I have the official Dell car mount attached to my dashboard using the circular sticky pad.
In the summer it's stuck there like you wouldn't believe. In winter, I just can't get it to stick. The pad is still firm to the dash, but the suction mount will not stay attached for more than about 20 seconds.
Any suggestions short of some sort of permanent attachment?
I'm in NY.

Same issue here
Just wont stick when the glass is cold...
However once the glass gets warmed with heater on for sometime, it does...
I tired many many things but nothing seems to work
However i use a garmin gps mount and that sticks all the time...
My next step would to modify that mount to replace my streak mount
I don't know if they hold any better but Rocketfish and Bracketron both make a mount that has the same attachment point as the Dell car mount. I picked a Rocketfish mount for a spare at Best Buy for $10. The suction cup on the Rocketfish is clear and the Dell mount is black.
Just in case you didn't know the Dell mount has two positions for the grip lever. Make sure you are pushing it all the way down.
Rocketfish mount at Best Buy
Bracketron Mount - they have other models
Edit: Here are some custom car mounts.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll see if I can find any of those to try out.

does the same for me... damn thing pops off my Harley windshield either first thing in the AM or in the PM.
Best I could do clean the cup and glass very well and put the cup on it wet
I've read on gps forums that a drop of vegetable oil, vaseline, or chap stick might work. Worth a try.
I've got a good reaction time now though. I can take one hand off the wheel and catch it before it hits the centre console!

Hmm, Pre-order and the pictures are faked (charging lead plugging in the left hand side?). Best wait till after their September due date and check again, it looks like it will be a nice solution if it arrives.
I bought a universal car dock from ebay and whilst the phone fits (kind of) the streak is just so damn heavy it shakes about A LOT. It's usable, but very irritating.
Not sure what these 2 will be like though, but watch out for shaking
saving seller for future use.
Now they are on i am sure their will be more to follow ie China
ah, the chinese. good food, attractive women, cheaply made, cheaply priced inferior products we just cant resist. gotta love em
Yep that is all True and Yep We never Learn and we BUY BUY BUY dont we just love em
Considering the car docking kit from Dell is perfect, I don't see why anyone would consider a third party car station.

Sure... aside from the over-inflated price. I bought mine from a local Wireless Wave here in Toronto and it works just as well for $20 taxes in.
Dell car kit far from perfect
I bought the car kit from Dell, and no matter whether the device is hanging from the windshield or off the dash, the Streak bounces around like mad when I am driving. My car is nowhere NEAR that bad - it is a heavy device and an awkward mount.
I just ordered a GPS t-mount from ProClip that might work well. I will take the sleeve the Streak sits in on the gooseneck and mount that on the ProClip mount, then attach that to the vehicle mount made for my car. That should lock the device down.
It's an expensive solution, but I spend about an hour each way commuting daily, so it is really a necessity for me. My mount should be here on Wednesday, and if anyone is interested I will write it up and post a picture or two if it works.
pictures would be awesome.
Do you see anyway to have the adapter attached (jerry-rigged) to the mount so that it plugs in when you insert the Streak?
I am looking for a way, as plugging the cable in is extremely tempermental, and a pain, to be honest!!
I suppose you could do something on the bottom of the Dell sleeve to hold the cable. I will have my cable secured on the console and the mount, so it is no problem for me to plug it in the bottom of the phone when I put it in the stand.
The mount comes in tomorrow. Can't wait. Had to slam on the brakes on the way home today and it looked like my phone was on the business end of a trebuchet...

In the US it is only 39.99.... not too expensive if you ask me. Plus this car docking kit really is perfect for the Streak. The sides are flexible rubber that hold the Streak and on the back there are rubber pads so absolutely no plastic is touching the Streak resulting in no scratches. Plus you get a a cable with it.
Perfection is worth the 40 bucks. Although I would love to see images of the one you purchased and seem pleased with.
I have the Dell car kit and I like it. It seems reasonably priced at $40 since it comes with a cigar lighter-USB adapter and USB cable as separate items. One can never have too many charging cables or options. The mount does jiggle a bit however this can be cured by positioning the mount so the cradle rests on top of the dash rather than suspended in mid-air.

I'm looking to use the dell case inners for a car holder. I have some garmin mounts that will allow me to fix to the dash.
The issue with the ones from ebay (original post) the holding part is covering the power pdmi connector.

Anyone thinking of making their own car mount should make clearance for the camera lens so it can be used as a dash-cam. Dell did not do this and it would require some cutting on their kit.

I acutally brought one of these:
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/clingo-universal-in-car-holder-p25398.htm
The arm is solid but since it still sticks out a fair bit and the phone is kinda heavy, it does bounce a little (nothing compared to the flexi arms you find on most other phone holders). And since the Dell has a flat back, it sticks pretty well too (though I have had it drop once but I think that was cos my brother didn't put it on properly and due to the weight, it slowly peeled itself off). The pad only covers a small area of the back of the phone so you can use the camera, and there's also no clamps that would obscure the charging port or the buttons on top.
If the docking station was cheaper, I'd seriously consider getting another one for the car, that way I can easily put it on and take it off with super easy and I can leave the cable plugged in and just tuck it away (saves so much time when I do multiple deliveries and stuff).

I've seen the Dell car mount kit, and it seems to have a snugg fit to the dell.
my question is... can you use it with a case over the Dell, something like the form fit case from Dell.

How good is it really? does it pad really grip the device. I'ts an interesting concept, but does it hold onto the Dell through a long journey.

Can anyone suggest a not too expensive car mount that fits the tmo HD2? the windshield kind, not the vent kind.
NOt sure..but this is the best one!
http://www.proclipusa.com/home/home.aspx?afid=42&admkt=670ca577&gclid=CKTHtJipw6QCFUNM5Qod1Wf8iw
I found a perfect mount at compusa that is made for an iphone but works great on my HD2. can send part number if needed.

I use the Tetrax Xway. It requires a magnet on the back of the case. I initially thought it would be annoying but I positioned it in the very middle of the phone so the phone can spin on it. I can't tell you how much enjoyment being able to spin my phone has been. With a good twirl it can spin for 2 minutes 30 seconds. I really freaked people out when Inception was big as it seemed to never stop spinning like that totem.
But the actual mount attaches to the car's AC vent which is the perfect position. The center console just seems too far away. It can be just to the right of the steering wheel.
An additional benefit is with a neodymium magnet set I got from ThinkGeek I can mount the phone anywhere that's metal. I just take four of the little cylindrical magnets and form a square with them. The phone magnet fits quite well in the divet in the middle of them. I now have a phone mount on the hood of the oven to load recipes while I cook (or watch a movie). It's quite secure, and the magnet won't hurt the phone. Just keep anything with a hard drive away like an iPod.
An interesting possibility would be to buy a cheaper clip on cover from eBay (preferably black) then buy a cheap gps mount. Then glue the case onto the mount. Then you will have an adjustable $10-15 cheap car mount
i wonder if they would make one that fits hd2 that has an otterbox case on it
let me record out of the windshield... ie. let me record what i see when I drive...
I know, it's kind of a weird request, but is there one that will let me do this?
I highly doubt it, there is finally a company just now making a dock for the inc...but still not released yet. youre better off modifying an existing car mount to get that option or make something....can't be too difficult

if i remember correctly.. the holster on the htc car dock has the camera cutout so you should be able to use it. the holster mounts to the dock and lets you rotate it to landscape so that should let you see out
I have a mount like this from VZ.. It captures the mount in the scene, but could probably be modded.
Best Buy sells an adjustable universal window mount setup that works perfect. You can virtually adjust it any way to make it fit, and would work great for your application. Plus, the side grips have a nice foam type material that would soak up a lot of vibrations.

You could use a drill bit slightly larger than the camera whole. I actually have that verizon clip, and I think a mod would work quite well.

No no, it captures the suction cup in the view.. Not the phone cradle.
Check out the M25 Sound dock on amazon. I have one, the angle is adjustable, and it steers out the window.
UnRevoked HTC Incredible
You could always get one of those non-sliding, weighted suction cup mounts that go on your dash then use any mount and place it facing the windshield.
You could always try to eBay a cheap universal mount and cheap DInc case, then super glue them together for a cheap custom fit case
There's a car mount on eBay called the SlipGrip that has a ton of different mounting solutions and custom molded cradles for the DINC in various kinds of 3rd party cases (Otterbox, silicone, VZW case, naked). The suction cup mount has a nice long adjustable arm so you could mount it with the suction cup on your dash rather than the windshield and adjust the cradle so the arm isn't in the shot. The cradle also rotates 180 degrees so you can record vertical or horizontal.
I will sell you one for $50 that is really nice. The cradle is made for the phone and you can suction mount it to your window or glass nightstand table. I will post pics in the morning.
This might not be the right place, but I can't find an answer - is there a car dock that will fit the Seidio 3500 battery? I don't know if the large battery causes any problems with car docks, but I would assume it does...
i use one thats actually for a I*hone. It clips and leaves the camera unobstructed.
Has any one tried this mount with the nexus 7?
Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 (P3100) - Holder with Tilt Swivel
Item #: 511381
thanks
No, but I've emailed them. They said they are still waiting to receive their Nexus. Then they would probably have a 3-5 week period before they'd be available for order.
can we get a link PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEE
THANKS in advance
Here's a link to the one in question. I believe they also have one for the kindle fire. I'm sure one technically works based on size, but I'll wait for the actual Nexus one to be released.

Then you need the vehicle mount of your choice for your specific vehicle.
I have the iPad version of that mount and it's excellent albeit a bit pricey.
How do you mount it? Screw it on to the dash?
if you click the link above, you should see vehicle mounts.
They make different mounts for each car. Typically without the use of even double sided tape. Definitely no screwing to the dash.
The device mount, bolts to the vehicle mount. The vehicle mount is attached to your specific vehicle. Nothing permanent.
For my car for example, there are two mounts that use no tools at all, and one that uses double sided tape.
I bought a ProClip mount for my phone (Galaxy S II) and was unimpressed to find that it lightly clipped into the dash of my car, but was mostly held on with adhesive tape. On hot days, the tape basically melts and the mount stays lightly clipped in, but sags and moves around. Not the "perfect sturdy mounting solution" that was advertised.
I emailed support and their answer to me (paraphrased) was "well we've sold a hundred of these without issue, so we can't do anything for you".
Oh great, I feel like a moron for spending $85 on a phone mount. So, word of warning, depending on what car you drive and what type of mount you order, it might sag under the weight of the Nexus 7.

I love their holders (made by Brodit) but the dash adapters are weak.
I use a dash adapter from panavise. It is made of steel. The bolt patterns match those used by Proclip/Brodit. Works great.
I wish Brodit/Proclip would support the pogo pins and what-not.
I might try this out here soon, been wanting to do a full in dash install or radio replacement for the Nexus 7 but can't find anything for that.
I was looking at this, and seems like a better solution than leaving my tablet on my passenger seat while i play music over bluetooth.

I personally think the arms are too flimsy and easily breakable. The next best non-windshield one is by Exomount but that's a whopping $50 and it's bulky. I'm waiting for a decent CD slot mount from Mountek (heard they were gonna make one).

I've had cd mounts. To me, they aren't the most reliable thing to put your coveted N7 on lol...but the ones that are coming out I have yet to see.
The arkon can be a dash-w/ help from a dash disk or windshield mount. So it's the best of both worlds IMO. I interchange my Arkon phone mount and now the tablet mount when I want to switch on the torque app
Yeah I was thinking of doing that with the Arkon but wouldn't the sun eventually kill the adhesive on the dash disc?
I had this Arkon floor mount put in my truck for my old Galaxy Tab:
http://www.arkon.com/tablet-accessories/universal-tablet-car-mount.html
It was pretty easy to install; it's a bit more permanent than a dash or window mount, but it can be taken out in just a few minutes. It also comfortably holds my iPod or N7 and it keeps it out of the way but still easily viewable/accessible.

I live in Texas. The adhesive sticks great big time. You'll have issues of the plastic warping first before the adhesive gives out, if it does.
