[Q] Good battery life saver for streak 7 - Dell Streak 7

Dear all,
I love my Streak 7 so far except for the disappointing battery life.
But I think if I can find a good battery life saver apps then keeping this device is sure for me coz I love all other aspect of it.
I tried JuiceDefender which caused unstablility from time to time (FC, freeze phone, never wake up , not able to turn up data connection etc)
Anyone would recommend some other battery saver similar to JuiceDefender please?
Appreaciate any of your inputs!

Superpower?
http://www.appbrain.com/app/superpower-xda-beta-v0-75/nl.morose.superpower
Don't know if that will work. it's what I use on my phone though

Thanks
After a couple of days testing different optimizers, (you know, you need to have at least a day to see if it really works for most of its functions),
JuiceDefender is generally out for current Streak 7, maybe their future updated app will work better.
It costed me
1. unstable OS (blackscreen, never wakeup, not able to switch from airplane mode to normal radio)
2. Causing data connection much slower to switch. Symptom: when I unlock the screen, after seeing the 4G sign appearing at upper right corner, if I go to market to select an app and click install, it will take very long time before you see it starts downloading.
So far SuperPower Beta looks much better working on this phone. But the CPU function is not working with Tegra Dual Core.
And it does not have the option to switch to airplane mode completely, so the effectiveness of saving juice is affected.
But that's fine with me.
2 hours light use costed 4% of battery. I am happy with it.

I use automatic task killer. Straightforward. Kills tasks when screen shut. Easy to use. Supersonic, Glacier and now Streak 7 consistently stable.

My vote for
1>automatic task killer ( or Android task killer #a2sd lowmem-aggressive )
2>+ Autostarts to remove not used services that will pop up again even with task killer
3> + Airplane mode
4>+ kill auto -sinc
5>+ location by wireless ; uncheck gps
Then if you turn tablet OFF you will enjoy long battery

Hey does Power Manager Pro work for the steak 7? I know I use it for my G1 and love it. Just wondering if it works for the tablet too.

There is the Good battery life saver for streak 7 on E-BAY
"AA Battery External Backup Charger for DELL Streak 5 7 " and you run time better that IPAD

That item looks nice, but uses AA batteries, so question is, how much EXTRA charge does it give you?

I'm using an IMP 1000 from New Trent... it increases the life of my Streak 7 by about 2.5 times....

Got a link for us?

http://www.amazon.com/IMP1000-Extre...Z64Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1299083092&sr=8-1

Thats something to think about. Good find thanks for sharing

That looks VERY nice since it works more then just AA batteries for the DS7, this one can power more then one device. 80$ is high, but might be nice to have.

This one is actually cheaper and has a higher mAh. edit: wait is the trent 1000Mah or 10000?
http://www.amazon.com/Just-Mobile-4400mAh-External-Portable/dp/B001BWQTOC
I saw this girl in class tonight have one of these power things and it had a built in blade ac plug so you can just directly plug the power pack into the wall. The ones I have seen you need a AC adapter to plug into the power pack. I'm on the hunt to find one that does have the fold in ac prongs..

I would say the 1st trent one is 10000, reason is,
http://www.amazon.com/New-Trent-ultra-pack-IMP880-Blackberry/dp/B002YFDRHW/ref=pd_sim_e_4
is a 70$ 8900mAh

I have the IMP1000 too, but when I set the brightness to full the imp can't charge anymore and battery keeps dropping to 0

Sounds like the DS7 really has a huge drain on "x" areas.. We really should map a graph of battery useage to "x" settings. If Im not mistaken, wasnt there somewhere that showed the battery drain.

Wow. 11,000 mAh external battery. That looks awesome.

Take look on Griffin USB Reserve Power Battery - $8.50 + FS
http://www.fatwallet.com/best-deals/griffin-usb-reserve-power-battery/
Even it only 950 mAh should be good as backup for 1h or so
Cannot go wrong just for $8.50 VS 70$ trent one

Battery life is what made me get the Galaxy Tab over the streak 7. Bigger battery and very good battery life = win! Also doing 3g test Galaxy tab out scored the streak 7 4G everytime which i found as odd.

Try a stable system image rather than.... sparmod? whatever that is...
even i am facing the same issue. the battery is causing a major concern for me. need to keep it plugged in through out the day.
can anyone suggest what can be done?
What would u prefer?
It depends on a few things, included background processes that load the cpu, whether the antenna is trying to gain a 3g signal when its far from one, gps, and battery health. Use 2g networks and turn off gps. That should at least double your battery life. You can also underclock the cpu with a profile in setcpu. Lower brightness as well. Otherwise, get a new battery. After a while, a battery loses charge and will need to be replaced.

Same thing happen when i used to have my G1. Overnight charge and in literally 30-60 minutes it would die.. Do you leave wifi, Bluetooth, Use wireless networks, etc on?
This happened to me when i got mine. Now I can manage to run it for at mot 16 hours (Yes! 16!) The way is get a good ROM. I use SuperBad 2.1 And use the power controls widget. I use Extended Controls. I have everything off when not using. You gotta learn to manage your phone. And the active widgets too.
I do manage my phone GPS wifi there always off brightness is the lowest possible no updates from email no background data or anything

It could be one bad apk. Check settings/applications/running processes!
Mines was Application protection.
Another thing could be to check the physical condition of your battery. Mine's currently looking like () I'm waiting to hear a fizz pop *smoke* then a small fire. Hopefully it's not in my pocket when it happens. I've already ordered a new battery, hopefully it arrives in time.

3 thinks you can do
1)check for a better rom and\or verify if your gps, wi fi and on while this happens
2)Recalibrate your battery
2A Discharge it until it shuts itself off.
2B) Recharge it back to full and then leave it charging for another few hours even after it says it is full
2C)repeat if needed
3)buy a new one...
Okay im going to check out that 2.1 rom and ill check the battery if that doesnt help ill buy a new one

2600Mah ext batt+AMERICANANDROID TEST

This a combined test of an unofficial extended battery and a gingerbread rom for the HD2
The battery:
Unofficial 2600Mah(not confirmed) extended battery
The Rom:
AmeriCanAndroid AOSP HD2
GB233 CM7030111 booted from SD
the circumstances:
fully charged battery
NO cable plugged in the whole time, phone was on all time
Loud ringtones, vibrate on
launcher pro
beautiful widgets on home screen
mobile data globally off (don't have a data plan), deleted apn
wifi on/off manually, only when I needed it. It was on for:3h09m29s
autosync off, wifi enabled autosync
talktime: about 30 calls, some were very short 10-15sec, some longer 5-10min all togeher 46m20s +10text message
Screen brightness on auto, Screen filter on 48% when in low light conditions
Screen was on for 2h36m08s
Signal Reception 0-4 bars depending on location, most of the time around 3 bars
Used apps:
Soundhound, Maps/streetview, Earth, Facebook, Market, app installs, Nfs Shift(5min), DolphinHD, Astro, Poweramp couple of minutes each per day
GPS was off the whole time, didn't need it.
I used the phone moderatly, not excessively. Only turned the screen on when I needed it to be on. Obviously I wanted the battery to last long, but used my phone when I needed to.
Drain readings seem to be fine, got stuck on 15% and 1% for a while, you can see it in the diagram.
See currentwidget log as well
WELL:
2DAYS18HOURS14MINUTES51SECONDS
This should be more than enough.
PLEASE NOTE, that short times of Screen/Wifi uses don't appear under the diagram

More than 24 hours on moderate use. About 12 hours on excessive use. Might test that as well soon. It is a great idea to have two of those and swap them when needed. But I only managed to get these times with the rom above.

The diagram thing is a built in gingerbread feature I guess. Settings-About phone-battery use and tap the diagram on top
I used currentwidget to see drain in Mah.
I am testing the OEM original battery with the same rom, will post the results soon.
Wow two days thats impressive. I have a different rom. I might consider getting an extended battery now I can barely squeeze a few hours out of my phone.
hey frkm where didi u buy it?.plz give link fir that
You had to remove the battery to spend 100% of energy?
Edit: Sorry, had no read this:
NO cable plugged in the whole time, phone was on all time
Where did you get the battery? I checked ebay and only found the 2400mah version now.
Also any more updates about it?
have you test the battery with windows phone 7? it works?
i use 2600 ma too, n using hyperdroid n tytung kernel v8 or higher...
i think tytung the most compatible with 2600 ma batt
I bought the 2400mah battery, but it turned out it was marked 2600mah.
It lasts for a full day before it powers down, then it shows up as 44% battery if I take it out and put it back in. In process of testing it now. It's normal use with over 12hrs of poor reception and a few hours of wifi.
I'll probably boot into SD Android and retry this test.

[Q] Nook battery dies fast

I only have 5 widgets, and my brightness is also low as possible. I have wifi off when i don't use it, but my battery still dies kinda fast. Should i delete cell standby? And what else can i do?
You really should define "kinda fast" so folks can answer objectively

What drain are you seeing with screen off/idle?
with the screen off for about 5 hours i saw a 21% drain.
Drop the widgets and livewallpaper if you've got it. Retest standby.
If you're getting high battery drain during standby your nook isn't going into deep sleep and chances are that background overhead translates to poor efficiency at idle when the nook is on as well. Couple poor idle efficiency with CPU intensive work while in use and your overall battery life is terrible.
If you're forcing the nook to stay out of deep sleep for other reasons like keeping wifi alive then you may be stuck with living with some sort of elevated drain but you can minimize it by reducing idle overhead by keeping widgets to a minimum and refraining from using live wallpapers and other background services that aren't critical.
Tacking on to here rather than starting a new thread...
My Nook Color rooted, but still on stock ROM goes from 100% charge to 25% in about 8-9 hours with zero usage. Obviously something's going on (I suspect it's that I have Advanced WiFi sleep policy set to never and am away from WiFi), but no other widgets running. I do have Google Voice app installed.
What I'm curious about is what would normal standby battery drain be? What would be typical after 8-9 hours of just sitting untouched in my brief case?
Thanks in advance!

I believe typically overnight you should see less than 10% drain.
In CM7 at least, in Spare Parts you can see what uses the battery while the NC is asleep.

No, not yet. It's 100% stock, other than rooting and downloading apps. I'm going to put SystemPanel on it and see if it gives a clue.
I've got a good idea of how to track down battery issues on most android devices, I was just mostly curious what the typical drain other rooted users saw was.
Thx for the suggestions to all.

Good lord, this isn't going to help anything. Normal Nook Colors on the stock ROM (and kernel....) use about .2%/hr in standby.
Clearly something is running wild on this guys NC, and needs to look at Spare Parts. Install it from the market.
System Panel as well as other tools can help as well.
Okay, I'm a pretty smart guy usually, but I'll publicly put on the dunce cap and admit to my ignorance on this one.
System Panel actually showed some amazingly good lack of drain with all my apps running.
The reason my battery was so low when I checked it each afternoon is because even though I thought I was charging the thing over night, I wasn't. I was using a regular micro-usb cable for my phone to plug the thing in most nights.
Turns out the Nook Color has an extra deep micro-usb receptacle and requires a better endowed male plug to get it charged properly.
Lame...
(Lame of me, but also lame of B&N to make such a design decision. What were they thinking? I HATE proprietary connectors.)

Extra WIDE, not deep. And there's good reason USB standards are .5A over the typical 4 pin connection. The B&N cable has FOUR extra pins, delivering the other 1.4A of power.
Extra deep. Two stages...

Thanks for the extra info about the additional voltage; so it will charge much faster this way? (rhetorical question)
I still am annoyed at yet another non-standard cable that I'll have to carry around with me when I travel to keep various devices charged, but in the scheme of things it's a minor annoyance. Stuff like this should be standardized, IMHO.
And it's extra DEEP, not wide. It's the same width as a standard micro-usb cable or I wouldn't have been able to stick my phone's charging cable into it at all, but I was able to, it just didn't go in deep enough to charge at all. On the flips side, the B&N cable fits into my phone, but only inserts half-way deep; if it were extra wide it wouldn't fit into my phone at all.

Why is battery life so horrible?!

I just bought a new Captivate (first android device) which I upgrade to from a Nokia E63. I've been playing around adjusting settings etc. and I noticed that my battery is more than 20% drained already! Is there something wrong with my model? If not, what can I do to save my battery for when I really need it?
If all you're doing is playing with it yes its gonna go down. Also depends on what programs is any you have running in the back ground. Furthermore if your wifi Bluetooth and GPS are all on there's another drainer. Last make sure you have the latest update. Usually the out of the box captivates don't have the 2.2 so use the kies program that's on the disk that came with it.
Sent from the dark forest on the way to Grandmas house from my captivate.
If the battery is new its going to drain quickly at the beginning, after a couple of recharges its going to get better. Other than that i would set the display brightness to auto and i'd download green power free from the market to toggle wifi/data and have it turn on for 1 minute every 15 minutes to save the battery.
i never understand why people complain about battery life cause i can go more than a day without charging, but here are some tricks. turn off wifi, and blue tooth. also under volt your cpu to save more power. also get a dark background because amold screens use no power when displaying black.
It is all in the way You use it.When you are surfing the net and just all around using the crap out of the phone battery life will be horrible. once the new smartphone phase wears out that battery life will come back up. On moderate use I get a day or better. on heavy use I get 4 to 7 hours maybe.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Big difference regarding the display technology between the two phones. It's the price you pay for the AMOLED.
Don't use auto brightness and keep the setting to its lowest if at all possible. An app called Screen Filter is helpful during night time reading.
Just make sure you let your battery drain until your phone shuts off and give it a full charge. You should be good from there.
Battery Dr is a good apparently. Just fyi

Getting the most out of your battery

Ok going to try and start a conversation here to get feedback from everyone on what you guys do to get the most out of your battery. I see alot of people always asking what kernal is best for battery life and some people seem to have horrible battery life and some have exceptional battery life. I personally get decent battery life. Nothing super amazing but that comes down to the way I use my phone.
My current battery I'm using - Andida 2000mah battery
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/280843217453...X:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_4497wt_1396
I also have - GTMax 3500mah battery
http://www.amazon.ca/GTMax-Extended-Battery-3500mAh-Microfiber/dp/B006VAP102/ref=pd_rhf_se_p_t_4
The Andida gives me generally a extra 2-3 hours more over the stock. I had to cycle the battery 4 times before I started seeing any real improvements. If I take these off the charger at 6:30am I can ussually make it to around 10pm without needing to charge.
The GTMax get me through a day (630am - midnight) with around 50% left.
Now keep in mind this is based on my usage habits, and when I'm at work my signal is horrible so it drains a bit harder for the 8 hours I'm at work.
I don't have LTE where I live or work, I do get LTE in areas close by but on a regular day I don't see it. With the bad signal at work I've started to switch to gsm only mode (phone was constantly switching from Edge to 3g/4g and wouldn't provide a stable connection most of the time). This seems to have helped my battery at work.
When I flash a new rom I always give it at least 2 good full battery cycles before judging the battery life on it.
Ok onto some apps. My first foray into getting better battery life started with wanting to control my data. I used Juice Defender to that but I found that having to wait for the data to turn back on was at some times taking way to long and even sometimes I would have to reboot to get it back. Tried a few others and had similar experiences. When it works its nice and I did see some gain from it but at the same time it seemed bloated and slow and I decided I like having my data on and readily available quickly. After some searching I found an awesome app...

I highly recommend reading up on this app and trying it out. If your seeing a big drain on you battery while the screen is off, it's probably because there is something that is keeping it from going into a deep sleep mode. This won't save you any battery just by installing it but with a little work it can make a pretty good difference.
Ok now this is where I'm looking for suggestions, are there apps that you find specifically run smoother or are lighter than their stock counterparts or rival apps that put less of a strain on the battery?
Instead of the stock messaging app I run Pansi SMS. It gives me a few extra options but I never really used the stock mms on ICS so I can only compare it to Handcent SMS and I think it is definitely lighter and a lil bit more battery friendly. It's not a huge difference but I try and squeeze everything I can w/o giving up functionality.
For a launcher I'm running apex right now, but for a lightweight launcher I'd recommend FTL. Runs really nice and smooth, nothing fancy about it, just fast and light.
Some apps sometimes can just be poorly coded and thus have a bad effect on battery life. Alot of people seem to feel the Facebook app is one such app that suffers from that. The app that gets the most recommendations as a replacement and being a bit easier on the battery is Friendcaster. I tend to agree with that, and would recommend trying it out.
I'd really like to hear about what everyone else does to try and squeeze out the most of their battery. Theres more stuff that I do, such as reducing the amount of things that are synced to only the stuff I actually want, default settings just sync everything and I don't feel I need to sync my contacts on a daily basis as I rarely change them around. So share your tips, experiences good and bad with apps in regards to your battery, and if theres enough feedback I'll try and re-organize this into a bit better structure.

Right here, this is the key. I have data off all the time. I only turn it on when I need to look something up or browse. IMO auto updates really kill the battery and aren't worth leaving your data on all the time. I'm on wifi a lot as well. Currently I'm on DarkRaider and I'm ending the day with around 30-40%, great improvement over stock.
It seems that with every new handset that comes out this is one of the hottest topics but the parameters all always the same with regard to battery life.
The 3 biggest things that drain our batteries are Display Usage, Data Connection & Radio Cell Connection. These are listed in order of current used. Of the 3 we can have some control over the 1st 2. Lower screen brightness and disconnect data when not needed and use wifi when possible. While wifi does use a good amount of current it's not as much as mobile data. The last one, Radio Cell Connection, we have very little control over. It's also the reason we see people having great differences in battery life. The further the phone is from the tower it's connected to the more juice it needs to make a good connection. So other than leaving the phone in airplane mode or planning your life around where towers are, neither of which are very practical, there is not much we can do there.
To get the best all around life from Li-ion batteries do not fully discharge them very often and also don't keep them plugged in after they're fully charged. It's best to recharge them when they get down to 20-30% and unplug them after they're charged. They also don't need to be fully charged every time, they have no memory. If your on the go and can only leave it plugged in for a short period of time that's fine. Also if you have more than one battery and your not going to use the 2nd one for a while don't store it at full charge. drop it down to 50-60% before pulling it out.
I'll update this post when I get home tonight with more info and links. Hope it helps.

I always make sure my auto updates are off. WiFi isn't an option for me when I'm working. How do you manage your data connection? Do you manually turn it on and off or use an app? I never really tried manually turning the mobile data on/off, just found with apps like JD that it sometimes took way too long to establish a connection. I always shut off my wifi when I leave for work. I know with ICS the widget toggles for gps don't work, they take you to the settings to turn it off, is there one for mobile data?

With my 3500mah battery I don't really worry about turning anything off. That thing is great. Made a bumper case for it but I miss having a real case on it so I picked up the 2000mah andida battery so I could get a few more hours on some days. If someone ever made a real case for those big batteries i'd use it all the time.

Try 2x Battery from the store. It will shut off data as soon as the the phone sleeps, it reconnects at screen on after unlock almost instantly. It also allows you to white list apps, like Pandora. The free version only allows 1 app though.

The DarkRaider ROM I am using has a nice extended settings menu in the notification bar with a data toggle. I also have a nice widget from switchpro widgets where I can customize what kinds of things I want to be able to toggle from my homescreen. Currently I have data/wifi/vibrate-silent/gps. Doesn't take long at all when I toggle the data on/off, it's pretty much instant.

I use the 2X Battery app. When the phone goes to sleep, the app turns off the data radio. I can still get calls and text messages. I don't have a need for push notification of e-mail, etc., so this saves me some battery usage. Of course, if e-mail and other app notifications are important, this app will help only if you are willing to wait until you wake up the phone.
Here's what I do. I'm on the stock HTC battery.
I SetCPU screen off to 192/192 ondemand, in call to 810/192 ondemand, and regular use to 810/192 ondemand.
I listen to about 2 hours of music a day, have 3 GMail accounts on autosync, a Facebook account on hourly autosync and HTC Weather on hourly sync. Automatic brightness. Roughly 1.5 hours of cumulative web-browsing, no apps/games used.
I never use WiFi and I don't live in an LTE area.
I typically end the day (19-21 hours unplugged) with ~40% remaining.
Now I am not sure if living in area with LTE is a bless or curse....
I would unplug around 7am everyday, and by the time I get home (around 6pm) I would always in red mode (meaning, it is either 14% or under). Using the Holics-0.6 with the kernel that came with it, battery seems to die fast. Even when I am on the stock ICS before this, seems LTE would just bleed this baby to death....
Reading other comments, might as well start looking for a bigger battery....
It actually seems like I'm getting better battery since LTE came to my town. I'm on dark raider using kozmick's rc1 kernel and it's even better now. Try turning off vibration feedback...I think it's located in the sounds menu in settings. You can also try using automatic brightness or even just setting it to stay at 50% or lower. The screen is a battery hog. There's a stickied thread somewhere on here that has other things you can try too.

Really is a shame that we have to disable or ease everything back so much to get through the day on a battery. Anyhow, I have a Velocity (which comes out of the box with the processor running at 1500) on Dark Raider. Therefore I use SetCPU to throttle the beast back, depending upon the circumstances. It only is allowed to run at 1500 when on charge and down to 400 when battery below 25 percent. I also use 2X Battery to take care of the netowrk and Wi-Fi and have purchased the andida battery for extended life. I also have JD installed, however it is rarely used - reason is that I am in agreeance with "citsong" that it takes too long to establish connections, even causing me general connection issues from time to time. So for around $25 AUD you can get through the day on a battery with moderate use and reasonable performance. I have not tried the extended battery pack, though I will probably get one of those as well...not sure which are the best???
I personally don't like the vibrate response thing, so I turn that off right out of the box, also, auto brightness is another that I set. When I go in the battery tab to see what is bleeding it to death, and most of it would be the display....
Though, vivid seem to have a smaller battery compared to other phones of similar functions and/or size, so that might be the reason I am not really seeing a very good battery life?

Actually there are only a couple phones that have a larger battery...
The galaxy note and the atrix are the ones that come to mind...
And the note has a larger screen and Samsung's rediculious samoled screen which eats battery like potato chips...

My solution was to get a larger battery (2100mAh, the largest one with stock format) and using juice defender to control my Data Connection. I am getting about 60% more using time on a normal usage whan before!
I actually have both Motorola Atrix 2 and HTC Vivid. However, my Atrix 2 would last about two days between charges, which is kind of weird. I have my personal account and company account on that phone (personal is to activate the google stuff), so it eats up data twice as fast, yet it is almost twice as long battery life.
And to update a little bit from my post before, it seems I am getting better battery life now, after 4-5 days of flashing the new ROM, let's hope it is true....or I am just going to go hunt for a bigger battery

Actually, the Samsung Galaxy Note is way bigger than either Atrix or Vivid, so with a bigger body, I would assume that a bigger battery is possible. But if you look at current phones, I rarely see batteries that are above, say, 1800mAh, let alone 2000mAh and above, stock of course.

Could you share the details on the battery?
Andida batteies are easily found on Ebay, but beware of Chinese fakes!! I got mine from a seller in Canada, all good.
I get good battery life by turning off data while I'm working . 70% with 8hrs unplugged
