[Q] Can't 'install zip from sd card' Help! - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I've got a Samsung Galaxy S I9000, but I don't have the stock Live Wallpapers.
Now I wanna install/do this:
"First place SamsungLWP.zip on the root of your SDcard (plug your phone into your computer and transfer the samsungLWP.zip to your phone's sdcard)
1. Go into rom manager and reboot into recovery
2. scroll down to install zip from sd card and press the power button
3. scroll down choose zip from SD card again hit power button
4. highlight signed SamsungLWPs.zip
5. Hit power button
6. Go back until you get to the reboot option I think back twice Reboot phone
7. go to personalize in setting options select htc wallpapers select live wallpapers and pick one to enjoy one"
I can't do the 2nd step, because there is no choice to select 'install zip from sd card'.
Can anybody help me?
I've got the stock rom (Froyo) and the phone is rooted.
Help would be appreciated
Koen

nobody?, I really need this now

did you fetch cwm?
The instructions assume you have CWM recovery (or a similar tool) on your phone.
In order to install programs in this manner you have to get CWM recovery. (search for rom manager in market and flash cwm (it's the first option from the top),
then again, I'm assuming you're getting this since you're still on 3e (the recovery most galaxy s phones come with). What I'd like you to do is get your phone into recovery mode and tell me what the very first line on the top says.

Hi,
The first line says: 'Android system recovery <3e>'

theres your problem you need recovery 2e
search for CWM in either update.zip or Flashable Odin version like cf-root.
if you get the update.zip version you need to put it on the root of your internal sd card, boot into recovery and select apply:update.zip you will need to do this twice... then CWM will appear and let you flash unsigned zip files.
if you use odin version just flash it in download mode and when you next boot you will have 2e recovery.

I just fixed it, I did put the 'data/app' folder onto my phone, and installed it, and it worked.
Thx everyone

There's your problem
You currently do not have the option to install (most) zip files from recovery. If you do want this option it is very possible and not too complicated(although this might void warranty) please read the forum guide on how to get CWM (clockworkmod)

I'm having a similar problem, but azzledazzle's suggestion left me a little baffled. I've got rom manager installed, Clockworkmod flashed and all that good stuff, but I'm still not able to install new roms. Now, I'm just about to try recovery mode, and...
Yes, 3e.
But how do I find a 2e thingie? Imagine I'm a gigantic moron who can put things in folders, but that's about it. I apologise for the pathetic help request, but if there's anyone...

Any help guys?thanks

Also having problems installing from sd
* edit*

Listen..I have a HTC One V and when I go in recovery mode it says E:Can't open...Then when i press Vol Up + Power Button a list of commands pops up but there is nothing saying install zip from SD card..And now it's stuck at the htc one screen i can't start it up \_/

can it work for i9300 ?

A: Here is a couple of reasons:
- A huge preformance boost
- Multi-Touch web browsing
- Install Apps directly to your SD Card
- Wireless and Wired Internet Tethering
- Faster Download Speeds
- Bonus Apps and Widgets from other builds
- Many many many more

2. Press on "About Phone"
3. Scroll Down to "Firmware Version" if you have 1.5 please skip to the Rooting Your Phone part of this Guide. If you have 1.6 or higher please follow the downgrading part of the Guide.

ADB and FASTBOOT
Q. What is ADB?
A. ADB is a source tool for developers and avid android modders such as yourself to access the commands prompt of your phone through your PC. This allows full access to your phone through your computer which makes moving, installing, removing, and replacing files on your phone MUCH faster
Q. What is fastboot?
A. Similar to ADB, this allows you in flash a while img to any partition in your phone, including recovery, system, and user-data.

Difference between a Boot-Loop, Semi-Brick, and a full Brick
Boot-Loop
Q. What is a Boot-Loop?
A. A boot loop is when your phone is stuck on the "ANDROID" screen when u first boot your phone (after the G1 screen or the My Touch screen). This occurs when something you have flashed went bad or interfeared with something you already had installed.
Solution:
1. Turn off your phone
2. Enter Recovery (Hold HOME while holding the POWEr button)
3. Choose from the following:
- Install a rom you KNOW works. Such as the latest cyanogenROM or the rom you have been preivously using
or
- Make a full wipe of your SD Card an phone and flash your update again
Semi-Brick
Q. What is a Semi-Brick?
A. A Semi-Brick is when your phone wont boot at all. The only thing is, you still have access to the recovery and/or fastboot menu
Solution:
Brick
Q. What is a Brick?
A. A Brick is when your phone wont boot at all. This time, you DO NOT have access to the recovery AND fastboot menu. Basically, your phone is a paper weight.
Solution:
You can try this fix here which requires a Donor G1 to work:

......Android opens .apks, you would need androzip to extract a zip file. Linda will only open .apks to install..
Nicely done, as usual.
Would this guide be the same if I was using Super D as the rom?

No need to panic. As long as you can access the Blue Android Logo, you are fine.
Please list, step by step, what you did (including ROM Version Numbers).
Also - you might want to try flashing/wiping your phone. That seems to take care of many issues, but I'd still like to see what you did.

[FIXED] [Q] help! Trying to upgrade android 2.1 to 2.2 on Optus SGS

Hi all,
I'm a beginner to this stuff, so please bear with me. I've gotten an SGS from Optus here in Australia, with Android 2.1. I want to upgrade to 2.2, so here I am on these forums
I confirmed that there was no 3-button combo mode on this SGS, and have successfully installed the fix as detailed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=785201 (a much more painful process than I thought, having to get a hold of a Windows computer (wasn't comfortable using Windows in a VM to flash my phone, couldn't figure out how to get the 3-button on my SGS with Hiemdall), get the USB drivers from the Android SDK, install Java, stab self with spoon, etc)
Now I've gotten the 3-button combo on the phone, I have read through the FAQ thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=723596) and the thread on the newest ROM(?) Doc BUJP8 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=817703).
Bearing in mind that I have never done this before, what the heck do I do next? I tried putting the BUJP8 file (BUJP8_Doc_V9.zip, renamed to update.zip) on the phone storage in a folder titled 'sdcard', rebooted with ADB and got told that the phone couldn't extract the update.zip file. Is that correct? Do I need any other files to update my phone from 2.1 to 2.2?
Edit: The phone tells me "E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (No such file or directory) Installation aborted."
I'm rather frustrated and grumpy I know that I'm missing something, so if you can please let me know what to do next, that would be excellent!
From the threads installation instructions. This rom works fine on Optus (I'm using it as well) with Dark Theme.
BTW, don't rename the Doc ROM to update.zip. You need to use the clockwork file as update.zip (see below)
Good luck
Installation Steps (Read this very carefully!)
01. Download the ROM (which you seem to already have downloaded) and put it on your internal sdcard.
02. Download clockworkmod recovery from here: http://koush.tandtgaming.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-2.5.1.2-galaxys.zip
You *need* Clockworkmod, this won’t work with stock recovery.
03. Rename the clockworkmod recovery file to “update.zip” and put it on your internal sdcard.
*SKIP THIS STEP AS YOU'RE COMING FROM AN OFFICIAL OPTUS ROM WITH NO TWEAKS*
04. If you had Voodoo installed prior to installing this ROM (Eclair or Froyo), make sure you still have the "disable lagfix" folder inside "/sdcard/Voodoo". If you’re coming from sztupy’s kernel, make sure you have disabled all Lagfixes from CWM.
05. Shutdown phone, wait for it to power down, then boot the phone into recovery mode (press volume up, keep it pressed, then press home button, keep it pressed, then press power button, keep it pressed until you see the Galaxy S screen. Release all three buttons when you see it).
06. Select “apply sdcard:update.zip” (use volume rocker to move up and down, and home button to select). Clockworkmod recovery will boot now (you may have to do apply update.zip twice for Clockworkmod to show up).
07. Once in Clockworkmod, select “install zip from sdcard” (use volume rocker to move up and down and the back button to select).
08. Select “choose zip from sdcard” and then select the ROM zip package. Then choose yes.
09. The update will start (will take some 5 minutes) and during the flashing you will see some strange big characters on the screen, don’t worry, that’s normal. After the process finishes, you will be dropped back into Clockworkmod recovery. From there, choose go back, and then reboot phone.
10. The first boot will take some time as the ROM will deodex
11. After the phone boots up, shutdown phone again, and then boot into recovery. The phone will boot DIRECTLY into Clockworkmod. From there, select "advanced ULK features", then "Lagfix options". You can select any of the lagfix schemes (description here). I recommend NO-RFS advanced EXT4 (others are known to have issues and may cause loss of data)
Click to collapse
Woot! All working now The trick I hadn't worked out from all the instructions was to put the update.zip file in the root of the phone storage as seen by Windows, as it wasn't clear if I should have created a folder called 'sdcard' and putting update.zip there or not.
So once I worked out that putting update.zip in the root of the phone storage was the correct thing to do, I could finally get the recovery mode and have the phone successfully see 'update.zip'!
The phone has booted, and I've shut it down and gone back to clockwork, but there isn't a 'NO-RFS advanced EXT4' option for lagfix - the closest is 'NO-RFS advanced (a=e4)' - is this the EXT4 option, just badly rendered?

Good to hear you got it sorted.
And yes. That's the right EXT4 option

[Q] Not booting into CWM?

My captivate won't boot into CWM recovery, even when directed by the Rom Manager app.
Completely stock rom, rooted. I've already flashed the latest version via the app.
Check your internal sd card for an update.zip file. If it's not there, I believe it's in the clockworkmod folder, named 'recovery-update.zip'. Copy and paste it to the root of your sd card and rename it update.zip. You should be good to go.

Yes, reboot into recovery. Use the volume rocker to scroll to 're-install packages' and press the power button to select it. It will probably reboot you right back to the same screen again, with the blue and yellow letters, if it does, re-install packages again and that should boot you right into clockwork recovery. All the text in clockwork is green, so you'll know when it's a success.

It will probably reboot you right back to the same screen again, with the blue and yellow letters, if it does, re-install packages again and that should boot you right into clockwork recovery. All the text in clockwork is green, so you'll know when it's a success.

OK, I get to that, do a phone reboot, tell it to reboot into CWM and it still reverts back to the samsung recovery screen??

So have you seen the actual CWM recovery screen? Black background and green words? If you're still seeing the samsung recovery with the blue and yellow words, re-install packages again.
And double check to make sure that the update.zip is in the root/main part of the internal sd card.

Yes, I had made sure that the update.zip was in the right place, I did see the black background and green words, and I've flashed the update multiple times (have also tried redownloading, renaming again and reflashing). No dice.
Oh, ok, well that completes the process of booting into CWM. Now what do you need to use CWM for?
If you're flashing ROM's:
find a ROM that you want
download it
place it on your sd card
scroll down and select 'install zip from sd card'
then scroll and select 'choose zip from sd card'
then find the rom and select
then confirm your action by scrolling and selecting the rom again.

Well, I would select a rom to flash, but it would reboot into the samsung recovery screen; I can get to CWM by flashing the update again, and then flashing the zip from there, but I assume that's not the correct way to do it?
Yes, actually that is the correct way to do it. Sometimes you have to flash the update twice in order for samsung recovery to take you into CWM.
Just get into CWM and flash from there.

Installing CWM on Captivate 2.1-update

Trying to get CWM installed (to eventually get CM7 installed) on my friend's Captivate running stock 2.1-update1 to no avail. We have it rooted, we have ROM manager installed, but no matter what I do when it comes to flashing a recovery, it does not work. When I go to flash the update.zip, it says file is not found because it doesn't seem to be downloading anything at all. Any help?
EDIT: I think I got it, might have just been selecting the wrong option.....
If it doesn't work then try this. This will work. Btw rom manager does not play nice with captivates. I would not suggest it.
Download this: http://www.mediafire.com/?ve234hbg64ctcu0
Then follow these instructions.
step 4: Install clockwork recovery.
1. Go to the download folder and rename clockworkrecovery.zip to update.zip. Mount your phone and drag the update.zip file into the root directory. It is ok to overwrite the update.zip you used before. When it is done copying turn off your phone.
2. Unplug your phone and hold down both volume buttons and the power button until a strange menu with blue items pops up. This is called the recovery menu.
3. Scroll using the volume buttons to the menu item titled "reinstall packages" and press the power button to select. (you may have to do this twice to get it to work)
4. Your phone should restart and you should be at a green menu.

yeah we got it to work but thank you so very much for your instructions. My friend is basically amazed at the speed and flexibility of CM7 over that Eclair bloated it piece of garbage the stock rom is.
Wow... This Worked in July 2013
I pulled an old Captivate from the drawer that has Android 2.1-update (Eclair) on it and could not for the life of me recall how to get CWM Recovery so I can start installing some later ROMS.
The method you provided worked. Downloaded that file, put it into the phone's internal memory, root directory, changed name to update.zip, got into Samsung recovery, and on the SECOND try it installed CWM recovery.
Thanks.
I have cwm 6.0.3.6 installed. CWM website says 2.0.5.2 (or something close to that) is only available recovery.
How did I end up with 6.0.3.6? And should I flash 2.x.x.x?
Running 10.2 nightly.

You don't need to flash anything.

[Q] Bricked Phone? Can't Load Recovery

This is my bro's old phone, and he said it's rooted and it has CWM installed.
1. I wanted to install a new rom so I put the zip file in an SD card.
2. There's a Recovery mode option when you want to restart the phone
3. I wiped the cache and data/partition.
4. I tried searching for the zip file, but I couldn't find it.
5. So I turned off the phone and relocated the zip file to the root of the sd drive.
Now! I'm trying to load into recovery, but I can't.
Is it bricked????
I plugged it on the pc and it made a sound that detected the device.
Btw, I'm a total amateur at programming/rooting, so all the help in the simplest form would be very appreciated.
Please help, the phone is still good and I don't want it to go to waste. I wanna start using it! Any help is appreciated (including reference links to other posts/threads)
to come into recovery mode, pull your battery out and then in again. then hold volume up, home button and power on all together....hold them all 3 till Samsung S logo is gone or till Kernel logo appears, the you can led the power button free but hold the other 2 till you will be in recovery mode again.
In CWM do not search or tick for the update zip. Go over: install zip from internal sd card and then phone should show you the files which are included there. Hopefully device will show you the rom.zip you want to flash there too.
If not, then i recommend to search here in the forum, and take you some to read and inform you about next steps....here are some links for first and further informations:
