Hello all and thx in advance.
ATT Captivate batch 1010
I had Cognition 2.3 I think on my phone and it worked great however I wanted to try a different ROM so I attempted to restore my phone to stock using ODIN one click. I realized after that that I never disabled the voodoo lag fix or deleted my user data.
Now I am stuck in a boot loop that either shows the white ATT logo screen flashing every couple seconds or the phone off charge screen re starting every couple seconds.
I bought a USB Jig and it works great so I can get into D/L mode easily but I have tried flashing the stock firmware at least 6 times now using different machines, different ports, different versions of ODIN and I've searched around these forums and others for several hours trying to find a solution. It seems that I needed to erase my user data in recovery mode and removed the lag fix before I did this but it is what it is. I have tried to get to recovery mode to no avail. All I can get to is download mode.
Any ideas on what I should/can do?
any help will be greatly appreciated.

I think that you may need to use the Froyo Odin (JI6).

please help, i have the same problem, was flashing back to stock from a serendipit 5.12 so that i could get the 6.0 version... all went as planned until odin said "reset" which was my cue to unplug and that the process was complete.... i unplugged the phone and tried to reboot and now it does exactly as the first post described, at&t logo then black screen, then back to the at&t logo then black screen again... my computer doesnt recognize my phone none of the methods of getting to download screen will work... no matter how many times i pull the sd, sim, and batt, no matter the button combination i use or which order i use them in.... same result... i cant afford a new phone i need help, i will donate also... i knew this stuff was over my head, but "curiosity killed the cat" i guess...
I had the exact same problem. Try this method, it's the one that worked for me when all others failed... But remember to follow it EXACTLY.
1. Pull out the battery.
2. Hold Volume UP+DOWN (Don't let go of them until you see the download screen).
3. Stick in the USB (which is connected to the computer).
4. Put the battery back in.
If not, you might need to get a USB Jig.
That Froyo Odin link worked!
Thanks guys I flashed to Froyo and it worked!
I've since flashed clockwork recovery and gotten Serendipity 6.1
As far as getting into download mode I had to use one of the USB jigs.
I ordered one from the guy who does the rom reviews but you could make one as well.
On another note the new ROM seems to be discharging my battery really fast
Before I start investigating it as a problem I am going to charge it completely then let it discharge completely to calibrate it.
Thanks again guys
Rob
I just fixed mine last night, I had the exact same problem because of the exact same upgrade. What you need to do is get or make a usb jig. There's a couple resources around here for how to do it.
Here's a video showing how to make one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rdn5GoRjhn0
Once I got my phone into download mode, I used Darky's ROM Resurrection Edition ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940671 ) to restore my phone. Just scroll down to where it says "Files Needed" and download the Captivate version. Once you have that downloaded, use the jig to put your phone into download mode and follow the directions in the Darky's video (jump to about 2:30 into the video). Once I had my phone booting, I used clockwork to install Serendipity 6.
Hope that helps you as much as it helped me!!
went to radio shack, got all the stuff to make a jig and i was able to get my phone into download mode! now to try darko...... thanks everyone!
odin doesnt reconize phone
which odin3 are you using? 1.7? or the one click to stock?
you mentioned you had the bootloop problem before, so you should be using odin 1.7 with 2.2 stock.
open odin
get phone into download mode with your nice jig
unplug jig and plug in computer
box in odin should turn yellow.
And make sure you have the correct drivers installed. CRUCIAL.

I'm stuck in the same situation as the OP.
I've been trying to use the method mentioned in the quote below, but the multiupload links are not working for me. I've been trying for 2 days to get to these files.

Yep, tried the Odin one click - caught in a boot loop with the AT&T Logo. I have yet to try the Heimdall one.
UPDATE
Tried Odin and Heimdall One-Clicks - unsuccessful. I'm think I will need the stock Eclair firmware file with Odin and the pit file.

You ever get this to work? - I'm in a similar situation. all flashes 'work' but get stuck at ATT on boot. Not sure Eclair is an option or not since mine is a refurbished phone that started on 2.2

If one-clicks aren't working, you might need to grab the full version of Heimdall or Odin and flash a full package. Some of the newer phone builds don't like one-clicks.

Hey all, just got my Captivate 2 weeks ago and successfully rooted and flashed with custom ROM following the directions on all the posts here. Last night, while attempting to switch from Paragon 3.0 to Phoenix 4.0, installation was aborted. After several unsuccessful recovery attempts through CWM, I finally followed directions and used Odin-one-click. Odin did its thing and phone rebooted immediately and got stuck in a loop.
ATT screen flashes on and off when phone is powered on. When plugged into PC, phone flashes empty battery and computer does not see the phone. I've tried just about every button combination I've come across and about every permutation of button/battery/USB/Odin combination on the PC to no avail.
Is my last resort the USB jig? Or are there other options? Any and all help would be appreciated. And thank you to all of you whose posts I used to get me this far.
Patiently awaiting any assistance......
If you can't get into dl mode a jig will be needed

Is that what you were referring to?
Yes and that is what caused your odin problem

Hi, I have a SS/ATT Galaxy S. It was working fine. I made the mistake of running an update to change the ATT splash screen. The device boots to the ATT splash screens and stays there. You can hear the SS start up sounds as though the unit booted ok.
I've tried various Odins they all hang on file analysis. I've tried using different computers per the recommendations in the various threads. I've tried many of the one click and also separate file updaters. They all hang on file analysis.
I am able to use Droid explorer to view the device. I've also put a new update.zip on an sd card but nothing seems to change the splash screen.
I'm not sure how to tell what version the unit is currently on.
I can get to the 3 button state. It says Android System recovery <2e>.
I have the options to reboot, reinstall packages, delete all user data and delete cache data. I've tried each of them, no change.
I have tried to read many threads before bothering anyone. Your input would be appreciated.
Thanks
if you have the update.zip on your phone, in the root of your SD card.. then from 2eRecovery, select reinstall packages.. may have to do it twice. That will boot your phone into clockworkmod recovery.. and from there you should be able to mount storage- put a ROM on your device, flash and be good to go.
Reply to thread
Hi, Thanks for the fast response. I've tried update.zip on both an sd card and also via droid explorer, about 5 times. If I reboot, same thing, the ATT splash is there, and the Galaxy boot sound. I can get into recovery and droid explorer works. If I try Odin it hangs on file analysis. Anything else I can try? Thanks again.
Are you in dl mode when you try this, or recovery?
The phone is now bricked. I was in recovery mode as I saw the 3 button posts on holding the up/down and pwr. I just tried it with dl mode and odin3 and bricked it.(based on another forum's input to check repartition I think). Now it won't boot at all but I'm still able to get to dl mode but not sure what to run to fully recover.

If you can get to dl mode try using AIO Captivate to flash back to stock 2.1. I've had success as I flashed with the partition checked and had to go all the way back using ODIN contained in the AIO Captivate program. Found here

Yeah if you can get into download mode than you are not bricked. I would Odin or Heim back to JF6 and go from there. What happened when you tried reinstalling packages from 2e? I know you said everytime you reboot- but what did it say when selected reinstall packages?

Now on to some real ROM flashing!! Glad you got it working. I did almost the same thing and was sweating bullets.
Yeah, it was quite scary. I actually purchased some 100k resistors on Ebay but didn't need to make the jig.
Can you recommend a good set of f/w to load? Is it worth it to move to 2.3?

Hello. I have searched the forums and have not really found out an answer to my question. Earlier in the week I tried installing Andromeda with an ursa minor kernal I believe? (I was following a tut on youtube) I succesfully got ursa minor on my phone but the tutorial failed to mention I had to put Andromeda on the internal sd card to flash it. (first time trying to flash a rom so big noob). I decided to go back to stock and retry using Odin One Click. Odin bricked my phone because it is build number 1108 :/ I have an infinite ATT world phone boot loop because of this. I will be trying to make a jig/buying one soon to get back into download mode to fix this. I am not sure exactly what I am supposed to do once I am in download mode. I want to get back to stock. Obviously Odin One Click doesn't work because of my build number. What steps should I follow to go back to froyo 2.2 and to retry? Please help I am just not sure.

You'll have to use the full Odin program and grab a stock ROM from the development section. Once your in download flash stock ROM with through Odin or heimdall. I'm not next to my computer so I don't feel like fishing for links ..but should be fairly easy!

When I got my phone (about a two weeks ago) it came with 2.2 already on the phone. I don't need to get to 2.1 but I was thinking I'd go to 2.1 and then upgrade to 2.2 using att? If I can?
But why? If you got it as is and its stock its att's 2.2. At any rate If your so inclined on flashing 2.1 the one you mentioned thats using full Odin with pit should work. I suggest doing it if and only if you have that jig handy. Also keep in mind that .tar probably has bootloaders in it (wich is a risk you really dont need to take) just my 2 cents

Get ursa minor back on your phone, then mount usb in mounts and storage, then copy the Andromeda3 zip to the drive. You were almost there.
Fish around in the usb port with 301kOhms of resistance from radio shack. You will hit pins 4 abd 5 and you will be in download mode.

Thanks. I tried putting the Andromeda on the phone by copying it over to the phone through the mounted sd card but it was all of a sudden "write protected" and showed up as a cd instead of an sd card. :/ I know I was real close but I made some mistakes along the way
also, when you say fish around the usb port. you mean inside the phone? Is there any danger of hitting the wrong pins and possibly hurting my phone? (say i hit pins 3 and 5 by mistake or something) or is it all pretty safe? I was going to try and attempt the jig method that only used the resistors but n oticed the pins were horrible small in the phone:/

It's not inside the phone... it's the USB port on the phone. One pin is on top and the other is on the bottom. If you don't have a JIG, that's the easy way to do it. There's no power on the USB port. This is a quick way to do it. You'll be fine. It's safe.

Sorry, that is what I meant. I meant to place where the charger is plugged in to. Just seems like the pins are really really tiny. Thank you for your help gonna get my resistors hopefully today and get my phone working again.
Hi there,
To brief the story:
Tried to upgrade my Rogers Captivate non-root Froyo to Gingerbread trough Kies the first attempt failed as after 30 min there was no progress on the installation bar, I disconnected the phone and restarted it, it booted up well and again I tried to upgrade. This time the bar filled up to 10% and then the screen on my phone went all Pink!! and the progress got stuck, then the phone was in semi-bricked state. I tried to flash back to 2.2 stock ROM on Odin 3 v1.82 the progress failed half way with a all purple screen (the green bar on Odin was almost at the beginning of the procedure). I thought to get it into DL mode once more to see if I could succeed but no DL mode anymore, all I get is random dots all over the screen!! and even when it gets connected on COM, ODIN cannot reach it anymore and it fails at Setup Connection. My belief is that my phone is bricked totally, but wanted to see if anybody on XDA has any thoughts for this.
Thanks for the help and time in advance.
Chrs.
Sounds to me like a faulty connection. Try another USB port or another cable?
Try heimdall..and another cable

your phone is not bricked. if it were bricked it would not turn on.
the pixilated screen means there is no params.lfs file on the phone anymore.
if you can get into download mode the phone can be saved.
try flashing the ATT one-click odin first... and rogers 2.2 after.
if still not working....
then i would try another USB cable, yours might have a bad connection.
next i would try another computer.
If anyone know trussello does.

Thank you guys for all the responses.
I guess I found the cure for it. I plugged the phone into the power and after a while (5 min or so) the screen turned all white (the same as all pink and all purple thing which if one notices can see the very blurry shade of the notification bar on top!). I turned it off and try the volume up and down DL mode method, it turned on in the same all white screen, I started the Odin and voila, it passed the setup connection step (cannot relate the connecting to the power with the resolution I got in any way!!!). I got the stock version back now wanna try to root and clean up the mess.
Chrs,
BTW I am trying to update it to the most recent gingerbread version Rogers provided:
- in Kies it shows I-896!! although I used the Froyo stock version posted in Xda by TRusselo
- Therefore it doesn't recognize my phone and therefore I cannot flash the recent update
- does anyone have a stock version of the most recent 2.3.3 update handy?
another problem I got into is that I cannot browse all my media file in storage mode, out of 2000+ pictures it only browses 900 and even I cannot copy those as it seems unreachable
any suggestions/clues?

ATT is i897 Rogers is i896.
Yes, but as TRusselo pointed out the CSC is missing so that is why it just shows I896.
Before getting into fixing the CSC I need to copy all my gallery files. I can browse them on my cell and swipe through all in the gallery but cannot copy them through neither of the connection modes.
-For Kies Update and Media modes it takes ages to cache the images but it fails to get all of them and then even fails to copy
- mass storage only browse 900 out of 2000+ where I cannot copy them
any solution for this?
Thx for all the help.
Trussello, a few things...
1. The guy who released that has 22 posts, no track record
2. That's a heimdall pacakge, not Odin
3. My one-click is much easier.
4. The only reason my package is tagged beta is because Heimdall is not fully operative for flashing PIT files. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1266172

I believe I put something in odin bootload that I wasnt suppose to it was an accident as you see I am a total noob at this then I use the 1 click unbrick now my phone keeps rebooting itself but i looked at the about phone which i get to for a few seconds before it reboots itself again and this is what it says
Firmware

I have tried a master reset since I could get it into debug just that it keeps looping and it worked in odin but not on my phone and this is what it generated

Ok I gave you the only warning in the PM. I have moved this thread. A word from the wise. Learn what you are doing before you do it. This is not something to be taken lightly. You could very easily mess something up beyond repair. Take a few hours to spend reading and researching.

I have tried that it doesnt work. thats was one of the 1st things I tried
try this

Make sure you're using a usb port that is on the motherboard (back of computer). Before you plug in your phone to flash, set up Odin first. Put all the files you are going to flash in the right places. After Odin is fully set up, plug in the usb to the back of your computer, then to you phone. Make sure you are in download mode. If the usb still isn't working, try a different USB port that is on the back of the computer. Connecting the usb to the back of the pc is very important. Odin doesn't recognize my phone when it's plugged in the front, when the phone is in download mode. Only the back usb ports.
If Odin still doesn't recognize the phone, try a different USB cable. But do everything else the exact same way as I described.
Also make sure you fully setup Odin before you plug your phone in to the usb.

I just tried that....it worked but now I'm stuck at the ATT logo
You probably have mismatch kernel and bootloader loader. Maybe you can try to wipe data / factory reset in recovery.

If you continue to go into a bootloop then I recommend a USB jig for the galaxy s series. I had had that happen before, Nothing worked, couldnt get it into download mode, couldnt get into recovery, Until I got the USB jig, Fixed my problem right away, and I flashed back to stock. The USB jig is only 6 bucks on ebay. Ill link you if you are interested.

I know you're trying to be helpful, but there is no such thing as a kernel/bootloader mismatch...

Are you sure? Becuz I tried to flash an overclock kernel on my rom, and kept getting a bootloop. Then after flashing a few different kernels, the kernel that came with my rom didn't even work. I had to go back to stock and reflash my rom.
Idk, maybe it was just me then. I apologize. thank you for correcting me, that's how we learn what's right, and what's wrong.

noob advice
I'm a noob, so this comment might just serve to show how little I know, but whenever I find myself in a bootloop situation, I've noticed that the problem starts with the initial attempt of installing a rom via a kernel with an older version of CWM. During the post-install boot sequence, I'll see the AT&T splash screen, a CWM screen with script running, and then a reboot. Usually, accessing the CWM (now on a higher version) and reinstalling the rom will get it working. Not quite kernel / bootloader mismatch, but close.

Try this.
Buy a jig. Either off of Ebay or mobiletechvideos.com
That week get you into download mode.
Then find the HEIMDALL flasher for a build. (my favorite was the one click for saurom Kk4)
Install heimdall drivers, and flash. Boom. Functioning phone.
