I'm trying to get to the bottom of this problem: it started ever since I flashed Cognition 3.02 and Firebird 2 kernel last week. That was my first endeavor into custom roms. This week I'm on Cog 3.04 and Speedmod kernel. I'm in the US on ATT in a big city with good signal strength.
It's the strangest thing: I can hear calls perfectly fine, but the other people that I'm talking to complain of static and background noise, and basically can hardly hear a word I'm saying.
Anyone know what in particular causes this type of situation? I really don't want to go back to stock rom, but I may have too because, well, I do need my phone to... you know, make phone calls.
What modem are you using? You are using an i9000 base kernel you want to make sure you are using an i9000 modem. I would suggest jk4

Look in the modem thread under development. I am using the UGJL2 Modem. Having great success with it.

I'm using the UXJL1 modem. Is this somehow bad/incompatible?
At this point, I'm not looking for any frills or speed, I just need something that's going to be rock-solid dependable. People complain about call quality all the time when I talk to them. It's weird, because everything sounds perfectly fine on my end.
Also, sorry for the dumb question, but I didn't see in the modem thread on how you actually install a new modem? Do I just flash it like a rom/kernel, etc.? Can I use Clockwork for this?
Flash through clockwork. Dl to phone move to sd. In clockwork select install zip from sd, find modem, select.
Jk4 is used by most i9000 roms. I would start there.
Jl1 is a rogers captivate kernel best performance with i9000 kernel will be a i9000 modem
If you are using the firebird kernel you can use a captivate modem for best call quality at the cost of losing hsupa.

Anyone know if it's possible to port http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835540 to the JJ4 cog versions. It's animations and look are great for the speed of cog.

as of version 2.4, I believe Cognition is based on JK2.
http://ponack.net/designgears/
oops, seems like he has reverted back to JI6/JJ4... nevermind
I'm sure he has his reasons for preferring JI6/JJ4 over JK2, but JK2 can be "ported" as it's own ROM if you'd take the effort.
Looks doable, I think official froyo is about to drop but I may try this because the vibrant roms don't have the limitations att imposes like a lack of tethering.
Find one of the deodexed jk2 roms mentioned in the thread that this theme is compatible with, flash the rom and it should boot, a few things will be out of wack like the back and home buttons. And some other things, I cant remember exactly what though.
If it does boot you are half way there, now odin flash a captivate kernel and modem.bin or a kernel modded for use on the captivate, setirons gt I-9000 kernels are nice but drain battery with certain modem files and I don't know how a vibrant rom will fit into the modem.bin switcheroo that is suggested to get all the att bands working. For that reason I recommend a ji6 or jj4 kernel and modem.bin but if you do that you will need to use a kernel that has a 2e recovery our clockwork recovery added in to be able to flash the theme.
If the phone doesn't boot after the vibrant rom is flashed you may need to try flashing to stock then a 2.1 vibrant rom.
You can also try the 2.4.1 cognition rom but I don't think it works with the theme you posted. Worth a shot though. There is also a version of the darkness theme for the cognition rom.

Forgot, before you start I'm assuming your phone is rooted and has jj4, use adb or root explorer to get the swype.apk(not certain if it's needed, depends on the build.prop) and the camera.apk (i believed it had more options and settings) and save them to a safe place like an external sd card or home computer. You may also need the captivate build.prop, dunno with the vibrant build.prop you might not need the jj4 swype.apk, I'm not sure if there will be any I'll effect from using one build.prop or the other.

Hello folks;
A quick question...
I have the latest SpeedMod, and in a lot of threads in the forum people recommend flashing an i-9000 modem with the kernel, with the concern of compatibility issues where you would have the i-9000 kernel with an 896/897 modem.
I haven't had any problems with the stock Rogers Froyo modem(uxlj1) and SpeedMod. Should I flash a new modem anyway? What will the benefit be? Am I just not noticing real problems that are there, or is there something to the Rogers Froyo Modem that works with SpeedMod without the need to flash a compatible modem?
Also, what could go wrong if I do? Seems some people have trouble with data and bluetooth after flashing a new modem.
If you have working bluetooth I believe there would be no need to flash another modem
Thanks for that.
Whenever I flashed Speedmod without changing over to an I9000 modem with it, I had horrible voice call issues where it would sound like I had my vocal cords removed and talked through one of those voice boxes.
Just about to flash Darky's ROM 9.3. Planning on flashing the i897 500 mhz speedmod kernel afterwards, plus of course an i897 compatible modem to match the kernel.
First, is it necessary to do a full wipe if I'm currently on a stock rooted i897 with eclair (2.1)? And must I really pull the sim, sd, and battery? If so , why?
Second, should I flash Darky's captivate fix before the rom or not?
I get conflicting reports when I search the forums.
Finally, what modem(s) would you suggest? I'm in PA (Harrisburg area) on ATT so I need the 850 Band. Suggestions? I'm assuming based on my research here I'll need an i897 modem to match the i897 version of the kernel (assuming it's really necessary to flash the i897 Speedmod instead of using the one Darky's comes with(???))
P.S. Safe to do all this with CW from recovery menu? or must I really install/use Odin? (more work, sigh)
Thanks in advance.
First, is it necessary to do a full wipe if I'm currently on a stock rooted i897 with eclair (2.1)? -Yep, it's not hard. I have 2 bugs than I not to do it. Not work Home button, and my cappy play music throw the speaker than I plug earthphone and the opposite .
And must I really pull the sim, sd, and battery? If so , why? - No. I Flash 5 times and nothing bad happens. And my phone plug into the PC via USB than I flash.
Second, should I flash Darky's captivate fix before the rom or not?
I get conflicting reports when I search the forums. - I don't know. I do not apply any fix, all works perfect.
Finally, what modem(s) would you suggest? I'm in PA (Harrisburg area) on ATT so I need the 850 Band. Suggestions? P.S. Safe to do all this with CW from recovery menu? or must I really install/use Odin? (more work, sigh) - I instal from Odin because before I flash CM7 (on CM7 very bad video works) Use Odin very good program. Not difficult. But if power off yve got a problem.
I have been running firefly and apex. Each of them, when I flashed UCKB1 , I get reboots over and over. I just flashed the Continuum rom. Do all the modems have to start with update? Because UCKB1 says CMWmodem.UCKB1.zip. I'm just not sure what cuases the reboots, but they do come when I flash a modem.
Match modem with kernel

You need to match the modem with the kernel - if you're using an I9000 kernel (like Onix in Continuum), you need to use an I9000 modem. UCKB1 is an I897 modem, not an I9000 modem.
If you try to mix them, various bad things can happen.
EDIT: No, the modem filenames don't have to start with anything specific - they can be named pretty much anything.
Thx for the reply. I guess I'm getting in trouble by using SGS tools thinking that all the modems are compatible. So anything with a I9000 in the zip?

Probably, but like I said - the filename can be named anything.
Here's a good list of modems, broken down into I9000/I897 and 2010/2011:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=876391
(The year part doesn't really matter for compatibility - it's so you can see when it came out)
I've been running XXJVK for the past few days to test it out (on Continuum 4 + Onix 2.0.3), but among the others, ZSJPG seemed to give me the best performance.
Jk4 is a good starting modem. It.s an I9000 modem and is compatible with most all roms/kernals. Get stable then start reading the forum posted above. It will make more sense. It works well with firefly.

I have been reading up on lag fixs but I am still lost, I have an Bell Samsung galaxy s i9000m with stock gingerbread I9000UGKG3, I have tried CF-root, speedmod, and SO_zImage_opt_ext_root_V4_8_3 but none worked. I was told by a friend that with the new ROMS you dont need lag fixs any more. Is this true and also i ran quadrant 3 times and got 996,1051, and 1009. If any one has gotten their Bell I9000m lag fixed could you let me know what you used?
Just flash some kernel (I suggest Semaphore as it works best for me), download & install CF's ext4 app (use search if you want to find it) and you are good to go.
First upgrade your firmware.... I have a i9000m but use jvz pda, kg3 modem and csc. Then flash the latest semaphore or some other kernel. Without lagfix you will be around 2000 on quadrant... With around 2800+...

thank you guys for the replys expecially around X-mas. I updated to CM& and everything worked fine but it kept telling me that it was in roaming mode so I tried to flash the ugkg3 modem with ODIN, placed it under PHONE woth nothing else selected. BUt it soft bricked my phone, So I tried Milkys 1.3 but I got the same roaming problem, I didnt try to updated the modem those. Because of the roaming problem I flashed stock froyo and speedmod-kernel-k13c-500hz.tar and lag fix worked with 1300 quadrant scores. I wish I knew how to flash the ugkg3 modem properly because CM7 and Milky 1.3 gave me quadrant scores of over 2000. If anyone has free time to give me instructions on modem flashing I would reallly apreciate it. or is there an overclock for froyo that will still keep my lagfix?
I haven't used cm7 much but I'm pretty sure you have to flash the modem for cm7 as a zip in cwm. There is a thread on here somewhere with all the modems as zip files including the kg3 modem which would be best for you. Heres the link to the modems for cwm. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1158783

Bell phones are famous for having a ****ty Internal SD Card. You might not want to ruin the life of the SD Card by using lagfixes. If I was in your place, I would live with the lag instead of ruining my phone.
