Hi everyone,
I've never used an HTC Android before, although I've had a Galaxy S for a while now. Looking to get a Dream for my fiancee who's a total newbie to Android, and despite looking for answers a lot, I couldn't find what the latest CM build for G1 offers (or any other custom ROM). From what I've gathered, the G1 is severely constricted in its default form, and while it's evident that CyanogenMod is going to improve things a lot, what specifically is going to change.
My main questions:
The Android version?
Apps2SD?
Impact on camera?
Speed?
Battery life?
Touchscreen responsiveness?
Any other info that someone can highlight, regarding whether this decision is wise or not (considering that G1 is the only cellphone falling in my budget atm)?.
I found this link on CM forums, but didn't make much sense to me. Any help would be greatly appreciated
I use CM6.1 now mainly because it's a bit snappier than CM5. A major feature that's missing for me is apps2sdext. Native froyo apps2sd still puts the data of apps in internal memory so apps2ext lets you have a lot more apps installed.
I had CM6 installed on my G1 and i was pretty slow. I also had apps randomly close because I guess the phone was running out of memory. SuperD with ram hack was really fast for me and I've had it installed for the past 4 or 5 months and haven't had any issues until yesterday but IDK if its a software or a hardware problem.

Since getting a Desire, my Dream has been relegated to gym-time/weekend drinking duties, places I don't want to take my shiny new phone and get it broken or lost (also touchscreen-only keyboard just does not cut it when i'm drunk).
I used to flash a new ROM onto my Dream now & again to try stuff out, but really and truly all I want out of it now is speed and stability. I've really fallen out of the scene, and no longer have a clue what is what. Plus I just don't have the time any more :-(
Current ROM is SuperBad 1.3.3 (yes, that's how long ago I last flashed) and that is just laggy and annoying. I think it's set up with 32mb compcache and no swap. I don't really want to mess around adjusting settings to get best performance any more.
Would people mind giving their opinion on the best ROM for me? It would be awesome if you could all chip in! I honestly don't need any features out of this ROM, I don't care if it's cupcake, donut, eclair or froyo. All I want is phone/text/music functions, and for it be fast with no lag - I couldn't care less about anything else.
Thanks so much!
Go Donut, avoid anything above 1.6.
I highly recommend SuperD, it is currently the ROM I have stuck with the longest and will probably stick with for a very long time because it is indeed very fast and reliable and provides me with everything I need from a phone.
Took your advice and installed SuperD 1.11 (Black Ramhack), and it seems to be a good deal quicker than my previous ROM, and stable so far although I've not taxed it too much yet. The main improvement is that although you get the occasional pause when multitasking from app to app, that's all it is - just a pause. My last ROM used to hang for ages and you didn't know if it was going to complete the operation or not.
I suspect this SuperD is approaching the pinnacle of what can be achieved with the Dream, considering it's limited (by today's standards) hardware.
Now I'm thinking to myself "Hmmm, perhaps Froyo performance improvements can be had?" - and after I just said I didn't have time for messing around with this phone any more, lol!
Thanks again for the advice
Wow, I was suffering the same problem just like you before. I bought my Dream in April 2010. It slowed down when apps were installed.
I was annoyed at the speed of the performance. I tried a lot of ROMs, but they were all all SLOW.
A few days ago, I thought things must be changed. I bought a 4GB microSD Class 4 and used recovery to part is into three partions: 500MB ext, 3.4GB FAT32 and 96MB swap.
Than I tried out CyanogenMod 5.0.8.
I added some commands in userinit.sh to enable swap at startup.
I enabled App2SD to keep data partion clean.
I then installed TONS of apps.
It really runs well! Fast and stable!
BTW, the google-addons are installed separately so your Dream can be a phone/text/music-only phone.
Well, I am a Chinese high student and this is my first post in XDA. ^_^
I bought my gf a Sprint Hero to see if she likes using Android. Might buy an Evo or whatever comes next if she likes the platform (this is her first smartphone, I've been using them for a loooong time - since the iPaq days!)
Anyway, the used one I bought her has stock 1.5 ROM on it, and I know that the Sprint 2.1 ROM is also available. I've searched all over and see mixed opinions on if its worth upgrading or not. A lot of bugs seem to crop up in the 2.1 version, but also some new features and better app compatibility in the market.
I'm a long-time HTC device user, but always WinMo, so I'm no stranger to flashing/modding etc. But I don't want to get into that at all with her phone, she'll get angry if I try to do something and then something else breaks, so I just want whatever stock ROM "just works" best. I don't want to have to "maintain" this device.
Any advice is appreciated, thanks in advance.
Hi there. As far as what "just works"...I have used both 1.5 and 2.1 stock...some people have experienced multiple problems. I used 2.1 stock for awhile before rooting...and quite honestly, the only problems I had was occasional lag...not drastic like some have reported....and rapid battery drain. I've since rooted 2.1 and use an overclocked kernel. Now, with GPS location off (still use cell service loc.), and no task killer whatsoever...i get almost 24 hours of battery with moderate to high usage. I experience no lag whatsoever. And, quite honestly, the rooting process and installing the OC'd kernel are VERY easy. I don't know about your girlfriend, but the skeptics I know...given a few days running straight stock unrooted...came back in a couple days begging me to root and make their Hero "run like mine".
Thanks for the info. I might go that route. Are you running a ROM with Sense? Did you just root the stock Sprint Sense ROM and OC it?
Any more help would be appreciated, like I said I've done a lot of ROM flashing and modding in the past but always on WinMo, I'm new to Android but have been reading up on these forums so I think I have a good sense of what needs to be done now. I'm not afraid of rooting / flashing processes, but I really don't want to put on ROMs where little weird glitches are going to piss her off. I don't mind dealing with that on my own phone, but this really does need to be a one-time job where I can just had it off to her and never have to deal with it again
I am running a ROM with Sense. It's the actually the HTC ROM that has been rooted. Here is a link to the thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=703267 It runs sweet. I also formatted the stock 2gb SD card to ext for use with Apps2SD and it worked flawlessly after flashing the ROM. There are plenty of straightforward instructions here in this forum. Like I said, I think your g/f will be very pleased with the speed and battery life using this message. I flash a couple roms now and then to try something new, but always come back to this 'cuz it "just works".
1.5 is faster & more stable imo...but outdated. 2.1 provides a few new features but it's really up to her which one she wants to use. try them both out.
for 2.1 id use the stock rooted sprint rom
for 1.5 id suggest the pancake rom.
If you flash one of the OC kernels, just know that not all phones can handle the OC speeds, especially on bootup. If you decide to flash an OC kernel, MAKE SURE you nandroid backup first in case that phone goes into bootloops or freezes after the new kernel. Start with the 691mhz one just to test, then if all is good you can move up to 710mhz or 768mhz if you want more.
Also, to answer your initial question, I personally think stock 2.1 is much better overall than 1.5. Without even considering OC kernels, extra apps, widgets, etc....Android 1.5 didn't even have native CDMA support, so it had to contain a lot more code/tweaking for our Sprint build, which is why it runs so slowly and laggy. 2.1 includes CDMA support which automatically makes the code smaller and it means the OS automatically runs more quickly and smoothly on almost all HTC Heroes.
The only big consistent issue I've heard of on stock 2.1 is terrible Bluetooth functionality. Most other issues are hit or miss cases that aren't very common.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for the info, this has all been helpful.
To update, I dove in and just updated to the latest 2.1 Sprint official ROM (.6). I don't really think she has a current need to be rooted, as she doesn't use many apps, and doesn't need tethering.
If the need arises in the future for these things, I'll just flash the ROM linked above, or flash back to .5, root, and re-flash. Maybe by then there will be a root for .6 anyway and it will be even easier yet.
I'd also like to post my experience with 1.5 vs 2.1 I am not sure why everyone feels 2.1 is so much slower. I'm guessing it's because they haven't applied the .6 patch, which in addition to fixing the root exploit, also adds a bunch of speed enhancements in the UI.
2.1 is much faster on her phone than 1.5, especially scrolling in long lists, using the dialer, and even swiping between homescreens. She's quite happy with it, and I don't have to hack any fixes due to broken stuff in ROMs, so I'm happy too
I'm liking Android enough that I think I'm willing to buy another phone to play with, I got sick of dealing with flashing and hacking on my WinMo devices, so I went to iPhone. But I want a new Android HTC phone to play with, I think I'll buy a Nexus One or something.
Hi
I've been doing some reading on this forum since I got my phone back from the "repairsman" due to malfunctioning speaker
So, now I've falshed the latest Modaco release, but however, the phone really get's laggy when you fill it up with apps. I get around 30mb of free RAM when everything is installed and set up.
I also experienced great improvement of my old Desire HD when I flashed to CM7 (gingerbread ROM).
So, now my question is, even though Paul did all his fantastic work on optimizing the stock ROM, are we going to experience the same "laggyness" in the future?
You might call me a bit of an app freak, but I never had these problem with my former HTC, and You would think the O2X should do at least as well.
Im aware that the O2X has lesser RAM, but shouldn't it be enough?
Could it be solved with the 2.3 release, or perhaps a CM7 custom ROM in the future?
I would really like to use all my apps and widgets as on my DHD.
What's your oppinion?
Well future isnt the future if you knew it. But my guess is that the potential of this device is by far not reached and will be greatly improved with the next update.
Since this device is so easy to root i would also say that the dev community will support it for quite a while.
Looking forward very optimistic. But as this tegra device is the first of its kind on the market we might have to live with the fact that upcoming devices use their potential better.
Sent from my LG-P990 using XDA App
I guess the problem with the MoDaCo ROM is that's at the end of the day, it's still built on LG's effort.
I suspect CM will be a whole different kettle of fish.
Download MinFree Manager from Market and set different values. I set "Aggresive" settings. It changes value when apps are killed from RAM.
Hello everyone! Currently I am using Nookie Froyo with much joy, however i have read comments about the greatness of CM7 and its the best thing since sliced bread. So, i have 2 questions: Would CM7 be a worth-while upgrade from Froyo(If so, please say why). Second question. If i were to upgrade, how would i go about upgrading it? Ive heard about there being certain issues with going to a new version. Hopefully you guys can give me a hand with this, and i very much appreciate any input. Thankyou.
Didnt use Froyo before, but I think the main disadvantage of CM7 is the non-sleep matter that drains the battery.Except that, I think CM7 has many to offer.
About the upgrading matter.Since CM7 its different then Froyo, for sure U would have to wipe system data and make clean install.
Nookie Froyo user here. Basically they offer the same functionality on most of your needs. Gapps work except for maps (cant find your wifi spot but directions etc work). I havent ran into a app that ran on CM7 that didn't run on NF ie netflix. That said, it is def. a smoother experience with CM7, and apps seem to run faster. I switch because the battery drain was to much for me, although NF has its own issues.
Get ready though the sleep issue is close to getting resolved or at least a respectable battery life.
Hi all. After looking at the galaxy s3 and htc one x, I can't help but think that my n1 is getting a bit old. I like the phone as a whole, but after using something newer (even a galaxy s1!) my n1 just feels a little pokey.
With my desire for something different, I decided to try a few new roms on my n1 (I have been using CM7 for well over a year now). I started with a version of ICS (BCM RC4) and while it was neat, it felt quite slow in various applications. I then decided to try something completely different and loaded MIUI (gingerbread) Q...something. I was very impressed by MIUI, though I ran into a few small bugs and ultimately went back to CM7.
After my foray into various roms, I am left wanting a faster, stable experience on my n1 (or possibly a new phone). I am not in dire need of a new device, I do have a couple complaints
-I hate the virtual keyboard on my n1 (yes I have tried swype and others but I am convinced that the touchscreen on the n1 is just inferior)
-The built in vibration sensor is super loud!
Does anyone have any suggestions for a faster, stable rom on the n1? Or advice?
SpazeDog ICS (previously BCM) on N1 works pretty smooth (If not, consider keeping the app data on the system storage instead of sd-ext; also try setting higher SD cache, e.g. 1024KB)
I am from CM7.2 and feel the ICS is comparable in speed and has nicer touches.

I think it is actually a little faster than cm7.2
I hope so ... any particular tweaks you did?
I tried supercharger but I messed it up. Does that really help much?

Nope, nothing special... just installed it. You will need to resize your partition via blackrose etc - check out the installation guide if you need any help.
