[Q] Root with upgrade 1.1.0? - Nook Color General

Hi,
Just got my NC and manually updated to 1.1.0. Then discovered that rooting instructions with Autonooter don't cover the update. I can follow instructions but I'm not a developer type -- so:
Is there a handy guide to rooting that will work with 1.1.0?
And/or: Is there a way to restore the NC to 1.0.0 and start from there?
Thanks -- I really have searched for this but I'm not finding it, or not understanding that I've found it when I have

yeah, go back to 1.0.1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931720

Thanks -- that worked. All rooted now!

Lots and lots of reading will supply you with several answers.
Option 1: (from http://nookdevs.com/Installing_the_...e_.2Fsystem_directory_to_out_of_the_box_stock). "You can power off the nook, and then interrupt the boot process by holding down the power button eight times". This should then put you back to 1.0.0, and then you can follow the guides for rooting 1.0.1.
Option 2: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10948752#post10948752. This thread details how to boot a workable copy of Froyo your SD card. There's other references in that thread, and others in the development section, on how to restore to the default 1.0.0 image.
The sure fire way to go back to 1.0.1 would be to follow the steps in:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931720
Otherwise, since you say it was upgraded to 1.1, so I assume your nookcolor was 1.0.0/1.0.1 out of the box, I think you can use the following:

Hey guys,
I am about to buy a nook and wanted to ask if i bought it in about a week would it come in box with 1.1, and if it is, is there any way to downgrade from stock 1.1, because all of these downgrades make it sound like the nook can only be downgraded from whatever the stock version is.
Thanks to everyone who can help

OTA 1.1 and nooter

My bookeeper gave me her nook to root. Hers has 1.1.0 already installed. Use the same instructions for 1.0.1 to root? Her nook is a virgin.
thanks
You'll need to revert back to 1.0.1 or 1.0.0 before rooting. Then you can flash 1.1 on top of it after you nooter it. Go look in the Development forum. It's all there.
Well I've used these steps before (on my own)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931720
But I don't really want to wipe hers. Hmm..
I guess I could wipe it. She just has books and I assume B&N will re-download her purchases once she signs in again.
do a nandroid and Titanium backup. You should be able to get everything back fairly easily.
I don't think titanium works on a virgin.
No big deal, I just formatted hers. She can get her books again.

[Q](solved) Newbie !!! Best route from 1.0 rooted to 1.1 rooted

I purchased the NC last week and it came with 1.0 software. I have rooted with the 1.0 software and everything is awesome.
I have been reading feverishly on here but am a little confused. Can someone point me to the steps to go from rooted 1.0 to rooted 1.1. I am looking forward to bringing nook to BN store and use the free in store reading for an hour.
I have been searching on here and just a little confused and how to get to this next rooted software.
Thanks,
Mike
EDIT: IGNORE! I see you want 1.1. Sorry, this can be deleted by mod. This is why they don't let new posters, post links.
you can flash 1.1 right over 1.0 apparently. It didn't work well for me. If I were you, I'd go to 1.0.1 first and then to to 1.1.

From what I understand, you need to first update to 1.0.1. Then, auto-nooter. After that's done, you can apply Decadence's 1.1.0 pre-rooted update. You need to be on 1.0.1 to auto-nooter before you update to 1.1.0.
Hope that helps!
So it has to be a specific 1.1 right? I have a 1.0.1 rooted and tried to install the 1.1 from the B&N site, but nothing happened. My nook just restarted and deleted the zip file from the nook's root directory with no update taking place.
If you want 1.1 AND be rooted, then you'll need to start with a rooted NC that is on 1.0.1 or 1.0.0. Then flash 1.1 with the file provided in the thread below.

Rooting 1.1 nook color
I just got my Nookcolor (with 1.0.1) and was planning on rooting it, when a couple days ago I turned it on and it upgraded itself to 1.1. I just tried to use the instructions to root it using the SD card img (for 1.0.1), and no huge surprise that it did not seem to work.
I am assuming the procedure at this point (until someone comes out with a 1.1 .img) that I need to downgrade back to 1.0.1 before I have can root it.
Is this possible? Is there a procedure for it?
I also have seen very touchy typing on the virtual keyboard, and would like to use instructions I have seen to recal the touchscreen (but it requires root, of course). If I don't have a way to do this I might just return it to B&N.
I do like it a lot better than my eInk nook.

Yes. You have to revert back to 1.0.1 first. Lots of threads that tell you how. I'm about to turn in for the night so don't feel like searching. But go to the development forum and find the 1.0.1 recovery and then use that to revert back. PM me if you need help.
Sent from my LogicPD Zoom2 using XDA App
Thanks to all. I will give this a try and report back.

That is exactly what I did.
UPDATE: IIRC the pre-requisite is to be on 1.0.1.

1.0.1? I thought I could use this from rooted 1.0? If not, how do I get to 1.01?

See this thread for a couple different approaches
Just looking to confirm I can go from 1.0 to 1.1 . I thought I have read some posts indicating that. If anyone has done this, please let me know if I am on right track.
Thanks,
Mike
I am sorta lost also, I have read a few threads and each one says a different thing. I have a stock 1.0.0, what would be the absolute easiest of doing this, also do I need to leave the SD card in the nook? (borrowed it from my Verizon fascinate)
To go from stock 1.0.0 to 1.1:
Download 1.0.0 to 1.0.1 patch http://images.barnesandnoble.com/presources/download/nookcolor/v1.0.1/Sideload_update.zip Source: http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_Rooting
To use patch, follow directions here: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/noo...igLink-_-k244266-_-j12871747k244266-_-Primary It says 1.1.0 but it's the exact same steps
You now have 1.0.1 no root.
Download Automooter 2.12.25 and follow directions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872490 THIS WILL DELETE EVERYTHING ON THE SD CARD
You now have 1.0.1 rooted NC.
To go from 1.0.1 to 1.1.0 go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932145
There may be better ways, do everything at your own risk, hopefully it won't cause a natural disaster, etc.
Note: I only have experience going from 1.0.1 to 1.1.0. But going from 1.0.0 to 1.0.1 seems trivial.
After you do all that download "ROM Manager" from the Market. Open it. First option is Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, click it if you don't have a current recovery (Can't remember if one of the above steps installs it...). ClockworkMod makes it easy to backup and restore your setup. Click on Backup Rom, it will reboot and backup the rom to the sd card. If you ever mess something up, you can recover that rom so you won't have to go through 1.0.0 to 1.1 again.
I tried updating to 1.01 per directions and nothing happened. I then tried to install zip through clockwork recovery and it started but said installation aborted.
I am having a tough time upgrading from 1.0 root to 1.01 root. I have followed directions and struggling. The update zip say's installation aborted when tried thorough rom manager sd card. Nothing happened when I transferred to nook drive via usb cable. I am at a complete loss now.
Are you sure the NC is 1.0.0? Look under Settings > Device Info > About Your NookColor
The file is exactly named as above? Not Sideload_update-1.zip? It's in the root (not in any subfolder) of the NC, not on the sd card?
Try rebooting, then poking around the menus to see if it updates. Reboot as in hold power button down till it says "Do you want to turn your device off?", hit yes, it's off, then turn back on.

[Q] Rooted 1.0.1 to Rooted 1.1

Probably a dumb question, but I've looked and looked on the threads and haven't found the answer. I have an Auto-nootered NC 1.01. I have been avoiding the auto update to 1.1 like the plague (until the AN for 1.1 was ready ). Now that it's here, what do I need to do before running AN 3? Can I head to B&N and force the update to 1.1 - then run AN 3?
Do I have to fall back to 1.0, go to 1.01, then to 1.1, then AN3?
One other quickie - if I use Astro to back up all my glorious apps now, can I just save that micro SD and restore them from that after I reroot using AN3 and reinstall Astro? Thank you!!!
You need to look more carefully, then. There are tons of posts about this. You can us AN 3 if you are already on 1.1. so you can let your device update or you can update it manually. Then you can use AN 3. Shouldn't need to fall back to 1.0 or 1.0.1. Don't know about Astro. Don't use it.
I prefer using the clockwork/Rom download way of getting to rooted 1.1.0
It was very simple and I don't believe my device needed to reinstall anything.

[Q] rooting my nook color 1.3.0

I am wanting to root my nc 1.3.0 and am having a hard time knowing what is right and what is bad. I tried downloading somethings and its says this or that is or can be harmful to my computer and then I get lost. I just want someone to tell me in normal everyday language how I can root this nook. And please provide step by step instructions. I am using a window 7 64 bit computer and have a 16gb samsung micro scandisk card.
thanks
brian
If you look in the forums there is plenty of information on how to root your Nook Color.
The warning about downloading something may harm your computer is a warning from the browser. If you get lost by that you may want to considering ordering a bootable SD card. No tech skills required, just pay $30 and get Gingerbread via SD.
"have a 16gb samsung micro scandisk card."
What do you intend to have the card used for?
Follow the instructions in this thread:
[NC][1.2][1.3] ManualNooter 4.6.16
The instructions are step by step. Just to clarify for the instructions, if you are on stock 1.3, you need to run ManualNooter 4.5.18 and ManualNooter 4.6.16; no reboot between, just run one after the other in CWR.

OMFG - really? Of all the f'ing things I think I tried, I don't believe that I ran 18 then 16 w/out a reboot. I think I tried all other combinations including running fix permissions from ROM manager in between, but how the hell did I miss something that obvious?!!!
To try again, think I just need to re-flash 18 then 16, or do I have to revert back to 1.3, then go 18 then 16?
[edit] turns out flashing 18 then 16 w/out reverting back to 1.3 stock does absolutely nothing.

My Experience Rooting
My NC came with 1.2.
I followed the direction at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054027
I first upgraded from 1.2 to 1.3
Followed the rest of the procedure.
Everything went fine until I opened the Market. Many applications were not listed. Applications such a the Dolphin Browser and my application, BASIC! + SQL. Reading the thread showed me that I was not alone. It seemed that no one was able to get the full Market using this procedure.
I trudged through the thread looking for ways to get the Market to work correctly. I tried many of the suggestions. Nothing worked to get me access to the full Market. I finally came to the conclusion that 1.3 + Gingerbread was a Donut (Pun intended).
I decided to revert reset my NC to the factory original factory 1.2 ROM. I did this by following the instruction at:
http://www.nookdevs.com/Flash_back_to_clean_stock_ROM
I used the method of interrupting boots. I found that I only had to interrupt three boots. The Nook then proceeded to completely return to a fresh 1.2 all in one step. The Nook started up just like it came out of the box.
I then went back to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054027
And followed the procedure for 1.2 but instead of loading ManualNooter-4-6-16.zip, I used ManualNooter-4-6-16a.zip. The "a" version link can be found at:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17235819&postcount=1
(Note: I did not flash 4-5-18)
After executing the re-flash procedure, I rebooted into 1.2 with FroYo.
All Market applications are not available. I was able to install Dolphin and my application.
Happy day.
Rooting my nook 1.3
I tried following this instructions and I failed. I am not computer smart, so most of the language you use and the other language the articles use are foreign to me. Can someone please speak simple English and walk with me step by step? I can give you my number, I really need some simple help here.
I know what you mean about all the jargon. It gave me head aches when I started this a couple of weeks ago.
Since I made that post, I found a procedure that is simple and works very well. It worked the first time I tried in. It gave me a perfectly functioning Android tablet.
Try it.
