New warranty phone. How to back up? - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so FedEx should be here soon with my replacement phone. I want the first thing i do is to back it up completely. I am wondering what the best way of doing this would be. TiBu? will that back up all that i need to save for a future restore to stock. nv_data and everything.

I'm not really sure what you mean to accomplish. If you want to be able to restore to stock, ODIN is your friend. Backups are usually only important for retaining and restoring changes or data you make. The easy process is to use TiBu on the apps/settings you want. Then copy the TitaniumBackup and any other desired folders to your PC (or external sd) so youc an copy them back and restore from them in the future.

1. Root the device.
2. Install ROM manager, and busybox.
3. Go to CWM console, and backup ur device. Copy this backup at a safe place.
Till here, u have a device set to the settings u had it delivered to u.
Though there shouldn't be a need, well, would be helpful in case u wanted to for some reason.
When u need to restore to what they sent u, u'd need to go to stock, apply this flash, and remove the root, and the two apps above.

Backup Question

I have a couple of questions I am hoping to get help with. First if I have a custom ROM on my phone like MoDaCo and I wipe back to factory will it also add back the apps I removed like Nascar, footprints, ect. I am asking because after I wiped it through the recovery screen it did not add these back. The second question is when trying to do a Nandroid restore from when I first rooted the phone after I updated it, I get an error telling me it has to be done from the shell. Can I do this and if so how? Thanks
can anyone help with this?
Are you using RA-1.2.3??
My Nandroid backups have never asked me to restore through terminal.
Your back up maybe corrupt?? If so, I am not sure if people have had success loading a Nandroid from another phone, but you are welcome to one of my factory backups if it works. Can someone confirm a Nandroid from another phone will restore? I will Send if it does.
Also, the factory reset in RA1.2.3 should put back all apps. It is a "Factory reset" though I have never done one without immediately loading a rom. Who knows how its actually supposed to work.

I am using RA-1.2.3. I guess it is possible the backup got corrupt when I moved it to my PC and then back to the phone. What is strange is none of the backups I had saved would take. I was able to do a backup and then right after that restore it so I know it works. I did about three factory resets and it would not add back the system apps I removed, but I think before the Sprint update when I first rooted the phone it did add back all the apps when I reset the phone. I could be wrong or it may be they came back when I put MoDaCo 1.1 on the phone since his ROM has everything with it. Thanks for responding.
last MoDaCo Rom I loaded (1.2c) all the stock apps came back, but I also loaded the Optimzation.zip so i wasn't sure who put them back.
Good to know it was the MoDaCo. It seems that even loading Rom's most things are fairly persistent and don't get wiped or over writen which is nice.
WinMoBo phones usually wipe everything out when you do this stuff.

doing a "factory reset" will not replace stock programs you deleted, it will just delete all your settings and apps you installed.
It's a misnomer in fact.... but when HTC made the option, they assumed that you hadn't rooted your phone. That's why all they really delete is the stuff in /data. Nothing in /system is added or modified.
If you really want to do a true factory reset, get the RUU from HTC and run it to reset your phone to exactly what it was when you got it.
As far as Nandroid not working, I've never had that problem either, but if your backup is corrupt then RUU will be your only option.

Quick Question :D

So, I get a replacement hero in a few days from sprint, what is the chance it will have the 2.1 update already? <(Opinions) Because then i wont be able to root mah phone D:
Secondly, I'f i have a nand droid backup from THIS phone... after i root the other is it safe to use that nandroid backup on the NEW phone?
1. Zero chance you will get 2.1 preloaded.
2. Yes you can restore your Nandroid. Backup your new phone first, then paste the old phone's Nandroid inside the new devices Nandroid folder (i.e. HT9BBHF99999).

nandroid backup will restore a point in time copy.
If you're using a2sd do a nandroid+ext backup.

For safekeeping you can, sure. But when you switch ROMs, if you want to switch back to your current, keep the nandroid on your SD card. Then just do a nandroid restore and it'll put you right back where you were when you backed it up.
o alright i see now. it say in the folder like the date i made the back up and stuff. ok cool, thanks a ton !

No problem. If you want, you can change the name of your nandroid backup. Doesn't matter what it's called. Just don't put any weird characters or spaces in it, and it should restore fine.
I usually name mine something like:
DC_2.0.8.1_5.12.2010_before_screwing_around
yeah thats what i did. i named it like DC rom. fresh 2.0d rom. ect.

How do you do that? This is what is messing me up everytime I switch ROMS as I always seem to get a boot loop unless I wipe my ext and lose all my apps. Then I have to redownload them.
I tried Titanium but it doesn't seem to back up your ext.

cheers

Is there anything special I need, I'm on Roger Cid rogers001 and it seems as if it's given everyone the hardest time unrooting, an Ruu for rogers001 would be fantastic! So do l my tonight rooted to gain access to the backup folder? So that path you gave me, is that where my backup from the PC be transfer. Sorry for all the question!

in the supersu app you have the option to completely unroot. it should work..
yes, to access this folder you need a root explorer and a rooted device. then you can copy/move the backups with the root explorer on the device to the sdcard. after this you can find the backups on the PC.
cheers :highfive:
ok update, got home and installed supersu app, and it said to update su binary and I tried that but it didn't allow me to. Then I read I should install supersu.zip from recover, and I did, now I cant run supersu at all there's no binary installed. Also tried es file explorer, and root broswer, and went to mnt/shell and then its blank, there's no clockworkmod/backup. I dont think I have root access, and I tried to turn it on in settings but it wont allow me to. I think my phones rooted but I dont have root access of the rom, is that correct in saying, thanks
Managed to get back to stock rom, but need to find a stock recovery, then I should be able to apply the update thats available and it should be all back to stock, hopefully, wow I've been learning lots about android lately, lol

were you able to find the stock rogers recovery? I'm looking to instal OTA update and need to flash to stock recovery...
Nope never did find it. I'm still looking. I need OTA update as well! I'm getting bad call reception!
I've heard using stock AT&T recovery.img works, since recovery images aren't really specific to the different carriers. Maybe try that out? Has anyone else ever tried that that can have some input?

Backup/restore Nexus 6

Can I just restore the twrp generated nandroid on a replacement nexus 6?
not recommended, but you can try; just be prepared to restore it from scratch if it locks up..

Do NOT do this. A nandroid contains files that are device specific. You could end up needing a new replacement.
The replacment is another nexus 6 and I'm talking about the backup that twrp makes.

I know what you are talking about. Apparently you do not know just what the nandroid does or what its purpose is. A nandroid is a back up off the partitions on your device and some contain files made per device.
Just save yourself the head ache and set it up fresh. Doesnt take too long.
K thank you for the info
ok, all you people saying no, ive done this a few times with absolutely no issues after. BUT, it has to be done right, or you will have issues. just be sure that you create a nandroid on the new n6 first. then delete that new nandroid and stick the old nandroid in that same exact spot, within that folder. if the nandroid is from a phone thats not a n6, then make sure that only data is backed up and restored, nothing else.

Then you are running a very big risk of messing your imei and baseband up permanently. Nandroid backups include all partitions. They should only be restored on the device it was pulled from. Too many people trying to take the easy way out and being lazy. This leads to people doing warranty returns which to be honest unless you always remained stock and never modded then you should never use.
I'd done this to my one plus one but restore only boot , system and data partitions none other , no problem.. But thus is Nexus 6 , I don't want to take risk.

Before telling someone they are wrong. Let alone me. You have to take into account how normal people will do it. Now just from your statement people will be expecting an IMEI partition. When they dont see one they will do a full nandroid and then guess what happens? You have to remember that people understanding what they are doing is not the people that need help with something like this. No one that has any real clue would restore a nandroid from one device to another. Hell most dont even bother with nandroids anymore. They are more noob tools then anything else.
