[Q] rooted Nook Color sound issue - Nook Color General

I am having the sound issue where sometimes I lose sound due to some unknown issue. In Linux I can usually restart the sound process by running
alsa-utils restart
A find on that does find an alsa folder as /system/usr/shared/alsa with shows the pcm file but whats the command in Android to try and restart it manually if there is no alsa-utils. I shouldn't have to reboot to get it restarted and it would be nice to create a shortcut to a script that would run when I lose sound.
I know some people have said it was a fault with some Nooks that needed returning, but I'm under the suspicion its something else causing it. Any suggestions?

It has been reported that 1.1.0 fixes the No sound after sleep issue.

Is there an autonooter for 1.1.0? I didn't think there was? Any update now would mess up my rooting of it. I'm also having intermittent reboots. Anyone seen that?

Are you on 1.01? If so, you might want to get ROM Manager from the market and install Clockwork recovery using Rom Manager. That way you have recovery if something goes south.
There is no current AutoNooter for 1.1. There are some ROM updates to rooted 1.1 but read the full thread so you know the problems if any before you try a 1.1 ROM.
If you don't want to update beyond 1.01 now use the SCRIPT solution to block the OTA altho reports say the OTA won't run on a rooted NC. Hope this helps.

So I took my Nook in to possible exchange it because some people said it was possibly a bad batch. I wiped it and went back to the stock image and when I took it in I was informed there were none ANYWHERE in the Phoenix valley. So something is definitely up. The person there said they are going to announce their own market! LAME! Give me a Froyo or Gingerbread update! Anyway the dude said I had to update to 1.1.0 to fix the problem and now I have to go down that rooting experience. <SIGH>

1.10 does indeed fix the audio problem.
However I have yet to find a rooted 1.10 image that has worked. Last time I tried (yesterday) gmail wouldn't work, market refused to download and my nook reported corruption and forced a erase & deregister / clear data upon itself...

[Q] Nook Randomly Rebooted into older firmware

Weird problem here, not sure if anyone else has seen this issue. I was running the rooted firmware 1.1 (and a 950Mhz UV/OC kernal) for the better part of the day today. After rebooting a couple of times to 'fix compatibility' with Spare Parts, I accidentally hit the 'Lend Book' app. It started to load the app, gave some kind of Barnes authentication error, and the Nook just shut down. When it rebooted, it started in the recovery screen for a few seconds, and then it loaded up the old 1.0.1 software, with no custom apps other than Market and Rom Manager. Luckily I had a backup from earlier in the day, but what gives? Is there something I did wrong to cause the nook to default to an older software?
This is being discussed in the 1.1 Flash ROM thread as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932145&page=38
A temp fix I figured out is the "freeze" the program "DeviceManager" in Titanium Backup. That will prevent it from rebooting and resetting. I dont know what else it affects but you definitely cant use the B&N shop.
I guess I will have to use this method until someone finds a real fix as the ones on this forum dont block the authorization error.

market canno't run after upgrade to 1.1.0 with

nookcolor 1.0.0 with official update to 1.0.1 then with autoroot, that enable android market, and run smoothly
after update to 1.1.0 use the following rom [ROM] Nook Color V1.1.0_r2, market won't run anymore, I tried to
use http://market.android.com to install new apps, but it doesn't work too. does anyone have the clue?
[ROM] Nook Color V1.1.0_r2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932145
tried to restore to origianl 1.0.0 rom, but it boot to Clockwork Recovery everytime
what do you mean market wont run? if you are getting the server error message just wait eventually it will work. it seems like with the new market, google is changing settings on peoples accounts which will block your device from accessing the market. i had the same problem but the next day it was gone.
if you tried to put your nook back to stock and now its only booting into CWR go to the developers thread and they have multiple ways to recover your nook
here
and here
To restore to stock you need to remove the SD card and then press and hold the power button until it powers off and then press to turn on, wait until the N appears and press and hold power until it turns off and then repeat this process for like 8 times or so and it will then update the firmware to stock.
Im seeing the same thing.. Ver 1.1.0 and get the Market Server error everytime i try to launch the Market.
I updated to 1.1 and then booted with Autonooter 3.0 image. The Market works fine setup wizard was all I needed and all my apps are there. So, it's not definitely not the B&N 1.1 update causing the problem.
Also couldn't get the market to run after upgrading to 1.1.0
Press the icon and it would flash a white screen then back to the app folder. Youtube was doing this as well and I was able to fix it by removing and reinstalling, but I can't do this with the market apparently (just keeps running the install then saying market not installed)
I tried to make anflashable evrsion of the vending.qpk but it didn't even run because I have no clue how to make flashable packages for CWR.
Any ideas? Kinda sux not having the market

Don't use CWN and that ROM then (not that there's anything wrong with it).
Backup anything you don't want to lose by copying it your computer in any way you can / want.
Instead try going back to stock like described here...
http://www.nookdevs.com/Flash_back_to_clean_stock_ROM
Then update to 1.1 from official B&N update found here...
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/nookcolor-support-software-update/379002520/?cds2Pid=35758
Then boot with AutoNooter 3.0 from here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=942424
Connect to WiFi and then just follow the setup wizard.
After that...run the market, agree to market terms and you're done!
FYI, I didn't have to use Youtube to get the Market to work. The Setup Wizard worked all on it's own.
Ok, let me rephrase. Any ideas on why I can't instal the market. Tips to get it reinstalled? I did this once on my phone and I had to remove all traces of the market first, hurt I can't remember where all the files and folders were located.
I like using CWR as it is what I am familiar with

Market runs -but not well...?
Total newbie - seamlessly rooted NC 1.1 yesterday - (so grateful to developers!)
One of the only problems I have encountered is with Market -- I've searched and searched these forums to see if anyone else is having a similar problem -- but have yet to find anything.
I am able to access Market, and download apps with no problem. The only issue is when I view anything in the Market, it only shows roughly 10 results in any list I view. If I do a search, it may indicate that there are 754 results but will only list 10-12 of the results. Not a dealbreaker of course but if there's a work around, or fix, I'd love to know.
TIA

Use AppBrain app. You're on older android market.
Took the gapps zip from the Monster package and removed all files except the contents of META-INF and the vending.apk and flashed in CWR, market back .

[Q] Color Nook 1.2 root

Anyone gotten the new ROM yet? I followed the instructions over at the this thread and it doesn't look like it worked.
The instruction that states "Once you are back up, you can use the browser to download and run .APK files from anywhere."..
When I go to the browser and try to select "Zeam-2.9.2.apk" or "Superuser.apk" which are mentioned in the post, I get an 'Unsupported file format'.
Sounds like something didn't work right, but I'm not sure what that is.. anyone here seen that problem?
I tried to post this in that thread, but didn't have access to it....
You can install without unrooting on 1.1 version only. 1.0 and 1.01 need to be unrooted. Once the update is installed, you can use this hack (hamncheese's) to kinda root the new stock froyo version, but it is not a real rooting. As of 4:45pm pst no one has gotten a working root for the new 1.2 version. Give it a couple of days and they will have a method to totally root the nook on the new version. Or, you can run dual boot and be happy for the time being until they get the new root patch.
......
I probably should have been clearer.. my bad.. I did try hamncheese's kinda root, but it didn't look like it worked.

You and me both.......... LOL I d give it a couple of days maybe tomorrow they will have the root patch figured out... Tell you wife it has been only 24 hours......... XDA Devs are fast but sheesh....... they need a little time......
I was unable to do this. It attempted to install, then rebooted, then attempted installation, then rebooted... I unrooted, did a full restore and allowed the update. Not so impressed to be honest with the stock Froyo. Seriously considering going back to rooted 1.1.
Read the thread, it sure does not work hope someone comes up with an answer. Thanks
Just got my Nook and had it updated in the store. The guy says, "it should have lots of other apps plus Angry Birds".
Well, it is 1.2, but no apps and no Angry Birds... Figures.
I too hope someone gets 1.2 Root-able soon.
I sideloaded 1.2 and in the "shop" section, you can "buy" Angry Birds. It's $2.99. Its not RIO or Seasons but it is Angry Birds so maybe you can appease the wife until a root is released. I downloaded it (bought it) and it works great! Ken
anyone know when an new auto-root might be out?
Should be very soon. They got the market working in the manual root.

I know some say the market works but I am still having trouble with it. I cannot seem to install anything. I click the app to download and install, it "starts" the download but the progress bar doesnt fill. Then it suddenly fills, says installing, then dumps me back to the app's description page, with nothing installed. It reports that the "download unsuccessful" so I repeat the install again...no change
I am tempted to go back to 1.1 since 1.2 doesnt offer me anything new unless rooted....

need an autorooter
I have tried almost everything to root my 1.2 and am getting nowhere. I am a newbie but successfully rooted. bricked and wiped using instructions and a lot of head time. Just can't get my head arround it this time. I need to root so I can get the NetFlix app running. Thanks guys for your hard work.

Forget about running netflix unless you are willing to flash the cyanogen rom. There are settings that you simply cannot change (at this time) without switching to a different rom. I dont know what to tell you other than to follow the directions others have already posted. The problem with the cyanogen rom is that it does not put the nook to sleep properly when the screen is turned off, so the battery life drains like a leaky faucet. But, I think they have finally started to figure that out so I think that it should be added to one of the next iterations. Once it does, I will happily switch over to using that rom, especially now that the nook app allows magazines etc.
UPDATE ON FAILED INSTALLS: Turns out that only SOME applications do not install correctly, I have been able to install others from the android market place and amazon market place. Angry birds (any version) is one that will NOT install. Any tips? I have definitely used an sd card properly with no change.

That is not correct; with rooted stock 1.2 it is quite simple (especially with Root Explorer).
As for installing Angry Birds, if you are on rooted stock 1.2, try downloading it WITHOUT the SD card mounted.
interesting
Interesting, I will try to enable netflix by changing the file using this method:
http://reviewhorizon.com/2011/05/how-to-watch-netflix-on-nook-color/
I had read a post that mentioned I needed to use ES File explorer to access the file. ES File explorer didnt want to cooperate and complained about my rom, and i figured I need to be running a different rom.
As for the angry birds, I have tried installing with and without the sd card and not had any luck.

when you first install an app, it should ask you what you want to install it with. One option is "Android Package Installer" and that's the one you want. I chose the other one the first time around and ended up restoring and rechoosing. The other package installer (i think it's called nook something or other) does not allow you to select the permissions for the program, and thus, will not install the applications properly.
To test and see if that is the issue, try to install an app... if it comes up with the permissions for the app upon install, then that is probably not the issue. On the other hand, if it immediately just says failed, then you may have chosen the wrong package installer.
also,
For problems with large file install errors, such as angry birds, try installing the kernel in the this thread... that's what worked for me. Alternatively, if you want to install angry birds, etc, then you can copy the apk over to internal memory, take the sd card out, and then install it. (this kernel makes that unnecessary though)
Rooting nook is easy when using the CM7 Mod. You can get the market working with out problem and would be able to run most application and games. I had raging thunder 2 running with out problem.
The thing that I don't like on it is that, CM7's replacement of the stock softkeys (navigation buttons on the buttom) seems to be designed for mobile phones as they are small buttons.
So i unrooted my nook but would be trying this link and see what i can get:

[How To] rooted B&N (1.3) with market access working .... no really.....it's working.

[How To] rooted B&N (1.3) with market access working .... no really.....it's working.
My goal - a rooted 1.3 stock device that had full market access back the way 1.2 worked w/ market prior to the update.
I'll preface this by saying I've tried nearly everything from almost every post in XDA in the last month, but I still had no market access and had to side-load all my apks. I get the feeling that there are quite a few of us that tried manulNooter and various forms of tweaks but are still w/out market access so it is for us that I write this.
I read this today and with a slight tweaking of the steps, I now have ROCK SOLID full market access on the first try.
I'll flat out say that all of the work can be chalked up to other people's time and effort, it's only the steps that worked for me I'm outlining here.
Beforehand:
Make sure you have a bootable CWM card (linky)
Make sure you have updates 4.6.18 and 4.6.16a.
Get the B&N 1.3 update here since you're going to revert your NC back to stock
START:
1) Before updating to 1.3 firmware you are required to do a complete wipe (which requires an aborted power-up [simply hold power button down during the launch process] 8 times in a row - or MUCH easier: the following command using adbWirless ).
adb shell
echo -n -e "\x08\x00\x00\x00" > /rom/devconf/BootCnt
reboot
Click to collapse
2) I waited for the whole B&N setup after the wipe and I went through the steps of registering the device to my B&N account, then I did a factory reset at the "Erase and Deregister the device". It relaunches B&N one more time. After restarting I simply shut down the device before registering it again.
3) I then plugged in my Nook via. USB cable to my PC. I copied the 1.3 update to the root folder of the NC via. the USB cable. You can obtain the 1.3 update here if you didn't earlier.
4) I unplugged the USB. After 2 min. the NC recognized the update, and it did it automatically. It went through a full boot and I then shut down the NC.
5) I put in my CMW SD card with 4.6.18 and 4.6.16a on it. I then plugged in my USB cable into my Nook again to force the launch of CMW
6) In the CMW backup menu, I launched from zip file the 4.6.18, then right afterwards, the 4.6.16a nooters.
7) I shut down the NC, removed the CMW card, and did a regular launch.
8) I chose ZEAM launcher as default
9) I went into ROM manager and fixed permissions.
10) I went into the Market, signed in, and accepted the info, and saw the full, beautiful market populate and I'm good to go.
Hopefully this is a fix that works for everybody.....
(and yes - I know there's a separate thread on how to re-root after 1.3, but it's more of a troubleshooting thread at this point and frankly there's SO much conflicting info. in there I thought it prudent to start a new thread)

Thks - yes - 4.5.18 - and fwiw, while I was super-happy about the progress - I turned off the NC last night and on launch this morning I'm stuck in a boot loop at the NC logo. Looks like I'm moving to CM7 and use the LCD density method to get market access. SO disappointing.

Thanks for giving this a shot and posting your experience. I am hoping that one of the smart developer types will work on a Manualnooter (let's say 4.7.0) that will take us from stock 1.3 to root with a fully functional Market. Please, I know you are out there.
By the way, if you load CM7 with a -200 nightly or later then you will not need the LCD density fix as it has already been incorporated. Happy hunting!

THANK YOU SWEET JESUS
I decided to revert to stock and every time I turned my nook off, there was no return. Every time I reflashed, after I nootered I updated everything from the market. I spent 2 hours trying to find the reason as to why I kept getting bootloops.
This fixed it.

There is a fix to allow updated flash, can't remember which thread but after going through it I have updated to flash v11 without issue. I also got the (latest) market working by going into titanium backup and doing a data wipe of the market app.
Well, I followed all the given instructions, even bobzdar's method after reflashing for the 5th time. I still cannot get full market access. Even amazon market cuts me off. I've come to the conclusion that my only solution will be to move on to cm7. Honestly though, I prefer the stock rom over cm7.
All I want is cut the rope, and boat browser. Is that too much to ask for? lol

For whatever reason, the market took a while to load the first time, but now it works whenever I go into it. Try opening it up and doing a search for something and see what happens. I did a search for flash after running the flash fix to go right to the updated v11 and it took 30 seconds to a minute for the search to go through, but once it did the market has worked normally since. It was odd, but what kicked the whole thing off was doing the data wipe in titanium backup and all of a sudden it auto updated flash and a few other things (indicating market was working), which necessitated doing the flash fix through CWM etc. Now everything is working properly, hopefully it's just working slowly like it was for me and you just have to kind of kick start it by doing a search.
Thanks for the detailed steps, and to bobzdar for his tips. I too was having the "Nook Col" problem even after having done the flash trick, so I started all over and all is working...
EXCEPT, now I can't download my B&N books. I get this error: "Unable to Download: Internal error: Exception executing the command".
I did update superuser among other things, not sure if that made any difference. It won't let me install the Nook app thru the Market, either.
Any suggestions? I'd like to read my books and would prefer NOT to do this all over again LOL.

Well, evry time I did those steps, the market homepage/top apps or whatever seemed to show up blank, saying "No items found" or something like that.
I just decided to go back to 1.2. I like the new market better anyway.

New book or one already in your library? I just downloaded a book from my library without issue but I don't know if I've tried to download a new book since getting the market working again.

Already in the library. I have about 12 and can't dl any of them. Haven't tried to buy a new book yet, but I doubt that will work either.
It's frustrating because I was w/o the Nook for several days, did all this stuff and it works well other than this and limited market apps which I can live with.
I may have to go thru the whole process again and make sure I dl everything before I apply the hacks.

[Q] Rooted Nook HD+ boot problem

A question for any intellectual Android/Nook-addicts out there...
Basically, I've rooted my Nook HD+ (Numberous times now) and have experience rooting android devices in the past and have had no problems. I used the CWM method - installed universal root on factory stock (And afterwards, 2.1.0 stock just to see if it fixed the problem... it didn't) and extras (Tried not installing extras twice also, didn't make a difference)
Basically, I've learnt the hard way that eight resets on boot and the device hard-resets to factory stock. The first Root Bootup is fine (The bootup after removing the CWM sdc) and, after turning it off and on again, so is the second bootup... But the third one is where the problem occurs. I power on as normal, and the standard 'Nook' screen appears as it begins to boot...
It then proceeds to resetting itself eight times - never getting past the 'Nook' screen that appears at the start of every bootup, therefore causing a hard factory reset.
I've tried using the CWM recover method to the OS I used before rooting the nook originally, and there doesn't seem to be any problems if the device isn't rooted. I've also just let it update itself from factory version to current version - and it works fine with that also.
Perhaps this is common and I'm just a plain idiot. I honestly can't find any answers - so if it is common, sorry for wasting your time!
Thanks for your time!

Do you have some apps being automatically installed by Play Store? Sometime people have their settings set so that happens. Then a root app gets installed and makes some changes to /system and causes a reset. Go to Play Store and tell it not to automatically install or upgrade apps.`

No apps that automatically download that i can see. But you're likely onto something - I do install all the apps manually (No matter how menial) (Going through the list, hitting install for each of them) before manually logging into each one afterwards. I do use a few root apps - no ad-versions to avoid those annoying popups, Ultrabox, Superuser, Pimp my Android and Root Browser to name most, if not all of them.
I'm going to have to do things the awkward way now, installing each app, setting them to the setting I want for them, and seeing what happens. I have a mild suspicion it's a setting on Pimp my Android...
I'll let you know if I sort it. Thanks for the suggestion :cyclops:

Why are you installing superuser? It is already installed with the universal root. That may be it too.
Edit: And some of the apps I put on there are old on purpose. Like Root Browser. I have it set so that the free version is ad free. If you update it, the ad free goes away.

I am VERY sorry it's taken me so long to reply! Even though I've only just joined, I should have done it long before now.
I found the problem - it was 'Pimp my Android' app. I was experiencing something called 'boot loop' - so much for my research skills for such a common problem. I fiddled about with my usual settings - and found some that cause it to get stuck like that, even when they're set not to activate on startup!
Tis' all working now. Everything else seems to be just peachy! You were right, thanks for your help
