I don't see why not. I've used micro USB cables from other phones and devices for my DInc and it has yet to fail me.
host mode
If you just need an adapter then get an adapter.
The item you linked to is for using the phone as the HOST when mounting flash drives or other usb devices from the phone. Our phone does not have the driver stack needed to mount external usb. I am not even sure we have a usb controller chip for host mode.
Here are a few links I found the last time I went looking for a way to mount my point-n-shoot in order to get pictures from the camera straight to the phone without having to use a PC as a middleman.
http://hackaday.com/2010/02/10/usb-host-mode-for-droid/
http://community.htc.com/na/htc-forums/android/f/91/t/2122.aspx
There maybe a way to do it but I am not a coder at all and have no clue how to add the needed drivers and what not.
Good luck and please let us know if you figure out a way to do this.
Thanks for clearing up that host thing.
Well, damn.
:/
This would have been useful to hook up external hard drives or flash drives.
But you're sure about that? Cuz the female end would be sticking out of the phone, so something could be plugged into it. So maybe it will work? I dunno.
Sure the physical conection will work. but I don't think the phone will known what to do with it.
A cat's male conector will fit in a dog's female port, but that does not mean it will properlly mount so to say... and both may be damaged from the attempt..
Lol.... Freaky analogy.

Where is this at for the tab. Has anyone found it yet. I dont know if maybe froyo does not support the usb host mode needed or what. I saw that it was comming and yet cannot seem to find it. It was supposed to plug into the data port on the tab and give you the ability to attatch regular usb peripherals.
Any info is greatly appreciated

you should try out the Elan Mobidapter, it's a micro SD to USB adapter with integrated USB Host. i'm using the Mobidapter often and im happy with it, but you can only use USB Storages with it. No keyboard support.
BTW: Android itself doesn't have or support an USB Host.

That's not entirely true. Most android builds don't have the necessary usb host support as part of the kernel, but there's nothing to prevent someone from compiling it or adding it in as a module. The Tab is/was supposed to do this OOTB, and based on the pinout information posted elsewhere, there is at least kernel support for determining if host mode should be enabled. With a modified iPod connector from Sparkfun I was able to get the Tab's AccessoryManager process (I think that's what it was called) to see a non-supported device plugged in (externally-powered USB hard drive enclosure), even if it couldn't enumerate it. It could be because I didn't connect the requisite +5V for downstream devices, or because there is no usb_storage module available. More testing needs to be done on this before we write it off completely. Hopefully Samsung will just release their solution(s) sooner than later.
That is what I wish they would do. But im afraid with the tab10.1 it may be put on the back burner
Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk
How did you modify the ipod connector? I have a few ipod/iphone cables lying around but they seem backwards compared to the sgt connector and difficult to modify.
I'm thinking about buying some sgt connectors or cables from china to play with.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
Unfortunately I could not find a supplier of the "mirrored" iPod connectors that the SGT uses. I contacted many China-based component mfgs and none could point me in the right direction for that stupid dock connector. So I got the iPod one from SparkFun, used an xacto knife and small file to grind off the material on either side of the connector that keys it into the mating iPod connector. This allows you to invert it and plug it into the SGT, which then gives you access to all 30 pins. The cheap charging/sync cables that you can get from ebay and the likes only come with 5-7 pins connected, and the rest missing.

you know what sucks? I had a $100 haipad that had a microusb jack and came with a 6" adapter cable. guess what? you could plug in usb sticks, a usb mouse, or a usb keyboard. worked perfectly. mouse had a pointer, keyboard worked without a popup, it was all quite magical.
that was on a 2.1 resistive touchscreen chinese tablet.
why the hell can't the tab to this?
I have everything planed out for my tab install for my Dodge Magnum. But since the Nexus 7 doesnt have a sd slot I need to find a cable that can charge the tablet and use my flash drive at same time.

Any help would be appreciated.
I found this on the bay : item # 140839631580 (Can't post link I'm too new... I was a lurker for a while -_-)
i didn't think the N7 could support power and OTG
You want it for video or audio? You could try a wifi solution for audio. Or be the guy that gets the pins to work.
there is NO data and charge at the same time. This is due to how the device switches from charge to usb mode thru the pin 4 . it senses rather a data cable or charge cable is being used . will not charge via otg..
there are several threads with experiments trying to get this work .You could use a wifi or bluethooth drive for data...
I have no clue what im doing but this is what im playing with at the moment. Its a old dock for sgs2 i believe but it has a dc and usb input on the back of it.
Im about to this because i have very little patience for china.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008CQKM2U/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&smid=A24Y22QERZZ9SS
Would get the cheaper one but the juiced one has a flexible cable vs the fixed usb on the other one. Would this be pointless though?
Unfortunately OTG sends ground up the sense pin to trigger host mode. Once activated it sends 5V DOWN the USB cable to power your USB devices. Trying to send voltage up the cable at the same time to the Nexus would not be a good idea. The only way around it I can think of would be to hack the firmware to only activate the data pins in host mode and keep the power circuit seperate, then you could power the USB device from a modified dock/hub which sends power up the USB cable to the device.
A lot of work, and without the powered hub, OTG would be useless!
In the long run wouldn't it be easier to just plug in the power lead when needed and have the otg in the rest of the time? (or vice versa). It would mean you having to have easy access to the usb port but I can't see an easy non technical solution to connecting both at once.
Don't use the Nexus 7 for a car install. You can get an Acer Iconia A100 with a full-size USB port to connect to whatever external storage solution you want, and it's usually about the same price or cheaper than the Nexus 7.

Same principle. In normal OTG host mode the tablet powers the peripherals. A USB keyboard/mouse will be no exception to that.

Ofcourse there is charge and otg at the same time by just simply shorting pins 4 and 5 with a resistor,in my case for xperia p , a 100k resistor does it.

So I played around with these Touchpads, and I really like them. I bought one for $100 which was a good deal. But I was under the impression that they had a MicroSD slot from what my friend said.
So what I plan on doing is taking CR2 Raw files from my Canon SLR and putting them onto a MicroSd and show clients right after I took them with the Touchpad. The whole reason for me going down this road. I have tried looking through this site and really couldnt find anything.
So I found an adapter that will plug into the Microusb plug and I was wondering if there was thing better that you guys would suggest and or is this a good buy?

For your setup you'd need an OTG cable with a way to supply power. Something like this should work if you have a USB power source, like your charger or one of those battery powered USB chargers. Then you'll need any USB microSD reader. The card will show up under "/mnt/usbdisk".

Sorry to say, I have yet to see a powered OTG cable in a retail store, even my geeky local "has a majority of stuff Monoprice carries" store does not have this particular type of cable.
If B&H Photo/Video has these in stock, it should work (but it'll cost more than getting the OTG cable on eBay)
Pioneer DJC-WeCAi 2.6' DJ Controller Cable - $29.00
Neutrik NAUSB-B USB Female Type-A to Type-B Converter - $5.21 (If you can find an equivalent that's not designed for panel mount, all the better)
Comprehensive On-The-Go USB A Female to Micro USB B Male Adapter Cable (4") - $2.99
-OR- NTW USB Type A Female To Micro USB Type B 5-pin On-the-Go (OTG) Pigtail Adapter - 4" - $5.99
-OR- StarTech Micro USB Male to USB OTG Host Adapter Female (5") - $5.99
$37.20 or $40.20 (if you go with a more-expensive OTG adapter) plus tax...
more expensive than the Chromecast itself but everyone has priorities.
Connections would be:
Pioneer cable RED A (flat) end --> Chromecast wall power adapter
Pioneer cable BLACK A (flat) end --> USB OTG adapter cable
Pioneer cable B (square) end --> USB A-B converter --> plug your USB Stick in here
USB OTG adapter cable --> Chromecast
You might find the right parts to get this cheaper, you just need to plan it out in your head. I was just sticking with stuff B&H has since they're in NYC.
Thanks,
I was planning a visit to B&H, but now it became mandatory.
I'll try the one from #3. I could wait until I get home, but can't leave NYC without rooting or bricking my Chromecast, in my hotel room.

Just so we're 100% clear, you'll need 3 total pieces to make it work - the Pioneer cable, the USB A female to B female adapter, and one of the OTG cables.
I also hope you've already checked your serial number against the rootable serial numbers and you know that the hotel's TV may not have HDMI enabled, and even if it does, its WiFi probably won't allow Chromecast to work.
If you brought your own wireless router, then you only have to deal with the TV though. Actually, if possible, I would take everything you need
with you to B&H. If you explain what you're trying to do, they might let you borrow an input on one of their TVs - then you won't have to worry about the hotel TV being locked, unless you already know it's not.
Good luck!
Just to add these cables are usefull for more than just hacking a Chromecast.
I use one to connect Hard Drives to my Xoom (Tablet) since my ROM supports OTG.
Sn are 3920 3921 3922, this shouldn't be a problem. Ref cables I'll take a look at the links later at the hotel. Thanks for your input.

Also can you simultaneously power the device and provide input using a usb hub(plug in keyboard and mouse for example)?
I went to the computer store. Bought the following:
The adapter which is 2.0 by the way.
USB 3.0 HUB with Power Adaper.
A male to A male cable.
While connected to a the HUB, and while the device is on its says "NOT CHARGING". I turn it off(tablet), Not getting a charge while connected to a the hub. It also drained it while the tablet is off. Nevermind the hub for power.
NO CHARGE FROM HUB
While connected to the PC it drained the power down to 6% then went back up to 50%. Not sure about that because it seemed to charge while it was off.
NO CHARGE FROM PC
As for the power adapter that comes with the tablet to it. Not charging while ON. Turn it off and no charge.
NO CHARGE FROM ASUS POWER ADAPTER
SO no it doesnt charge in any practical sense from this VIVO adapter as far as i can tell. Maybe its the MALE to MALE cable. I dont know. But its not worth trying if there a chance of drain killing it.
Unfortunately from the adapter there is no media connection or usb debugging to pc or usb hub afiak.
NO MEDIA CONNECTION OR USB DEBUGGING
The good news is that the device can connect to the USB HUB and the keyboard , mouse and thumb drive work flawlessly together.
