I would think it depends on where you buy it. I am pretty sure from hearing about it that Barnes and Noble employees are required to open and update their stock with current software. But Best Buy's and such I don't think do. Being as the last 2 NC's I bought had v1.00 on them even though 1.0.1 had been out for quite some time. No doubt 1.1 rooting should be available anytime now. And it won't be a concern. But for a guarantee I would go with BB or someplace other than B&N, mind you, you might get better support if you need that sort of thing via B&N. I got all mine from BB.
So 1.1 isn't rootable? Is there a way to tell what version im getting before I buy it?
Im completely new to this. I have a Droid Incredible rooted, is this similar? Run the clockwork recovery mod then flash a custom eclair rom or something of that nature?
All the BB by me are sold out, does anywhere else sell them?
Barnes and Noble brick and mortar, some walmarts, of course best buy... I had to go to a city way south of me to find one after best buy couldn't exchange my defective unit and had to return my cash.
Well all the best buys within 200 miles are sold out. The B&N down the street has them in, I guess ill have to chance it.... I REALLY hope I can root this thing
No, there is no way to know what software is on it till it boots, but seriously I wouldn't concern yourself with it, as long as it isn't B&N I doubt it is updated. Like I said all the ones I have gotten in the past WEEK were 1.00 not even 1.0.1. And 1.1.0 will be rooted anytime now, within today or tomorrow if I was a betting man. So it will still be rootable pretty quick.
And I bought all mine online, did 1 Pick up in Store, the others I had shipped, so even if it isn't in stock in store you can wait a couple days to get it! There is also Amazon!
I'm going to pick one up from B&N today, maybe if I tell them im in a huge hurry theyll let me go without updating it, lol...
Hopefully the newest version gets rooted soon
Bought mine at the local Walmart and it had 1.0.1. I knew more about it than the person who helped me, but it was much more convenient. I brought it home thinking I would hold off rooting it, but within 2 hours rooted it was!
I just foun someone in my town on craigslist selling "mint condition" version 1.0.1 with case for $225, we'll see...

Hopefully the Craigslist works out, otherwise I would go BB Online, Amazon or find a BB or Walmart that has one cuz like I said earlier, I think the B&N guys open their stock and update so when customers pick them up they are updated and work the way they are supposed to in their stores. So if that is the case, there is no pleading that you are in a hurry, it will have already been done before you pick up the box.
My advice is to keep checking your local Craigslist. I put a WTB ad and found one, new, for $200.

Does anybody know where I can buy a nook color in the uk I have tried to look but cant find any thing.
I then came across a advent vega but cant get one of them either, I'm desperate to get an android pad that will run 2.2 so I get flash support but they dont seem to be anywhere.
I did then see a commtiva tab but I dont think the hardware of the commtiva is as good.
Could anybody help me out here as to what I could get ite where to get in the uk.
The only one I could actually get hold of was the commtiva but I dont know how good it is really compared to the advent or nook but I cant go above £300 to be honest.
Would love your help and advice

I can mail you one from the states for 400 USD via paypal.
I am in france, order it from amazon last week, still not here yet, I guess I also need pay tax for that, which sucks.
I am also still waiting to see if it will be available in UK soon so i can order it from there..
I've got mine from digitech.ch, switzerland.

update:my NC send in today, strangly no extra tax....
i have one i'm willing to sell.
I'm not too impressed with it. seems to be way underpowered for a "tablet". maybe its not even underpowered, and if not, the rom needs to be tweaked.
3 days old so far. let me know if you want it, if not its going back to b&n soon.
300usd + whatever to ship?
I got mine in sweden via my dad in the us, took ages via usps though!

I would consider buying one and sending it out. I only want to do one or two just as a pay it forward kind of thing, as a thanks to XDA. I'll do it for cost plus shipping. Of coarse I would want prepayment upfront. I also will only do it for someone who has been a member for awhile and also has a good number of posts.
Keep in mind, build quality isn't great with these things if you want an unopened one. I can open it and make sure their are not any dead pixels and nothing horrible is wrong with it.

This guy is clearly legit.
Hey guys,
First off, are you happy with your NC?
This would mainly be used as a reader/web browser/app games for the wife, so I'm thinking she would really enjoy it.
Also, what's the best place to grab a NC? I haven't seen them less than $249.
Thanks!!!
I just got one from bestbuy. Its still $250 but you get a $25 gift card too.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Barnes+...1218266244893&skuId=1517163&st=nook&cp=1&lp=1
You likely won't find them any less expensive than $249 at any legitimate retailer or etailer. Perhaps there will be another BN eBay special like last month some time in the future ($200ish). The suggestion that yurkinator made is probably going to be the best legitimate deal currently going (as long as you can stomach shopping at BestBuy).
Beyond that, I wouldn't buy one from an average eBayer or via Craigslist. It's just too sketchy... You have no idea what the history is with the unit and if it has any latent flaws. If you get it privately, warranty repairs will be more of a hassle since you won't have the original receipt. I bought my first one from Wally World; the microSD slot wouldn't retain the card. Took it right back to Wally World, got a refund. Bought a new one. No fuss, no muss...
Is saving, say, $50 worth the potential headaches?
Thanks for the responses and I completely agree with you about not buying one off craigslist or ebay. I'm going to jump on best buy deal since I can't find any staples coupons.
Can't wait to tear into this thing!

I got lucky and B&N was having a promotional sale on ebay about 2 months ago and I got 2 NC for 200 bucks each. I would keep an eye out they may do it again.
Since no one else mentioned it I'll toss out that my girlfriend loves her NookColor. I initially bought it so I'd have something to play around with and she'd have something to read on from time to time. After about a week it became clear that she was never actually going to let the thing out of her grasp and so I was forced to buy my own. Not sure if this helps but I have my girlfriend's running the stock OS and nootered while mine is running CM7. Since she does read allot she likes the tight integration of the Barnes and Nobel stuff on her home screen but can't imagine a world without Fruit Ninja, Bubble Buster or any of the Angry Birds.
I'll put in a plug here for buying it in a Barnes & Noble store. That's what I did, and the biggest reason was that if I had any issues I wanted to be able to walk into the store and resolve them. If I were going to buy at Best Buy (something of a circus at the least) I'd make sure I could do a warranty exchange at a B&N brick and mortar store. I also did something I don't normally do and bought the B&N extended warranty -- which covers the thing even if you drop it into the tub. Oh yeah, I love the thing -- got stock 1.2 and CM7 overclocked running off a SD card. Use it with a bluetooth portable keyboard and Documents to Go -- and I've read a ton of books on it.
Appreciate all the responses.
It's going to be mainly my wife's device to read, browse, game on, so as much as I want to get into it and throw CM7 + Honeycomb on it, I might wait a bit to see how she uses it.
I'm going to pick it up this afternoon and give it to her tomorrow as her b-day present.

Y'know, you make an excellent point. If you're going to pay full retail anyway, why not just go to the source for the reason you mention.
Personally, I went to Wally World because I bought during the early February nook drought. Nowhere in the greater South Bay Area (CA) had these in stock except for one WalMart in Salinas, CA.

Bought two from the mother ship, about three months apart after getting my wife one for Christmas and nootering it, I needed one for me!). For hers, I bought the B&N warranty, but for mine, I went with squaretrade. $50 for 2 years vs, $40 for 3 years.
I'm planning to get one for my gf for christmas but i'll only have a weekend in the US to purchase one and have to make sure I get one.
Are they in stock at AT&T stores nationwide? I'm going to be in south florida (miami/ft. lauderdale area) and just want to make sure. I tried ordering on AT&T's website but you can't purchase it without a contract, I hope it's not like that in store too.
Any suggestions?
Simply put, are they in stock everywhere or will I have a hard time finding one?

Hard to say, I bought mine the first the day it came out. The AT&T store where I got it only had one (the one I bought) but maybe in miami they´ll have more because it's a larger city!!!
I didn't have to get a contract, but some people have reported they were forced to get a contract at AT&T retail stores

I had same experience, it looks like most AT&T stores had 1-2 quantities, best to call if interested maybe you can get a $100 reduction due to employee false advertising (a mistake made during my transaction but honored)
Thanks for the replies... This will be the weekend the make it happen so *fingers crossed*
At least there isn't a mad rush for them it doesn't seem.
As others have suggested call ahead. I went in yesterday not thinking they'd have them. They haven't gotten their display units in and only had two in stock. The salesman said since November they only sold one. Most people don't know about the camera yet and Samsung hasn't done its national campaign yet.
I'm in NY, had to hit 3 different stores - 1 didn't even carry it, 1 tries to sell me a contract to get it, in the third store I asked for a manager because I wanted to buy it full retail without a plan, finally walked away with it in my bag. Oh yea, i love this thing!
Generally you can go to the AT&T website, find the Galaxy Camera, click on "Check In-Store Availability", and then give the Zip Code for where you are interested. Any that say "OUT OF STOCK" are indeed, out or never had. For "IN STOCK" it is best to call first unless you don't mind driving. Stock is based on the previous day's updates, and you never know who might have been there first.
Well, just to update everyone, it was a no go.
None of the stores in the Miami/Ft.Lauderdale area had them in stock.
Thankfully they have started popping up on amazon so i went ahead and got it there. Also kinda happy that I got the unlocked one also since i wouldn't be using it on AT&T anyways.
So the camera is with a friend of mine and i'll be getting it next Friday.
Amazon has a deal for Amazon Student members..... ChromeCast for $29.99 and add promo code 7CGHXJ2C comes to 24.98 and there's FREE shipping. Not sure about the ROOTABILLITY but thought I'd throw this up for us who may want to buy a few. PS buy a couple and check them out if you cannot root them, box them up and give them for presents :good:

I'm pretty sure all of the rootable ones are gone. Very rarely will you find one on the back of a rack in a box store. I'd say these online ones will all have newer firmware on them.
Although seriously, mine is rooted and have flashed it... but I don't notice a difference. It doesn't really add functionality for me. Still a great gift for someone who travels.

I think it is on sale for 49.99 on T mobile website now
could that price attract more people to develop for this phone?

Yes it is. I don't know if this will attract many more people to the device though. That would be nice to have more devlopment.
Best Buy has been Price Matching them for $50. I got 2 there, Firmware was D41510e now D41510c with TowelRoot

Same here. This phone is amazing, totally worth $150, but even more awesome for $50.
I just got done flashing back to 10c firmware and I'm trying to unlock the bootloader and flash a custom recovery. Looking for a stock ROM without all the bloat - CM11 sounds awesome but it looks like there are still a few issues (no video recording/playback and camera not taking pretty pictures - though I have to read and see if any of that has been fixed).
Well that was fun.
Just got back from a local Best Buy here in Las Vegas, I called ahead of time to check stock and to verify their "Price Match Guarantee" thing - I could have just ordered it from T-Mobile's website but, why wait a week for it to ship if I can get it tonight, right?
So, on the phone they try and blow me off constantly: the first girl I spoke with said they wouldn't price match, the second said they wouldn't price match if it's not in stock, then I got someone to ask the Manager (who would not speak with me on the phone, oddly enough) and he said they wouldn't honor the Price Match Guarantee on any cellular phone even in spite of that being totally inaccurate. I finished the call by saying "You'll honor it when I get there..." and then promptly ended the call.
Go to the store a half hour later, get the second phone from the shelf - the first one the girl handed me didn't even have a phone in the box, oops... - and then went to Customer Service and asked for the Manager, who came out from the back area and wondered just what I wanted (it was like 5 mins to closing time).
I said I need to price match the LG L90 with T-Mobile's current full retail pricing online at $49.99 and then he basically went into full damage control mode and did like 15 rebuttals to me about why they couldn't/shouldn't/wouldn't match the price: he whipped out his smartphone and started doing research, checked the T-Mobile site but kept hitting the "Add to cart" button before the page even loaded and I kept saying "You have to let the page load first so you can see the actual price."
He just kept at it for nearly 10 mins trying to show me it required activation - I replied "Nope, it's the full retail price at $49.99 and they are offering you the SIM activation kit for another $15 (which is crazy since the L90 comes with a brand new unactivated SIM in the box, I mean really). He kept sticking to his story that it required you to activate it and I kept saying "No, you're wrong there because it's a prepaid device and if it was in stock in the stores I could get it and not deal with any of that and activate it at home when I wanted." He jumped on the "not in stock" thing and I said no, they're out of stock in the local stores here (which they are when I called to ask) but this is an online price for an online retailer and he knew I wasn't going to back down.
I said "Look, there's two outcomes here: 1) you sell me the price matched smartphone and I leave a happy customer and continue doing business with Best Buy in the future, or 2) you don't honor your own policy for the Price Match Guarantee, I leave pissed off, angry, and frustrated, I go home and order it from T-Mobile online for the same price, you lose a customer forever, and then I hand-write (not email) a nice detailed letter to the Vice-President for Customer Relations at Best Buy Corporate about my experience here where I'm 100% in the right and within 48 hours of his Executive Assistant getting the letter I'll get a phone call, an apology, and at least a $50 Best Buy Gift Card for the hassle you ended up causing me tonight."
He didn't like that very much, nor do I think he likes me either but, for a change this customer actually was right.
So I got the phone for the $49.99+tax as I expected when I walked in, proof below...
Tips if you want 'em:
- Best Buy's Price Match Guarantee states that in order for the price match to be available, the actual web page at Best Buy's website must say "PRICE MATCH GUARANTEE" on the page just above the price - the LG L90 does say that so, that's one
- If you read deeper into the Best Buy Price Match Guarantee guidelines there's a disclaimer about contract cell phones - they are excluded from the price match guarantee directly - and I made it clear that I knew this and that this is not a contract phone, it's a prepaid phone - that's two
So the Manager had no actual ground to stand on and was left with no choice but to honor the Price Match Guarantee as written on their website and also on a flyer in their stores (you have to ask to see it, actually, they don't post it for their own silly reasons).
Anyway, just earlier tonight I was looking at craigslist for an L90 believe it or not and decided to check in here for info about any updates, root, bootloader unlocking, etc, and lo and behold I caught this thread so, thank you for sharing the information, OP...
So far I like it overall. Coming from a G2 it's a bit of a letdown of course but, after some tweaking and other playing around I'm sure I'll like it even more.

I am surprisingly happy with this phone. I thought it would be a big step back from my galaxy s4 but I am pretty happy with it. My s4 had sim card issues.
My biggest complaint is that it is not 4g LTE.

I think the cheaper price point will bring more users, probably not many more people developing. Either way good price for the phone.
I believe the only negative impact would end up falling on LG as opposed to T-Mo as LG has allowed T-Mobile to cripple the device with the 10e firmware update. Be forewarned, if you get it now, it'll have that firmware pre-installed and it's a fuss to get it rolled back to 10c to root and then another pain to be able to access a recovery.
I able to get this phone from my work. (Big retail box chain in US. Guess what? They price match!) I liked around the specs for this and was pleasantly surprised about the performance for the price. I walked out with the phone for under $100 and am happy with this device. Always Always look at competitor pricing and find a place that can give you guarantees. Sorry about that terrible experience @br0adband!
Regardless this is a great phone with great specs at a great price, MSRP or not. I might even learn a thing and try my own mods if it isn't rocket science!
