Hey,
I'm new to android.
I thought I've read up on everything I'm doing. Making sure to read the threads carefully.
I've rooted my captivate and tried to put OCLF. It said it was successful, except now when my phone was rebooted it shows:
device name (samsung i896)
rogers screen
galaxy s screen
then it goes black and vibrates every so often
I've tried searching and can't seem to find what I need.
If anyone can help, I can boot my phone into recovery mode, but thats about it. Nothing works in there right now,
Can anyone help me get this fixed, or back to the stock rogers firmware that would be great
Thanks!
you can try to use key combination to get into the download mode and flash the stock rom.
if you cannot get into the download mode, my suggestion is to build a jig or buy one:

if you cannot get into the download mode, my suggestion is to build a jig or buy one just in case:

I can get into download mode and recovery mode.
I'm kind of lost on flashing back to the stock rom. I'm looking at other threads on how to do so, but something isnt working when I try.
Someone please help!
I'm experiencing the same problem even after flashing Rogers stock (2.1 and 2.2) with Oden and Heimdall. All flashing indicates they were successful; however, I still get the black screen, lit touch icons, and vibrations after the three boot screens/animations.
EDIT: Problem was solved for me by flashing a stock file that contained dbdata.rfs and param.lfs with 512.pit and repartitioning. The Odin flashable Rogers 2.1 stock ROM I put together can be found here. Because it is complete, it will also remove the AT&T boot screen if you flashed an AT&T ROM.

Have you tried flashing AT&T or Rogers stock?

Hi Everyone,
I had previously been running the stock I9000 JK3 ROM on my Captivate with xcal's reoriented kernel. Today I decided to install the I9000 JL2 Rom from samfirmware.com.
I started ODIN, entered Download Mode, and flashed the ROM (in the PDA section) with no problem. After the flash had completed, the phone attempted to reboot, but there was nothing but a black screen. I tried every way I know to get into Download mode but nothing works. I don't even get the Phone--!--Computer image that I've gotten in the past when I've messed up a flash.
I've read that this kind of brick occurs when the boot loader is corrupted, and that the only way to fix it is to use a RIFF JTAG box. My question is: what did I do wrong? I flashed many ROMs before, all through ODIN, but was always able to get back to stock if necessary.
My research suggests that it has something to do with sbl.bin. Can someone enlighten me? How can I tell if a ROM will mess up my bootloader? Do ROMs that mess up bootloaders contain the sbl.bin file?
Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.
If your getting the phone / computer screen you should still be able to restore.
Use the following method to get into DOWNLOAD mode and then Odin 1 click back to stock.
Take out the battery,SIM, and external SDCard
Turn on Odin JH7 1 Click Back to Stock
Plug in your USB cable
While holding down the Volume +/- Button place the batter back in.
If you get the gray battery charging signal - you need to attempt it again. Should go into DOWNLOAD mode and you can restore your phone back to stock.
The SBL.bin is bad mojo if you fubar it as it has important things like being able to use your buttons to get into the different modes (download/recovery). I don't know what else it controls as I'm not a developer.
Also read this on the General thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=775911
interesting stuff about the SBL.bin - so Flashers beware!
Thank you so much for the information. Unfortunately, I do not see the Phone--!--Computer icon, and I confirmed that the ROM that was flashed did indeed contain an SBL.bin file. The boot loader is most certainly bricked.
I really think a warning about the SBL.bin file should be stickied somewhere prominent, so other people don't make the same mistake that I did.
Thanks Again
It works for me

Wow it works for my captivate, after a failed odin update the captivate was death black screen at all, with these procedure I can reflash with odin. thanks a lot.
after i got a soft brick with odin, all i used since were one click .jar's made for my phone.
Hello all and thx in advance.
ATT Captivate batch 1010
I had Cognition 2.3 I think on my phone and it worked great however I wanted to try a different ROM so I attempted to restore my phone to stock using ODIN one click. I realized after that that I never disabled the voodoo lag fix or deleted my user data.
Now I am stuck in a boot loop that either shows the white ATT logo screen flashing every couple seconds or the phone off charge screen re starting every couple seconds.
I bought a USB Jig and it works great so I can get into D/L mode easily but I have tried flashing the stock firmware at least 6 times now using different machines, different ports, different versions of ODIN and I've searched around these forums and others for several hours trying to find a solution. It seems that I needed to erase my user data in recovery mode and removed the lag fix before I did this but it is what it is. I have tried to get to recovery mode to no avail. All I can get to is download mode.
Any ideas on what I should/can do?
any help will be greatly appreciated.

I think that you may need to use the Froyo Odin (JI6).

please help, i have the same problem, was flashing back to stock from a serendipit 5.12 so that i could get the 6.0 version... all went as planned until odin said "reset" which was my cue to unplug and that the process was complete.... i unplugged the phone and tried to reboot and now it does exactly as the first post described, at&t logo then black screen, then back to the at&t logo then black screen again... my computer doesnt recognize my phone none of the methods of getting to download screen will work... no matter how many times i pull the sd, sim, and batt, no matter the button combination i use or which order i use them in.... same result... i cant afford a new phone i need help, i will donate also... i knew this stuff was over my head, but "curiosity killed the cat" i guess...
I had the exact same problem. Try this method, it's the one that worked for me when all others failed... But remember to follow it EXACTLY.
1. Pull out the battery.
2. Hold Volume UP+DOWN (Don't let go of them until you see the download screen).
3. Stick in the USB (which is connected to the computer).
4. Put the battery back in.
If not, you might need to get a USB Jig.
That Froyo Odin link worked!
Thanks guys I flashed to Froyo and it worked!
I've since flashed clockwork recovery and gotten Serendipity 6.1
As far as getting into download mode I had to use one of the USB jigs.
I ordered one from the guy who does the rom reviews but you could make one as well.
On another note the new ROM seems to be discharging my battery really fast
Before I start investigating it as a problem I am going to charge it completely then let it discharge completely to calibrate it.
Thanks again guys
Rob
I just fixed mine last night, I had the exact same problem because of the exact same upgrade. What you need to do is get or make a usb jig. There's a couple resources around here for how to do it.
Here's a video showing how to make one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rdn5GoRjhn0
Once I got my phone into download mode, I used Darky's ROM Resurrection Edition ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940671 ) to restore my phone. Just scroll down to where it says "Files Needed" and download the Captivate version. Once you have that downloaded, use the jig to put your phone into download mode and follow the directions in the Darky's video (jump to about 2:30 into the video). Once I had my phone booting, I used clockwork to install Serendipity 6.
Hope that helps you as much as it helped me!!
went to radio shack, got all the stuff to make a jig and i was able to get my phone into download mode! now to try darko...... thanks everyone!
odin doesnt reconize phone
which odin3 are you using? 1.7? or the one click to stock?
you mentioned you had the bootloop problem before, so you should be using odin 1.7 with 2.2 stock.
open odin
get phone into download mode with your nice jig
unplug jig and plug in computer
box in odin should turn yellow.
And make sure you have the correct drivers installed. CRUCIAL.

Yep, tried the Odin one click - caught in a boot loop with the AT&T Logo. I have yet to try the Heimdall one.
UPDATE
Tried Odin and Heimdall One-Clicks - unsuccessful. I'm think I will need the stock Eclair firmware file with Odin and the pit file.

You ever get this to work? - I'm in a similar situation. all flashes 'work' but get stuck at ATT on boot. Not sure Eclair is an option or not since mine is a refurbished phone that started on 2.2

If one-clicks aren't working, you might need to grab the full version of Heimdall or Odin and flash a full package. Some of the newer phone builds don't like one-clicks.

[Q] Boot Loop with no recovery or download mode (R&D mode fixed, stuck in Boot Loop)
HI Guys
Need some help, I've been searching the previous post of similar problems but nobody seems to have my issue.
The story so far, I was updating my wife's GalaxyS i9000 Kernel with the latest version of CF-Root. (It was running stock version of Eclair 2.1) I couldn't get into download or recovery mode before the flash, so i used ADB to force it into Download mode then used Odin to update the PDA file. It all worked ok then i rebooted the phone and that is where the problem started. It just gets stuck rebooting to the GalaxyS GT-i9000 Screen over and over and over again. I've tried the 3 button recovery or download option and that doesn't work. So i am at a loss everyone. Any Ideas? I was thinking i might need to make up a usb jig.
Any help would be much appreciated as this is my wife's phone so you can understand the stress!
Sounds like you are the lucky owner of an i9000 with a faulty SBL which prevents you using the 3 button combo.
If you can't get download mode you'll need a jig to recover it, then look into this to fix the 3 button combo.
Great it worked! So 3 button combo works, Do you have any ideas on how to get the phone out of the boot loop that it is stuck on without wiping user data like sms and stuff of the phone?
You were running rooted 2.1 correct? What did you flash in Odin that broke it?
*Might* be as simple as reflashing the right CF-root for your firmware.
Thats were i went wrong, i tried to root from stock to CF-Root-XX_UNK_JVQ-v3.7-CWM3RFS so i've been trying to find a stock version to go back too.

Is there a way to flash to Froyo from eclair without losing any data?
Hi there, I am new to this forum as I am trying to fix my gf's Samsung Galaxy S i9000M on Bell.
I tried to search up boot loop and have tried a few different ideas on the board but it doesn't seem to work.
Would like to know if anyone can help.
Here are the specs: Samsung Galaxy S i9000M - unrooted / stock.
Problem: The phone when turned on will only show the "Samsung Galaxy S I9000M" screen. It will turn black and then reloop itself. I have tried the 3 button boot to "download mode" and have successfully connected to ODIN.
I have tried to download PDA/Phone/CSC from one of the pages on this forum containing North American firmware files.
However, the problem still persists! I cannot check the OS version as I can't get the phone to boot into the OS. Is this a bootloader corruption problem? What should I do to try to fix this issue?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! THANK YOU in advance.
I assume you want Gingerbread?
If so, you want the UGKG3 download from Bell (it's the only GB ROM from Bell to date).
Go here and search for UGKG3.
The file is in 7Zip format. If you do not have anything to unpack it with, download IZArc.
Thanks for responding so quickly.
I did try the GB firmware - flashed it with ODIN - the software says successful.
But once the phone boots - it goes back into the loop - it does not know to unpack the OS to try to install and boot into it....
Any other ideas? Thanks again!
Did you flash it as a single file or 3 files?
You need to unpack the 7Zip file so you end up with 3 files:
Select PDA_UGKG3_Sbl.tar.md5 for PDA
Select CSC_BMCKG3.tar.md5 for CSC
Select PHONE_UGKG3.tar.md5 PHONE
Then flash with Odin. That should get the phone up and running again.
---------- Post added at 11:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:17 PM ----------
How long has she had the phone? I wonder if she was on Froyo or GB.
Can you get into the recovery menu?
Thanks for your response.
I have unpacked all three files and loaded it into ODIN as per the firmware upgrade instructions on the thread you provided me.
I have also tried loading in both both the GB and the Froyo versions (UGKG3, UGJK3). After the "successful" message on ODIN, the phone boots up - shows the Samsung Galaxy GT I9000M screen and then goes black and keeps looping again.
I have a feeling this made me a problem with the bootloader. If the phone is completely stock, which one should i try flashing?
As the phone is stock there isn't a recovery (CWM) that i know of.... Or am I incorrect?
thanks again for your help!
OK, thanks for the clarification.
There should be the stock recovery from Samsung (2e or 3e).
Yes, it does sound like a bootloader problem.
Is it still under warranty?
EDIT: What is the build date for the phone? There will be a number in YY.MM format under the battery.
See if you can get into the recovery and try to clear the cache. That may give an indication as to what is going on.
We've had the phone for a year and a few months, so no more warranty.
In fact, we brought it back to bell store and they said there is "no way" the phone can be fixed. (yea right).
So I see a bunch of bootloaders in the forum here. Are there specific ones that work for the GT i9000M on bell? Or since I've tried flashing gb on the phone, do I need to download one that is specific to the OS? sorry as I am quite a n00b at this.
thanks!
The 3 file ROMs include a boot loader.
The GB one for Bell only includes the secondary bootloader (sbl.bin).
Bell no longer sells the i9000m, so they are hoping you'll simply buy a new one.
Your GFs phone is a couple of months older than ours. I bet the phone is one of the ones that has the issue where the internal storage is known to fail (builds prior to 11.03).
If that's the case, I think Samsung may repair/replace it, since it's a known issue with the early i9000m phones.
Did the phone get updated via Kies recently?
thanks again for following up.
How do I test if the phone's internal storage failed?
No I have not tried to update the phone via KIES. How does this work and what will it do?
Thanks!
Going into recovery and clearing the cache might show it.
If you see an error message that it can't mount something, that would be an indication.
EDIT: What's the build code?
I can't get into a recovery mode because the phone doesn't have CWM nor can I get by even the Samsung screen when it first turns on.
How do you flash via KIES? All I can do is get the phone into download mode. Can't do anything more.
Thanks.
Boot loop on stock Bell GT-I9000M
I have the same issue and still trying to find a solution.
Can't get into recovery. From most of what I read it's the boot loader. But I may be wrong, I 'm very new to this. I flashed with I9000UGKG3-homebinary with no luck. I did not however try the Sbl.bin file yet. I can still get to the Download mode and don't want to loose that ability.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

although you do not have CWM you should have a stock recovery... I know you have probably already tried.. but try again.
Menu+Power+Volume up...release only the power button as soon as the initial screen disappears.
if you do get into this screen you can do full wipes...
--pm me if you live in the Toronto area
It also might be a boot loader problem depending on what version of of android you were on and what you tried to do with odin and if you had the right version with the bootloaders etc.....

As dlockhart said, you should have the stock recovery on the phone.
Since you can get into download mode, you should be able to get into recovery mode by pressing volume up+home+power button.
Flashing through Kies only works if your phone will actually boot.
Since the phone is constantly boot looping, i tried to go into the stock recovery mode multiple times with the volume up + menu + power combination. Tried releasing the power button when the words are on the screen, when it is blank, and other permutations - but i cannot get into the stock recovery.
Once i press the volume down button instead though, i can quickly jump into download mode.
Is this normal? or am i doing something completely wrong?
Is there another way to get into stock recovery mode?
Don't release the power button until you see the recovery screen.
maybe also try flashing another kernel?
Boot loop on stock Bell GT-I9000M
I have tried to get to the recovery screen also with varied timing on button presses and releases, but no luck. Vol down and power gets me to download screen every time though.
I would keep trying the volume up power and home and as soon as you see the black background with galaxy showing let go of all buttons but wait until you see it restart again. So you'll hold vol. up + power + home and your phone will restart and you'll see the galaxy words keep holding the buttons until it restarts again and when you see the words let go of all three buttons. Now if your willing to switch kernels I would go to www.darkyrom.com and follow the directions there for flashing darkyrom 10.4.2 its just as smooth as stock but its not stock and voids your waranty, but since you dont have a waranty go for it. Good luck if you need any extra help you can pm me as well. I have had my phone since Oct. 2010 and flashed atleast a hundred roms and thought i broke my phone a few times but these thing are damn near impossible to totally mess up.

Is there a minimum remaining battery-life requirement for the device to enter Recovery?
Does the 3-button Recovery require power cable to be attached or not?
For what its worth, my I9000m has a Build Date of 11.04 and came with Froyo 2.2, so unless he already updated he's definitely not on 2.3.3
Downloading Kies to your PC and updating to 2.3.3 that way, just might work. Thats what I did.
So basically I have a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate (i896) and it was running 2.1, so I decided to try and upgrade to the newest stock available for the captivate (which is 2.3.5). I had to use heimdall because I bought the phone used and it was rooted and possibly running a custom ROM so kies is not an option. When I put the phone in download mode the computer wouldn't recognize it (I'm on a Mac). I did alot of reading online and I couldn't find a solution. So I decided to flash a new ROM hoping that this would solve the problem.
So I flashed a random ICS ROM. But with this ROM I couldn't even access download mode. I tried a 3 button fix, I tried to use terminal to boot into download mode, and I tried to use ADB from my computer; nothing worked. So I figured I would flash another ROM (this time I used Hellybean) but when I tried to install it, a bunch of code ran on the screen and it said "installation aborted". Before attempting to flash this ROM I completely wiped the phone (i formatted the system from the mounts menu in CWM) and now the phone is showing the at&t logo, then going to black, then some code runs on the screen, then it goes black and starts the whole thing again.
I cant get to recovery or download mode.
Is it bricked? How do I fix this?
I don't know what I did wrong! any help would be appreciated.
P.s. I would really like to avoid building a jig because I feel like Im not too good at that kind of stuff....but if that's what it comes to...
Thanx in advance

I've tried all of those methods except for using a jig. Is it possible that while flashing a ROM my phone somehow lost download mode?
Also if all of those combos didn't work is it likely that a jig will work?
Looks like you started reading after you messed up the phone. Update instructions say clearly that you need GB bootloaders before you proceed to ICS or JB. You provide no information what exactly ROM you started from, what GB ROM you attempted to flash (with or without bootloaders), what exactly ICS you flashed after, what "some code" runs on the screen now, etc. It's a lot of guessing here. If bootloaders are messed up, than you won't be able to fix your phone at home. I have never seen a problem you describe, so wait for someone with more experience to stop by.
I got it going! All it needed was a jig and then I was able to flash stock GB with bootloaders.
Thanks for the help.
Good news! :good:
I have a Cappy and gingerbread boot loaders come in three flavours i897, i896 and i9000 and they're backwards compatible with froyo and éclair roms. Don't mix froyo and gb boot loaders though you will hard brick your device. I have i896(Canadian) boot loaders and when I flash kk4 [email protected] Odin gingerbread my "i896" boot screen is garbled image of pixels until I flash the proper param.lfs file to match. Hope this helps. BTW I have a jig as well and for all galaxy devices it's a must.
