[Q] Scrambled Stock Froyo? - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Been happy with it since December. Had problems yesterday rebooting after removing battery - an application had frozen. Can't recall which one. Eventually got it to reboot, but all the home screens were wiped and a number of apps had simply gone. Some that were left insisted on force close. The ones I use mainly are OK up to a point but they usually don't remember that they have run before after sleep - so I have to go through all the terms of acceptance and redo the settings.
The 3 button combo no longer seems to work - although I never did try it with Froyo.
Help appreciated
Got 3 button combo to work eventually!

I've reinstalled various apps and all is well now it seems. I remember what the app was that screwed things up. It was Samsung AccuWeather Clock. Had problems with it before. Don't know why I bothered trying it again - a foolish mistake I think!

check the lost file directories.. my guess is you have some dsk corruption.

Phone becoming unresponsive after FRF83 OTA

I received my OTA to FRF83... and now my phone seems to be freezing up every so often while doing basic tasks... even waking up the phone sometimes freezes at the unlock screen. Anyone else getting this? My phone is UNROOTED and official. FRF72 ran fine... not sure whats going on but its REAL annoying.
I even tried factory resetting and still getting the same issues.
Any ideas? Can I manually go back to FRF72 somehow?
Can you clear the cache and dalvik cache via recovery, if you have stock recovery? I know you can if you have a modded recovery.
if not, then maybe it's an app or something hogging memory

I just tried "clear user data"... thats about all I get with stock recovery. I don't think its an app considering I deleted everything and it still continued to freeze.
Can I delete Dalvik from ADB even unrooted?
I get frequent lock ups and freezing on an unrooted AT&T with 2.1. Seems too many apps load up and even though they may be in the background not using resources, the overall memory drops to about 25 MB. Go get ProcessManager from the market and kill the apps running. Some will restart but it will cure the lockups. I also disabled a handful of things on startup, stopped using live wallpapers and routinely kill apps to free up memory because of the lockups. Maybe Froyo 2.2 will correct this issue. Seems most of the rooted guys don't have any of these issues, so it must be this version of firmware.

Like I said... I factory data reset so there where NO APPS. and the phone still comes to a screaching hault after a few minutes of jumping in and out of apps. It freezes to the point I have to remove the battery. Becomes completely unresponsive to touch.
As a side note, ive been using android since the first G1 on pre-order... I know how it works and how you need to use a task killer to keep stuff running smoothly... This however is extremely odd as it completely freezes.
again, only started after my OTA update to FRF83.
thanks for the input. I guess i'll have to send back my N1 for the forth time to HTC... getting pretty sick of this. That Iphone 4 or Galaxy S looks better everyday.
You don't need a task killer manager since 2.1. Froyo is even better at handling memory.

i noticed the same thing on my phone today...unlocked phone went from ERE27 to FRF50 to FRF83 yesterday......
today it seems to freeze...from time to time - i thought it requires a battery pull but if i wait long enough it will be ok again.
anyone know what the issue is?

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Mines also an unlocked phone. Wonder if that has anything to do with it.
Ugh we need frf90 to come along and fix this!
The Same here
It happened to me right now, My phone hanged and I forced reset it, it happened one time when I was on FRF72 and one time now on FRF83. it was after a phone call and I couldn't unlock the phone, touch screen didn't work but it did work for power button menu so it should be a software problem, I thought it should be something incompatible between launcher pro and FRF 72 and FRF83 but it seems it is not the case.
I have the same problem. Went from ere27-frf50-frf83. I thought it was launcherpro so I uninstalled it.
Still getting freezes on unlock...and switching between Apps. Sometimes need battery pull sometimes just some time for the phone to catch up.
I had previously switched from frf50 back to ere27 because I couldn't stand the constant need to pull battery because phone freezes.
issues i have with frf83 is not as serious as frf50 so I think I will still stick with it for a few days and see what happens.
Just really need the official ota.

I just upgraded to the 2.2 (FRF83) yesterday, already had to pull the battery twice in one morning because it just froze up..
What the fu*k did they do! The 2.2 prerelease was fine hadn't had any crashes at all in the month I used it.
Edit; make that 3 times.. WTF!
Now, I'm extremely tempted to just root the phone but I was sticking with official builds for stability, I really didn't think it would get worse..
Yup having the same problem... Had to pull the battery twice today due to freezing and the same thing yesterday... It just started happening to me. Got 83 when it first came out, and its now starting to freeze. Idk what the deal is..
I still have no idea what these updates do.. What's different? I'm talking about the frf50, 72, and 83.. Froyo by it self seemed fine, what's new??

[Q] Something is crashing after boot

Hello,
for a few days now i have something strange going on with my galaxy s. When i reboot the device, somewhere around the moment you can enter the pincode for the sim, the phone shakes one time first and and then two times as if there is something crashing.
After that all seems to be working fine... That is, until i notice up to two times now, an app went missing, from which i can't remember i removed it. After i reinstall the app, all settings i configured before for that app where there in place...
I am not sure if these two issues have something to do with each other...
I am running the stock Froyo rom 2.2.1 with the speedmod kernel (k12t)...
Is there someone out there who has an idea?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Mart
Did you recently change to the froyo 2.2.1 rom, and did problems only occur after changing?
Did you do a full wipe when changing?
Thanks you for the reply...
well no, i am running the 2.2.1 for a few weeks... As far as i am able to point to the moment it started it was just after i removed the battery when the phone was locked (i mistakenly thought it was off). After i placed back the battery and started the phone, i started noticing the possible crashing...
A day or 2 later i noticed an app was lost, the icon was still on the desktop, but it was a green android (like that from the market) and won't start. Because i didn't remember removing the app i looks strange to me. After reinstalling the app all settings i configured before where in place, as if wasn't gone for a while... That's why i notice it, because when i remove an app, i normally make sure everything is removed including settings...
Up until now i have found two of these in a strange way lost apps...
Because there was some time between the removing of the battery with the start of the first issue and noticing these lost apps, i am not really sure they are connected...
It seems that you have any kind of data corruption. If the phone shakes 1 and then 3 times, it is saying that some process has stopped. Also if you lost some app without your intervention... looks like I said. Consider backup your data, wipe and reinstall.
Good luck

[Q] Froze while playing Angry Birds then won't reboot

I haven't done much with my Captivate other than the One Click Lag Fix. I did one OTA firmware upgrade to the "JH7" version. The phone's been working fine for the most part since I got it in September (it had on rare occasion turned itself off, but it wasn't frequent enough to bother me). This morning, while playing Angry Birds, it froze and became unresponsive. So I opened the back and took out the battery, reinserted the battery and restarted the phone. It would not do anything past the Galaxy S splash screen and shut off. I tried the 3-button restart several times, even did the "reinstall packages" option, but no improvement. The phone just won't go beyond the Galaxy S splash screen and shuts off.
I think there's something wrong with the system recovery too. It stopped on "installing muti csc" and going no further. I don't know much about the system but that doesn't seem normal to me.
What can I do now to get my phone working again? Thanks!
Safest thing to do is probably to use Odin and flash back to stock.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
Try using Odin 1 Click to go back to stock. Will require for you to go into DOWNLOAD mode instead of RECOVERY.
Read the sticky to get Odin and basics on how to get into DOWNLOAD mode.
If it won't restore using Odin? Probably something fried internally (SDCard might have corrupted) BUT.. that is very rare and 99% of the time Odin should fix things up for you.
Thank you to both of you! I did the Odin reset and upgraded to the JH7 with the Kies mini. Now the phone is working again. Yay!
But it looks like all the programs I've installed are gone. :-( I remember installing an app that would download and restore all the apps from the market for me (I think it stores my app info online), but now I can't remember what that app is called to find it in the market. LOL! Anybody knows?
Root your phone. TiB it. Flash new rom.

lol, looks like your angry birds were really ANGRY last time ...
regarding to your apps, is it Titanium Backup or MyBackup ?
Yeah, and I finally got all the stars and golden eggs too--On both the regular Angry Birds and Seasons. Darn! Guess I'll have to play it all over again. Fun! Should go faster this time, now that I'm an expert. LOL!
The app restore program I had was a free one, and the icon looked a lot like the Android Market app icon. That's OK. Come to think of it, I've been wanting to clean out some junk anyway, so a clean reinstall of the apps I really want to keep is probably good.
Thanks again to everyone for all your help! Now on to installing Angry Birds. LOL!
You are very welcome!! Glad to hear that you're back up and running. When I started getting into rooting and flashing, I did the One Click Lag Fix and ran into problems with it and pretty much made my phone unstable.... So after that first fiasco, I flashed one of the custom ROM's with a lagfix in the kernel and haven't looked back since.
Speedmod kernel lagfix works best.
Never overclock your phone. It leads to problems.
when your phone sticks, hold vol+ vol- and power for 10 seconds to reboot to recovery mode, or remove the battery.
OK. You've talked me into flashing ROM. I was hesitant because I was afraid I'd brick my phone, but after what I did to fix this problem, I took the plunge and flashed Cogniton. Glad to be free from the bloatware. I've got a few questions, but I'll post in another forum where it belongs. Thanks again!

[SOLVED?][Q] P1010 home and search key not working

Hello,
My SGT p1010 got unresponsive (the display didn't want to turn on) and I held the power key untill shut down. After turning on again, the home and search keys are touchable (I get the vibrant feedback), but there isn't any action performed. I unfroze some samsung stuff I had frozen before that and restarted, but no effect.
As a side effect, the icons and widget (accuweather) I placed manually on the desktop disappeared, and the programs got sorted by name (not like before - the latest installed - after the earlier ones).
Was this some kind of soft-hard reset?! No info disappeared though..
Any ideas why is this happening and how to fix it?
Well, I just did factory reset and it's all ok now..
It will happen again
i had the same problem. went to a samsung store and they updated the gt software. they were sure that the update was the solution to the issue, but it happened again. please contact samsung support to make them know this important problem.
Same problem here.
Contacted Samsung. Waiting for a call.
Problem:
- Home screen reset to factory settings. Some settings like key sounds reenabled
- Home and Search key not working
All account settings and apps are still there.
Also when you shutdown the phone there is only one option "shut down". There were 3 before. Like offline mode and one other option i don't remember.

Bad Samy BAD!
happened to me just now, the KIES trick fixed for me, but not only the buttons do not worked, even my google acount wasn't registered, after unplugin the device it asked me for my acount restore settings, and also no lock screen until pluged to kies We really need an update for the P1010 even if it not froyo but this problem seems to be for a lot of users... I dont whant to connect to kies every day just for the fix
the problem keeps spreading to all reagions
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiE3BxnGjUY
I've had this problem for the past 6 weeks since I got my gt p1010. It happens a couple of times per week. Grrrrr.
The Kies solution fixes the home key & lock button issue and all the apps are there, however I get the following two things:
* All Homepage data is lost (I have to re-do all of my homepage icons)
* My browser bookmarks are all lost
Haven't done a factory reset as I'm not convinced this will fix the issue - that certainly seems to be the case for Malicieux anyway!!
Might this be something to do with pattern lock??
Has anyone found a solution to this yet?????
We need a firmware update and fast!!!
P1010 Home and Search Key not working
Hi Guys,
I have read your posts and have also had this really annoying problem.
The last time I did a factory reset, I have intentionally not installed any additional apps or setup my Exchange e-mail client, as I strongly suspect that it will be down to something like this.
I have not had any problems at all so far - where before it would lock up and reset multiple times in one day.
I have not yet installed any of the previous apps I had, but I will be installing one a day until I find it crash again.
It didn't have many apps on their but here are a list. I am curious to see if anyone who has also experienced these issues had installed the same apps as me.
Skype, BBC Iplayer, GoogleSky
or were connected to an Exchange account.
I have setup my exchance account once more today - but without checking the Sync Calender or contacts options.
It has been working for 1/2 day with still no problems.
I suggest everyone else who has this problem does the same and we nail down the offending app!
You will need to do a factory reset - not a Kies Sync fix - because you will always get the problem again (because you still have the offending setup / app)
Let's nail this down!
I have a P1000, so not sure how valid this is. I searched on Google and there appears to be an Android issue 8503 (I think?) related to this:
Home button vibrates but no action
Search doesn't work
cut-down "power off" menu
no security lock
I experienced this issue repeatedly when updating Overcome ROM, I narrowed it down to restoring backed up apps. So I've downloaded apps from the market and restored data from Titanium Backup. I think I've got a contaminated back-up somewhere.
Since not restoring apps (after trying at least twice, maybe 3x), my system has been stable. While not pinpointing the issue, I hope this helps someone...?
@ irw030370 same here...
@ snesy i think the problem lies with Skype.
my father has the same problem with his P1010 ans the same temporal solution when connecting the tab to his pc ( he does not need to start Kies, just connect it with a usb cable )
I did a reset once but installed all the SW directly after that...
strange thing is that my mother has also a p1010 same version of FW and so on and does not have that problem...
next week i'll get my hands on his tab and will perform a hard reset, and do as you suggest.
Will update my findings later on...
Greets,
T.
Edit :
With the basic install, added only skype and some email accounts. I did not have an issue.
Still looking...
Hi all
any advance on this problem?
You should update to Android 2.3.

I did not have any problems with this new version so far.

S4A Occasionally Won't Wake from Sleep

I can't figure out what's causing it. I don't have very many apps installed that didn't come with the phone, and any I did install were from the Play Store. I haven't done any modifications such as root to the device.
In order to bring it back to life, I have to either hold the power button down for 30 seconds to shut it down (or take out the battery) and power it back on.
Interestingly, if I have notifications waiting and the LED is flashing, that continues to flash even if the phone won't wake up.
I did 'disable' several of the bloatware apps in the app management area in Settings. I'm starting to think that must be what's causing it. Is there a particular bloatware app that should never be disabled? One that would cause this issue?
Other apps I've installed are things like Netflix, eBay, the app for my bank, and a TV-listings app. Pretty basic stuff. I don't think any of those would be the problem, would they?
Remaining battery doesn't appear to have an effect. It's happened with full battery and somewhat low battery.
'Services' that I use are Exchange push email and Gmail. I also have it Bluetooth synched to my car's hands-free thing.
Any help would be appreciated. Taking my phone out of my pocket to use it just to find that it's not responsive is very troublesome.
Thanks.
EDIT: For clarification, this is an AT&T version of the S4A.

maybe u can enable back all the apps that u have disabled and see if it happens anymore.
u mentioned "the phone won't wake up" and "not responsive". do u mean that the screen stayed off and u are unable to get the screen to be on?

That's right. None of the buttons wake the phone up or turn on the screen. I can tell the phone is still 'on' though. It's not like it got powered off in my pocket.
The advice you've got is sound - if you think it might be because of disabled apps, re-enable them all and see if it keeps happening. If it doesn't... well then you disable them one at a time until it starts happening again.
Then you come back to the forum again and let everyone know which app never to disable.
If it doesn't stop happening after re-enabling all the apps... well then my guess would be a faulty device. Can't think of any other logical reason for it to behave like that. So try the apps first, if that doesn't help, "return to sender".

if enabling back all system apps do not resolve the problem, try disabling all user apps to test. one of your downloaded app may be the cause.
Alright, over the past month I've done a bunch of testing. Here are my results.
1. Re-enabling all the system apps didn't help.
2. I uninstalled all my user apps. Didn't help.
3. I completely reset the phone to stock settings and formatted all storage. That didn't help.
4. I figured maybe it was something with bluetooth since it seemed to happen after I used bluetooth devices. I disabled bluetooth completely. It didn't help.
I'm out of ideas for the moment. Could the phone just be bad? I would wonder why the issue only happens occasionally.
Thanks.

Solved, rom change and ready, do not turn off more
I have the same problem in i9500. I now live in China and have purchased an s2, s3 and now the s4 from China Unicom. I have successfully rooted and flashed new ROMS (latest HK stock firmware) on the S2 and S3. When I bought the s4, it worked fine. I immediately flashed the latest stock HK ROM using Odin 3.07, After flashing, the phone is unresponsive after going into deep sleep meaning that nothing happens when I press the power button. After a long press of the power button, the phone will re-boot. Sometimes I have to pull the battery. Again, this phone is totally stock. I haven't added any applications. I re-flashed the stock China Unicom formware and I took the phone to the Samsung Service facility and they did a new flash. Phone worked great. I take it home, flash the HK ROM with Odin...same results; phone is unresponsive after going into deep sleep. I return to the Samsung service store and they again flash the phone. Phone works fine. What are they doing that I'm not doing? Could the partition table get corrupted during my flash processes. Should I try another version of Odin? Should I try a PIT file and try that? I'm downloading the ROM's from SamMobile. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Edit: I fixed this problem by upgrading to 4.3 which brought it's own set of problems.
