I know it's purely cosmetics, but cosmetically speaking, if there was a version of compiz that could run on Android with all the settings... I'm thinking smooth rotating desktop cube with 4 virtual desktops vs the current 3-screen swipy desktop... or window animations, etc... with the same silky smooth animation that you get from compiz in ubuntu.... Just imagining this on Android... all the iPhone users jaws would drop open at the sight of a smooth spinning cube desktop and windows that burst into flames, etc.
So my question to the devs... I am not a developer... Is this dream of mine of a Android-Compiz app at all possible?
It's possible, but I've heard that there is NO hardware acceleration on the G1 at the moment. Everythings being rendered with software.
Also, Compiz wouldn't be worth the battery life. Yes, it's sexy, but remember that this is a phone. I wouldn't trade what little battery life we already have for that.

Umm you're wrong about hardware acceleration, it certainly does have it, just take a look at the demo app qualcomm made to show off the chipset. That said, it's a PHONE. If you can manage to get all the compiz effects working smoothly on a 528MHz single core computer with 192MB of RAM and a really crappy onboard graphics chip then sure, it'll work(i.e. no, this phone has nowhere near the processing power needed to have compiz working, hell it doesn't even have full OpenGL, it's OpenGL ES)

<The message you have entered is too short. Please lengthen your message to at least 10 characters.>
480 x 320 screen resolution helps with the prcoessing needs... and compiz is highly configurable... I'll bet if the app (or one inspired by compiz) could be made to run on Android, it would be a matter of adjusting the right modest settings...
People don't buy iPhones for the battery life, and they don't even buy iPhones for the phone. The phone is like the cherry on top. They buy iPhones for the pure eye candy bliss.
All I'm saying is... don't under estimate the value of eye candy in the consumer market, and if Android had a compiz like app it would kill the iPhone on eye candy.
I want windows transitions to explode into flames, or fade in and out, or spin out of sight (similar to the page 1/page 2 transition for the 'toggle settings' app)... I want the desktop to be a rotating cube with 4 to 6 virtual desktops that spins as fast as I can slide my finger across the screen and eventually come to a smooth stop.
Just saying... it would kill the iPhone. Kill it. And it would sell a lot of G1s.
Doesn't compiz require x-windows to work?

Exactly, I had the same question.
What is the android window environment? It's not an x-windows, is it?
Good question, I don't know... but even so, seems like there could be a way to do it.
Like the existing swipey desktop... if it could be made into a revolving cube with 4 sides. And then to add widgets to any of the 4 virtual desktops (in the same way that we have 3 virtual desktops now)
I ask this all from a very humble, non-developer position... Just wanted to plant the seed in case there were any developers who thought it might be possible.
Android runs on the framebuffer -- there is no X.
The hardware acceleration for graphics is being used (videos wouldn't play without it, for instance). Comparatively, it's probably something like an old TNT graphics card (but with hardware acceleration for h264 and such).
There's a tiny chance in hell it could pull off very basic compiz features... but it would hose the system... (and require that you run X -- which would require you installing your own software base separate from and without Android).
No one's going to put in the effort for methinks, especially when it would so cripple the phone.

My thoughts exactly. Another thing I thought of is that the vast majority of compiz effects have to do with windows and the G1 doesn't really have separate windows so I don't see how it would work. Desktop Cube might be possible and maybe some fancier animation for bringing up programs but aside from that, I don't even see what compiz effects would be applicable.
I think Cube Desktop (with rotation speed determined by how fast your finger slides across the screen) and windows transitions (burn, spin, flip, fade, slide etc) would be a great place to start!
Well since android is OPEN SOURCE we could create a compiz for android using the window management libraries that we will also need to create and build this ontop of cyanogenmod
The cube animation is offered in rogros82's home replacement on the market called GDE, I'M CURRENTLY USING IT, the best home replacement app to date!
Have to agree there aren't many of the compiz effects that would apply to the Android world. Cube/Sphere desktop & window animations are really about it. As far as that goes GDE (launcher replacement) does most of what makes sense to adopt from compiz. I have been using it for about a week & it uses 2% battery on average. The application dock it comes with is nice too.
If someone wanted to look into making their own compiz-like effects, You could start by digging around OMS code to see how they got cube and all working. Like I said though most of it has been done already, and is just a few bucks on the market.

You beat me to it. GDE is a great app though. Being able to switch themes easily is also a nice feature.
GDE running now looks great.!
eats my battery i think but nice 2 have
Well I know the Samsung Behold 2 has an inside cube animation effect with it's home/launcher but I wouldn't know how to pull it from the SB2 and port it to the Dream.
That's just an idea for the devs...
GO Launcher EX
GO Launcher EX has the cube animations built in it's effects for home screen and app drawer.. It works well
So does ADW EX.
Great way to bring a thread back from the grave...

The ZTE Avid N9120 has this cube. As you add apps, the cube expands the total number of sides it has .
Metropcs offers this phone via best buy and other sources.. worth every penny.
You can extract the cube to a desktop and add it to every phone on earth.
How Awesome Would This Be?!
Compiz on the Galaxy Note 3 or 4 and the Galaxy Edge!? With some special effects that run down the edge of the Edge. That would be fantastic! I personally love cosmetic stuff. Themes, status bar mods from xuimod, or Wanam Exposed. Now if someone could rebuild compiz with burn and cube and wave and wobbly windows! Let me just include one more exclamation point to express my enthusiasm!
Hi guys,
I was thinking the other day about the upcoming Sony-Ericsson Xperia X10, and how cool and different the interface was. This got me thinking.... why couldn't the OSS community produce something like this!
It seems that there are many different and innovative UI's available - XBox360 NXE, PS3, OSX iPhone etc. They all have merits and downsides, but each gives a unique experience.
Given all this, couldn't we come up with a new-age UI for Android, instead of the plan same-old one we have on AOSP now. Somthing which has animation, effects, sexyness etc
This post is to try and see what people would like to see in "Android 3.0", which obviously doesn't exist yet, but I think you get the picture.
well I can think of alot of ideas..but one to start off would be : complete customizeability i.e. customizations on the go such as editing of separate widget elements/colors etc...layout edits/saves/export-imports...different looks/UI styles not just one core style with customizations....
Being a fan of the interface style of ccyrowski's Interface on his rom and it appears discontinued i wondered if any of the devs had any intention or would consider continuing the manilla style interface of the rom on theirs if not would also be interested if i could find an apk with the UI setup. Cant knock the message and email setup on it as well as the near seemless intigration of facebook. appreciate any replies i can get in advance and if this is in the wrong section i apologize ahead of time. Figured best place as would prefer a rom with it built in over the apk and havent got the hang of cooking android roms yet, lot trickier then Winmo lol.

are you asking for an apk that installs the sense UI? that is not going to happen... sense UI is like blur and such. its a specialized type of "overlay" for android. think of it as the rims and tires to a vehicle. it just adds to things. for the NEW sense UI check out eugene373 espresso rom. its the newest out and stable enough for you to at least try.
Hey guys found this over at android spin. I think it looks pretty damn cool. I just wonder how piratical it will be for day to day use. I mean we can always use more software to complicate our UI.

Whoa! I'm excited for this, if the implementation turns out as smoothly as it looks.
It's like Sense: The Sequel.

you mean Sense's ugly cousin. Sense all day everyday! brings out the color in my screen
Of course in taking closer looks it's important to separate WOO SHINY EYECANDY from... actually useful.
E.G. will this make my device better, or just get in the way?
In terms of that it's hit and miss. But I do like, for instance, the means of setting the alarm clock (why go into a different screen? This solution seems quick and intuitive), and the 'folding' UI elements - such as the SMS widget, etc. If you don't need them, they fold out of the way. One problem I had with Sense is that most every widget commands the full screen, not leaving me space for much else, regardless of whether or not I'm using the widget at the time.
The widget 'fan' is interesting but I think I prefer the typical 'card' view. The ability to easily drag widgets and shortcuts directly to specific screens is certainly a time saver.
I'm curious to see where this will go in its final iteration -- much like concept cars, everything looks shiny and pretty, but the final product ends up stripping out a lot of the shiny pretty eyecandy in lieu of more practical, intuitive fare.
Good UI design, after all, should be transparent.
ide take this "ugly cousin" over sense any day
+1 Sense is to bulky and doesn't fare well for everyday use. The screens taken for the video were taken fron a MT3G so hopefully we will see that level of smoothness from 1st gen android devices TAT Home is just one of a ton a exciting new things that came out at MWC, cant wait for the beta to drop.
Here is some stuff from an email reply I got from TAT.
We are currently in alfa and expect to reach beta in a couple of weeks.
After that, we will slowly but surely start to roll out the preview to some of the 17,000 people who've signed up so far,
starting with specific Android versions and screen resolutions as we won't target all of them in the first version.
If your are lucky and make it to the list of testers, you'll hear from us in a month or so
I don't remember what forum it was but someone also posted an email reply and they stated that the Nexus1 screen res is supported at start. I also think the G1 should be gtg because it looks like a HTC Hero in the vid.
Can you do it?
Folks over at sgs2 have been trying to port it over for quite sometime now. I doubt you will see it anytime soon. Besides do you really want sense?

Yes, I want Sence I've had so many HTC with Sense and like it especially 3.5.

Do i want sense? Yes, Its great! Touchwiz is not as refined.
Sense features i miss
The great Audio player, Better than power amp (In my opinion)
Fantastic lockscreen (customizable)
Great People, weather and calendar widgets
Perfect Dialpad
Well designed SMS and email client
And all the other sense themed widgets.
I know i lot of these features can be added with apps from the market, But none i have found so far have the Tidy uniform look of sense. Parts of touchwiz look like they have been made by a colour blind monkey! Also one of my biggest gripes with touchwiz is the lockscreen (poor animation, lack of customization and sometimes unresponsive) If i try to use a different lockscreen, NoLED stops working, which i like because the lack of a physical notification LED.
So far i have tried-
SPB shell 3D - expensive, and still needs some work for are device, but looks cool. More looks over substance
Launcher Pro - Its OK, just basic
Go laucher, Go Locker, Go Contacts - Good attempt, just not as refined and not optimized for the screen resolution of the note
The note, hardware wise, is the best Phone (yes it is a phone) I have owned. Personally i feel touchwiz needs some work.
Now others may love touhwiz, So i do not want this thread to turn into a fanboi thread of either way! This is just my opinion, its not intended to irritate anybody.
For one, i would love to see a sense rom for such great hardware!
Overall i like the note, and with any luck ICS will null my gripes.
Sorry to OP if i have hijacked this thread, Just sparked all my (common) sense thoughts off at once
Also best place for questions is the Q&A section.
Take it easy

For me TouchWiz and Sense is same ****. Go Launcher is normal. Holo is the best launcher I ever use. I hope samsung will not forget or ignore about this.
It was hard to get used to touchwiz after Htv Sense for first few days. I tried to find similar widgets to make it more look and function like htc sense. Then as more I get used to touchwiz the less I hated it. If I had a choice I would still prefer htc sense as already mentioned it is pretty well designed graphically and functionally out of the box. But I discover some touchwiz features missing in htc sense too. For instance uninstalling apps right from the app drawer is awesome just as practical as uninstalling on iphone. Samsung touchwiz seems to have it all as separate widgets and os wise but they are not as a whole package in terms of visual integrity and not as functional as sense considering each app separately. Some of features like remote tracking is not even in default rom unless you add them urself later which takes some research to even find out it's even possible. HTC sense serves it all as a whole package , even the navigating software you can purchase it right from the htc location widget and it is adapted to rest of widgets. Contact integration from different accounts like facebook, google, twitter etc is merged automatically on htc sense by choice which is missing on touchwiz. You have to add your htcsense user id and pass only once on Sense and it is recognized automatically on related apps like "htc likes" but on touchwiz you have to add your samsung account each time again and again for apps like "samsung apps" etc... Considering outstanding hardware features of Gnote I have no intension to go back to htc just for sense as none of their devices are even close to gnote recently but I would definitely like to see samsung engineers put more effort on improving touchwiz in terms of compatible graphic design, integrated all-in features , user friendly ui to make it more competitive against htc sense which seems to be only superiority of htc devices still left.

Im surprised it took 4 months for this kind of thread to pop up. I will never understand the ram hogging hype. It reminds me of iphone users bragging about a million apps so they can swipe the screen from left to right doing nothing.
But all in all we are using android which gives us plenty of options. If a clone of sense doesnt work. Theres always that option of making it yourself.
I swore launcher pro widgets were a exact replica of htc sense. Matched up with a theme and it was good to go. Plus that customizable widget app that did more things then htc lockscreen. But im guessing this isnt good enough.
Sense used to be great and now it's just too bloated
Thanks for the responses. I guess its each to here own. Now i have been assigned to this forum, i shall put this thread in its correct place.
Thread Moved To Q&A
sense just has the best dialer avaible. the touchwiz dialer just doesnt find if i search for "uiop" and there is clearly a "qwertz uiop" in the contacts. sense dialer finds that.
aldo the touchwiz keyboard is odd... long press makes caps lock chars... sense gives you signs like "+ -*& %". i solved that with swiftkey x... but for the dialer theres no replacement right now. ex dialer is the closest but it needs 10 seconds or more to load the call log. thats not acceptable.
i like that the phone features of a phone are excelent, not just satisfiyng.
Why are there two of the exact same thread..?
From the exact same person..
Sense is an abomination, why would you want to buy the fastest phone available just to bog it down with bloatware, reducing it to a level of performance of a 1GHz single-core? But, to each his own - sadly, no way to make a Sense rom for a non-HTC device, if only for legality reasons. Sense is, at least partly, proprietary code.
Sense is the best out of the box android UI. Period.
I've just recently got my Galaxy Note and I'll admit I do miss the sense from my HTC Desire HD. Personally, it seems more intuitive when it comes to shortcuts, integration and it is visually appealing. However, I know it slows down the phone as it did that to my HTC Desire HD, especially when I updated to the latest sense. It's very laggy and the amount of animations are completely unnecessary. I don't need an animation of the page swivelling onto the screen when unlocking the phone. I'll miss the ease of access to certain things, but I want to get use to touchwiz.
There is an option to get Sense 3.0 or 3.5

Sometimes HD2 with sense onboard acts smoother than Note with TW.
So if you want Sense, HD2 is your perfect choice.
Its hardly possible to port Sense to Note or other non-HTC devices.
