I was about to use Odin to return to stock but it froze on the download screen. So I turned it off and now when I turn it on all I see is a phone symbol, a danger sign, and a pc symbol. I can't get any further than that. Please help.
If the normal button/usb combos are not working to get your phone back into recovery or download mode, you will likely need to use a jig.
Yeah I tried everything... Doesn't want to get into download mode. Just stays at the phone!pc screen.

I was trying to switch to Cognition V.2.3.8 using clockwork recovery like was shown on that thread. I did everything correctly and everything worked exactly like was explained. I got to where it was loading the zip in clockwork mod and it froze. Now my phone only gets the ATT screen when turned on and it takes a lot of tinkering to get it to just the recovery screen, but the phone is cleared, nothing will boot, all info was wiped I'm assuming that's including the previously flashed version of cognition. I tried Odin but couldn't really get it going. Not sure what to do. I used Odin for my last ROM, and clock work recovery didn't go quite as well obviously. Please someone give me some good news, and help me unbrick my phone.
Have you tried doing any of the three button combos to get into download mode and restore to stock possibly?..if none of the buttons work, you might have to make/use a jig to get it into download mode. Anyway, just try getting into download and try to restore to stock for now.
Your phone needs to be in "Download" mode to use Odin.

Scroll down to step 1 and try those "Key Combinations" until one of them gets you into download mode. Once you are in, flash back to stock with Odin. Hopefully that works and solves your problem.
If no key combos work, then you need a jig. My phone is one of the few that don't work with the key combos, while my last 2 did fine.

Like the others stated you need to be in DOWNLOAD MODE to get Odin to work.
Also there is a specific method to get Odin to recognize your device and then flash it back to stock:
Turn on ODIN first.
Do NOT have your phone plugged in when Odin is started.
Make sure your phone is powered off.
Hold down the Volume +/- Buttons on your phone then plug in your USB cord. It should go directly into DOWNLOAD MODE and Odin should state that your phone is connected.
Click the Go button and watch Odin do it's magic.
If that didnt work....
Try the "Battery Trick"
Unplug the phone from USB - Power it off.
Pull the battery, SIM, and SDCard (if applicable) from your phone.
Turn on Odin
Plug in the phone to USB Cord (with everything still out of it)
Hold down the VOLUME +/- Buttons
Then while doing all this - pop the battery back in the back of your phone.
Rinse and repeat a few times if it doesn't go directly into DOWNLOAD MODE to make sure you are doing this correctly.
And if THAT doesn't work.
Do the jig (Build a jig - there are a ton of posts here in the Q&A and Q&A sticky on how to do this.)
I flashed m phone back to stock, and then tried to flash the speedmod kernel thru Odin. The flash failed and now my computer will not recogonize my phone and the phone will not turn on. When I try to turn the phone on, I get a phone symbol, ! in a triangle symbol, and a computer symbol. If I restart the phone using the vol rockers and the power button, I can release the power button and instead my USB to get the phone in download mode. But once in download mode, I am unable to connect to Odin to flash back to stock. Any help will greatly help.

You mean ODIN doesnt recognize your device at all? or its stuck when u try to flash to stock...
If Your phone have the 3 buttons issue you will need to do a dungle jig. I had the same issue yesterday and the jig was the solution.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using XDA App
My problem was that I needed to restartt my computer and change ports. After this Odin started working. Thanks for the help.
I did the Odin one click everything was going great everything matched up. But after giving it the command to reboot Odin did not recognize my phone again. Went back in command promt put adb devices to see if my phone was still attached and it wasn't. KNow my phone is stuck on the down load screen what can i do?
So your phone is stuck on the screen after you finished taking it back to stock on download screen after the blue bar on the screen went all the way across and odin said complete or whatever in the box then you should just be able to hold the power button until the ATNT screen comes up or If you can't get the phone to successfully boot try a different usb port or computer or another method to get into download i use the (hold volume up and down and with the phone end of the usb curb plugged into the phone then plug the usb end into the computer should go straight into download... to see if odin will pick you up then, after that just redo odin one click
no odin never reconized it again to give me the blue bar to put it back to stock. Just stuck saying downloading. can I just turn the phone off and go into recover.

Yes you should be able to just turn it off and go into recovery, also then your phone should still be the same as before since odin never did anything to it and you might just need the drivers for the captivate or if you already do uninstall them then reinstall if that doesn't work try a different usb port and then try a different computer
thank try again tommorrow
I installed Amimod that lets me change the transitions between apps, i ran it to change it to a cross fading transition and it said i had to reboot later to make the changes take effect. I kept that and mind and used some other apps. They all didn't load and gave me the "com.xxx.xxxx is unable to continue" type deal with the force quit button.
So i restarted my phone and now launcher loads but the pop ups come saying "com.android.phone is unable etc" or "com.android.media is unable...". There is no status bar and the phone doesn't lock. After about five minutes of trying to press the force quit button, nothing happens. I went into recover mode and cleared my cache but that didn't help.
[tldr] I can get my phone into download mode but is it possible to open the phone as a root folder on my computer so i could uninstall Animod and any changes it made? I don't want to master reset.
ROM reflash is only option.
I reflashed using odin but now its stuck in a boot loop with the att logo. When i plug it into the usb it loops the loading sign and the battery sign. What now?
Have you used odin before?
Which odin did you use?
What build is your phone?
Can you still get into download mode?
I have not used odin before this was my first time.
I used the one that is prepackaged with the .pit and .tar file "I897UCJF6-final-OCD-REV0.exe"
My phone was stock android that i rooted.
Cant get it into download with any button combo.
Under your battery left side on the white sticker. Your phone had a build number. Mine is 1008. 10 meaning 2010 08 meaning august. What is yours
Also tell me exactly what you have tried to get into dl mode
Build number 1011, and now my phone wont even turn on. When i hold the power button it is unresponsive, and its not dead i charged it.

Looks like you will need to try to force the DL mode with the odin instructions or get a jig and see if that works
Download mode
remove all sd, sim, bat
Put bat back in
Hold volume up abd down
Plug in usb
In it works great, if not usb jig
Going forward do not use odin one click use this method

i got it into download mode using the button combos (battery out then hold vol up and down etc) and used the odin 1 click downloader for captivate, but it failed twice.
It got to the point where I had to buy some resistors to make a USB jig. The jig worked fine and put it into download mode but Odin still failed...Twice more. Now my phone wont even show the logo when i hold the powerbutton and the jig doesnt seem to work anymore. Its not the battery because i charged it for a full night before i tried jigging it again.
I would try the non one click odin method now except that i cannot get my phone into download mode.
I have no idea what to do now, it seems like its completely bricked.
At this point (if I'm able to replace it) would the workers at samsung or att be able to access my data at all? I only had the phone for 3 months. And would my warranty be void for rooting/flashing?

Hypothetically, yes and yes, but the reality is they will likely just wipe it and reflash it without ever looking at what's on it. Just tell them something went wrong when you tried to upgrade to Froyo via Kies. That's happened to enough people that they probably won't question it.
I tried flashing back to stock using Odin but it seemed like the program froze as nothing was happening. I unplugged and tried to go back into download mode and the phone stays with a black screen. I tried all button combinations to go into any possible mode and the phone does not reply.
Is it bricked? =(
