Hey guys,
First off, are you happy with your NC?
This would mainly be used as a reader/web browser/app games for the wife, so I'm thinking she would really enjoy it.
Also, what's the best place to grab a NC? I haven't seen them less than $249.
Thanks!!!
I just got one from bestbuy. Its still $250 but you get a $25 gift card too.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Barnes+...1218266244893&skuId=1517163&st=nook&cp=1&lp=1
You likely won't find them any less expensive than $249 at any legitimate retailer or etailer. Perhaps there will be another BN eBay special like last month some time in the future ($200ish). The suggestion that yurkinator made is probably going to be the best legitimate deal currently going (as long as you can stomach shopping at BestBuy).
Beyond that, I wouldn't buy one from an average eBayer or via Craigslist. It's just too sketchy... You have no idea what the history is with the unit and if it has any latent flaws. If you get it privately, warranty repairs will be more of a hassle since you won't have the original receipt. I bought my first one from Wally World; the microSD slot wouldn't retain the card. Took it right back to Wally World, got a refund. Bought a new one. No fuss, no muss...
Is saving, say, $50 worth the potential headaches?
Thanks for the responses and I completely agree with you about not buying one off craigslist or ebay. I'm going to jump on best buy deal since I can't find any staples coupons.
Can't wait to tear into this thing!

I got lucky and B&N was having a promotional sale on ebay about 2 months ago and I got 2 NC for 200 bucks each. I would keep an eye out they may do it again.
Since no one else mentioned it I'll toss out that my girlfriend loves her NookColor. I initially bought it so I'd have something to play around with and she'd have something to read on from time to time. After about a week it became clear that she was never actually going to let the thing out of her grasp and so I was forced to buy my own. Not sure if this helps but I have my girlfriend's running the stock OS and nootered while mine is running CM7. Since she does read allot she likes the tight integration of the Barnes and Nobel stuff on her home screen but can't imagine a world without Fruit Ninja, Bubble Buster or any of the Angry Birds.
I'll put in a plug here for buying it in a Barnes & Noble store. That's what I did, and the biggest reason was that if I had any issues I wanted to be able to walk into the store and resolve them. If I were going to buy at Best Buy (something of a circus at the least) I'd make sure I could do a warranty exchange at a B&N brick and mortar store. I also did something I don't normally do and bought the B&N extended warranty -- which covers the thing even if you drop it into the tub. Oh yeah, I love the thing -- got stock 1.2 and CM7 overclocked running off a SD card. Use it with a bluetooth portable keyboard and Documents to Go -- and I've read a ton of books on it.
Appreciate all the responses.
It's going to be mainly my wife's device to read, browse, game on, so as much as I want to get into it and throw CM7 + Honeycomb on it, I might wait a bit to see how she uses it.
I'm going to pick it up this afternoon and give it to her tomorrow as her b-day present.

Nice birthday present, way to go!
I've not yet been disappointed... Frustrated, yes. Disappointed, no.

Y'know, you make an excellent point. If you're going to pay full retail anyway, why not just go to the source for the reason you mention.
Personally, I went to Wally World because I bought during the early February nook drought. Nowhere in the greater South Bay Area (CA) had these in stock except for one WalMart in Salinas, CA.

Bought two from the mother ship, about three months apart after getting my wife one for Christmas and nootering it, I needed one for me!). For hers, I bought the B&N warranty, but for mine, I went with squaretrade. $50 for 2 years vs, $40 for 3 years.

I would think it depends on where you buy it. I am pretty sure from hearing about it that Barnes and Noble employees are required to open and update their stock with current software. But Best Buy's and such I don't think do. Being as the last 2 NC's I bought had v1.00 on them even though 1.0.1 had been out for quite some time. No doubt 1.1 rooting should be available anytime now. And it won't be a concern. But for a guarantee I would go with BB or someplace other than B&N, mind you, you might get better support if you need that sort of thing via B&N. I got all mine from BB.
So 1.1 isn't rootable? Is there a way to tell what version im getting before I buy it?
Im completely new to this. I have a Droid Incredible rooted, is this similar? Run the clockwork recovery mod then flash a custom eclair rom or something of that nature?
All the BB by me are sold out, does anywhere else sell them?
Barnes and Noble brick and mortar, some walmarts, of course best buy... I had to go to a city way south of me to find one after best buy couldn't exchange my defective unit and had to return my cash.
Well all the best buys within 200 miles are sold out. The B&N down the street has them in, I guess ill have to chance it.... I REALLY hope I can root this thing
No, there is no way to know what software is on it till it boots, but seriously I wouldn't concern yourself with it, as long as it isn't B&N I doubt it is updated. Like I said all the ones I have gotten in the past WEEK were 1.00 not even 1.0.1. And 1.1.0 will be rooted anytime now, within today or tomorrow if I was a betting man. So it will still be rootable pretty quick.
And I bought all mine online, did 1 Pick up in Store, the others I had shipped, so even if it isn't in stock in store you can wait a couple days to get it! There is also Amazon!
I'm going to pick one up from B&N today, maybe if I tell them im in a huge hurry theyll let me go without updating it, lol...
Hopefully the newest version gets rooted soon
Bought mine at the local Walmart and it had 1.0.1. I knew more about it than the person who helped me, but it was much more convenient. I brought it home thinking I would hold off rooting it, but within 2 hours rooted it was!
I just foun someone in my town on craigslist selling "mint condition" version 1.0.1 with case for $225, we'll see...

Hopefully the Craigslist works out, otherwise I would go BB Online, Amazon or find a BB or Walmart that has one cuz like I said earlier, I think the B&N guys open their stock and update so when customers pick them up they are updated and work the way they are supposed to in their stores. So if that is the case, there is no pleading that you are in a hurry, it will have already been done before you pick up the box.
My advice is to keep checking your local Craigslist. I put a WTB ad and found one, new, for $200.
I want to get the best deal on one of these, is Craigslist the place?
Or should I buy new for $250? or are there some going for 200 new?
Retail, you'll find them new for $250. (I haven't seen them go on sale)
There was a deal on B&N's eBay store (that only applied to ebay purchase) for $50 off... making it $200. But that deal has since expired.
After that there is the Craig's List or ebay route to take your chances and buy a used one.
Although I'm sure most people will not have problems, I wouldn't buy a nook over ebay or craigslist and I'd spend the extra $50 for new. That way you have full warranty for one.
That's true. I'm trying to convince my mom to get one but she keeps saying that there will be much better technology in a couple of months...
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
There will be... for 600-800 bucks.

yeah, but that's like saying you should get a galaxy tab or Xoom over a Nook. For the price there is nothing like it. Sure in a year from now we might see more, but in two years from now, we'll see something twice as good as that, so it's all on when you want to get into the game. I personally bought the nook with the thought that a year or year and a half from now I'm going to upgrade and spend the good money on a good one (if I still want it)
There is always something better coming out tomorrow. You just have to figure out what it is that you want in a tablet. I for one wanted a tablet to mess around with a decent price point that has android on it and i can download some apps and have somehing to easily browse the web. I originally bought a archos 101 which is a very cool product but after a couple of weeks I realized i couldn't stand the viewing angles of it, i mean i could barely stand to look at it in landscape mode and it was unbeariable in portrait mode as it just messe with my eyes. So i got the nook color and the screen is fantastic. I've rooted it and installed my favorite launcher and some simple apps that i enjoy using. Plus the great thing bout the nook color is a lot of people are hacking it and developing roms for it and someday hopefully we will have a nice version of honeycomb to play around with.
This may or may not be of help to the OP, but, there is a $15.00 Gift Card offer available for Referral.
With the Groupon B&N GC, I made a small purchase and along with it a free trial of B&N Membership; also I registered my NOOK COLOR bought from B&N Ebay offer. Not sure, which one triggered it, but I received Email from B&N with the above offer.
So, you may want to check with your friends near you.
Regarding purchase for your Mom: her age, eyesight and nimbleness of her fingers, would be a major consideration to make sure a 7" tablet will suffice. Notwithstanding, these factors for older people, I feel this is the best bargain in its price range.

honestly I wouldnt buy it used.. I was considering buying one on craigslist and decided to go to the store... this is why i wouldnt buy it used..
My first nook.. returned it in less than an hour because it had rippling of the LCD beneath the digitzer.
My second nook, returned and exchanged it 6 days later because the bezel was creaky, volume button would stick on the + and it had horrible light leaking on the bottom right (Almost like a big yellow arc you could see at night no matter what brightness setting it was set to).
Now i am on my third nook color.. This one has dust underneath the digitizer between the LCD, creaks alot too..
Based on my experience i would highly recommend spending the extra bit of money just for the 14 day return\exchange policy coverage.. the quality control on these devices sucks.
I have no troubles, but highly recommend getting one new, just for the peace of mind of replacement if there is a hardware problem.
I think I'll pull the trigger once (hopefully) the B&N-Ebay discount happens again....I was on the fence last time last time it had a $50 discount.....
Mine is just perfect out of the box, not any single problem, love it so much.
Would anyone be able to recommend a reseller that ships to the UK? Or one that's based here preferably.

E Bay NC
Got a $200 one on E Bay from B&N New, tried booting Froyo from SD. For some reason the MicroSD went in between the back cover and Chassis. Since I had to take it apart to extract the card, and probably voided the warantee
I decided to go the auto-nooter route and use the sd for storage. Thr back does seem a little creaky now, but everything works fine. Hate those micro sd's, already lost one, and broke another.

I have a current model Coby, with the resistive screen. I don't like it. I'm use to the touch screen on my OG Droid. Also have a NC and I think it is a good tablet for the price. I couldn't see paying $600 for a tablet, especially if I bricked it from messing around with it.
it is true, the dev community for the NC is so much larger than the Coby community.

Thanks; the new Coby (shipping from Amazon soon) adds multitouch and a front camera, so it mimics the iPad2 to a tiny degree. Unfortunately I still don't know any retailers that carry it locally so I could see just how bad the touchscreen is. (I've used Windows Mobile resistive screens, and I think they're fine!)
Has anyone bought their Nook from Best Buy? I found out that is where mine was purchased from based on the serial number after calling 1-800-THE-BOOK. At any rate, without a receipt B&N doesn't want to warranty the dead pixel issue. I'm just curious, does Best Buy put the serial number on the receipt like B&N does?
When i bought mine it looked like they scanned it again after they did the UPC. Pretty sure it was the SN.
Suck-age. The overseas help I got, barely wanted any real information from me, which is why I assumed you would have a similar situation. Granted they did run me around in quite a few circles before agreeing to do so.
Drag...I guess I saved $50 but have to live with a dead pixel.
So for all those other threads asking about "what should I look for when buying a NC off Craigslist" I guess this is your answer! LOL

As much as I love the Nook Color, in a year or so, I'm sure there will be something competitive in price that is better. And by that point I'm sure you can sell the nook for a decent price still. As unlike mainstream tablets that can be phased out, the only way the nook will be, is if they release a Nook 3.
So there will still be people unaware of it's tablet capabilities looking for a used one for reading.
Well, I'll probably just keep it as-is. I mean its 1 pixel that you can only see on a black screen and it shows as blue. You can't even see it on other colored screens.
It's more of that "I know its there so it bugs me" kind of thing than an actual issue. I'm just a cry baby. I want perfection at a great price.

That's the reason I paid full retail for mine from best buy. ****, I even paid the extra 60 bucks for the additional protection, which covers stuff like broken screens.
I bought mine from best buy (didn't really want to) and when I had screen issues B&N replaced it without even asking me where I bought it. It's strange that they're giving you the run-around, the NC isn't even a year old at this point regardless of where you bought it.

Best Buy does NOT put the SN on the receipt. They can, however look up the receipt easily. Do you know who bought it for you and around what time? They can look it up by phone number. Also, check to see if it has anything with "GSBTP" or "GSBTP-R" on it if you get it. This means whoever bought it also purchased a Geek Squad Black Tie Protection Plan. On the other hand, even if you don't have one, if it is still within the first year of purchase, Geek Squad will ship it to B&N for you and it will be fixed as long as its determined that the problem is user error. Unless they follow the weird monitor policy for broken pixels. There has to be at least 5 I think. The only downside is that depending on the store, location of the manufacturer and the time you send it out, it could take a good while. When I was a Geek Squad Agent I told people it could take anywhere from 2-6 weeks.
Oh, they can also look up the purchase via the card it was purchased with if it was bought with one at all.
Wow... I also got a dead pixel on screen from a Best Buy bought NC. I did purchase it online though, as no stores around town had them in stock for 2 weeks. Ah well, I'm not going through the runaround just to fix one dead pixel.
In many cases Best Buy can exchange the smaller less expensive devices in-store under the manufacturers warranty due to defects and even preserve any Best Buy service plan. They likely will just give store credit for it during the first year, though in rare circumstances may have it repaired. It is certainly worth a try to do that, a dead pixel on an e-reader would be annoying.
Your serial number is located under the sd card flap or under device settings.
Barnes and Noble wont honor exchanges or returns in BN stores for items purchased at affiliate stores. If you bought it from a legitimate partner then you can get it serviced under the warranty from BN but you have to call the customer service number for a replacement.
It stops people from calling in service on stolen units.
Squaretrade sells extended warranties within 90 days of purchase. I'd recommend that if you fall into that window. I haven't got mine warranteed yet but plan to.
Sent from my NookColor using Tapatalk
Well, I think there is some confusion. I bought this off of someone from Craigslist. So there is no bill of sale, etc.
However, in talking with B&N, they are going to give me a 1 year warranty after confirming it was sold at Best Buy (as opposed to stolen, whatever).
The back story is that the seller got it as a gift from work but didn't want/need it as she has an iPad. So it was new and unopened when I got it.
Anyway, all is good and I have a warranty confirmed until May 2, 2012.
I'm still not going to send it in though. I mean I hardly notice the 1 pixel and its not worth all the trouble to restore B&N's software and all that jazz. Especially since I used one of my Teamviewer licenses to register this device as a corporate device (you only get 10 moves before they start to question it, and this is technically the second move). BUT....if any more pixels go out, then I will use the warranty.

Are you guys wrongly comparing Brand-new NC vs. Refurbished NC?
Amazon tablet has nothing to do with those price-dropping NOOKC.
If the brand-new NC is dropping price then it's legitimate to say because of the impact of the Amazon tablet, this is not, this is refurbished, people.

I have 2 that do not look at all to be anything but new. I suspect that B&N is flooding the market and you may get new or refurb. Have you ever seen any tech gizmo that was this popular and had this many refurbs floating around? Unless you have some solid inside info from either Amazon or B&N I take your advice as simply an opinion.

the nook color price hasnt dropped, its been $249 for a while now
the nook color refurbished price has dropped, from $225 to $169.
the reason for the glut of refurbs? no idea/opinion.
is B&N reselling refurbished NC's for cheaper and cheaper, an attempt at saturating the channel before amazon releases their tablet(s)? perhaps.
i got mine about a month or two ago for $189 from b&n through ebay; so could read books, comics, study, and do light surfing (reading the tech news). i only got it b/c i could root it, which i did via microSD card and run android/CM7. my wife has been "borrowing" it during the day to read books while at work (she is a nanny). she also will be "borrowing" it to read books when she stays home with our first child, in the fall. she finds being able to read a book with one hand and turn the page with a finger MUCH easier, especially when holding a baby. she loves the quality of the screen and is getting used to the touch screen interface.
will any other tablet de-throne the NC for the sub $200-250 tablet market segment - only time will tell. competition is a good thing for all consumers. i look forward to new tablets, but i will probably stick with my $250 investment (NC, 16gb microSD card, silicon cover, screen protector, neoprene bag) for at least 1-2 years unless anyone comes out with a tablet that is as fast as my workstation/desktop for surfing for approx. $250, which will probably happen in 1-2 years at the rate we are currently moving. that, or the battery fails to maintain a charge after doing 50% drain every day. The question is, will tablets hit the metaphorical wall, as we did with computers and the current 3-4ghz processor "cap"? only time will tell.
I have purchased two refurbished Nook Colors from B&N's Ebay site and they have both been perfect. Now my son wants one. There are some other sellers on Ebay selling refurb units. Are these the same as getting them from B&N? Has anyone had problems with any of the refurb units? A seller with the name NextWorth has them right now for $99.
I picked up a 3rd party refurb of the Nook Tablet without any issues. Just make sure you read the posting carefully to see exactly what they are selling you. Also make sure they have a good return policy and you should be ok.

'B&N via Ebay' was selling the 8GB Nook Tablets for $150 a few days ago.
In my opinion that is a better buy than a refurb Nook Color.
You get a dual-core processor plus the std. warranty.
Keep a lookout on SD and you will get lucky soon.
Here's the thread:

I couldn't look at the listing from NextWorth at work. Now that I have seen it, I see that this is seller refurbished. I think I definitely would prefer to get something that is manufacturer refurbished. There are some listings for $126 on Ebay, or I could get one at the local Microcenter for $135 if my son can't wait.
I just saw the post yesterday about the Nook Tablets for $149 and was going to go that route but they are no longer available. Again, it just depends on if he wants to wait longer to see if they become available again. We are going on a trip next month and he wants to have it by then.
I just bought 8 Nook Colors from Cowboom (all 7s) for $99.99 each and put CM7 RC2 on them, but they were for coworkers of my Wife and I. The $149 Tablet deal is where it is at, but these people wanted an Android tablet with an 8gb Micro SDHC and a TPU case for around $120.
Wow, 8 Nook Colors! You must really be spreading the word. I'm assuming you didn't have any problems with any of the ones you got from Cowboom. I had never heard of Cowboom before, it looks like an interesting site and appears to be somehow affiliated with Best Buy. I didn't know what you meant by the all 7's comment, but that appears to be a rating number on their site. Looks like the higher the number the better. I only saw 1 8, but it didn't come with a charger or cable to that would be a deal killer. I might see if my son wants to go this route if no other sales pop up this weekend. The tablet for $149 would be sweet but I am not holding my breath on that one showing up again soon. What are the TPU cases you mentioned? I would love to find a decent case with a multi position stand that does not cover up the speaker. I'm currently just using one of those rubber things that slips on it.

They are $99 again for the "returned" Nook Color on Cowboom
All 8 were fine. I put Mr.g666's CM7 RC2 on all of them, used the free LCD Resolution app to set the DPI to 220, overclocked to 1200mhz, and have had no complaints. So far I have probably put Android on 15+ of these. Everyone my Wife or I have shown it to wants one once they see it. I would look for a condition 7 with the charger. Some came in the original box, some didn't. You get 30 days from Cowboom but I think if you had a problem with it and asked real nice B&N would replace or repair it for you within a year of registering because they rely on you buying books and games (my opinion).
Office Depot has nook tablets for 199 with a 50 dollar visa gift card on sunday.
Picked up the tablet today and the Visa gift card is given in the store. Did not have to mail anything in to get it, but you do have to pay $4.95 to activate the stupid thing. Running CM7 from microSD and it seems to be working pretty well. If I reboot it, it boots into Nook mode. If I shut down, then power on, it boots from the microSD.

Running CM7 from microSD and it seems to be working pretty well. If I reboot it, it boots into Nook mode. If I shut down, then power on, it boots from the microSD.

Can somebody confirm that we're able to run CM7 off uSD on the Nook Tablet?
Last time (last 2 months) I checked, can't just run off uSD on the NT.
Maybe I'm way behind!

I haven't tried anything else besides the CM7 off of uSD. This is my Son's tablet so I'm not playing around with it too much. I still haven't had the confidence to flash CM7 to my Nook Color's eMMC, plus it seems to run perfectly off of the uSD card so I've seen no reason to. As far as the tablet and CM9, I thought I read that hardware acceleration is not working on it yet so not really interested in trying that until development gets further along.

I was talking about both. I have 2 Nook Color's, and my son has the 8GB tablet. All of them are running CM7 off of the uSD cards and have stock firmware on the emmc.
