Is there any way to get permanent soft keys? This is easily the Nooks greatest weakness. It's outright cumbersome to navigate at the moment. If there is a way to get a menu bar at the bottom of the screen with the standard buttons that is ALWAYS on the screen that would be outstanding. In effect, it would be identical to having hardware touch sensitive keys as on the Droid Incredible - the only difference is that they would be on the screen. I don't mind losing the real estate if it means intuitive navigation.
have you tried button savior?

Button savior is pretty awesome, and far better than softkeys IMO.

With the advent of Nookie Froyo and rumors of CM7 only one thing makes me Pissed off as heck. HARD BUTTONS!!!!! Of course, we could map the volume buttons for these things, but I have a proposal/wish (Since I can't program --_--)
Is there anyone who could make a app so that long pressing a volume button would bring up or lower the volume, and tapping them slightly would trigger the back button or menu button? Or vice versa?
I think this would kill our needs for soft-keys or any annoying launcher stuff. Just a wish. tell me if this is possible plx
or... double tap them --_--
I don't program either, but I was just thinking about alternative methods too, since I find soft keys annoyingly unelegant as well. I like the remapping of the hard volume keys for long presses idea. Another option might be to take a play from the jailbroken iphone book where Activator can launch programs or perform system actions with gestures (swiping in from the top, or tapping the volume indicator box after voluming up/ down, etc) - sort of like how swiping left on the nook status bar goes back or how swiping down the left side of the screen in fbreader changes the brightness of the display. Could be a system wide action where swiping left at the bottom if the screen regardless of if the status bar is visible would go back while swiping right would invoke the menu...

hmm.. well, I guess I'll just have to stick with soft buttons for now. {presses the nook color home button to death}
Several Apps That I Use...
Have gestures that allow the functions that you folks mentioned. For example, Aldiko has a great brightness adjust by swiping down one side of the screen, and Dolphin HD has a lot of gesture-activated commands.
I'm not a programmer but some bright dev out there might be able to come up with the appropriate calls to allow gestures for volume - what about a poll?
Hi guys, do you have the same feeling as mine? O4x's soft keys are too close to the bottom of the main screen. As a result, sometimes during text input, home button is unintentionally hit.
Is there any solution to this?

Happens to me all the time. I have no solution this far. Maybe one could make a mod to have the on-screen buttons as Google intended and disable the hardware soft keys, but I don't have any experience in modding.
Not sure about the mechanism of the hotkeys. If they're touch panel like (or even they're just part of the main capacitive touch screen), the best solution IMO is to reduce the effective touch area of each button. Just make them slightly larger than the led icons.
But this is not what CM can do I think. It should be some driver code change from LG...

i use swiftkey and increase the key height and it is so much easy to key now without hitting home when i use the spacebar. Another alternative is to setup the direction arrows underneath the spacebar but i feel the previous approach is suitable for me not to hit home key 99.9% all the time :cyclops:
Happen quite a lot at first,
After a mth with this phone. Seldom happen anymore.
Will get used to it

Nice solution, thanks!!!
If you think the current on-screen buttons is already the best solution then perhaps you wont agree with me. But anyways I along with alot of other people dont like to accidentally press the home button AND the multi-tasking button due to its disruptive nature especially now that in 4.2 it throws you out of the app basically. Mapping the home button to a long press really isnt a solution its annoying to do it all the time and is simply not intuitive.
My solution is something thats not done so far but I really think its possible.
A center hardware home button. Double press acts as a multi-tasking button.
2 tiny OLED screens on the sides of the home button so we can have adaptive navigation buttons alongside a hardware home button.
One of the OLED screens shows the back button and the other one dynamically shows the menu button whenever needed. When not used the OLED screen wont consume any power at all unlike LCD.
And ofcourse this also keeps open the possibility to customize and map whatever buttons you want to like if someone wants to have a single click task switcher they can still have it.
Another huge advantage of having a hardware home button is the ease of waking up the device which is under appreciated a bit I feel. Anyways thats my 2 cents.
Having a home button would be a problem to create a uniform Google experience, since every manufacturer would have their own button design. Also, physical buttons has a life expectancy of approximately 2 years (just try pressing an iPhone 4 button).
Also, Galaxy S3 has a home button. Choice.

And yet we dont have a unified solution. HTC and samsung the 2 biggest players continue to do their own thing. Another point to note is that on-screen buttons dont allow for their to be a "gap" between the screen and navigation buttons unless ofcourse you want to waste massive amounts of screen estate. Having more gap reduces accidental presses.
But S3 has static capacitive buttons so you lose out on the freedom that the solution I proposed offers. The menu button certainly needs to be dynamic so you know when its needed and when its not.
I was really excited to have phone with on screen buttons...until I had a phone with on screen buttons. I definitely noticed the loss of screen real estate coming from the HOX to the Nexus 4. Expanded desktop is nice, but not very convenient. I really like the style Samsung has adapted. My friend has a Galaxy S3 and I love being able to turn on the display with the home button. Of course, on screen buttons are mappable, which is nice.

What i do...
Use on screen buttons when navigating and when I'm in an app for a long time i use the expanded desktop with PA.. after I'm done I go back to normal.
I would rather have an option to swipe to the left to hide the soft buttons.

Hello all,
Ok, so I've gone to the end of my wits here. So long story short, I've been using a Galaxy Nexus for a long time and have grown accustomed to stock android and the navbar buttons.
As a result, I've tried to get my One to run with a nav-bar, problem is so far, only Paranoid android seems to let me do that.
* Any stock GPE ROM by default doesn't have it
* I've tried editing build.prop in GPE: "qemu.hw.mainkeys=0" but that doesn't do anything. Reading up, I think that only changes how the menu buttons works, rather than the Navbar?
* Root programs like virtual Navbars cover up the bottom of the screen.
* I've tried Xposed scripts, which also don't work.
Have I missed anything? While the PA roms more ore less work, the speakers are noticeably softer and poorer in sound quality... i don't have a working IR blaster and GPE roms work much smoother... I'd even settle with a HTC sense rom as long as I can get the Navbar working.
Thanks
Just curious as to the point of having physical keys and on-screen keys at the same time. Seems like a waste of screen real estate, and redundant as well
Use "ultimate dynamic navbar". A quick search will lead you to the devs thread which offers a free version with a decent amount of customization and a paid version with many more features. You're welcome

From memory, on the gpe, we don't have an option to hide the three dot menu, and it takes up the bottom section of the screen. If that's the case I'd rather it be the nav bar which serves more purpose.
Regarding dynamic navbar, that's the one that I mention that cuts into the bottom of the screen (sometimes it covers buttons if I leave it on permanently), but seeing that I'm running out of options, I'm going to force myself to get used to the hiding navbar. Might be a nice middle ground.

What about Pie Controls? Try LMT Launcher, it doesn't waste space, is highly customizable and is perfect for HTC One, because there is no capacitive button below the screen in the middle.

Hi,
I wonder if the location of the soft nav buttons in landscape mode can be changed to be on the other side? Being right handed, I find it very unnatural and would very much prefer them to have on the other side, but it seems not to be easy without root, or did I miss something?
Thanks!
You want the nav buttons on the left?
I have not seen that done on any platform.
