so i went to download mode and flashed back stock with odin i896 rogers,
rooted the phone was going to install firefly rom. But when i downloaded rom manager and tried to do the captivate clockworkmod flash it doesnt work. I have tried using a update.zip and everything from 3e recovery pressed the reinstall packages doesnt work. I have tried to copy the recovery file to the system/bin and stuff, still doesnt work. Any way to fix this.
Also, i saw in the reviews everybody with a captivate is having issues with that TODAY.
anybody know how to fix this? I have tried a recovery file replacement and all that doesnt work? Anybody? I have read other threads about this those files dont work...
If you have 3rd recovery issues. You need either get into download mode and odin to your stock firmware or use odin to flash a kernel with recovery built in using the standalone odin. I know that firebird offers an odin flashable kernel which you could use.
is their a way to downgrade from 3e to 2e, to be able to flash? for rogers 2.2?
What are you even talking about, in terms of 3e and 2e?
Just flash back to stock ROM, put update.zip in your root of storage, and once you've done that, reinstall packages TWICE, by now you should be in a green menu, this is the Clockwork Recovery menu. Using the volume keys and the power button, navigate to 'Install from .zip from sdcard', and select the ROM you want to install. Once you've done that, all you have to do is reselect it to confirm.
If that doesn't work, or it's telling you something funny when you try to install, your .zip is corrupt and you might need to redownload it.
I believe you can use sgs kernel flasher app to flash a new kernel. I would suggest which ever fire fly uses. This will fix your recovery and allow j you to flash the rom
i think this is a server issue with rom manager, because captivate cwm flash isnt working, i will try later.
If you have 3e recovery this won't make difference
this is a known issue of recovery 3e - signature issue.
you can do the followings for flashing the rom:
1. copy the update.zip to your sdcard root folder;
2. shut down your phone and use key combo to boot into recovery mode;
3. apply the change twice to get into cwm;
4. select your rom zip file and flash the rom;

if you are on 3e recovery...you can apply the update.zip a million times but it wont work .....
need to be on a modded 3e recovery that allows unsigned zips or on 2e recovery...

since he is on the stock rom, using key combo will get him into the stock recovery and apply the changes will work for him if using the correct update.zip.

not everyones 'stock' is 2.1 with 2e recovery....maybe he just got his phone from rogers and it had 2.2 on it already. considering in his first post he says hes already on stock rom and it has 3e recovery.....
to clear it up, im on rogers 2.2, i was on stock from kies then flashed to firefly with ease when i did the recovery file change, the problem i think is you know the first button u click in rom manager it isnt downloading the thing. Last time i downloaded it for captivate did the switch and worked, this time i think the server is offline.
i flashed from firefly to stock, the/now the recovery...^^^^^^^^

if you did the recovery file change so that you bypass 3e recovery signature verification, just drop the update.zip onto your /sdcard/
you dont need to use ROM manager for anything

OK here is what has caused issue...
Running stock.
Rooted using SuperOneClick.
Installed ROM Manager.
Flashed CWM for Captivate - successful.
Backup ROM - boots into what looks like stock recovery (3e).
I click reboot... Android with Yellow Triangle. Requires pull. No way around this. Tried factory reset.
Used ODIN to flash firmware... successful.
On reboot... back into recovery... click reboot and Android with Yellow Triangle.
Any ideas please!!!!???
PS... before going into recovery everytime it does a Movi-check thing and says stuff about media update, application update etc then ends up in Android System Recovery (3e)
Here is where you went wrong. You used CWM for the CAPTIVATE. And your phone is not a captivate SGH-I897
Are you in download mode? If so remove the usb cable when you boot into recovery.
Edit: isn't the i9010 just the Armani captivate?

I was in download mode when I used ODIN but then it reset at the end and the Galaxy S i9010 splash screen came up...
Then into the recovery...
I just need a way to get out of this damn recovery!
And... the i9010 I believe is the Armani Captivate. This is UK one.
some people had trouble with the i9010 rom on the captivate, im not gonna pretend to know why but maybe you can pm the guys from team komin or design gears who have worked with that rom in making it compatable with the i897, they might know something about the differences and inner workings. you are the first person i know of to try anything on the armani model.
install the update.zip package twice in a row.
stop giving newb answers, 3e recovery wont run an update.zip. he needs to flash a kernel with cmw or 2e patched in or a modified 3e recovery before he can think about cwm recovery,
but now his problems run deeper than that.

I've not downloaded any update.zip
Is it already on the phone?? I have not used the stock recovery manager for many moons!!
Anyway, I have managed to exit the loop. When the triangle came up I just kept tapping the menu button and then it reset.
Interestingly though... despite a "successful" flash via ODIN, I have all the apps preinstalled prior to flashing.
Is that right?
yes that is normal, the apps are on a different partition,
the update.zip is installed to your internal sd card when you go into rom manager and select "flash clockwork mod recover" but you still need to run the update.zip twice before you get into cwm
problem is that 3e recovery wont allow it so you need to flash a kernel with a different recovery first, then you can get into cwm, then you might be able to flash back to a proper kernel and access cwm from rom manager
Thanks Dani.
So just to be clear about where I am and where I go from here...
Back into clean JL1 firmware. Had to reroot. ROM Manager says CWM Recovery is installed but I end up straight at 3e.
Is there a way of removing the CWM it thinks is there or a quick way to get into CWM?
Thanks. A lot harder than my Nexus S was...

I thought he was on 2e. my mistake. There is a thread here in this forum including a modified 3e recovery that does not require digitally signed packages. Check it out.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213&highlight=recovery+modified
to be honest you are taking a risk because there are differences between this and a captivate.
normal proceedure is to root-install rom manager- reboot into recovery-"reinstall packages" -phone reboots into recovery again-"reinstall packages" then you are in clockwork mod
but with "3e" you have to root-install rom manager - flash alternate captivate kernel with clockwork mod patched in via oden/neldars kernel app.
the problem is that nobody knows for sure if you can run an i897 kernel or modified i9000 kernel on that phone permanantly. you are the Guinea pig, it might not boot, it might have random problems.
and if it doesn't work try flash to stock-root-install rom manager- flash captivate kernel with 2e/modified 3e recovery (look several pages back in the development section) - reinstall packages- phone reboots into recovery - reinstall packages- phone reboots into clockwork mod- flash proper kernel
big risk flashing kernels though, i'd talk to designgears about it first, he bricked a captivate with an armani rom if i remember right. and i mean hard bricked, no boot loop no download mode, no recovery mode! just black screen!

yeah i did that too. it was from the SBL.bin and boot.bin that was included with the rom from samsung.
it had nothing to do with kernel flashing.

the kernel from the armani worked fine with my captivate, but lacked recovery 2e or voodoo, so chrisryn made a kernel FROM the armani source for us to use on andromeda....my guess is that it will work fine for you.
hey all,
i have an i9000 that when i reboot to recovery, it ALWAYS goes back to recovery 3e which is a pain. I have to use odin to flash to another kernel temporarily to get 2e back to install a simple update, which then turns into a big complete reset flash when it shouldn't. Anyone know why this happens? I am have attempted with docrom ROMs with both voodoo and speedmod kernels which both include clockwork, but reboot to recovery just goes to 3e again instead of clockwork. do i nede to repartition (using odin and perhaps a PIT) or is this irrelevant and something else is up. My friend has the same phone and never had this problem.
Using Docrom JPJ with speedmod kernel and froyo 2.2.1 atm.
anyone help?
did you find any solutions?
I noticed this with my speed mod kernel.
I found that if you pressed the button combo to go into recovery, let the phone first boot, let all the buttons off and press them again and so on until it boots into cwm recovery.
Worth a try!
Do this when in recorvery:
Install update.zip iy should be on the second slot. If not go to the market and install rom manager. Then there should be a option down the menu that says flash clockwork mod. Do that, boot into recorvery and install update.zip. U may need to install yhe update a few times. Then you should have clockworkmod

Ok, below im going to suggest two different ways to accomplish this.
Before you try this, if you are currently on 2.2 you will run into a 3e security error when in recovery. This process must be done from 2.1 or you must use the 3e security work around if attempting from 2.2. Which is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=909213
For me, its easier to use odin and flash back to 2.1 and then load the rom from there than to mess with the whole recovery thing.
How To: Install clockwork recovery.
DOWNLOAD THIS FILE FIRST THEN FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW.
FILE: http://www.mediafire.com/?ve234hbg64ctcu0
1. Go to the download folder and rename clockworkrecovery.zip to update.zip. Mount your phone and drag the update.zip file into the root directory. It is ok to overwrite the update.zip you used before. When it is done copying turn off your phone.
2. Unplug your phone and hold down both volume buttons and the power button until a strange menu with blue items pops up. This is called the recovery menu.
3. Scroll using the volume buttons to the menu item titled "reinstall packages" and press the power button to select.
4. Your phone should restart and you should be at a green menu which is clockwork mod. Do whatever you need to do from here.
Let me say, this is probably an older version of CWM because I pulled it from this thread :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
It should work fine for flashing all 2.2 based roms but I do not have any say for the 2.3 roms as Ive never tried.
2nd way. Use odin to flash a kernel that already has the CWM recovery installed. This is a little more complicated than it sounds as some kernels are not compatible with some roms and you must check that before flashing. If you choose this method, you need to go find a kernel that works and understand how to use Odin before trying.

Hello.
ROM manager is unable to download clokworkmod recovery. Maybe because I'm in a "sanctioned country" CUBA and I have a lot of internet restrictions from both Google and my ISP.
My question is: Can I manually download clokworkmod recovery and copy it on the SD card and have ROM manager install it?
If the answer is yes: How? and where do I find Clockworkmod for the captivate?
i897 stock 2.1.1 rooted and unlocked.
Thanks.

just drop this on the root of your sdcard, reboot to recovery and reinstall packages twice. CWM will come up then

the one caveat to this ... make sure you have the 2e boot loader when you boot into recovery. The 2e bootloader is the stock bootloader that comes with froyo. 3e will require you to have the update packages signed, and therefore will need to downgrade to 2e before you can switch to CWM.

Wrong.
2e RECOVERY comes from firmware 2.1, which the OP stated he was on. Froyo comes with 3e recovery. Has nothing to do with bootloader, because the bootloaders are the same between eclair and Froyo.

GREAT. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
Working, one more question. I noticed three things:
1 - If I reboot to recovery again it goes into stock recovery (2e). Then I hit reinstall packages only once and ClockWorkMod comes up.
2 - If I delete the update.zip from the sd card CWM will not work.
3 - ROM Manager still says that CWM is not installed therefore is not working OK.
Is all this ok? Should I select: "Install sdcard:update.zip" while in CWM? Should I do something else?

That sounds pretty normal to me. If you are getting into CWM then thats all that really matters. The deal with ROM manager is that it doesnt work very well with our phones. But if you are trying to flash a custom ROM you can still do it without ROM Manager. However, you need to read up about the rom you want to flash because it is a slightly risky process. Its as risky as using ROM Manager and almost Russian roulette if you dont read.
But do not delete the update.zip after you install it. I dont know if it messes with the boot process of recovery mod but I do know its better to have that backup file on your SD card already if you run into a problem later on.
Don't bother with ROM manager. Its close to useless with SGS phones. Make sure your 3 botton combo works and you should be golden. Also making a jig isn't a bad idea also, just incase you do screw up and you get in a softbrick where your keycombos decide to not work.
Can anyone help link me or teach me how to set up my phone to get into Clockwork Mod Recovery mode? whenever i try to reboot into Clockwork, it just boots into 3e recovery. Try flashing a rom with CWM already baked into it.
And PLEASE DO NOT use ROM Manager. It doesn't work on the Captivate.

FFS... you are using rom manager.. it hasnt supported captivate since 2.1 eclair.
2.5 clockwork is nowhere near the latest. at version 5 now.
and when rom manager used to work, you boot into 3e recovery then select install update.zip TWICE. (every time)
THEN you will boot into CWM.

Hi,
You told a guy who was trying to get clockwordmod recovery on his captivate, to use this:
[KERNEL][KK4][1/28/11] Corn Kernel v7.06 from Source (OC, BLN, Voodoo Sound, etc.)
Should I also take that advice? I want to put AOKP on the phone, but I have to get clockwork on there first and the normal way doesn't work because of the 3e recovery unsigned business. Thank you much for your expertise and for being a great help to everybody.
