[Q] Kernal question - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone,
I have a pretty noob question that I've researched and can't seem to get a good answer for.
I'm running the latest FireFly ROM and I was looking into installing SetiroN's kernal also for a little overclock capability.
What's the process for flashing this kernal? Do I need to restore my phone or anything before doing this? Can I just throw it on my phone and use the SGS Kernal app to install it? All apps and system data are backed up at the moment.
Thanks guys!

Remember to backup your original kernal first

Alright everything went very smoothly. I only have one other question which this may not be the best place to ask it but I'll try my luck anyways.
SetiroN's kernal says something about a universal lagfix (stuzpy's or something) and it tells you how to configure it but I can't seem to find how to do that. Is there supposed to be a new app for it? I don't have one.
Thanks again
EDIT: nevermind i found it! it was in CWM recovery

[Q] Captivate lag fix help

i'm loving my new Captivate, and i'm glad i made the switch to android. but one thing i wasn't expecting is the lag issues. i see that xda has more than a few solutions for me. but like i said this is my first android phone and the transition has been a little rocky. can anyone walk me through the one of the 1 click lag fixes? i'm on a mac so i'm already starting at a disadvantage. is there anyway i can do this whole thing via terminal emulator right on my phone?
Thanks
First, If you have access to a windows computer, try flashing this rom. its fixed alot of issues for me. including the lag.

If not follow the thread below.
but for the busybox step sideload this one cuz you need busybox 1.17.1(I've uploaded it here for you-http://www.mediafire.com/?z89f7zt9kyxb7n3)[the one in the market causes issues because its missing some commands)
follow the rest of the steps in this thread. this has worked the best for a few people I know. -http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747397
OneClickLagFix V2.2 Install Error
Not sure if this is the place for my question but any who here goes:
I applied the lag fix as directed to my captivate froyo 2.2 and got an error. "Hit an error, undoing lagfix! OneClickLagFix V2.2+ failed with erro: Could not mont loopback device/dev/loop5! mount: Device or resource busy
What suggestions as to what I should do to correct this and continue the installation with OneClickLagFix? Delay my last...I found the answer I was seeking. OneClickLagFix V2.2 working as adverstised. Last benchmark test before OCLF V2.2 was 948 and after OCLF 1830.
Nice!!
Hi guys i have a samsung captivate . I installed froyo on it. Build number FROYO.UCJI6
I notice that when i am in applications and i browsing through i get some lag and it sometimes sticks for a slight second.. How can i fix this? i am a noob at these stuff..
I used the juiced ROM and it's great. Battery life rules and the lagfix is great.
try moving all the apps back to the internal memory, those apps that u moved to sdcard must go back to phone memory before applying the oclf

Hi guys I am new in here, dont' know if here is the right place for this question... well here it goes...
I had updated my captivate with the official UCKF1 2.3.3 gingerbread... i want to install voodoo lagfix, but I dont know if it is possible for me to install it in my rom... I am rooted..
TIA
cant use voodoo lagfix on KF1 for now period. its all kernel related and once/if samsung/att releases the kernel source then and only then can ext4 be implemented
to be honest, if your a new captivate user you shouldn't be flashing gb roms, flash to stock using odin and flash 2.2 and 2.1 roms since they are the most stable ones yet...in my personal opinion if ur a noob and want to get rid of most of the lag in your phone flash serendipity 6.4...super easy flash through cwm and it's stunningly fast, crisp and stable as hell...

Newbie here. Froyo 2.2 question.

I have the samsung captivate at 2.1 and it is rooted and has sideloading enabled where I can install non-market apps from my usb card. I want to update to Froyo 2.2. I have been reading but getting different answers about rooting and sideloading Froto 2.2 original leak. Also I have backed up my phone.
1.Can Froyo 2.2 original leak be rooted and sideloaded with this file?(superoneclickv1.5.4)
2.Is this the file for the original Froyo 2.2?(I897UCJI6-OCD-REV02-Low-designgears)
I want to say this is my first android phone and these things are nice. I used to only use windows mobile phones, but now...... hello android.
I would like to say thank you to all the people for the guides and help that make it possible for me to play with this fun phone.

To be honest, I think the latest cognition ROM is way better than the leaked froyo. Faster, smoother, just better. And cognition of course has sideloading enabled.
Coginition question?
I read a little about the coginition roms. They seem really nice but could you answer a few questions.
1.Can you start out with the lastest rom first?
2.I read that it is really hard to go back to your original flash enev if you have a backup.(I did make a backup.)
3.I am not being a smartass but, could you please answer my first questions in my first post please.
Thank you for replying so fast.

If you update to the latest Cognition roms, you wouln't even have to root and enable side-loading.Everything is already built in.

Yes that is the leaked JI6 Froyo firmware, and is also one click odin.
Thank you
Thank you for answering my question.
If i was you I would leave 2.1 and add side loading, lagfix remove blootware and you got a pretty good set up, I have flashed most of the Roms here and I wont say with one is the best becouse each one has it flaws and I think just the leaked Frito has the most bugs tho design gears is basing his cog on it so he fixes stuff as he goes

[Q] Noob Question

Ok so I was looking into methods on how to speed up my captivate and OCLF came up. I did it and it worked great but as I read on , many said to not use it as it was outdated. Is there something similar that uses a faster file system that I can use? Stock 2.2, Rooted
Eh. Maybe...
If you want really fast speed and dont mind flashing, i would flash firefly 3.0, its pretty safe just make sure you have 100% charge when you do it. Then get the OC/UV kernal onix 2.0.5 and boot into recovery and change the file system to ext4...
Any questions? Make another post here i've already done this and can help you out.
I'm kind of hesitant on flashing a rom :/ is there any other way to do it?
Voodoo lagfix doesn't have a fix for froyo yet. Got any love for flashing a kernal?
The extisz Kernal would be for you It has the Voodoo Fixes and everything. You would just need to get the modded 3e recovery and then get CWM and flash the .zip you can download from this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988805
You could always go back to JF6 and mod everything on it, and voodoo would work on that
OR you could just do OCLF its going to be a little increase, not much because the filesystem changes to ext2 not ext4, voodoo does ext4 which is faster
Search for any KB1 kernel in the Dev section. If you want you stay as true to stock as possible, use Supercurio's stock KB1 + Voodoo kernel. It's nothing fancy, but it works really well with stock KB1.
Existz's KB1 kernel is also good. Overstock KB1 1.3 is another.
Sorry for the really nooby question but what is a kernel? And if I flashed a rom or a kernel how would I get back to stock if I ever wanted to? Also does my data carry over from rom to rom?

In short, the kernel is what talks to the phone and how fast it functions. If you flashed a ROM or kernel you could get back to stock by using the Odin one-click downloader, and yes your data carries over. You will not loose data unless the modem you are using for a paticular ROM is not very good in your area...which can also be swapped out for a better one.
But you should really read some of the helpful guides about flashing ROMs.. it will answer a lot of your questions, and future questions
Lol, he wasn't talking about internet data, yes your data can be backed up and restored rom to rom with an app called titanium backup.

Its all user preference. While I can say this is the fastest ROM my phone has ever run someone else could say the same about the ROM they are running. Best bet is to try them for yourself and make a decision based on what YOU like.

[Q] Rogers Captivate,Rooting Questions

Hello! First off thank you for taking sometime to help me out with a few questions about rooting my new Samsung Galaxy S. I've been itching to root it ever since I watched some lag fix videos in aw as to how much better the phone seems to perform, before I do go through with it I have a few questions hoping to be answered. Also last thing my device is up to date with Froyo 2.2.
First off I will be using this : (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682) to root my device, will this work fine?
Second questions is if I root my device and a gingerbread comes out as an official update can I go about updating it normally through Kies?Same goes for google updates like the new market update. (I am not interested in changing the ROM at the moment)
-Will Kies still recognize the device normally as I use it for importing music and such.
Lastly which lagfix should I use? Voodoo? It seems that Voodoo is meant to work with the GT-I9000 or does it work with the captivate too? Or do I use the oneclicklagfix on the Market?
Thank you so much for taking the time to help me and if there's any thing about the phone you need to know please do ask and Ill gladly provide you with extra information.
Thanks again!
Ibby
Yes, their is also a galaxy one click root or use AIO toolbox.
It will be best to remove root be fore updating to 2.3, market update will work as normal. For kies it should work as normal, i don't know though i just mount my device.
Voodoo is better and safer but it only comes on custom kernels. Since you don't care for flashing roms. The only way you can get it is (if its still around) a stock kernel with voodoo lagfix. *Voodoo works on most all the galaxy s family including the captivate.
One click lag fix not as safe, plus the developer has stopped developing and supporting it.
Why post the same question twice? under 2 different profiles? its kind of a waste

Super one click is what I used to root my Rogers Captivate running 2.2. The other methods the second poster said will most likely work as well.
I am assuming the Kies update to 2.3 will not work with root enabled. The new market can be updated very easily, just find the apk somewhere on the forums and install it directly, it worked fine for me.
I am not really a fan of OCLF, it works for the first little while but seems to slow down after a while (or maybe it's all in my head?). There is a voodoo injected stock rogers kernel somewhere on the forum, I dunno where but I found it and then used Neldar's SGS Kernel flasher (available on the market) to backup my original kernel and flash the voodoo injected one. It worked great and I now have voodoo lag fix. I am looking at changing to speedmod at some point in the future.

Going from a Gingerbread ROM to another Gingerbread ROM

I realize this is a pretty simple question. I'm not asking this without trying to find the answer on my own. I spent about three hours trying to find out a definite way to do this, but I never found a concrete answer.
Anyways...
I'm on Serendipity VII Build 2 Kernel and I want to try out another Gingerbread ROM. I have been having some stability issues lately. How would I go about flashing to a new ROM (step by step of possible)?
Thanks in advance.

Unless otherwise specified in the rom thread, all you have to do is go into recovery, delete cache and dalvic cache and delete user data. Then just flash the rom you want... I don't know what kernel serendipity comes with but you might need to disable lagfix if it is enabled depending on what rom you are moving to.

The serendipity kernel is based on xcaliberhands kernel. If you are going to another rom with that kernel just flash away. If you are going to a rom with the talon kernel you need to turn off the lag fix first and then flash then turn it on after. Turning on and off your lag fix always works best if you use the advanced features in CWM. I have gone from cog 5 to serendipity 7 to mosaicV to serendipity 6.4 and back to mosaicV, and have not needed to go to stock. Gonna give Darky rom a try when I'm done posting. I should be able to just flash right over no problems because the kernels are the same darkcore. Just verify if lag fix is on or off in CWM. Also check which version of CWM the kernel uses. With sgs kernel flasher you can and a little finess you can avoid odin all together.

If you don't want to flash bootloaders (as does the link above) or your phone doesn't like 1 clicks, use the kf1 in my sig. No bootloaders involved, 1 click or full odin, your choice.
