NC just "updated" itself back to 1.0.0 and lost root - Nook Color General

Autonootered 1.0.1 NC was sitting on the table in my house, just picked it up to see an update notification that it was updated to 1.0.0 and I lost root.
WTF?

You did block OTA updates, right?

Didn't know I had to
So, I'm looking at rerooting? I assume I'll lose everything?

How do we block OTA updates???

Wow,
Went to edit my post with the link and there were two replies in like 3 minutes! Yes, you should block OTA updates. Never let a rooted device update itself without knowing the exact impact. Learned that through years of enjoying a hacked DirectTivo (for saving recordings, NOT theft of service).

I know not to accept an OTA update, but I've not experienced a device updating itself without "asking". My Evo tells me or I go ask, which of course I never do.
Where do we block OTAs?
I just got my NC yesterday, rooted it last night, I'm running stock rooted, Zeam, Opera browser, DLed a bunch-o-Apps, and that's about as far as I have gotten.

Something convinced it to revert to stock. Best bet is to do a back to factory reset, make it update to 1.0.1 (unless you have some earthshaking app that won't run on 1.0.1) and block OTA updates via renaming. Then don't change it until you really need to, like a superROM comes out or B&N gets 2.2 released and the community digests it and posts new rooting instructions.
Mine is at 1.0.1 and rooted. To be honest, what I run 99% of the time is Nookie Froyo off a fast SD card. I'm waiting until B&N releases a new FW to play around with the internal install again.

Pretty sure that's been determined that it does NOT block OTAs at all..

Good news,
There is one coming to test it. 1.1.0 was released today for manual downloads. OTA to come.

[Q] Trouble Updating Magazine Purchase

So, I used Autonooter a month ago and am definitely satisfied with the device now. There is no way I would go back to the stock B&N ROM. Unfortunately, I've been having issues updating my Nation magazine subscription which was purchased through the B&N store before I rooted. To clarify, I was receiving updates after I rooted. It's just that those updates stopped about 2-3 weeks ago. It's keeps downloading the same issue; no new ones.
I attempted to get service through B&N, but I guess everybody and their momma is trying to contact them. They haven't gotten back to me. Should I un/re-root and update? I figured that would be the best bet....I just didn't want to download all my apps again I'd appreciate any advice.
Peace,
So, really, 58 views and no comments? If no one has run into this issue then, I guess, that's cool. Thanks for the peek(s).

autonooter doesn't change the rom right? also i got my feb issue of car and driver with a rooted nook
I woud do the 8 boot reset and then reset the data and re-root it. Many have had issues so they reset it back to stock and reroot it. It fixes most problems people have
Thanks, ya'll. I will wipe and re-root...when time permits.

[INFO] Atrix Gingerbread Preview [Update #4 - More Information & Screenshots]

Update #4: I previously thought Motorola would OTA to 2.3.4 instead of 2.3.3 now that I'm seeing 2.3.4 builds. But, it looks like my initial projections were probably right. We'll be looking at 2.3.3 for the Atrix on OTA. Then, there will be a separate update to 2.3.4.
I was recently updated to a newer build: 4.5.47. This build was finalized on 05/24/2011 04:46:02. We've got a month more of builds already, which means the Atrix Gingerbread update should be nearing completion.
Read more about the Atrix Gingerbread update in July here: http://briefmobile.com/atrix-4g-headed-for-july-gingerbread-update
Update #3: Some more video showing the new Blur interface in action. http://briefmobile.com/motorola-blur-on-atrix-with-gingerbread
Update #2: Netflix works flawlessly on the Atrix with Gingerbread! Check it out: http://briefmobile.com/netflix-on-the-motorola-atrix-gingerbread
Update: Looking into three new root possibilities. Progress communication may be limited for certain reasons. Also, I posted new pictures on Facebook.
Here's a preview of Android 2.3.3 for the Atrix 4G!

Details
Code:
Android 2.3.3
Webtop: wt-1.2.0-76_OLY-1
Build: 4.5.40
A nice guy gave me this to see if we can get root and such. He requested that no one have access to the files, and I'll be keeping my promises. Sorry, guys!
Anyways, we can test out root exploits. All of the traditional ones seem blocked, including Gingerbreak. I haven't tried beforeupdate/afterupdate yet. I'll be trying that later.
too good to be true! haha!
Thanks Kenneth!
Just saw this on your website! Very exciting! I can't believe they managed to break gingerbreak on it though. Typical Moto. Is it an update or an SBF that you have?
EDIT: Someone brought this up on IRC. What about webtop?
I was given a service file that doesn't wipe data when it updates. I was pretty sad when I saw that Gingerbreak was borked.
Hope this comes soon. However i won't update anyways. Not unless you can flash back to 1.26.
no disrespect but we all knew it was coming....now a real surprize would be a download link

Hey Ken. Any idea on when it will be available for non att users? (i.e Bell, Testra)

I do worry about something though. Everytime I have flashed an SBF file my phone goes back to stock and I have to go through motoblur account setup and all that again.
However, with 1.83 when I flashed the sbf, it didn't really go back to stock. In fact, my fingerprint, go launcher settings, wall paper etc were all still the same.
Did this mean the flashing process didn't work alright?
I ask b/c i wouldn't want to miss a FOTA update of gingerbead.
Finally
Looks dope ! Can't wait

No. There are two kinds of SBF files. Service SBF files and regular ones. "Service" ones don't wipe the data partition on your device. You're fine!

Hopefully Gingerbread comes out roughly the same time for users on all carriers. We'll see, though. I wouldn't get my hopes up for a simultaneous update.

Kennethpenn: Please do be careful. It would be a bummer if you found a small tweak to gain root, which your nice friend relayed to the big M. You know this, of course.
Thank you for having the class to not simply leak the files. Restores some of my faith in XDA! ;-)

Best news I heard in a long while!
Any chance of benchmarking this sucker?
Looks great! Kinda wish it came with the stock Gbread keyboard though...Oh well, can't hurt to try out an updated Moto keyboard
Kenn, as far as you can tell are we finally able to customize the double-tap home feature, or is Moto still making us use their select apps?

Fair enough. The 'none' feature is actually all I really need. The app quickdesk could probably work with the double tap now if none is selected on the Motoblur end. Thanks!

Software version 1.3 for Encore possibly coming

It will perhaps coincide with a lot of new content available for those that are unrooted or are on rooted stock within a couple weeks.
I don't know if you people ever figured out the OTA mechanism for B&N updates for certain. Everytime someone claims they know the answer it ends up like how people who present the definite answer on how LI batteries truly act.
Given that, if you are on rooted stock its probably best to keep your nook off wifi. Unfortunately, it does not act like the original nook which indicates that a software update is being downloaded. It is all done in the background. If you need to connect online, you should be fine as long the connection is broken before a nearly 200 meg file is downloaded to your device. If you are on CM or HC, this obviously doesn't apply to you.
I don't have hard evidence to give you that this is certain because I don't know myself, but I'd advise you to pay attention. If its a nonissue I'll have the mods kill the thread. Good backup habits are highly advised. Mods that don't know how to talk to me quickly probably shouldn't be mods.
I'm curious as to why you believe this. Though it doesn't really apply to me. Also do you have any additional information in which what the update will contain?
feel free to PM me

Nope, changing the build prop just works. Wife's NC has been at 1.0.1 since December. When 1.1.0 (?) came out I updated her build prop and it's never updated since.

New Update Coming Tonight to Testers?

heard the news on androidcentral about a new update .902 being pushed to testers tonight, anyone trying it out?
someone get it out to us, if its true.
It appears that the next Motorola Droid Bionic update, which follows the massive bug fix roll out that happened back in December, is on the cusp of heading out to the public as the software is headed to testers tonight which means that a release should be just around the corner. The 5.9.902 update won’t be as packed as the previous one but it brings a couple of interesting things to Droid Bionic users.
The main thing here is that Verizon has removed the VCast Music preload aka bloatware from the phone. So if you haven’t rooted your device and gotten rid of it already, it’ll be gone soon enough.
Big Red has replaced VCast with another piece of bloatware in the Amazon MP3 app, an app that is arguably useful.
Droid Bionic
Other pieces of the update include:
Motorola Terms and Conditions screen automatically enables data collection/location details
Google security patch to block access to change Home panel icons
After factory reset, location consent screen shown on activation screen
Change “Terms and Condition” screen title to “Motorola Terms of Service”
So, not too exciting but this is a maintenance update and now a full-blown bug fixer. There are also still some mysteries here too, like, what does “Motorola Terms and Conditions screen automatically enables data collection/location details” entail exactly?
Fortunately, we should know everything there is to know about this 5.9.902 update later on today when it reaches Droid Bionic beta testers.

So the big thing is VCAST? The people that tried 901 made alot of claims about what it did. Would it be safe to say...those things are not listed in the fix list, but a result of trail and test?
902 is the same as 901 just with that lil extra crap that you see they added.. Only time will tell once reports from the soak testers start coming in...

so, from your experience with 902, you like it better?
Ok cool and all..... but what about Root?
We barely were able to hang onto our Root with the .901 update!!
Has anyone found a way to root once on .901 or .902?
Because as you know the only way to get root on .901 was tricky and risky.
I love 901!!

So, did anyone actually receive the .902 ota? These threads have been surprisingly quiet today. I know soak testers are sworn to secrecy. It would just be nice to know a soak test is actually in progress.

Forever root worked fine for me. Nothing tricky or risky about it. And, as of last I heard, there's no way to root on .901 or .902. You need to forever root before moving up.
All,
In a posting on the Motorola Forums,
Matt says it is all a rumor:
"What the heck are you talking about? Why would we do this?
Guys, this is all just rumor. You know the soak tests have credibility when they post my confidential emails on the tech sites, right?"
https://forums.motorola.com/posts/40cc13fd3f?post=40cc13fd3f&start=91
I think for now this should be put to rest.

Hey I did not get ota update! KFHD

I did not get the 7.2.1 update. I moved a file called otacerts.zip to a different file, I saw this in another thread and will have to look for it to give proper credit. I also have super User blocking ota's but that is no guarantee.
I have not been forced to update automatically as well, I have only installed Voodoo OTA RootKeeper. Would rather not update.
I saw in another thread ota root keeper did not work. Some one used it and still got the update.
i switched off all automatic/silent updates and deleted otacerts.zip earlier.
Should i expect my KFHD to be updated in any ways and one day Amazon will bring me an easter egg, surprise? or this is just enough and we see the problems at those guys who forgot to turn off the auto update mode. Please let me know.
so far so good

No one really knows, what needs to be removed to stop force updates, because I have done nothing but voodoo, and I have not received it. So its all question marks for me at the moment.

Same. However, no evidence that an OTA attempt happened yet. Might be they are pushing in waves.
Scarey! I'm just a noob, (but I don't want to be, lol) and I have worked so hard to get this thing the way I like it. Sometimes hours and hours. If I have to do it over I think I will scream, and maybe take a hammer to it???
