Has anyone purchased a reliable alternative wallcharger, one where you don't have to use the USB cable to connect with?
If so, any recommendations?
As I understand, certain chargers don't work very well with the Nexus S because of the different voltages. (This was an issue early on when people were reporting overheating, or bad charges with their laptops, using different USB cables, or using different wallchargers, etc).
If anyone can shed some light or provide some recommendations, would appreciate it. I don't want the cumbersome and hassle of unplugging my USB cable every time I travel when I need a wallcharger.

i use the ones from ebay
you just take the battery out, and charge it on the wall
meanwhile you use another battery
that is perfect
and the wall charger has option for you to plug in the USB cable to charge both the phone and additional battery at the same time

Do these chargers effect the stock battery in anyway? I just want to charge my stock battery. As I said, I've heard/read that different chargers and volts can damage/overheat the battery.
I'd also prefer to not have to shut down my phone to charge it. But I will consider this alternative. Thanks. Any particular links?
Anyone else, who might have recommendations? All I'm finding are third party alternatives and none of them are truly meant for the Nexus S. They'll be like a "Motorola" charger which happens to share the same size USB port opening.

it works fine with the OEM battery, i've been using it for a month
and the voltage + mAh is actually lower than other phones, so no there's no chance for it damaging your battery

Fantastic. If I really can't find one that just plugs directly into the phone, I'll purchase it (this one: http://www.cellphoneshop.net/m850desktop.html?CAWELAID=522866831)
Appreciate the advice/help, y'all.
How about this? http://www.bolddepot.com/smartphone-experts-micro-usb-travel-charger/5A17A3061.htm
It's a blackberry charger, but it discharges 100-240 volts, which I'm reading should be okay for the Nexus S, correct?
Allgamer, or anyone?
I'd prefer to just plug directly from wall plug to my phone without having to shut down and take out battery, if possible.
Bump. Anyone can answer my question below?

My blackberry charger makes my nexus s go nuts. When I plug it in the screen doesn't work properly and it corrupts the filesystem. With my dad's phone it manifested as the phone calling random numbers from his contacts list and mixing up his contact name and numbers. On my phone it started blocking calls from certain numbers. A reflash fixed both of our phones...but I won't use the blackberry charger again.
My wife uses a blackberry & I just realised that the slots are the same.
Checked the power input/output and it is identical to that of the NS.
Nexus S
Input 100-240V~50-60Hz 0.15A
Output 5.0V 0.7A
Blackberry
Input 100-240V~50-60Hz 10-20VA
Output 5.0V 700mA
The bold/italic is is the only thing different that I have noticed. Maybe some tech guy can tell if it matters. Anyway, I have gone ahead and used it and pray that it will all be well

The Blackberry current output is lower. The range is from 0.083A to 0.1A. Or conversely, the VA rating for the Nexus S is higher at 15-36VA.
The best I have found is the wall charger that comes with the Logitech Performance MX mouse.

Hi,
I just stuck here, cause I found a thread about fast usb charging. But there is no answers or solutions.
I have many htc devices. It seems that some of them has a problem with 3rd party usb chargers.
My most used device is Universal. It suck a lot of power. THis one doesn't enable usb charging at all, until you put it in sleep mode before pluging the charger.
Anyway, the same issue for Kaiser too.
The problem is, that it doesn't matter how much current is the charger able to deliver. They just use some kind of recognition of original chargers.
What I already measured: Original charger and universal running => takes 1200mA. 3rd party charger or my 5A PSU => Universal/Kaiser sucks just 500mA.
This is fast/slow charge. I found here discussion about 4 and 5 pins shorted??
But WTF which 4 & 5 pin?
http://www.tracyandmatt.co.uk/blogs/index.php/2006/09/10/htc_hermes_usb_connector_pin_config
According to this pinout. It would be 2 GND of Audio side? I'm not sure that original charger use extUSB audio side to charge...? It also could be D & A pins, but I'm afraid to connect 5V to Data- pin.
Anyway, someone here have to know it.
If not, in a few days I'll try all possible combinations and post the results.
Thanks
Shef
I'd also be interested to know about this. When I charge my TYTN II via USB, it takes much longer to charge than if I charge it via the mains charger (I prefer USB since I travel a lot and it's one less charger I need to carry around).
Better still, is it possible to buy a USB cable that will charge at the same rate as the mains charger rather than messing with a USB cable with the associated risks?
Best,
Gary.

a usb port only supplies 500ma, while the wall charger does 1200ma as the OP has measured (although it says 1A at the back of the charger). changing a cable is not gonna superpower up your usb port.
unless maybe you get hold of a forked USB cable, like the one that Seagate Free Agent drives come supplied with... you know, 1 mini USB splitting halfway down to two normal USB plugs.
Worth experimenting with, do you think?

good call.......with a little googling i came up with this
http://www.universaluk.com/acatalog...2_x_Type_A_to_mini_B__USB_2_0__1m__Lindy.html
tried ebay, my brief search came up with lots of unrelated results, so i gave up
I got one of those leads, came with my portable 2.5" hard drive. Just tried the lead on my Tytn 2 and it does charge almost as fast as the mains plug
Success
Ok, so, I tried to experiment.
Here you go.
Usb simple cable 480ma charge.
The same result with Motorola charger.
Motorola charger pins A and B short circuit - 890mA.
That's much better, althrough I suppose it can suck more current then 890mA, but it's significantly better.
THere is also pins data+ and data- short circuited (I don't know if it has effect, but I can't disconnect it in this connector).
Apparently NC (not connected) pin on our pinout schematics definitely is connected.
With % of charged battery it suck less and less current....I suppose it's usual, this should be even driven by ROM.
So, update your cables
It works even with car charger, so no more charger problems...
Shef
Just to be clear - you took a Motorola USB cable and shorted pins A and B (which are which by the way?) and it provides a decent current....
How do you short the pins? I've looked in the end of cable and I can hardly see the pins, let alone short them! What's the trick here or have I missed something?
Thanks,
Gary.

Also interested in how to short the pins. I use Navizon, bluetooth HSDPA tethering, and iGuidance while on the ambulance and even my iGo 3A max rated charger can barely keep up because the tilt wont accept all of the available current.
So have anyone found a way to fast charge our ppc through usb??
Yes, that is correct. Short pins 4 & 5 (4 is normally NC) to enable fast-charging. If you do it correctly, the phone shouldn't pick up tethering, and therefore should not say "PC Connected" or the like..
The TracyAndMatt pinout is wrongly numbered. The pin assignments are correct, but the number/letter scheme they used is incorrect. True ExtUSB pinout translation to their pinout is as follows:
T & M Real ExtUSB
-------------------------------
Pins E D C B A = 1 2 3 4 5
Pins 1 2 3 4 5 6 = 6 7 8 9 10 11
The way I remember is that the corner opposite the angled one is where pin 1 starts (where E is on the T&M pinout) - and they go like most IEC-standard connectors, in a clock-like circular numbering scheme.
Here's a better pinout: http://pinouts.ru/PDA/htc_extUSB_pinout.shtml
Hope this helps!

its the milliamps that is the problem even doubling up with a y splitter does not do much Find a charger with the most milliamps for a faster charge 1.2 amps works best and as far as i know no usb port puts out that much even if they are wired in a series. Many try to sell lower amp chargers they dont even know about it at att. if the screen is off they will charge but not well these phones are energy hogs. I must have at least twenty chargers and messed around with them... the original or one of highest amperage works for me.

What is the maximum mAh recommended for HTC devices? Is it still 1.2 A or more?

There can be no recommended maximum mAh. There can only be a required current, which differs from device to device. Check Ohm's Law. The device determines how much current it draws. If the charger cannot deliver that current, then the charging process can fail in various ways, all undesirable.

I don't know, but probably not. Apple used to use a different signalling scheme involving resistors.
This may be a dumb question. I read in another thread that a charger with less current output may not harm a phone, but it will just take longer to charge. I'm wondering if a blackberry charger rated at 5.0V, 750mAh can work safely on the milestone? The original milestone charger is rated at 5.1V, 850mAh. I haven't tried it yet though...

I use my girlfriend's charger to charge my Milestone all the time. The way I see it, so long as the output is not greater than the Motorola-shipped one, then I should be fine.
I used a friend's Nokia charger multiple times - and it's rated 5V and 1200mA - no damage either.
The Milestone is designed to be content with Moto's 850mA charger - so if a charger CAN deliver more - it doesn't mean the Milestone does receive more.
On the other hand - I did no longterm tests to see if the Milestone CAN charge quicker with a more powerful charger.
Long story short - as long as the charger doesn't exceed 5V (which will be hard to accomplish using an unmodified USB cable - you don't have to worry about anything.
If it fits -> plug it in ;-)
If it's a USB/micro-USB charger, it will work. The current rating on the charger is the maximum it's capable of supplying. It's up to the device how much of that will be drawn.
Well, I have a few experience with charges on my Milestone. In this case, it has no problem for you Milestone...but it will take more time to charge then other charger.
I have posted this before in another thread..
As long as its a USB-Port, you can charge everything that is charged via USB. They are all (basically) the same. Its like plugging your device into the USB-Port in you computer. You wouldnt worry about plugging something in there. Same applies to Car-Chargers.

mh. 12v is very uncommon. Idk, at least here in Germany (more or less whole european union) you dont have to worry about voltages. There is even a EU-Law that all phone charges can be used for every phone (USB-Based).
Sorry i dont know about the situation in T&B.

Either the Charger was violating the USB specifications (if he used a USB cable) or it coincidental used the same plug as Nokia used for their old phones.
I think that is OK, I had used BlackBerry chargers, ZTE chargers and Alcatel.. Different specs, but works OK (some of them slower than others, but are OK).
I think that there is no problem with that, just take a look to charge a phone using the PC and micro usb data cable.. Every coputer give to you different voltages and amp, but always works!

Output Specs
HTC Vivid Charger: 5V, 1A
Blackberry Charger: 5V, 700 mA
It should work, but may take longer to charge. I used several different chargers including blackberry. If you look at computer USB port specs; it is rated at 5V 500ma. and that works fine.
Hope that helps...

I'm about to use a Moto Milestone 1 charger for OB but I'm afraid that it may harm the phone. Both phones are listed with MicroUSB 2. Any tips?
thanks
Don't worry.. it will work Ok, but OB charger has 1000ma, if you use another charger that has let's say 500ma (like USB) it will take 3 hours to charge the phone instead of the regular 45 minutes!
I use a samsung cable directly from USB, the car USB port, a samsung 5530 charger, a LG optimus one charger, and they all worked, with various degrees of effectiveness!
The most useful one is the car's USB port that, even if it cannot keep up with the GPS (it charges slower than the battery drains), it can keep the phone running with 10% loss every hour with screen activated and GPS at the same time! The problem is that I hate radio and don't use CD's that much, and usually end up with the phone depleted before I reach the destination!
Thanks man! Ok I'll check that "ma" thing. BTW is it written on the battery or charger?

Both places; battery specify working and standby V and mA, charger specify the V and mA provider
So you can use almost every different charger if the specs are the same, but be aware of this: don't use a charger with less mA since it can burn the charger
Ma - miliamps.
How many milliamps in 1 watt/volt? The answer is 1000.
I assume you are converting between milliampere and watt/volt.
I never had a burnt charger by the way, that would be very strange considering that the phone is accepting 500ma from the start (that is the USB output on any PC), and I even saw chargers with a power of 2W (SUPER FAST CHARGERS). The Motorola chargers are 850 ma usually, so it should work quite good!
Indeed, it's very strange to have a burnt charger and we don't need to go into an electrical discussion but that happens because of 2 possible things, very high-peak of voltage or prolonged use of under-voltage

Thanks. Printed on my Moto charger is 850mA so I'll rather use it for my OB next time.
BTW, currently I'm using a replacement charger for my OB with a name "super charger" printed "4.5v - 9.5v 800ma"
It's charging at normal duration in fact I'm using it for days. The only problem is that my OB touchscreen freaks out if I use it while that charger is connected. It's obvious when I run the multitouch testing app because touch points run all over the place. Touchscreen goes back to normal if I disconnect the charger. I tested that "super charger" to my milestone and the same abnormal thing happens to the screen. What causes it?
Probably it's something to do with high voltage... I'd avoid using it if something like that happens to my phone..
Usually the USB style chargers are pretty standard... the speed with which they work are strongly related to the power (Amperes) they provide, the voltage "should" be pretty standard!

Battery experts say to try and use a charger that's rated half the power of the battery.
So for a 1500 mAh battery, a charger of 850 mAh should be a better option than a 1000 mAh one.
Yes, the 1000 mAh charger would charge the battery faster than the 850 mAh one but it will decrease the lifetime of the battery faster.
Just for be able to post new thread. Sorry.
Hello, I don't want to start a new thread so I'll ask here.
The charger that came with my OB seems to be damaged. It was working properly until last last night. My phone detects the charger but it won't charge. Got powermax turned on and it automatically turned off when I connected the charger, so I know my charger does have issues.
Tried banging the charger last night, connected it to phone and started charging, woke up to see that it stopped charging 2 hours ago. It didn't even fully charge my phone. Now I'm charging it with my pc via the USB cable. I noticed that the touch screen goes wild when I use it while connected with the USB.
Now, I'm planning to buy a Galaxy S2 charger. Is it safe to use? S2 and OB has almost the same battery capacity so I'm considering it. Any other suggestions? OB ain't popular here in the Philippines so finding accessories is a real pain in the a**.
Fitted a Corby 2 charger and it seems like they use Mini-usb too. Haven't tried charging with it though.
My original charger also died... Now I use the one that came with my bluetooth headset
So I guess using the OB charger on other stuff is okay too. USB is always ~5v.
You need to test the charger with something else to be sure, though.
I had the same touchscreen freaking out problem with my old LG KS20, whenever I charged it. Like it was shorted or something. So it maybe a problem with the phone itself.

Ok kabayan, don't forget to share here the result after u try gs2 charger. I too am looking for safe alternative to my milestone charger.
Standard port - standard voltage
Don't even bother, if it has a micro USB it should be fallowing the same standard as USB for charging (5V)...
Of course test the charger for any adverse side effects like screen flickering or short battery life, and don't use it if something like that occurs, but because of the standardized voltage and the fact that usually phone chargers have between 500 - 1000 mA, 99% of chargers work...
I still haven't found any incompatible charger for my phone and I don't even buy a phone if it has a non standard Charging/Data Port... it's just stupid... so no Iphone for me!

Hello guys! I'm here for an update. For the past week I've been using a Corby 2 charger. And guess what, it works just fine! only downside is it won't charge it up to 100% (usually gets to 99% upon unplugging). And it charges the phone a little slower than the original charger. I always let the phone overcharge overnight to have 100% battery.
Since somebody stole my laptop (and my charger too) I'm using a ZTE Blade charger without problems...

I was just wondering if anyone here has spotted a Nexus 7 car charger? Does it not matter if it's not specifically made for the Nexus 7? I'm trying to find one to buy online and I'm having some troubles. First post here I think I came to the right place though.

Clicked thanks on accident lol. Any USB car charger should work, but I would make sure you grap a 1 amp one just so it has enough output to charge the tablet at a decent rate.
probably better with a 2amp one. samsung makes one for the tab2, about $12 on amazon, and just use your own microusb cable to connect to it.

Yup, go with a 2Amp one. Most of the cigarette lighter usb chargers are 2.1A.
Avoid the cheap Chinese 2+Amp car chargers, they can be so badly made they cause enough interference to wipe out your FM radio.
/edit 1Amp will be fine but don't go lower, the N7 would likely burn it out.
FYI I tried a 5v 1a wall charger and my gnex7 said f u wouldn't take the charge. 2a or nothing I say

Do you already have the Nexus 7? If so, can you take a look at the charger and see if rated at 1A output and/or try to charge it with a charger that came with your phone?
I am just curious if it can actually charge with less than 2A. The charger listed in the Play Store outputs 2Amps and I thought most tablets require 2A to charge.

Still waiting, should only be a couple of days now though...
I know this is something most people never do...but if you read the manual for the Nexus 7 it says you can charge it on a standard USB port with the Nexus 7 in sleep mode (no doubt because the power draw is much less). Standard USB ports are typically .5A...sometimes less. I would say that's the actual minimum. For the fastest charging 2A is what you want though.
The ASUS charger that comes with the N7 is rated at 2A (10W). I tested an old BlackBerry 0.85A (~4W) micoUSB charger and it seemed to work fine and the N7 didn't complain though I didn't do any scientific tests against the charging rates.
The 0.5A (2.5W) chargers probably won't even charge the unit if you're actively using it.
Cheers,
Kermee

Yeah...read my previous post...the manual says you can charge on a standard usb port (0.5A sometimes less) but only if the Nexus 7 is in sleep mode...ie you're not actively using it. If you can't charge it while connected to USB and it's in the sleep state...then your usb port is probably a low power USB port (<0.5A).
For those looking for a good backup battery charger for it...I recommend this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005NGKR54/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00
works perfectly with my Nexus 7 (just make sure to use the correct USB out port on it as only one of them is 2A)
DealExtreme Charger
Saw this one on DealExtreme, even come with cable:

Will be ordering will update when arrives. Also they're carrying Nexus 7 Cables in Pink, Green and Orange.
Was using a Sprint micro-USB plus charger (model PVX8823) with attached cable and standard USB port for 2nd device that I was using for my phone. Output is 0.65Amp which isn't sufficient and will slowly drain the N7 battery while in use. ~$35 at Sprint retail store. Wouldn't recommend for obvious reason.
Fortunately, had a spare Motorola SPN5400A 1Amp I bought with some screen protectors from Amazon because it was cheap like ~$5. 1Amp is sufficiently to maintain the charge while in use at near worse case running 3D games like Dead Trigger, Shadowngun, etc. So, 1Amp is minimum threshold.
You need a charger that:
1) Is capable of 2A (1.5A may be sufficient, 1A is a little too low)
2) Shorts D+ and D- together - This rules out most iPad chargers.
If it says it is made for iPod/iPad it will not work without modifications or adapters.
Samsung tablet chargers will work.
If you take an iPad charger, open it up, and short D+ and D- together, it will work.

Sorry to bump an old thread but any feedback with that charger? I'm looking for one with 2 port to power both my N7 and my droid razr maxx while in car.

Most chargers for android phones will work. I use my HTC charger for ,mine and I bought a car charge that has the standard micro USB connector but also has another USB port so I can charge 2 devices at the same time with 1 charging unit. You droid razor charger will work just fine. You just need to locate a charger that is capable of charging 2 devices at the same time such as this one
http://www.amazon.com/GTMax-Metalic-Vehicle-Charger-Adapter/dp/B005X5L8PI
You'll be good to go with this.

Check out this oem charger from Sprint. Its a dual port charger with a 2a output and you dont have to worry about buying a knock off charger that may or may not perform as expected. It also can be used as a wall charger. Good price too....

So are any of these confirmed 100% to work? the one a few links back (GTMax) says works with iphone, and I thougth that meant would NOT work with N7. So I am confused on what will work, and I am already on my 2nd Nexus7 being I blew out the USB trying a bunch of differnt chargers for the car.
I would like something that is small and can have multiple USB plugged in, but not a show stopper, just hope to find something on Amazon (Prefer Prime) so I can oder with my case today. Really want to use this in the car more (GPS\GoogleMusic..ect.), but with no power not a great option.
Thanks in Advance,
Drops
