I have never used anything android before and just want to make sure before I decide anything.
Rooting will delete anything currently on my NC Correct? So all my books will be gone Right? Second, will I be able to reconnect to my account and re-download my books?
I have a stock NC with 1.1.0 and want to root so I can tweak the cpu and make it work with ad hoc so I can connect it to my phone, but I want to make sure that I can still access tn b&n shop, plus maybe get angry birds or something... ;-)
For rooting 1.1, one quick option is the unofficial auto-nooter 3.0 in the Development forum. I would consult the nook devs website and follow their instructions for version 1.01. They are a bit more clear about how to go about things. Look around at the other options to see if you might prefer them instead.
I don't think auto-nooter will clear your data. Consult the nook devs page to double check.
Auto-nooter will definitely allow you to get angry birds and the like.
Truthfully cannot help you with the rest, sorry.
And thats my first XDA post. I sincerely hope this helped and that I didn't get anything wrong. A little new to this myself, but I wanted to contribute.

If you use the AutoNooter 3.0 it will not Delete anything on your internal memory for your Nook color. However you will need to use a SD card to write the Nooter to and anything on that SD card will be erased so back it up first. you will still be able to use all the features of the Nook Color after rooting Except For the "In Store" Features such as reading a book free for a hour. but syncing your library and buying from the online store will not be effected.
I suggest you leave your nook in stock rom (not root); and get a fast SD card for running froyo latest build. What rooting gives to you are market and admin access. You can have that from froyo.

flash
hi, i installed autonooter 3.0 now and I was wondering if is there anyway to install flash player to work with this rooted version?
I'd rather not spend money on another SD card. I only have a 4GB class 2 (barebones I know) but I do want to keep the stock, but want to adjust the cpu to make things a little smoother and allow the adhoc for my phone as I don't have wirelss at work. Other than that I love my Nook the way it is so no real need for froyo IMO. As for the in-store options..I have never brought my nook into a B&N lol, so I didn't even know there were in-store options lol.
I would suggest a higher class SD Card. There have been "reports" of low class SD cards not working...not sure where these are...but they have the warnings. They are there for a reason.
I like my root with 1.01 BN Update. I am preparing to un root and apply BN Update 1.1 along with AutoNooter 3.0 over the weekend. I am happy with out Froyo and I am still one of the odd balls that still uses this as its intended purpose...an E-Reader lol
AutoNooter 3.0 is build on Android Eclair 2.1...there is no flash support for this OS. If you want flash support, search the forums here Froyo options to get flash.
Good Luck

I too like this as my eReader. I used autonooter 3 last night (on a class 2 card) and all went well. I now have access to the market and my gmail and such...not sure what super user does but it is there lol.
How do I sideload an .apk?
Okay something else weird has happened now. When I click NookColor Tools it just brings me to the regular settings menu...
edit: nm reboot fixed it.
new question....How do I edit permissions for folders and such so I can copy/paste an apk into system\app? I don't have root explorer (that is the apk I am trying to move) and I can't get ADB working...I am using the Free version of Astro Filemanager.
I rooted my 1.1.0 and did not lose anything I had on my Nook. I used AutoNooter 3. I bought a class 4 4gb PNY brand microSDHC with adapter and a USB SD card reader. After the root, I reformatted the microSD card to use for the Nook. I am now debating about changing to Froyo so I can use flash, but I'm still researching.

I tried that but it says "Installation of download apks is not supported"
i have a noob question!
I recently bought a NC and was able to Auto-Nooter 2.12.25 successfully.
My question is this: Where do the Market-downloaded apps go file-wise? I am looking in the free ASTRO file manager but I can't seem to find an apps directory.
Thanks.

They should be under system/apps. Make sure your browsing the Book and not the SD card. You might need Root Explorer. I can see the apps with Astro, but can't do some things to them with root access.

Not sure. I just download an .api and use Astro to access it and it let's me install it. What app(s) are you trying to install?
Did you enable non-market apps in the NookTools?

By fast do understand the sd reader in the nook is rated class 6. Buying a class 10 is a waste of money and can cause problems. I would have mentioned this in the DEV forums but having less than 10 posts elsewhere prevents me from including that information where it is most needed but it should help you.

got all my install problems ironed out...is there a way to get the app links onto the stock B&N 1.1 home screen? and I was trying to install a game "Legends of Arcana" and it can't see the SD card to install it...anyway around that?

ADP builds of Android do not have TMobile apps such as Amazon MP3. This has been discussed ad nauseum if you had bothered to search.

It's a protected app. If you need it that bad that I suggest you go back to an RC build and do research before blindly flashing whatever build of Android is at the top of the forum.

If you still have the RC firmware you can just unzip it copy the amazon apk out and install it into the adp the amazon works. I dont think anyone has the IM app working though
We should have an official rc update from tmobile real soon, which will have amazon mp3, myfavs, etc...
Just open a RC33 update.zip and extract the file from /system/app. Then you can install it by adb push.
Verified as working. I just added it to the app folder of Dudes 1.1 build and then did the update and it works just great. Purchased and downloaded a song to verify.
Here it Is

enjoy it works for me...
Really Bad,
In Germany it cannot charge my creditcard... It has enough money on it.

TY SolemnWishing, this is how I got the app on my SD card to begin with - yours is a very helpful thread for a n00b like me. Unfortunately, I was never able to get the app to open. I am not sure how I could have messed it up - pretty simple, I navigate to the app folder on my SD and click the apk file which proceeds to install Amazon MP3. No go.
If you have any ideas on what the problem might be I would appreciate the input.
Thanks again for your great tutorial
Hmm... I assume you deleted the .zip and renamed it to .apk, what firmware are you using?
I am using firmware 1.5. Yes I renamed to apk. I wants to work, just force closes before it fully loads. I also have this problem with oi music player. It used to work, now no longer loads. I wonder if my SD card is the problem. It is 8 gb, but I am sure only like a class 2 card.
Strange. I have JF 1.5 and installed the Amazon app the normal way for any app on the G1 and have rebooted several times. The app still works. I thought if you did not push the app to the G1 it would need to be reinstalled each time you reboot the device?
Well, I am pretty positive it was my SD card - after writing my post this morning I pulled the SD card and have not been anble to get the phone back since. This thread pretty accuratly describes what is going on...long story short, i think I fried my SD card and as a result am stuck on Splash 2. I have wiped several times...

uggg...all for mp3's!!!! any thoughts and lots of luck would be appreciated.

Ahh I did the same thing. Here is what you need to do, you will need to force format it. Windows will NOT detect the card, and it may even freeze your computer. Put the phone into another device, such as a palm pilot or another cell phone and format it from there. It shouldn't take very long, and when it is completed, it will likely say the memory card only has 5Kb or so of memory on it. NOW insert the card into your computer and reformat it into a FAT32 format (+Ex2 for apps to SD) and you should be good! Of course, you will need to reload all your files though. That will fix your SD card. As for your phone... you will need to completely reflash a new firmware onto it, as right now starting up your phone is looking for items on your SD card which it may need, which no longer exist.
edit: if that doesn't work, completely start from the beginning by flashing the dreamimg.nbh file for rooting.
I was able to reformat the SD card, lost all my backups of course, and had to reflash dreaming.nbh and start from scratch. No biggy, at least i still have my phone.
thanks for all the tips...once i get my card re-partioned, I will try the Amazon.apk again.
K
I got it to load - thanks for all your help.

No problem at all, glad I could help.
as a new Android user (the Nc is my first android device), im still a bit of a no0b. I just recently rooted using auto-nooter 1.0.1
a few questions, i have though.
before i rooted, my Nc updated itself to 1.1 , i then had to downgrade using stuff i found here. is there anyway i can keep it from updating itself other than turning wifi on/off?
and now that im rooted, this is the one thing that bothered me on stock. but, is there a way i can put other stuff other than B&N stuff on my homescreen? such as books i loaded myself and/or apps i downloaded from the market?
thanks for any help.
also, i use to add books via calibre, now when i add books it sends them to "my files" rather than adds them to the books list, and they dont end up showing on the "keep reading" button.
any ideas?
Congratz! Hope you like your rooted NC.
The first thing you can do is get a replacement laucher. that's the "interface" you interact with.. I recommend you try Zeam. It works very well and it's free. But you could try others such as LauncherPro, GoLauncer, etc.. Be sure to get Home Switcher first. You should be able to get all those from Market. Zeam will allow you to put shortcuts, widgets, and other stuff except folders.. You can also get a clock & weather widget such as Beatiful Widgets to make your homescreen nice and pretty. I also like to remap the Vol keys to back and menu, instead of using Softkeys, but that's up to you..
To prevent your NC from receiving OTA updates, you can look at this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932506
But I recommend you get Rom Manager then install Clockwork Mod and then update to 1.1 via this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=932145
Be sure to understand everything you are going to do first, but also rest easy in knowing that it's almost impossible to brick your NC, so worst outcome is that you might lose everything and have to start all over. Once you get Clockwork Mod installed, you can make a "nandroid" backup. It's highly recommended you do that before anything else..
As for the books.. sorry.. I don't use my nook to read books so I'm not familiar with calibre...
Well, enjoy!

cool thanks. i curently only have a small 2gb card. my Wintec 16Gb i bought is giving me problems and wont format. so i guess ill have to wait to do the rom thing.
2GB SD card is enough.. You only need 200MB free to store the NookColor_v1.1.0_r2.zip
Did you use your 16GB with the autonooter? You can regain full use by doing the following:
http://nookdevs.com/NookColor_Format_and_partition_your_SD_card_back_to_a_usable_state
Or use a free partition manager such as EASUS, http://www.partition-tool.com/ to resize and reformat the partions..
oops, so i deleted my youtube app. anyway to get it back? like i said im an android no0b, and since it was crashing i figured i could just re-install it from the market. but i deleted it first.

Yes, that's probably the fastest way to do it. Just download the .zip file from a computer into your Nookcolor's micro SD card then boot into Clockwork Mod, either from ROM Manager or by pressing power + n, for 3 seconds after you see the boot up text..
The important thing here is to have ROM Manager and Clockwork mod installed 1st. Then make a backup then install.. select pick .zip from SD card, find the .zip file then flash..
Good luck!

if not, you might have a damaged card..
First off, I'd like to thank everyone for their feedback in my previous thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=958319).
So...I'm running Nookie Froyo on my NC and loving it. I followed the instructions at NookDevs and got youtube, flash, and the market working.....for the most part. I can't see all the apps in the market that I should be able to. Like I said, I followed the NookDevs instructions (twice) for removing the geographic restrictions on the market, but certain apps still aren't showing up. For example, I can see Angry Birds Seasons, but not regular Angry Birds. Another one that springs to mind that I couldn't find was OneClick Widgets. I know there were a few more that don't come to mind now.
Any ideas on why this might be happening? Thanks in advance for any help!

I got this too running 1.1 and did auto nooter. I just got my nook 2 days ago so Im reading up on everything still. I was thinking about jumping to at least froyo soon.
No offense, but this should be in general.

After installing Nookie Froyo to SD, getting the Gapps, market, etc... I could see all the apps I use on my HTC incredible or Droid X.. I followed the instrutions at -> http://nookdevs.com/NookColor:_Nookie_Froyo_Tips for editig the fingerprint in build.prop, using the string they had, but still I couldn't find apps like FancyWidget MSNBC, Fandango, Cardstar, and a few others.
I just did it again, this time using the fingerprint of my X...
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/shadow_vzw/cdma_shadow/shadow:2.2.1/VZW/23.340:user/ota-rel-keys,release-keys
Now, when I search, I can find/install each of the apps I was looking for.
one other note.. it does try to update Youtube and google maps. I'm not sure if that is safe with this NookieFroyo or not!

The fingerprint isn't the only thing that needs changing on the Nook. You'll need to make sure the Market "believe" you have a certain amount of software and the permissions to go with it.
I won't give you a precise answer, but you could for example compare your system/etc/permissions folder with another "working" android device. You'll see that permissions are often very limited on the nook.
So if you don't care about getting your hands dirty, try copying your permissions from one device to your nook.
Just some ideas.
Sam
Oh, I forgot.. one other thing, because I had problems adding a google account and accessing the market originally, I also did what was listed in -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11377098&postcount=14
I am aware i will receive crap for asking. I am a noob and i am having a hard time gaining access to all of the wonderful apps in the marketplace. I have appbrain and it helps. But i would like as much as i could get. Even if someone has a little patience to spend some time with me so that i can become familiar with such would be awesome. If not, oh well. Still a cool tablet.

Shutoff your nook and insert the sdcard you just created
Boot your nook to sdcard
Under the "mounts and storage" menu, choose "format cache"
Press the power button to go back to the main menu
Choose "install zip from sdcard"
Choose "choose zip from sdcard"
Choose the zip file
After the image is installed, remove the sdcard
Press the power button to go back to the main menu
Choose "reboot system now"
Go into applications
Manage applications
Chose market
Clear cache not data
Now reboot with the 3.0.0.5 Version of clockwork
Choose mount
Reformat cache
Reboot again
After the nook has reboot
Configure the wireless, setup your google account
The market will now work
Install Flash and YouTube
BTW Brian FTW Great work, I like your setup the best

that looks like the guide for installing Froyo onto eMMC..
What about for those running on bootable MicroSD?
I am still having issues. However, when I connect USB, I can download Market apps. Very strange. Any ideas?
Nookie Froyo Market Won't Download
The easy fix for me . . .after installing the 8gb customized nookie froyo rom was to pull my sd as booting, or as shutting down. This enabled me to finally boot into recovery. Once you do get booted into recovery RE-INSERT THE SD CARD, then FORMAT CACHE (scroll through the various options and you'll find it) Do this, and your market should start working again . . .forget about the clear data, clear cache, force stop, reboot steps. Just format the cache when you figure out how to boot into recovery, as the rom i used didn't boot into recovery when the option was selected from Clockwork. Btw, I am booting from sd with Nookie Froyo, stock nook is untouched.
To summarize
Find a way to boot into recovery
Make sure your sd card is inserted
Format cache and reboot
Customized Nookie Froyo - Can't see market apps
Sorry all, I'm very new to the nook. I did my best to try to look around for an answer to this question, please forgive me if I overlooked something.
Anyway, I put the customized Nookie Froyo on an 8GB SD card and everything has been working great. However, some of the apps wont show up at all in the market. For instance, google maps is not installed, nor will it show up via a query in the market. If I go to market.android.com, it tells me my device is unsupported for the map application.
Can anyone give me a tip to get me started on fixing the issue?
Thanks everyone!
EDIT
Nevermind, I followed the directions on the nookdevs.com tips section and got it working...I just needed to dig a bit further.
Thanks everyone!
I am having a problem with the Nook app on CM7 (using the 4th nightly and the OC kernel.)
Doing some quick searching and extensive looking hasn't yielded any results directly related to the following issue.
When looking in my library, if I try to download a book it just says "No such file or directory" and my other books that are on my SD card don't show up/can't open them with the app (No Application Found).
So, just wondering if anyone else has got this working, I would really like to use this as an e-reader.
Thanks

I am having a problem with the Nook app on CM7 (using the 4th nightly and the OC kernel.)
Doing some quick searching and extensive looking hasn't yielded any results directly related to the following issue.
When looking in my library, if I try to download a book it just says "No such file or directory" and my other books that are on my SD card don't show up/can't open them with the app (No Application Found).
So, just wondering if anyone else has got this working, I would really like to use this as an e-reader.
Thanks

Tried that solution and it doesnt work when trying to download books. I always get file type not supported. You?
yes, it does work when downloading books. make sure you follow it exactly.
you have to set the EXTERNAL_STORAGE value to /sdcard like it says and NOT /mnt/sdcard

I did change that but I didnt notice that I had to type out adb shell before typing su for the apk. I get permission denied, does that mean I missed something while rooting my nook?
Edit:
NM adb shell works, just didnt work from terminal emulator. Anyways tried everything from adb and a computer and still no dice. I have no clue why this is not working. The books in my files dont have the cover and when I click on it it looks like it will load then just goes back to my files again.
NM, it seems that the books that were already in my library from when I had the regular nook OS was giving me issues. I went to shop for a new free book to see what happened and it downloaded and worked. So I did it right from the beginning but kept trying the same 2 stupid books. lol Thanks
I'm not sure what's going on here.
I tried following through with the directions posted in the link. But my adb shell seems to be repeating whatever I type after I press enter. It doesn't seem to be working.
Is there something I'm doing wrong?
I'm using phiremod.
Okay, so I found something... I think.
I did export EXTERNAL_STORAGE /sdcard
and I got
export: /sdcard: bad variable name
Any suggestions?
WORKING Nook ereader app on Nook Color running CM7 from sd card
I wanted to be able to have access to 2 barnes and noble libraries on the same device. I looked around and this is what I came up with. You don't need to do any really tricky or invasive mods and it works great. I'm mostly a moron so I wrote this for people who are like me, please don't be offended if you have to say "well duh" alot.
I would read the notes at the bottom of the post after you read this.
1. I prepared a CM7 sd card with google apps!!! using this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
***(I used the stable CM-7.1.0-RC-1-encore-signed version + current gapps, but it should work with any current CM7 nightly)
2. I powered down my nook completely, inserted the CM7 sd card, powered it back up, and let the CM7 installer routine run. The installer shuts the nook off when complete, then I rebooted into CM7. After registering to my google acct and getting to the home screen, I clicked on the icon in the bottom left corner (3 little horizontal lines) and selected Settings>Applications>Unknown sources...check that box.
3. Opened the Market app. Searched for "appinstaller" and installed AppInstaller by FunTrigger. Then I completely powered down my nook and removed the CM7 sd card.
4. Then I downloaded an older version of the Nook ereader app (ver 2.5) and put it somewhere in my filesystem that was easy to locate (you will be locating it from linux) from here:
http://www.freewarelovers.com/android/app/nook
5. Then on a PC running Linux (ubuntu 11), I plugged the sd card I put CM7 on into my computer. In linux you can see all the partitions...in windows all you can see is boot. I opened the "CM7 SD CARD" partition, and I put the nook.apk file I downloaded from freewarelovers right in there.
6. I reinserted the CM7 sd card into my nook and booted it back up. I went to applications, ran AppInstaller and clicked on the "nook.apk" icon and installed it. Registered my B&N account normally and populated my library.
Notes:
* DO NOT add the nook.apk into the native OS. This is only for CM7. If you try to add this app to an OS with the native nook reader working (unrooted/nootered) the device gets stuck in a boot loop which you will have to use CWM or 8 fail boots to recover from.
* I bear no responsibility for any damage you may do to your device by using this method. That said, it is almost impossible to brick a nook color, especially using a sideload OS. If you think you did just look around the forums, there is lots of information on how to unbrick a nook color.
* If you do not have Linux running on anything to read the CM7 partitions, you can google "reading ext4 filesystems in Windows" and figure out how to do that. Mac is Unix based, so maybe you could use a mac and just hope no one finds out. I highly suggest you just make a live CD by following the directions here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCD
* Incidentally, you can use this method for sideloading any apps into your sd-based CM7 environment.
Why would you need to sideload the Nook app? Is it hiding in the market these days??
No it's there but you can't download it. Either says invalid device or it won't give you the option to install at all.
EDIT: I updated to a current nightly and it allowed me to download the ver 2.6 Nook reader, but the sign in screen is garbled and it won't communicate with the B&N servers. Had a similar issue with Netflix, which I also sideloaded an older version of and works well.
@ mastigia.
Firstly, very appreciate your effort and post instructions for others.
Secondly, why would you want to go with that route?
At least, there are 2 options installing Nook App with ease.
a. Download and install directly from Market. (see note 1)
b. If for sideloading, just use usb cable to tranfer the .apk over, no need to remove the uSD then insert into Linux just to copy the file.
Note 1: If you can't see Nook App on the Market, then fix your Market first.
Note 2: another option (would be 3rd) is using ADB (either over USB or wireless to push file over)
why oh why

Ok...
a. I CAN see the app on the market. The app currently available is ver 2.7 which from the previous build of CM7 I was using had "Incompatible Device" where the "Install" button would normally be. So, I updated to CM7 nightly 209 thinking I was an idiot. And hey, whaddya know, that made it possible for me to install the 2.7 reader from the market. But it was garbled and would not communicate with the B&N servers and caused me some really crappy synching issues later which I won't go into here.
b. This is just for getting the nook.apk onto CM7 loaded on an sd card. The prob with just moving the file over usb is that windows (which I started off using) will only pick up my native emmc because the sd card partition I want to move the .apk to is in an ext4 partition. Using adb wireless I was unable to find the mount point, once again probably for the same reason.
So, to clean that up I would say just plug your nook into linux and move the file over usb and that would probably work and thanks for the suggestion, I just did not think of that.
Ya know this is kind of a silly and unique issue. I got my gf a nook color, she wants her own library and an unrooted nook (warranty). She also wants access to MY library (which has alot of books she would like to read) and apps like netflix (which also requires a legacy version). Books are the primary reason we got nooks. So for someone like ME, thats the post I would need.
Anybody having force close issues with the latest Nook app? I'm running 213 and I can download but anytime I try to open anything I get a force close.
Hi all,
I got one of those $199 Nooks on eBay, for the express purpose of using it as a decent-quality poor man's tablet.
I chose not to root it, and left the stock ROM alone, instead installing Honeycomb onto a microSD using the method described on nookdevs. (Can't post links yet, too new)
I then enabled the Android Market using the method also described on nookdevs.
I did spoof my fingerprint, as if I was using a Nexus S.
I have successfully loaded SOME apps. However, in the Market app, I can't see apps I KNOW exist (TweetDeck, Facebook).
My associated device list is empty (I'm presuming this is because the Nook isn't technically supposed to be able to access the market), so I can't even try and load them from the market's website.
Anyone have any ideas?
Edit to add: I also noticed: I can view my downloaded apps through the market website, but not the market app. The app insists I have "No downloads from Android Market"
Ok. You have to root it. I suggest autonooter. It will not change your rom. It will only install software. So you can run market. Live wallpapers. Etc..... and its really easy. Just pop the sd card. And it does magic
then you can install a custom launcher from the market. I suggest adw launcher or launcherpro
Rooting and installing roms are completely different things
Hope this helps.
Edit. Autonooter will also install a good keyboard. That is much better than the stock
Nook Color via Xda App
My understanding is that since I'm running Android from an SD card, I don't need to root the original hardware, as the Nook gives boot priority to the SD card reader, if an OS is present.
You're saying that's incorrect?
(Just trying to clarify)
I don't understand what your having trouble with but you have no reason to Root your Nook. I'm running Nookie Froyo and Nookie Honey off of 2 sepperate Cards without Rooting and everything works great. Although at this time I reccomend using Nookie Froyo because Honeycomb is not up to fluff yet because it wasn't made from the Honeycomb SDK(Not yet available) but the Preview Image(Think Demonstration or Demo version) Running Froyo instead will probably solve your problems.

You are correct. You can continue to run from your sd and never mess with your emmc. Personally I prefer running off the emmc, if for nothing else performance reasons. Since it is just about impossible to brick these things (because the boot priority is to the sd card), I suggest experimenting. You can always get back to stock.

Well, I tried Froyo. Same problem. Guess I'll have to accept that my "poor man's tablet" won't give me full access to the Market. Hopefully an update somewhere (like a ROM based off the SDK) will fix it. 'Til then, no TweetDeck for me!

That would be awesome Japzone. Do you have Facebook too?

perhaps reverting your fingerprint would be helpful? I'm running HC from the SDCard and I've installed plenty of apps from the market.
I was unable to find Facebook before today, but it showed up just now in a search (using the fingerprint set in the rom) and installed just fine, but FC's on startup. Tweetdeck also shows up for me, but I don't plan to install it anytime soon

Here's the answer - at least it worked for me without having to get my hands dirty with a lot of command line work (swore that off after leaving DOS batch files behind) - used to refresh Android Market for my Nook Froyo (2.2) emmc install:

I would love to have a working APK of Tweetdeck. I downloaded it from the Market, but it just says "Application Not Installed."
Thanks!
Appreciate it. I tried sideloading an apk I got from someone else, and it doesn;t work. I'm using TweetCaster for now.
