go right into DL mode
Edit: I forgot to add that you must have Odin already open for this to work properly
Thank God for you, my good sir! This will change the kernel back to stock as well, correct?

Haha no problem this method has worked for without fail many times and yes it will if you are using Odin one click but your phone must be build 1009(This is more of a guide line people above 1009 have successfully used it I believe) or below

[Q] Stuck in boot screen

I was running CM7 nightly builds. I was attempting to switch to the stable CM7 build with an ODIN restore. I couldn't get ODIN to recognize my phone, and a forum thread said to try re-installing the update.zip file from the recovery boot. It got hung up trying to do that and upon reboot, it is now stuck on the startup screen. Can't get to recovery, can't do anything. Any thoughts?
Help is GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks!
have you pulled battery and started again? tried button combos? have you used odin since installing cm7? i believe it needs different drivers..... more info will get you more help. more reading will keep you out of trouble (mostly) i've never used cm7 so i can't help that much...
I have tried pulling the battery, running the battery to dead and then putting it on the charger, all the button combos.
I have not tried ODIN but thats because ODIN needs to be in download mode and I cant get into download mode. The only thing I can get to is the AT&T World Phone screen with the white background. I have done some google searching about getting stuck on the boot screen but none of the threads I have found have seemed to mot relate to my exact problem. I am currently looking into if this is the kind of problem that a jig would fix.
definitely sounds like a job for a jig.. it will force it into d/l mode as long as the bootloaders are not corrupted..... best of luck
if the bootloaders are corrupted, is there anything to do or is the phone just finished?
Jtag/unbrickable mod
I had the same loop yesterday doing something else, but i had the ATT boot loop and no button combos worked to get into DL mode. So I tried pulling the battery, then holding vol+/vol-, putting battery back in, and then plugging in usb cable. Went to DL mode. If that doesn't work, I'm sure a jig would.

Jtag should only be used for hard bricked phones. Since there is a sign of life, he can probably recover from this without the need of jtag.
Use a jig. It's the easiest way to get into dl mode. If you don't have one, you can make a crude one that will work until you can get a proper one ordered.
