Eclair, Froyo, or Gingerbread for speed? - G1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My wife has CM6 on her G1 and it works fine, though it feels sluggish and apps take a little bit to respond. I've tried several Froyo roms and CM6 seems to be the best of the bunch, but I want to find her something more responsive. Is CM7 even worth considering? Common sense suggests it would be even more sluggish since the sys reqs are higher, but I've read some people saying it's faster. And in any event, is it generally true that an Eclair-based rom (like CM 5.0.8?) is going to be faster than any Froyo rom?
Thanks guys!

Donut is the fastest, but Eclair is good for both stability and speed. The older builds are generally more optimized, faster, and have less functions (trade off).

As always ... it depends. For me CM6.1 was faster than any CM5 I had on my phone, probably even faster than the 1.6 stock donut. But there is also the difference that for the newer ROMs you can increase the size of the RAM available, which helps very much. So you have the choice ...

For me FROYO is having good responce...with official AOSP 2.2 from ezterry.
but if you like eclair go for Superbad 1.7 from htcclay the best one for eclair.

Hmmm. I may be on a fool's errand but I'm trying to see if there's a Tom for the G1 that will make it feel like my Nexus One. Should I stop trying?

Try Froyo by Laszlo, its quite fast.

As I said on your other post, SparksMod 2.1 has been the best to me.

I tried all Eclair you mentioned.
It's definitely, KK's Vanilj Eclair.
It doesn't have bells or whistles but you can selectively add them.
DZO's odexed donut. works amazing, fastest build I've used yet
My take on the available odex'd Eclair builds after installing all of them:
Myn's Warm Eclair RLS1: It's functional and fast out of the box, but it seems like it slows down after a few days. Biggest annoyances are dialer/messaging being slow for me.
Incubus26Jc's Super Eclair 2.1: Fast out of the gate and stays fast. Few glitches/bugs due to the additional stuff added, but if you need a build with some goodies use this one.
VaniljEclair RLS6: Fast, stable, and functional. If you don't mind having a bare minimum Android install go with this one.
Fastest is Myn's eclair. But I voted for Myn's donut. Being fast doesn't mean being stable. As for me, sometimes being stable is more important than being fast. I hate that some android builds skip my phone calls, or freeze if someone calls me while I listening to pandora etc. There is a lot of bugs still. Right now everyone concentrated on speed... what's the purpose of speed, if device is buggy? I'd like to see more STABLE and well-tested builds rather than fastest.
Take my word for it, I have tried many. nothing compares to DZO's odexed donut.
Every phone might be a little different, but I have yet to hear anyone complain about performance on DZOs odexed donut.
It might not have all the flash and frills of the other builds, but it is the most reliable and by far the fastest. At least that has been my experience.
Myn's donut is what I use. I odexed it myself. Works great.
Didn't try DZO's Donut, but it is so obvious that Donut is faster than Eclair on Vogue!

I second this. After trying froyo for a week, I couldn't take the slowness. Dzo build is so much faster. I hope gmail sync is fixed in donut.
I haven't done much, since I only run from an SD Card I expect the slowness. But as far as STABILITY goes (my biggest concern - I don't want my phone locking up on me all the time) I think Myn's Warm Donut has treated me the best so far.

you are forgetting one- FROYO.
incubis and dzo are putting out the releases faster than i can flash em- and they are doing nothing but getting better and better- IMO froyo is the best thus far

I second Froyo... Some of the builds have been shaky, but the custard crew has really got it hummin on the lastest builds. I'm running the odexed July 3rd version and I'm lovin it!
+++ For Froyo.. By far the best, fastest, most stable.. And a very clean install to build on.. A+ all the way
I'm going back to windows unless I can figure out wifi and usb tether soon, I have used Incubus froyo, dzo froyo, myn warm donut.
Wifi won't start at all, I have had very limited success tethering with a market app (it's VERY slow).
I just thought I would say this because there is nobody able to help me and I just assumed tethering would work with android natively, but it does not.

Is the current Froyo faster than Dzo's donut? I found Super Froyo RLS7 to be much slower than Dzo's donut. Has the incoming call delay been fixed on Froyo?

Since nobody answered, I tested the Super Froyo RLS9 myself and compared it with Dzo's donut.
1. RLS9 is significantly faster than RLS7.
2. RLS9 is noticeably slower than Dzo's donut. (For example, it takes extra ring for the phone to actually ring. App opens slower.)
3. Froyo looks prettier than donut.
I would like to try dzo's donut release listed in:

go back then, it really isnt just a natively built-in feature the usb driver needs to be troubleshot and rewritten, if its that big of an issue for you ask dzo or one of the other devs what you need to get started with fixing it.
but if you dont want to do that switch back to windows mobile, because our devs are working their butts off to bring froyo to us so dont make it sound like nobody is trying to fix things.
Tethering works just fine for me in Myn's donut and now DZO's donut that I am currently running. I am running PDAnet and have used both SD automount and SD dual mount. I have read that not using a dualmount/automount program can cause issues with tethering. Hope it helps.

Is there a 2.1 build faster then Cyanogen 5.0.8

Hi guys, I was wondering if there was a Android 2.1 build faster then and as stable as Cyanogen 5.0.8? It feels alittle sluggish on my phone.
Thanks
Why are you using Eclair? Froyo was released ages ago... I'd recommend trying Jubeh's Froyo ROM.
is it faster though? I don't want to upgrade if it's going to use more of my memory.
Thanks
To be honest i've found SuperE to be more reliable than any current froyo rom. Ditto to chromatic
Sent from my U20i using XDA App
Well if you want speed you're going to need to go back a few months to the old OE roms, those were at easily at donut speeds, just that a bunch of stuff didn't work (3D, camcorder, launcher2). I remember those being amazing. Cromatic 3.9.1.1 is pretty cool though if you want a more recent, fully functioning rom. Make sure to fully wipe (or at least cache) if you want it to feel fast. I'm running that right now, I broke something I didn't want to fix on one of the CM6 nightlies, so I've been running a nandroid of chromatic and it runs pretty damn good.

[Q] Should I upgrade to 2.3

I've been running CM6 for a few months. I'm pretty happy with it but I wouldn't mind trying something new.
Is 2.3 worth trying? What advantages does it have over 2.2? Is it faster, have more useful features, does it look a lot cooler, etc? And which one do you guys recommend - AOSP's Gingerbread or CM7?
2.3 is way better than cm6! Its alot snappier and comes with more feautres.soaps is really nice since its a small build but with a big punch! Try it, you wont be dissapointed!

2.2 is pretty stable. If you want to run on the latest releases, hit the nightlies. That's what I'm on.
I am running Aosp 2.3.3 and it is so quick and smooth. Way better than CM 6.1
I tried CM7 for a few days, but like Aosp better.
Aosp 2.3 CM7 is the best thing to happen to the HeroC!

Best ROM for HTC Dream ?

I installed Cyanogen Mod 6.1 Magpie on my HTC G1 Dream.
Almost all applications are installed on the SD Ext partition.
It's deadly slow. I can't bare it.
Do you have a better, faster, more stable ROM to suggest?
I need SD Ext partition support.
I crawled the forum, but I am new to Android and feel lost.
I am now good with adb, rom partitionning and rom flashing though.
I always wipe everything before flashing (including system).
Give me your best advise please.
I really think that froyobylaszlo is the best. Stable and very fast ROM =)
Latest version of EzGingerbread is excellent and stable as a rock (I have been using it for a couple of weeks now). Also pretty fast and great battery life. On 2G I am almost getting 2 days out of it.
It has the latest Gingerbread version and Ezterry is still around to support the rom.
froyobylaszlo looks promissing, fast and stable.
I will give it a try and tell you what I think of it.
After reading the EzGingerbread thread, I think I prefer to try the froyobylaszlo first.

Depends also much on your requirements. FbL will run smooth without the "RAM-hack", i.e. installing the 0013d/2708 combo. Running EzGingerbread without it will be a pain, but if you install that combo, it runs very very well. I think it compares well to the original 1.6, but having much more features
froyobylazslo and ezginbread are by far my two most favorite roms, but you will have some lags with either one here and there. so if this bothers you you'll have to go back to eclair or donut to get the absolute best speed on a g1. just remember you will be missing out on a ton if you do this! so i say try them both and hope the lags wont be to much to bare.
Thats a coincidence, because I have been playing with my Dreams and flashing a bunch of oldies but goodies. Last week I flashed CM 6 Magpie - same as yours. I flash ohsaka super wipe before flashing magpie. but the first thing I do after it boots is 1. enable nonmarket apps and 2. go to cyanogenmod settings and allow for application moving automatically and then 3. install root explorer, go to system/app and wipe out all the junk all wallpapers, youtube gmail email everything just keep the bare minimum and at the end I have like 6 apps to play with then it is a very workable ROM, and also install cache for root and enable to clear every hour - and it has been running nice and simple ever since. Granted its not my daily driver, but anyway Fierat really made a big difference with magpie...
Froyo is weird on the G1. Gingerbread is much more natural you just have to get creative with which apps you install. EZGingerbread is nice... its more of a novelty.
But my absolute most favorite ROM ever for the G1 is SuperBad by htcClay and 2nd is SuperE by Buchacher. Those are the best roms when you are actually using it as a daily driver.
Although I did manage with The Dudes Cupcake for almost 6 months as my work phone, and its all a matter of how committed you are to seeing it through.
FroyobyLaszlo is the most capable Froyo Rom for the G1 for me. But I really never liked Froyo, it was only a short period of time in between CM5 and CM7 which blew away CM6.
I recommend my froyo rom. Its quite fast (better than cm6, I've never tried fbl so I can't compare..)
It (unlike fbl, cm6, and other roms froyo or lower) is still getting updates. And ive recently started caring about security do expect changes soonish

true that! I have found that EzGingerbread 1.0 to be probably the fastest/most stable rom I have tried (If you set it up the way it says in the thread and install the older versions of facebook and maps as suggested). SuperE was not bad but not my favorite. I would avoid Froyo roms. I have never has one run well, including the official T-Moble for MT3G OTA update.

?... novelty..? I might have agreed if you were talking about Ice Cream Sandwich because that is probably too slow, but EzGingerbread is not a novelty for sure.
I have used it for the last 3 releases and especially 1.0 is ready for every day use. Everything works very smooth. Almost all roms I have used the last few years had some issues (I bought my 1st G1 in 2008), I have to find the first issue with EzGingerbread in combination with the recommended Radio-2.22.28.25 and SPL 1.33.0013d
No forced closes, fast, etc.

I used it from one of the early alphas (the first one with autokerkel) and I've had a similar experience. There were bugs in early builds (if you didnt expect that, you must be crazy), bit I've had no problems with it. Was my daily for most of the time I used my mytouch
DREAMTeam Froyo is a best ROM.
DREAMTeam Froyo by TVall is best. I have been using with Titanium backup and ext2 and with custom mtd
Froyobylaszlo and GingerYoshi are the best
According to my experience Froyobylaszlo is the best for performance but I ended up using GingerYoshi because it has all languages supported (Arabic in my case). So if you only need English go ahead with Froyobylaszlo but if you want another language you might want to check if it's included first. EzGingerBread does not include all languages either. GingerYoshi's performance is not bad at all if you use LauncherPro and it includes all language packs.
Laszlo's release is pretty buggy from my experience. I would stick to one of the many gingerbread releases, dream team froyo, or my ROM after I can get out the next alpha.

I'm running ezGingerbread right now and am going to test out the newest version... but I think I already decided I want a more minimized version. I literally delete every app that can be deleted and using my phone as a daily driver mostly for messaging (SMS) and listening to music. I don't even have an internet flat. And I remember my 1.6 original ROM was way faster than this now. And I don't use/ need almost all of the new features, since my G1 runs so slow and my battery is old and drains so fast.
So, my question are, are the 1.6 roms the fastes out there?
And which roms still are being maintained other than ezGingerbread?
Thanks so much guys!
FroyobyLazlo 5.2 hands down is the Best CM6 Rom.
CM7 Magpie is the best CM7 Rom.
I don't use AOSP Roms, but they'll always have the best speed. Also most free Ram.
Personally FBL, with a Gingerbread Theme. Ext4. All apps to SD, and Use the lastest Froyo Kernel. But FBL has crazy speed with it's kernel, but it's reboots every couple of hours.
Mt debloated Cm7.1 Rom GingerbreadbyNomy (RC1) With the latest GB kernel is worth trying. I'm not saying it's the fastest, but it has like 75% free Ram.

In my opinion donut ROMS (Superd 1.11 with Elegance (BETA) 1.1.1 theme) are the best for daily ROM, you can have "heavy" apps running on background without missing sms, fc's, random reboots, lags, incoming call instantly, etc. but if you want the newest features ezGingerbread it's the best for me and your G1 will have around 30mb of free ram every time

[Q] Fastest G1 Rom

Hey
I am giving my g1 to mom. I got a nexus s for $35 (I Know.......Awesome). I wanted a rom that is very fast stable and run basic apps like opera mini gmail and friendcaster with ease. I was hoping for a donut rom with 2708 kernel.
I dont want FBL. It is the best g1 Rom but it get slow after time and my mom in not a patience person to wait for a app.
Also is there a way to lock dialer in memory.
Thanks a lot guys

I switched from FBL to the Dreamteam Froyo ROM a little while back and the difference was incredibly noticeable. You're right that FBL seems to slow down, but even when I first installed FBL it was still slower than the Dreamteam ROM is now. I've noticed no slow down in the week or so I've been using it, very impressed. I was considering going back to Donut just to get better performance, but this has impressed me enough to stick with Froyo and keep all of its benefits.
