I'm using the stock 2.2.1 firmware which works great apart from one bug..
When I open contacts.. it doesn't close properly and runs in the background. If I go to task manager and kill it the whole GUI restarts itself.
Also if I leave contacts open it seems to eat up memory (upto 80MB at times)
Does anyone know a way to fix this?
I like to know also....
Same thing happens on the vibrant. A fix would be really nice

This happens if you installed the update to the samsung task manager through samsung apps. Uninstall the update to revert back to the original version and it will close the contacts app
^Thank you veryyyyyy much. This also removed lag when entering contacts for me!!! B)

Hi
I'm running cyanogen 4.2.4 and its AWESOME. But I've found a problem which I'm hoping someone on xda can help fix. Everytime I'm running an app (browser, messsaging, etc) and either I lock my phone, when I unlock it the app I was running is automatically ended. This has now got a bit annoying as my phone is set to timeout after 30 seconds and if I'm @ work and I'm halfway through texting someone but I have to get back to work I find my phones locked and the message disappears
Thank You in advance
Ps - I'm running stock 2.0 theme
regarding apps closing on their own
The first thought that comes to mind is... Are you running a theme? Are you using a task manager type app? If so are the apps you're seeing end on their own in your exclude list? Most task manager apps have a settable time to stop all running apps to free up ram and save battery. I've tested your issue and I can't seem to duplicate it. So I'm leaning on the idea you have a task manager app turning them off for you. If there is an app you don't want to close, then put it in the "exclude list" and you should be fine
and if that doesnt work you can always wipe and reflash
I'be had fairly poor battery performance. When i went into running services i saw that quite a few were running that i didn't start up myself. Like Facebook. Tripit, hootsuite. I've made sure that notifications have been turned off but these apps are still loading up. Any way of making sure they don't load unless i manually load them?

I've been using watchdog. It lets me know when an app is running in the background and lets me kill it. If there's an automatic solution, I'd like to know about it too.

Don't use task killers/managers. It's like shutting your computer off repeatedly without shutting it down properly and has the ability to screw **** up.

Agreed, task killers... kill batteries.
Honestly, having it run in the background doesn't kill your battery. Its the syncing. I'm assuming you are NOT rooted? If so, then there are a number of apps to help you, primarily Titanium Backup so you can FREEZE the app.
If you want to have a quick free fix, go under accounts, and turn off sync for those apps. Saves battery life like you wouldn't believe.
There's also an app called "LTE Switch" that brings you to the LTE Menu so you can switch to CDMA (Also a HUGE battery saver)
Good luck!
I am rooted and running UNL3ASH3D V2.0. And yes I understand it's the syncing that kills the battery. I've turned off syncing on these apps but they're still loading which makes me think they are still using at least some battery. None of these programs (like Facebook) are listed in Accounts.

None are showing under Accounts? Hmm, thats odd. Usually, when you first get your phone, it asks to set these up. What all apps start up upon reboot? And you are NOT rooted, correct? I'll do some research
I'm not using the Social Networking app. Standalone versions of Facebook, Hoot Suite, etc.
What I'm using is a program that is a part of my file explorer, ES Task Manager. Instead of KILLING the apps, I can force them at startup to not run. So I stopped Gun Bros and Contract Killer from running at startup because they had these annoying notifications they would send me about buying in-game stuff and really didn't need to be run at all. And I couldn't find a way to turn them off lol, so this works out well for me. If you don't want something running at startup, you can do it this way, and it could potentially help battery life because it would only run when you tell it to. And you need root access to do this.
Great suggestion

Look for program called "Startup Manager" in market - works great!
hello...i used a auto start manager, works great..but i also want that when i close facebook from recent app that it kills the process...in rom tools task manager i see that facebook is a hidden app (like whatsapp) so the built-in task manager doesn't kill it when i close the app..any ideas how to make the facebook app "visible" so that the task manager auto kills it like other apps and games?

People say that but whenever I haven't used one, I can notice the difference in performance. My bionic runs better with ATK.

I was wondering if anyone with the SGS I9000 has any delay's when opening the contacts page?
I have my contacts synced to facebook and gmail and 90% of the time when I try to open my contacts i get a black screen with the status bar at the top for about 10-15 seconds before my contacts load.
Is there a fix for this?
Running Stock 2.3.3 JVH.

Only a few apps, phone works fine in everything else generally it's just the contacts which lag. It get's better if I restart the phone every couple of days. When I do that a lot of the time the contacts open instantly.
After running an application and then trying to open contacts takes quite a while.
Would it be worth trying a different gingerbread version?
Yeah, or you can try different kernel. Are using any task killer?

I'm running stock ics 4.0.3 rooted with GL Notecore Kernel v 3.15.
i'm getting a lag in opening the dialer and contacts. Is there any way this can be corrected ? Please help.
Have u tried to clear contacts data or cache from settings.. applications...contacts. ?
U may also try another dialer other than stock dialer and contacts as Go Contacts, this may solve all of ur problems..

same here...I've just learned to live with it.
There must be some way to speed up the process. can't we odex the two applications alone for better performance ?
Edit : Can someone who can work with the file-system odex phone and contacts .apk based on this and repost the files.

Exactly, but with the note running better specs, it must open faster. I don't know what's wrong in here. Hope this thread finds a solution.
Can someone turn the spot light in here. please.
Help wanted. Some dev please help.

I'm no dev but it's common for the contacts or phone application to open with a 1 or 2 seconds delay if they are started for the first time. Every succeding start is considerably faster. Do you use a task killer? Next time you want to open the contacts or phone application take a look at a task manager whether the corresponding apps are already running in the background or at least cached. If they are they should open almost immediately. If they are not what you described is absolutely normal.

Hi guys,
I was experiencing the same problem so I tried some other apps and I found one that in my opinion is the best - exDialer (it's free)
It opens very fast, has all functionallity of the stock dialer, and has also skinning capabilities, which I set to ICS (blue fonts on black background).
Give it a try - I hope it helps you!
I tried it. But then having two applications to perform the same task becomes useless ri8. Just one doubt, why a powerful device with 1.4Ghz process. A full gig if Ram take so long to process a simple app and that too a system app.?

I don't know the reason of the lag - but it is there and is really annoying. I had exactly the same thought as you - but I think this is related to TouchWiz UI.
Regarding having two apps for the same task is no problem to me - I just defined the exDialer as default and the stock dialer never comes up again.
And for me is common to have more than one app for the same task - I have 3 browsers, 3 e-book readers, 2 RSS organizers, 2 file browsers, and so on.
What I do is to try many different apps and eventually I find the ones that best suit my needs and then uninstall the others.

Does the stock s3 contact app open faster? If yes we can use that.

I had the same problem, while on Criskelo rom. I've gone to 4.0.4 , rooted and speedmod 3-6 kernel , and now I dont have this issue anymore. However, I belive that if you close your dialer, or contacts by using the back key, instead of Home key, you will always have this "lag". You should close your contacts and phone app , by pressing the home key.

Anyone knows? I searched a bit and some said ATK (Advance Task Killer) may cause this. Strange since i always press Menu-> Exit ...
Also i have a moded mms.apk to dont have limit in SMS, but i don't think is either of them thats causing this... or Tasker... When I had it before SotckLite 7.1 it worked fine...
Try reflashing the rom.
