My current firmware, is not running good. It takes my phone like 15mins to boot, and lags alot!
I really want to get the best performance from my phone, but I was trying to stay to official firmware releases.
I am on o2, UK, and the only firmware update is from JP5, to JP6....
I am guessing this is a minimal change?
I do not know how to do I Kies hack, but its possible to use newer firmwares right? Any advice on how to do this?
Alternatively, should I update to JP6, and apply a lag fix? if so, which one should I use?
All advice is welcome!
I think you want to stay original because of warrenty reasons, right?
But.. ich you want to use a lagfix, you have to root your phone. And this is like flashing an unofficial firmware also a reason for loosing your waranty.
so if you want to stay officially, you can only update via kies without hack, or you can just try a factoryreset from the recovery menu.
With all other methods of getting a new firmware to your device, you may loose your waranty.. This is discussed very often here, because in a case of a hardware-defect your waranty is okay afaik, also if you flash an unofficial software.
If you want to know more, search the forum for waranty...
Lets say you lagfix 2.2 with some kernel like voodoo nothing else.
Then you disable the lagfix and then update to 2.2.1 using kies when it comes out.
Kies will give you a completely new flash.
Isn't it very unlikely that Samsung will pick up on your modifications now?
Mate, I am on an O2 UK contract and I was on JP5 before upgrading to JP6 in January with an O2U product code. But I never had any of the 15 minute boot problems you're talking about, nor was the odd bit of lag a real problem. Since then I got tired waiting for an O2 UK 2.2.1 upgrade, so I used the Kies hack to upgrade to JPY with a XEU product code. I know I might be technically violating my O2 warranty, but I can always flash back to JP6 via the Kies hack if I need to send the phone for repair, providing it's not totally dead in which case I'd probably report it accidentally lost under my phone insurance.

yup.. my question is simple. can i upgrade my device through kies without editing anything to kies on a routed and lag fixed device?..
why i am asking this is that i have been using my galaxy s for around 2 months and have just upgraded it through kies to an official firmware nothing much
but since i have herd about the lag fixes so much that its tempting me too much to resist.. but i really dont want to get in the situation where i will have to flash my device using odin .. cozz i have never used it... i may only route my device and lag fix it only if it can be upgraded through kies if there is any further firmware released by samsung ... and hopefully upgrading through kies will bring it back to stock rom ..
yes
(more characters?)
100% sure?? you mean to say.. that if a latest version firmware is released i would be able to flash the firmware through kies like before..?? and have you done that ever???
Hi,
Firstly, apologies if this question has already been answered. I tried using the search facility but didn't find the answer I needed.
I purchased my SGS from Malaysia. It came loaded with JG4 and the Singtel (Singapore) branding. I decided to flash the firmware to JP3 in order to get rid of the Singtel apps and the splash screen.
I have a few questions:
1. Will Kies still allow me to update to official Froyo even though I manually flashed to JP3? I'm aware that the official firmware isn't available yet for most of Asia, but want to make sure that when it does become available, Kies will let me update.
2. If I flash an unofficial European firmware onto my device, will I then be able to upgrade via Kies to the official European firmware? How does Kies determine which update is ideal for your phone? Is it based on the current firmware? Or do they check your serial number or something to determine where the phone was sold and only recommend that regions firmware? Do I need to downgrade to 2.1 in order for the Kies update to recognise that I need an update?
I know that if I really wanted to I could update things manually via Odin, but I would now prefer to stick to the official method of updating.
Thanks.
Similar difficulties
Hey,
I am having similar problems. I got my galaxy s from tmobile in uk but I upgraded my galaxy s to froyo 2.2 using Odin3. Problem is at that time I didn't have enough knowledge. The phone got upgraded to 2.2 properly but now a lot of functions like Swype don't work on it and also the Internet crashes quite oftenly also it is a little slow. I came to xda developers also in hopes to find out how to re flash galaxy s to 2.1 or fix my problems.
My advice for you is however, don't rush into anything like I did.
Regarding Swype, mine was disabled after I flashed the firmware too. Try holding down the button in the bottom left of the messaging screen to turn it back on.
Bump.
Can anybody shed some light on either question?
Is the official 2.2 update available yet via Kies?
I updated out of the box (got phone yesterday - unlocked but has some Vodafone branding in ROM) but still no 2.2 update.
Thanks

Well that's sorta the problem for me... I don't even know whether Kies will give me the option for updating to the official 2.2 firmware if it already sees that I have an unofficial 2.2 firmware installed already.
Having done some research (thanks google) I know Kies does not provide Froyo for Vodafone branded phones yet. However it appears to be due very soon.
The easiest way to get Froyo I think is to install ROM manager, then download a custom Froyo, stick it on your internal SD and flash it from recovery mode. Doc Froyo comes highly recommended
Probably not. I remember reading somewhere that kies will give you a message saying firmware not recognised.
Hi guys, I'm new here! And to the Android scene in general. Before you ask, I've been trying to use the search function, but unfortunately it says try 10 minutes later, and it said that around 15 minutes ago...
I've recently taken interest in Darkyy's 5.4 rom, but I understand with most custom made things, there can be bugs involved, and I want to prepare for the worst case scenario and be able to flash back to the original firmware, so I've got a few questions.
1)I was just wondering, which firmware is the one I need?
I live in Australia, and I am on the 3 network, and have recently updated to 2.2 officially via KIES.
If it matters, I've also rooted and voodoo one click lagfixed it, along with officially unlocked the phone via the 3 network.
PDA: I9000HVJP4
PHONE: I9000HVJP3
CSC: I9000HUTJP4
2) If I reflash original firmware, will the phone still be unlocked, or will I have to unlock the phone again with 3? I'm pretty sure they keep records of that stuff... so will they be willing to do it again for me if that is the case? Or will it not relock itself?
Thanks guys!
If you reflash it using the firmware from samfirmware.com, it should remain unlocked.
You will need to remove all lagfix before reflashing it. Always remember to remove lagfix before flashing. The root can stay.
As for Darkyy's rom, I don't know what on earth happened lately, but he completely changed the instructions for no reason (far as I can tell). The old instructions were simply to flash back to an old Eclair firmware, and then install his rom. Works every single time.
Thanks man, I'll remember to do that, but does it matter which firmware version I go with if I want to restore my original firmware, perhaps even for warrantee reasons? I have a tendancy to mess things up beyond repair...
I'd hate to bump my own topic but... Nobody can help?
As you have jp4 you should flash that from samfirmware to get back to stock should things go wrong.

Ok so i would like to update my galaxy to 2.3 gingerbread official using keis.
I live in Australia and based on what i have read the update should be out on my model of galaxy. When i plug my phone into keis it is saying i have the latest firmware. I have done some reading up on this and if i am correct some of the hacks and things i have done to my phone could cause it not to be able to update and i would like to know if this is true and how i can fix this.
Things i have done:
- I am currently running 2.2 froyo
- I have voodoo lagfix and soundfix installed.
- I used sgs tools from market to use the optus apps which came with my phone that where unusable since i was with virgin.
- I applied a 3 button fix i found as well so i could update voodoo easier. But in the end i just used Odin.
One thing i read was that i have to restore the system apps to update it. which i have done with all accept one but the .apk backup for it is not working so i cannot. Will i have to use Odin and revert back to the original firmware and start again? Or is there something i can do from here?
Short answer- You can't.
Gingerbread isn't out officially anywhere at present (there was a brief period where it was out on Kies for Scandinavia- hence all the semi-official "leaked" roms).
On past performance we're likely to be waiting a fair while here in Oz- once Official GB Roms come out from Samsung you then have to wait for all the local carriers to add their garbage to it (and - according to them- "test" it) before it gets released on kies. I'd bite the bullet and just grab a nice rom from here.
Remember if you do decide to wait for the official update, you will have to downgrade to stock for kies to recognise your right to an upgrade.
+ 120 to that NO upgrade to 2.3.3 YET .
All upgrades are unofficial .When Kies has your upgrade it upgrades
Then before update undo lagfix .
Or to be really safe reinstall your original saved rom the one you saved before you started messing with the phone .

I think using odin to flash a stock rom back before updating by kies would be safe way

Depends Kies does not recognize stock rom as product code etc dont match = no update through Kies . Stock is not network supplied firmware as original .

pretty much, unless some one has official firmware
Alright so a while back I rooted and flashed a rom to bring me to 2.3 which was unofficial. Now I'm getting sick of it and want to go back to the official route by using kies to upgrade and that. When I plug mine into kies it says unsupported device. So I'm guessing it doesn't like that I have a flashed rom? So what do I do to be able to go to the official 2.2.1 captivate from the unofficial 2.3.1
Its easier if you don't. You need a official rom like JF6 or KB1. Problem is not all devs are from the US or use ATT, so their device ID's are different. So you need to break hexcode editor to try to fix it. To be honest it isn't worth it, Kies is just ODIN with a different UI and a TON of unnecessary checks that 99.9% of the are useless and make it autofail.
