Despite whatever notifications I have and whatever ROM or kernel I use (even stock), the trackball won't flash. It simply lights up at random whenever I'm using the phone. I can also send an echo command to the correct directory and make the trackball light turn on or blink so I know it's working. What could possibly be wrong? It also won't come on at all if the display is off. Is that normal? I'd like to use that for notifications instead of the LED but it's no good if it only works with the screen on.
The trackball light isn't used for notifications. I think I have seen some apps for using the trackball for notification, but if not you will have to do some xml editing to use it for notifications. If the other lights come on but not the trackball it could be a problem with the rom. When porting a rom from one phone to another there has to be edits to files to make it work. If none of the lights come on, then it is because your phone deems it bright enough where you are at.
Ah alright. Out of curiosity, do you know which .xml file I'd have to edit? Or rather if it's even possible for it come on with the screen off in a Sense 2.1 rom?

I tried a bunch of searching and just keep finding stuff about trackball wake, trackball colors, etc.
My problems is that my trackball will only light up on an incoming call, nothing else. Not email, text (even with Handcent), or tweets.
I was previously running CM 5.0.6, which they all worked then. Of course I updated to Froyo this weekend (Thanks Paul!!), with a full wipe. I have also reflashed Pauls new Froyo with no radio this morning with no change.
Any ideas?

OK, evidently the trackball will only light up for me when the screen is off. So try this. Download handcent, send a test notification to your phone, but don't click ok, simply shut off the screen and see if the trackball lights up.
Also, I don't know how some people are managing to get it to light up with the screen on, because as soon as my screen powers on the notification dissapears. I remember in Cyanogen there was an option to pulse while the screen was on, but so far I've been unable to find it in the stock FroYo build. Anybody have any suggestions?
got it all worked out now.
I had to turn off quick reply in Handcent. It was turning on the screen and therefore not allowing the trackball to light up. I just sent a text with screen off and it worked ok. I guess the "test notification" in Handcent is not 100% yet. I havent seen an option to pulse while screen was on either...dont think its there, yet.
Ever since upgrading to CM6 Stable, LEDs Hack has not completely worked for me.
I have it set to disable all lights when plugged in, except the charging LED. It does this fine, however it is failing to intercept notifications (text/email/missed call/variosu app notifications) and just lets the trackball flash away.
This is incredibly annoying and distracting. It usually wakes me up because the trackball is so bright in darkness.
Is there an alternative app that can do a similar job and do it right?
I could always turn my phone face down but I don't want to do that!
In Froyo an app is able to disable LEDs, so being rooted and using LEDs Hack is no longer necessary; perhaps the developer stopped supporting it at that point?
I haven't used LEDs Hack since the developer added the same functionality into Bedside for Froyo, which faithfully disables all lights, LEDs included, on CM6 for me. It's 99 cents, but you get a great side-table clock along with it!
I'll look into Bedside, thanks - I suppose I can always refund it if it still doesn't work for whatever reason!
These changes have been merged into the latest nightly. Expect to see it in the new dinc build on 11/30/2010.

Hey fellow dinc users. We've been complaining for too long and now we can complain no more (or some more)
I've made a patch that fixes the led notifications so that green and amber blinks now. You can flash this over any version of cm 6.
The led blinks like stock, but the blink rate is not configurable.
-Flash in succession works for different notification colors.
Flash like any zip. Be sure to back up.
Bug: There seems to be an issue with the led light colors not being properly set by CM settings.. Here is a possible solution:

Next: Bingo:
Set a custom color (somewhere in the pink-red range). Got a red LED immediately.
Now flash color, blink rate work as advertised.
Hopefully that helps narrow down the issue me and CUViper are seeing.

Devs: I've started a Gerritt issue for the fix. I'm not sure if I broke things for other phones.. so hopefully there'll be more contribution from other devs to get this into cm6.1..... update- they didn't like my generic liblights fix, so I've made a device specific one for our inc. It works right now, but I will clean up the file when I get a chance.

I think it should. But please let us know if it doesn't!
Let me do a backup and I'll try it out.
nice.. much appreciated! what's left in terms of issues? just the cam force close or are there others? once the cam's fixed.. i'd like to use cm as my daily
The camera really only fcs for 720p recording with autofocus. I might look into it over Thanksgiving.
The led issue was just really bugging me and I was getting impatient lol..
No, go. When I get a text it doesn't blink, or even stay on like it did.

Sorry man, there must be other changes in Ruby that I don't know about. Have you tried changing the colors of your notifications? The driver only responds if it's green or red.

I don't believe Ruby allows you to change the color of your LED. We only have two anyway

You should try an led tester or handcent. An app that lets you change test the color of the led. I could recode the patch to default to green for all other colors, I believe that would make it work for MIUI. Pm me if you're willing to try it..
I think many users may want it blink for Ruby. Though, it does work just fine as it is being only solid. Reason I sorta perfer that is I'm not being tricked into thinking I have a notification. When it blinks I have to always take a second look at it
I tried LED Tester, only colors we have are green and red.
For the apps that have built in LED configuration, like handcent and kik. THey wouldn't even have the orange LED blinking right, which leads me to have it set to no blind in CMsettings and the app settings.
Will this fix work with those aswell?

I'm not sure what you mean, but I can use handcent's settings to set the led color. Only green and red work though. For the apps that don't have a way to set the color, I can control it using cyanogen's settings under the led notifications menu.
I added some review comments in Gerrit for you. When I tried it myself, I wasn't able to get it working until I uncommented your BLINK_FILE writes.
This b0rks the green LED when charging above 90% Now both orange and green are lit.
Also rather then plain green flashing I get nothing :/

When remove the comments, don't the blinks go sporadically?
I intended for the leds to be able to have both red and green, but it looks rediculous so I'm going to fix it.

I'm not sure what you mean by sporadic. It's a quick blink about every two seconds, longer off than on. But with your comments in place, I don't get anything blinking lights at all. The solid charge light works, but blinking notification doesn't.

Interesting, try setting different blink rates, it definitely works!
I'm posting a new version fixing the issue with both lights showing up.
Ok, this is weird. I built your second patch from Gerrit, pushed it out, rebooted, and then suddenly I was getting the opposite of before, now a long blink on with a short off. So I went into Advanced and chose "Reset all colors and apps", and now I can't get anything to blink at all. I'm about to give up and let you and others figure it out...
Can you tell what all the settings are for you? I have only the default "Miscellaneous" category, and I've tried "Always pulse" on and off. The other Advanced settings don't look like they should matter, but I have the rest all off. Then I go into the applications list and choose Gmail, set it to green or red, choose any blink rate, and then "Flash test" does nothing.
You should get a long blink with short off..
I just repeated what you did..
Reset all notifications,
Goto led settings for gmail,
Test flash does nothing,
pick green..even though it was already selected...
Test flash and it worked..
Not exactly sure why it doesn't work for you. lets see what the others say.
Normally they stay lit if I have a notification. I turned the back light notification off through clockwork. Im running assonance 4.3
But I think they are helping to fuel my extra battery loss. What can I do to turn these lights off if the phone is asleep.
Check the Assonance build log, it probably has backlight notification (BLN). You'll need to turn that off if you want.
You might have a BLN app, or otherwise you'll have to do it throught Clockwork
I already stated in my original post that I had disabled the bln from clock work. Do you have any other ideas.
Does optimus 4x has led notification light?
No, the O4X doesn't have it.
And the app 'LG Notifications' doesn't seem to work for 4X yet. It worked fine on my 2X.
This app flashes the light in the buttons whenever there are new e-mail, SMS, missed calls and so on.
Great app, and hopefully they will get it working on the 4X soon.
didn't found anything about front-button-led notifications in settings..
all i found, is to turn on/off light on buttons, and timeout for them.
I am very sad, because the best device in the world (4X HD) does not have the LED, please we want a solution for that.
Good Software AND Hardware AND IPS WOW.
I think we(somebody) can use(make a rom) to bring the front button for led notification.
the button's have led's, then there must be a way to use them for notifications
Unfortunately no program of the market, active touch LED notification!
Install the app NoLed, it is very useful and works on 4X perfectly. Different kind of customization to suit your lifestyle, e.g. icon, color of led, time to turn on/off led. It saves you trouble to press the Power button to check whether there is email, SMS, missed call,..............in. case you miss the sound notifications.
There are also other features to save battery - notification timeout, dismiss with proximity sensor (dismiss notifications when phone is in pocket or upside down), etc.
Yep, nice app !
I installed this, but I don't get it! Surely you have to wake your screen up to see what you've missed? How is that different from what the lock screen shows you?
(Those apps that light the soft-keys look great, if you could individually light them, one for calls, one for messages, one for emails (Not sure if the phone could even light them one by one)

It works on my 4X perfectly, I even tried to add the Time yesterday and it pops up with the notification. No need to wake your screen up, that's the idea of NoLed! Look up the setting to see what you missed.
BTW, you can let the Time light up constantly but surely it will drain out your battery very fast.
