Nookie unboxing - Nook Color General

I made an unboxing video and put some music to it. I thought it was funny. Maybe I'm dumb.

Would have been cool if you smashed an iPad with the NC at the end...lol

Yes, I would have enjoyed smashing an iPad. As a matter of fact, I can't think of anything better to do with one.

NC Kid abuse?

Question guys and appreciate any feedback. I really want a Xoom but im holding off for a wifi version but I know once I do get one my 3 year old will want to take it over as he has already taken over my Evo. Hes a phone hog and a battery killer with all his angry birds and apps that he has on there lol (very proficient Android 3 year old). How durable is the NC? Like tough wise. Think itll survive a 3 year olds destruction? I was looking around and they can be found for $200 bucks online. This way I can mess around with an Android Tablet and the kid can use it instead of my phone or xoom once I get that.
I have one and it feels pretty solid to me. I even dropped mine from about chest high straight onto a hard wood floor once. Picked it up and it worked like a charm.
I have a 6 week old, but he's a little young to give it the proper "kid test" you're looking for.

Don't worry soon enough your little one will be stealing your tech toys too lol I'm just looking for a way to justify this to the wife. I'm sell her on using it for long drives in the car lol

It's a solid device with good glass. As far as I have seen, my 7 and 5 year old has not been able to dent scratch or break the NC. But get a cover. Maybe the OtterBox that's coming even.

lol .. Yeah he'll probably be stealing my tech toys before I know it. It's actually great for long drives. My wife and I drove to my parents last weekend. It's an hour drive (so not real long but still). I have the NC tethered to my Evo. She browsed the web and read most of the trip. She loved it.
I think she was pretty skeptical when I bought it at first. She quickly came to love it though. After the first week she would say, "are you taking the Nook to work with you again??" .. haha .. so I started leaving it at home. Once a solid Honeycomb port hits I might purchase her, her own NC.

Mine must not have been a good drop then. Or maybe it hit the ground just right because it survived. It was a pretty high direct drop too. I bent down expecting the glass to be cracked but it wasn't.

I can't really tell. When we drove it was at night. I've used it around an office with fluorescent lights everywhere with no problem. Glare wise it's probably about like the Evo since it's a glass surface. If I think about it tomorrow I'll check them side by side.
I let my 6 year old use mine for the read-to-me books as well as Angry Birds, though i have to remind her to be careful with it. I did get a Squaretrade warranty for it for $30 (normally $39 for 2 yrs) so that adds a little piece of mind. I'd definitely add a warranty to it if you can if you're planning to let the little one play with it.

Haha, I remember how anxious I was when I let my six-year-old cousin-in-law borrow my week-old iPhone 4 to play "AAAANGWY BIRRRDS!" (man there are an awful lot of dashes in that sentence).
With the rubberized back and solid plastic outer, I think the NC should stand up pretty well, but a case wouldn't hurt. Just make sure that he doesn't throw it across the room when he gets stuck on a level... I've been known to do that occasionally.
Taking a trip down to best buy to look and feel a nook. Taking the wifey, her interest has peaked lol

They do have a pretty solid feel. I'd recommend a silicone case. I have to try very hard to keep mine away from my three year old too. She's particularly fond of this app called Magic Marker. I'm lucky we haven't read books on it yet.

Custom Nook Color stand

Last night I got inspired (by the Netflix app ) to make a functional and nice looking stand. But instead of jumping in blindly with plexiglass or something I built a prototype out of cardboard.
I was thinking of making the final version a bit smaller so it fits nicer when vertical and maybe making a notch in it so the home button is accessible. Something I can't figure out how to fix is that the speaker is inside the stand when vertical. But other than that I'm really happy how this turned out and can't wait to make a final version.
Attached are some pictures of it holding the Nook horizontal and vertical. Any comments, ideas or questions would be appreciated. Thank you.
Not bad though if you are worried about the speaker it would be realy easy to rigup a pair of speakers with a 1/8" stereo jack on your final build
Wouldnt it just be easier/cheaper to buy one of those stands?
Im all about making custom things, but in this case, I dont see the benfit of what you made versus this: http://www.amazon.com/Arkon-Portabl...VOOY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1305477985&sr=8-2

Ah phooey! I see the benefit of DIY. True, sometimes there are cheaper solutions out there. But this user's solution gave "me" many ideas for other devices, my wife's iPad, my Evo, Books! I like the ingenuity involved in the OP's solution. I'm going to make something like this out of plexiglass--the OP's idea. 1 sheet of pl (home depot), my jigsaw, some cement, buff the edges, felt the edges to protect the nook, rubber little feet (Rite Aid), listen to jazz while I'm making it and have a blast! $20. It's going to look a lot better than a little cheap rack holding holding up a nook. Nice going!
I agree, sometimes it's about the journey, not the destination.

I have one of these and, while it's great for my XOOM, it doesn't really fit the NC very well. It's OK for landscape but if you want your NC to stand in portrait while charging you have to put the stand on a book or the edge of a table to allow space for the cable. Actually I found this thread because I was looking for a better stand.
I definitely see the advantages of DIY to satisfy your own requirements. Good luck!
I use this case stand since I got my Nook Color in January. I see that now Amazon for fulfils the orders for it now. I had to wait two weeks back then but it was worth it. No excuses not to get it now.

Color Nook or Dell Streak 7?

Streak 7 is on-sale for $299 this weekend. It appears to be better hardware-wise but it does not seem to have as much developer support. Thoughts / advise?
Thanks!
Well, first you need to understand that the Streak is a tablet by design. The Nook, while making an awesome tablet, is a hacked eReader.
The Streak will work perfectly fine with the installed Froyo and your probably don't need to do much more than root the thing (which is also one of the reasons there probably are not a lot of developers behind it...not to mention that it was cost prohibitive before as well).
The Streak will give you cameras, microphone and GPS which you won't get with the Nook.
The Streak comes with Gorilla glass (which may or may not be a big deal to you).
Honestly, if I could get a Streak 7 or the Nook Color with the Streak only being $50 more, I would totally have tapped that.
On a side note, I don't see where it is listed at $299? Can you link it? I saw it for $399 when I went to the site.

Yeah... I am going to have to look at them side by side. Thanks for your input.
You forgot one negative about the dell streak, it has horrible resolution for its size, if that matters to you.
I've heard the streak is not that great.
Still rocking the Incredible with the XDA Premium App.
Yeah, the resolution is 800x480 which is far from the 1024x600 of the Nook. However, that's not the biggest deal on a 7" screen. The reason the Nook has such a resolution is to make it easier on the eyes for reading eBooks.
I might get this for my wife though. She loves the Nook, but that girl seriously needs a GPS. She has lived here 6 years and still gets lost about 2 miles from our home. No idea which direction North is, etc. LOL But I love her...and she is hot as hell. Anyway, I digress...
I looked at them side by side and the resolution was a little better IMO on the Nook but the Streak was very nice. I am familiar with rooting, etc. so either will work. Maybe the Nook will be on sale somewhere this weekend to make it an easier decision.
personally, I would never buy any android devices that are not supported by cyanogen.... its just too much fun
IMO, it's not just the resolution that is sub par. The Streak screen is just not that vivid and colors seem a little dull. The Nook has a very good screen, on par with the Galaxy Tab. I did a side by side with the Streak and the Galaxy Tab, looking at the same multiple sites and pictures side by side, and the Tab screen was a lot better.
Also, the Streak battery life has been reported as being quite poor, and much less than the Nook.
Nook ftw obviously
When dell streak is $200 i will get one to mount in the car. I'm not pressed. It will hit that price eventually.
I know this is an old thread now, but the Streak just hit $199 at Staples with a coupon. See this thread on Slickdeals for a link to the coupon. That makes it $50 less than the Nook Color. I'm playing with both now, to see which one I want to keep.

The screen is the most important piece on any tablet. If the screen is ****, it could have an 8-core processor and it would still be a bad buy.
My 2 cents.

Well, that, and the fact that web browsing type usage the battery life is just over 3 hours, periodic use is 6 hours, and not using it at ALL is 12 hours.
And it's got a decent battery, 2800mAh, so possible it's a poorly designed ROM, but as is, yuck.
But yeah, screen res is low, probably bad viewing angles.. Someone in the office has one here but I haven't seen it yet, he's undecided given its battery life and screen res.
$200 for a 7" car nav that won't have any battery concerns, ASSUMING the backlight is bright enough for car use, isn't a bad idea though.

I guess. In addition to that, note that the display on the Nook Color is an IPS display by LG. And boy, does LG make lovely IPS displays. =)
Nook had a pretty solid dev community, AFAIK streak doesn't. 'Nuff said.

I've played with the Streak 7 now, and I gotta say it's very tempting... Microphone, stereo speakers that are louder than the NC's, GPS, bluetooth (that works >4"), haptics..
I compared screens, and obviously the NC is sharper, clearer. But ignoring direct comparisons, the Streak's screen ain't bad. The viewing angles are actually great, lay it down away from you and you can still read it, no posterization etc. I can see the pixels, and the text isn't super sharp, but I'm really used to my NC's screen.
I'm seriously thinking of grabbing one for $200 and giving it a run.

Huge deal.
Most webpages are made for 1024x768 (iPad resolution), which has been the case since the 90s. With a Nook Color you can see the full webpage across as the standard but you have to scroll down more. With a Streak you have to do a lot of back and forth scrolling and zooming to view webpages.
Hell, even high end Android phones are coming out qHD which at sizes like 4 inches is more resolution than a 7 inch Dell Streak.

[Q] Thinking of buying this phone.Need your opinions.

So, as the title says, I'm thinking of buying this phone. What's the pros and cons? Is the screen too big? Does it fit in your pocket? Is it practical?
Really need your opinions, Note owners!
Regards
Its been answered a million times but yeah when you first get it it will seem to big buts its not..
it fits perfect in all of my pants pockets with no issues..unless you wear skinny jeans or something i dont see why it wouldnt..
i mean you wont be doing things one handed like a smaller phone but this is the best phone i have ever owned.
Same here! This is by far the best phone i've owned and i have had iPhone 3gs, iPhone 4 and Lumia 800. It feels really big when you take it to your hand first time. But like said, it's still very portable and after a while you'll notice that: "damn, how small those 3,5" screens are". I can't imagine of using a phone with smaller screen than this anymore. I just don't want to. ha ha!
The screen is fantastic!! Reading, typing, watching videos, playing games...etc. is just wonderful. I'll say, go for it!
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
The screen is definitely awesome and you will not want to go back to anything smaller. I have had an iphone 3GS, Atrix, and Blackberry and the Note is definitely my favorite. It fits in my pockets as well. I typically keep it in my back pocket, but that's just me. Like MrDSL said, unless you have skinny jeans it should be fine. It is definitely practical in my opinion.
Warning:
You might get people asking you "Is that a phone or a tablet?" or other crazy questions. I just smile.
The phone is definitely big, but... the screen simply destroys any other phone. I bought the Note several monts after my ASUS Transformer and I can say if you have good eyesight it can easily replace a 10.1" tablet for web surfing and movies.
Another advantage is the size of the on-screen keyboard. In landscape mode is so big I found mor confortable to use Thumb Keyboard for a split one.
Is a great phone... a little big maybe but its thinness makes it very pocketable.
just do it
Don't even think about cons, there aren't any!
Buy it and you will change the way you see smartphones. I have it 6 months and even now i would choose it over HTC One X. The screen is beautiful, the s-pen is perfect and the power is limitless ;-)
Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2
too big for one hand use. too awesome for everything else.
Best battery backup too.
I've owned about 60 phones through the years including a couple of iPhones, and the Note is the most badass gadget i've ever owned. It's the device i dreamt about 10 years ago.
It may look too big at first, but after a day or two, not so. I'm never getting anything with a smaller screen after this.

Best phone I have ever owned. My last phone was the Desire HD and I actually don't notice the Note in my pockets as much as that phone. Its fast, light, great screen, good connection with 3g, wifi, bluetooth etc. Highly recommended.
Agree with all the comments cept I would add that it even fits in my skinny jeans pockets. Personally can't even imagine myself with an s3...

And why is that?
- It looks like something girls without tampons would use for a couple of days a month (pads)
- The specs doesn't impress me. I didn't expect much, but still.. Not worth it.

Speaker horn (or any other passive speaker device)?

I've noticed that speaker horns are pretty common and cheap for ipads/iphones but I can't seem to find any for the N7. My N7 is already loud enough but the tone can really vary based on how I've got it propped up.
Has anyone seen them for sale or know of a generic alternative?
Not seen one but it should be pretty easy to make one? I know that the sound improves markedly when I use my hand as a kind of speaker horn to guide the sound to the front.
Let's wait for some industrious N7 user to 3d print one up. Seems like a great idea.
Especially if it transforms the stereo speakers to work in landscape mode properly.

Exactly. And seeing the popularity of the N7, I'm surprised no one has jumped on this yet when they're ubiquitous for Apple products.

Something like this? It's okay, but the idea of the horn is portability. There are some horns that are actual stands but others are merely clip on devices.

That actually looks great, but I'm thinking something smaller and portable. For example, this was on Shark Tank last week and got me thinking about the whole thing: thesoundbender.com . I've seen other "horns" that literally look like gramophones sticking out of the side, and there are a ton on ebay, so I'm surprised that even after the market has had several months to port things over to this tablet that nothing has come about.
Try looking on kickstarter, you're guaranteed to find a ridiculous amount of those and stupid iPhone cases and stands that all do the same thing.
