I bricked my CDMA Hero. I rooted it with the super one click, and installed a early version of froyo, and had some issues with it. I wanted to get it off, so I used CWM recovery, and formatted everything. Now when I turn it on it goes to the HTC opening screen, and stays there for hours until the battery dies. It will charge, but my computer doesn't recognize it, and it will not boot. What can I do?
Bricked means it is a brick and that is it, your phone still turns on so the good news is that it is not bricked.
Need some more info before anyone can help:
1. You reformatted everything using clockwork recovery
2. Did you re-install a new ROM?
3. Did you restore a nandroid backup?
I would recommend booting into recovery and wiping everything (factory reset and dalvik-cache) in recovery, then reinstall froyo - once you are booted and running you can figure out what you want to put on it. At least your phone would work then.

I'm also pretty sure your phone isn't bricked, as long as you can still get into Recovery, it Most Likely can be Fixed!
I also Recommend trying to Wipe Everything, then Reinstalling a New Rom, Also as a Suggestion... If it were me I'd Probably Choose a Different ROM to install! My Very First ROM I Flashed was a Cyanogen one, and I had Trouble with it Booting Also!!
Try LiquidSense... its Only 2.1, but its Stable, It Boots Fast, and just plain out Fast as Hell!
You can always Switch to Whatever you want... Once you get your phone back to a Working Condition!
Good Luck!

I cannot get it into recovery now. It will turn on, but it stops at the initial HTC screen, and stays there until the battery dies. When I connect my phone with my computer, the computer recognizes it, but I can't seem to get the 2.1 exe from HTC.com download to the phone. My guess is I wiped the thing clean. Unfortuneately, I didn't back anything up.
I can't even get into recovery, it just sits on the HTC startup screen until the battery dies. It does recognize when I connect it to my computer, but running the 2.1 exe doesn't do anything.
Can you adb into the phone and flash a recovery?
I think that would be a helpful start.

Pull the battery, hold volume down and power and you should boot into bootloader. I believe it is *home* to get you back into recovery. Then reinstall a new rom and you should be good to go.

t-y, got it. Yeah, then adb a new recovery image may be the only thing. But he may not even be able to get in then.
Just a matter of waiting right now.
He did say his computer was recognizing his device, so he might be ok.
If he can flash a new recovery, or even just adb.. then he can start rebuilding it.
stonemad:
You'll want to grab a recovery, and try to connect to your phone via ADB when it's on.
Then do adb shell
then : flash_image recover [name of recovery].img

Ok, I can get to the CWM recovery, there is no backup files, no recovery files, and no files on my sd card. I cannot seem to get an opperating system on. I mounted my phone to my computer and downloaded .zip files, but it still says no files available.
How do I flash a recovery, I can't find any files anywhere.
i have .zip files on my sd card to flash, but when I try to apply them it says no files found.
Ok, I have been working on this all day. Thank you to every body who answered. This is the situation as best as I see it. I can use the power and the down volume buttons to go to recovery mode. I have ClockworkMod 2.5 and can mount my computer to my sd card. It appears that I don't have an opperating system at all, or anything else on the phone. I have downloaded several .zip files and tried to install them, I can mount them, but when I try to apply them it states that there are no update.zip files on the sd card. I have deduced that I need an opperating system for an update to work, but I could be wrong. I am having a hard time finding the right files to use to get my phone to go. It seems salvageable, but I'm not sure how. People have sugested a couple of Mods to instal, but I don't know how to do that with what I have. CWM is asking for a update.zip, or a recovery.zip, but I don't know wich one at which time, or even how to get it to flash. That is what I think I know, but that is subject to change depening on what you all know.(showing just how foolish I really am) Thanks again people for you time and advice, I really do appreciate it.
Don't select "install update.zip", select "install zip from SD card" or whatever the option is called.
I've tried that too, it seems like all the software is gone. HTC, Sprint, Google, and Android. Does anybody have a download they think will work. I'm at the point to try anything.

What software are you talking about? Sprint, Google, and Android what, specifically? A download for what?
Mount usb storage in recovery, put rom of your choice on there, and flash?
what about kernals, how do I know that I have everything I need?
ROMs generally have kernels in the zip builds already. From the sounds of it, you're kind of lost at what you're doing.
Do you have a SD card reader? if so, plug in the SD card to your computer and pull over a ROM zip, like Cyanogenmod or whatever is to your liking.
Then in recovery, go to "install zip from sdcard"
go to "Choose zip from sdcard"
then search for the ROM zip you put on the sd card.
State exactly STEP BY STEP, what you are doing. Your phone is perfectly fine, you just dont have a ROM on your phone, which is why you cant boot. You're not missing kernels, or anything, you simply dont have the baseline of a ROM on your phone yet.
Post back
I don't know where or how to find a rom, I have heard good things about cyanogen, but can't seem to find where to download it. Is ClockworkMod a rom, and if so how do I use it. You're right, I got way in over my head, and now I just want my phone back the way I bought it. What is your favorite rom, and can you give me a link. Thanks again everyone.

My hero is stuck on the HTC (white screen) reboot, it keeps looping every 15mins or so, until the battery dies.
I tried to go into FastBoot (which keeps flashing, the screen turns on and off), but I can get it to go into fastboot USB if I hold down the "search" button (and the screen stabilizes too)
I flashed the stock rom, but that doesn't help. I even tried to clear all the data by doing, home + back key.
Did I truly brick the phone? I even swapped memory cards to see if it would help, but no luck there.
Any help would be GREATLY apperciated.
Thank you!
I'm still pretty new to the rooting and flashing stuff (I've had my Hero for less than a week) but I ran into the same problem and was able to get out of it. If you have an external card reader that you can use, it would help greatly, because that's how I was able to add data to the SD card without having to access the phone. Turn your phone off and remove the SD card. Plug it into your reader, then into your PC, and add a custom ROM directly to the root of the card (i.e. - NOT inside a folder) like Fresh 2.3.3 or anything else you want to use (I used Fresh because I couldn't get CM6 to load). Put the card back into the phone and boot it into recovery mode (hold the HOME button whole powering it on). You should be able to access the ROM and flash it from there, just be sure to wipe first and backup at some point. Hope this helps!!
Did you completely wipe the phone (data and dalvik) before flashing a new ROM? If you didn't wipe the top 3 options (data, dalvik, ext3) before flashing a ROM, this may be what's causing your bootloop.
Bricking the Hero is very very very hard. Unless you flashed a GSM radio, you're pretty much safe
Go back into recovery, wipe EVERYTHING (except SD), flash original ROM, it should work.
Where is your dalvik cache btw?

Don't extract the zip file. Just copy it to the root of your SD card. Hold down the home key + the power key to boot into recovery. If that doesn't work, try to using the volume DOWN button + the power key. Then press home when the screen loads up. I'm sure you know this, I'm just making sure you didn't forget anything.

I'm gonna have to agree with Big-O-Devil here, stop trying to do it through recovery and just use the RUU from HTC/Sprint

I have been doing that, I've tried to use the HTC/Sprint RUU and its still the same. I've been flashing the .5 RUU and .6 RUU, but none of which have helped. They are all still stuck in the reboot loop.

From your recovery menu (holding Home then pressing Power to turn the phone on) there is an option called "Wipe". Select that one, then there are 5 options within that. Do the top 3 of them (data, dalvik, ext3). After that, push your Back button which brings you to the main recovery menu. Then select Flash zip from sd card and go through the process of flashing whatever ROM.zip you have on the root of your SD (the whole .zip itself, don't extract all the files out).
If that still doesn't cure your bootloop problems, then you need to download the stock RUU (you can find it at this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6686401&postcount=2). This RUU is NOT the same as nfinitefx45's STOCK ROM! You have to run this RUU through HTCSync on your PC. But try the wiping that I recommended above first....then do this RUU if that doesn't work. Know that running the RUU will remove your root access, so you will have to re-root again after it's done.

I apologize, I wasn't using the correct terms.
I don't currently have the phone rooted, I have used the Sprint/HTC RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.27.651.5_R_signed_release(2)
file to "reset"(if you want to call it that) back to stock mode...but that doesn't do anything, it still is stuck in a reboot loop.
So currently, I dont have any options other than the default when I press "home" on the phone while turning it on. It just automatically clears the data when I do that.
@Big-O-Devil - I have used that file in that post before, and It doesn't help the situation. It is also stuck in a reboot loop.
@YoungSinema - If the file is different from the STOCK RUU, the "exe" that runs...then I would love to try that out. I went ahead and sent you the pm just incase.
Try running the RUU again via HTC Sync on your PC while your phone is turned on and during the bootlooping.

Hi
I have been using Clockwork recovery for months and tonight was flashing ROM/zips as usual, and all of a sudden when I try to get into recovery my Nexus just sits on the colored X. When I pull the battery it reboots fine with the ROM I currently have installed. Then I go back into ROM manager, re-flash clockwork recovery: it says flash was successful, so then I choose to boot into recovery, and again it just sits at the blue, red, green and yellow X.
So then I tried a round-about way by going into ROM manager and choosing to restore a backup. Again, when I choose to restore backup it just boots to the colored X again and freezes there.
I've also tried the regular method of holding power button and trackball and get the same results.
Does anyone know why this might be happening? Right now I'm stuck with a ROM I was just playing with and didn't necessarily want to use permanently....I'm afraid I might be stuck with it forever now
Thanks for any help!!!
I've been searching and I should add that my bootloader is not unlocked

Well I ended up wiping all user data in fastboot and now I get nothing but an X nomatter what I do, won't boot at all.
All I can do is hold down the power button and trackball and get the page that says
bootloader
reboot
reboot bootloader
power down
the only way I'm going to get this fixed is to use my computer and I've never done it that way...I've always used ROM manager
I'll read the links but I think I'm screwed because a lot of this is over my head
Thanks for the links !
1) Try to follow "Unroot/restore" guide first, see if you can restore functionality using PASSIMG method. Once you have functional FRG33 with recovery, you can root it, replace the recovery and install custom ROM of your choice / update to FRG83G.
2) If nothing helps - consider a) replacing your phone, b) unlocking the bootloader and flashing recovery through fastboot.
Getting in over your head is sometimes a good way to expand your horizons
Hi Jack
Thanks for the help
I'll do some reading and see what I can do....got two feet of snow here so I guess I have the time
worst comes to worst I'm still under warranty.
Well I tried the instructions but nothing happens..it just sits on the screen with the androids skateboarding. I renamed the zip and moved it to my SD card but it doesn't seem to even search for it, let alone find it. Really wish I had not deleted storage. At least I had a working ROM at that point.
Which instructions did you try? Did you download FRG33, rename it to PASSIMG.ZIP (and not PASSIMG.ZIP.ZIP !), put it on the root of SD card and reboot to bootloader?

Hey Jack...
Sorry for taking so long to respond...I finally had to crash for awhile, my brain was frying.
Yes I did what you describe: downloaded FRG33, renamed it PASSIMG.ZIP(not ZIP.ZIP) moved it to SD card just like any ROM and held down volume and power button and came to the screen with the three androids. Then it just stayed there, nothing happened.
The only thing is I had to use my backup Nexus One(EDGE only on ATT model) to move it to the SD card as I don't know how to access the SD card with the device acting like this. If I connect the device to my computer while the three androids are on the screen, I hear it connect to the computer, but nothing pops up allowing me to access the SD card....
Like I said I'm a noob at this I appreciate you trying to help me here
About 3 seconds after the 3 androids skating appears, you should see some text flash up?
It does say you're in HBOOT and not FASTBOOT right? If in fastboot, pick the bootloader option and then it should find the file.

Hi Rusty
Sorry I somehow missed your post here. Yes I see some text flash up...takes a little longer than 3 seconds...maybe 8 seconds...
At first it says I'm in Fastboot, but then I press the power button and then it says HBOOT at the top.....that's when the text flashes on the screen. It flashes too fast for me to read it though....but nothing happens after the text flashes on the screen.
I'll be damned guys....I got it working! After responding to Rusty's post above, I decided to give the whole thing another try. Well I went thru the whole process of putting the file on the SD card and realized I had in fact renamed it zip.zip....it LOOKED like it was only ZIP, but when I clicked on the file while it was still on my PC, it said it was zip.zip...that's when I knew what the problem was.
My problem now is getting it re-rooted. Originally I used the Universal Androot application..the true one-click method...I just tried it again and it didn't work.
Is there a way to downgrade to a version where this app will work again?
Thanks guys you really helped me out here!!
Please read the guide in Wiki, and follow one of the zillion SuperOneClick threads that are around. It's really as simple as it gets - and if you happen to have Windows 7, it's even more simple - you won't need to install the drivers.

Let's just say it's an app that the system needs Go to Market, download and install it, try again. If it doesn't work - you can try to install custom recovery manually, using another guide from Wiki. Look in "Installing Recovery" for "For locked bootloader - flash_image using Terminal" guide. If you don't know what Terminal is - download "Android Terminal" by Jack Palevich from the Market.
Use the fix problems button in Titanium Backup to install it, long story short is it lets you use a bunch of native Linux commands that as missing from Android.
OK guys, Im not new to the android deal, or flashing, but im stuck here. I have a Sprint Hero, and I need to go back to stock. Problem is, the USB port is broken, and will only charge. Without usb or an s-off bootloader I think its impossible to go back to stock. Why do you need to?
can u get one of those USB SD card readers? (this way u can put ur SD card into ur computer USB port and transfer files onto it)
search around there is a HERCIMG from the ruu for HBOOT somewhere on here.
i looked real quick and found this, it may help.

Rooting instructions. I know this works on the latest official sprint, because I've done it successfully.
As far as not being able to RUU, some people have an issue running the RUU if they haven't ran HTC Sync. Try that and see if it works, and if not, follow this method.
HERCIMG-2.31.651.7.ZIP download it. it's the Sprint 2.31.651.7 executable but in signed zip format, for people who aren't running windows. Not sure who actually converted the executable to a signed zip, but props to you for helping those that can't run the regular RUU.
Rename the file to HERCIMG.zip and place it on the root of your SD card.
Power the phone off.
Press and hold your Volume Down button, and while still holding it press the power button to power your phone back up into HBoot mode.
HBoot should then automatically verify the zip file, and ask you if you would like
to flash it. Press your trackball to confirm the update (downgrade in this case),
or press your send button to cancel.
Once on 651.7 you would root as normal, but you should not have to RUU back to 651.7 just to root.

Just a thought, can you download the RUU onto the phone via dropbox or something similar?
Ok. I have an s off bootloader. I can't boot to any rom as it gets stuck at the htc screen. I have tried the above mentioned hercimg file (even though you cant open it, because it says the file is invalid, and I have downloaded it a number of times, so its not a download error) and hboot wont find it even after renaming. I can move files to the sd card via my computer. I have the adapter. I need to get back to something close to stock, so that i can activate the phone. I dont want to get the thread off topic though, just need help getting back there.
Check your computer's USB drivers. If you can charge it you should be able to use USB. Or use someone else's computer. Then running the ruu from HTC website will work just fine. This sounds more like the computers end then the phone. Ymmv.
®patience is a virtue©
If you are s off just flash a recovery from h boot. What bootloader version do you have?
Edit: also theres a link to an s off RUU in the links thread I started. Also, you never said why you wanted to unroot?
il, I dont even necessarilly need to unroot. But if people would please read the first post. It would help answer some of the questions.... I CAN FLASH ANY ROM, BUT NOTHING WILL BOOT PAST THE HTC SCREEN. It also says what bootloader version i have, its version 1.47. I have clockwork customer recovery version 2.5 I believe it is. HBOOT wont find any file, period. Including a recovery. And its not a computer issue, its with the USB. Trust me.
I used this when I RUU'd recently and it worked great. jasonmaloney put this up a while ago and this gem was in the middle of the thread. It broke root and I rerooted using Regaw's method this time.
H-boot should have no problem recognizing this.
Drunk, it wont read that either. It doesnt even recognize that there is a HERCIMG on the SD card. This phone is bunk. not even a week ago, it was booting AOSP rom fine, no issues. Then I went to turn it on the other day, and wont boot past the HTC screen. Not sure what the deal is with this POS. About ready to bounce it off the concrete here.

Trust me.

Whoa, calm the F down. My phone isn't the broken one, it's yours. Anyway, I did read the OP, but it was real early, and I missed the 1.47. AFAIK hboot cannot fail IF you build the zip correctly. Pull out the SDcard and put this recovery zip on it, then flash from hboot. Do the device erase thing in fastboot before that. I just flashed it and it went fine. It's CWM 2.5.0.1. You will to rename it to "HERCIMG.zip". Also, were you using any other mods like FR or something? http://dl.dropbox.com/u/5669105/HERCIMG2501.zip
il, I have clockwork recovery 2.5. Ill try this though here in a minute and see what happens. This phone is just ticking me off something fierce.
Il, it wont find that either. I put the zip on the root of the SD, and renamed it to HERCIMG and HBOOT still doesnt recognize that there is a HERCIMG file on the SD

just to clarify, you named it HERCIMG.zip all caps and with .zip at the end? If so, maybe your card is bad or your reader in the phone is bad? Do you have another card you can try it on?
yes sir. HERCIMG.zip And its on the card, as when i boot into recovery, I can see the file there.
Man, if you can get into recovery you can fix it. Do a full wipe and flash a stable ROM, reboot, and then walk away from the phone for about 15 minutes.
Try the instructions at http://romrepo.info/wiki/index.php?title=Install_from_another_ROM
See, thats what I think too, but it wont do anything but boot to the HTC screen. I have tried quiet a few roms, and get the same thing. I just left for roughly 2 hours, came back and still stuck at the HTC boot screen. Im lost brother.
OK, just a quick update. Got it fixed with the help of laei1472. The recovery was botched, that was what was not letting me flash anything. Finally got it to boot one of AOSP's earlier roms (which was the last rom it had booted, before going haywire). Then we were trying to flash RA 1.7 through terminal, but it wouldnt find flash_image. Ended up finding a file to flash it as that version of AOSP was missing the flash_image file in /system/bin. Once we got that, then I was able to flash RA 1.7, and now can flash any rom I want too. What a pain in the butt experience. But happy the phone is back up and going. Thanks again laie1472.
good to hear. glad you got it fixed
Hey, my buddy let me borrow his rooted NC running the Honeycomb Preview on it. He wanted to see what MIUI looked like on it, and let me put it on there for him. I guess I was dumb to assume this was running Android, so it must flash files like any android phone.
He has some program to boot the NC into clockwork mod recovery. While in CW recovery, I wiped data, but after this, it froze while in CW recovery! I've never encountered this, so I just decided to reboot the thing and go from there. It rebooted and directed me to the set-up screen with the green android dude with the persons hand telling me to press him
"Welcome to LogicPD Zoom 2"
No matter what I press, nothing responds. I read up on http://nookdevs.com/Flash_back_to_clean_stock_ROM#ixzz1AAsuy5td and tried to accomplish the 8 restart thing. I don't think I can complete that because whenever I boot up, it immediately puts on a splash screen that says "Loading.."
No part of the boot cycle does it say "Welcome to the future of reading"
Is it possible flashing this thing back to stock? I tried to tap into adb, so I could put it into bootloader from there, but my adb doesn't recognize it. Even with the "adbfix.bat" file.
Any help will help.
Thanks
First, load an image of CWR v3.2.0.1 on an SD card. Then, get a CM7 ROM and the market app .zip file and put them on the card and you should be good to go. Older versions of CWR tend to freeze up when wiping the cache....
In my opinion, no one should be running Honeycomb on the Nook unless off an SD card as a secondary "toy".
Well thanks for the suggestion. I couldn't boot into any kind of recovery mode, which made things kinda confusing.
I fixed my adb issue, so luckily, I could log into adb. I cleared data and cache through adb, and than downloaded the boot.img file and system.img file. Pushed those to the nook that way. Now I'm back to out of box status ready to put some MIUI goodness on here.
I've been having trouble with my Vibrant and with T-Mobile in limbo I picked up a N1 off ebay to hold me over. This thing is driving me insane!
The phone came with CM7 installed on it, but the person that shipped it to me didn't erase any of there stuff so I figured I would flash a fresh image on the phone to take care of things. I've flashed my Vibrant a dozen or so times and never had an issue. Flashed the N1 and it comes up with an X made of 4 different colored lines and a little lock at the bottom. I know some roms take a while to load so I let it sit for an hour. Nothing.
Since I've been trying everything I can find out how to recover the phone including all of the guides on the wiki. I'm at my wits end at this point. I can't get into clockwork at all on the phone. It gets stuck in the bootloader and if I select recovery it just takes me back.
I've got droid explorer running, and the phone shows up, but it doesn't show anything on the phone, no folders or files and won't let me load anything on to it. (it says it is, but then stays blank) I have no clue what to do at this point short of taking a sledge hammer to it. (obviously I'm posting this as I consider that to be plan B)
I don't need anything special, I just want a working phone. Is that really so much to ask for?
If ur Phone is running( means u can boot) try flashing cwr from rom manager and flash the rom again or try to hard reset the phone and then see ?
Firstly, I would start of by being more specific about what you have tried.
If you really have tried "everything", then there's nothing anyone can do for you.
I suspect you haven't tried "everything"...?

I'm sure I haven't, just what I found in the wiki
I tried the PASSIMG.ZIP and it failed
I tried Amon_Ra's Recovery and the only way I can get it to do anything is to tell it to flash in droid explorer and it just reboots and gets stuck. Now nothing is showing up file wise in droid explorer and I can't transfer the image onto the root.
When I could get into clockwork I tried flashing different roms but it would just go to a screen with the clockwork logo and get stuck.

I can turn it on to the screen with the multicolored X or the bootloader, that's it. How do I do a hard reset?

in the bootloader I think (dont take my rookie rooting words too serious) theres a hard reset menu under recovery. it will take you to another x and press volume up and power for the menu to pop up.
try fastboot a recovery image (either Amon Ra or CWM) and see if you can get back to recovery after that.
Well I'm assuming you already have a custom recovery since it came with CM and you've, as you said, flashed it (what exactly do you mean by that by the way? flashed another rom?). So all I can recommend is that you wipe a few times and try flashing a few different roms and hopefully one will boot. Not the best advice in the world but its always worked for me before and my N1 and my DEXT before hand when I've messed them up!
You still did not say what you flashed to your phone.
Anyways follow the restore to stock guide.
I don't know what this Droid manager thing is but don't use it. Install the sdk.....
