Wifi oddities - Captivate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Has anyone ever experienced the inability to download pictures from SMS/MMS while connected to wifi? My buddy can send me a pic via messaging or chomp sms and once it gets to me, usually a long time later, I will get a small, empty chat balloon touch the balloon and it will give me the loading circle for a few minutes and it will eventually stop without dl'ing anything. If I turn off wifi then it will dl within seconds. This is the same on both my phone and my buddy's(captivate) the only difference is I run the Firefly 2.0.5 and he is running stock eclair.
Is this just something that we have to deal with or is there a fix for this?
I did a samsung live chat and the agent said it was the way samsung makes their phones and restrict it to only allow SMS/MMS DL from the carrier signal.
Thanks for any and all help.

mms are done over 3g, are you able to browse the internet on 3g? are your APN settings correct?

I get mms when on wifi too. I was home two days back when I got like 4 sms. And at home I'm always on wifi.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App

Never had a problem

MMS are only done over your carrier network. To prove this send your self an mms and as it is sending and receiving what your task bar and you will see that your data network connects to download it.

since the phone has to drop the wifi signal and connect to the carrier data signal to send or receive MMS (it might not show in the icon though), yours might be lagging somewhat in doing that...
so when the buddy is on wifi his one does it quicker yes?

Yes can browse the internet while on 3G and WIFI.
I do not know if my APN settings are wrong or right.

No, in reference to the way the devices act both do the same thing. Do not allow you to DL MMS while the WIFI is turned on. neither seems faster or slower it just will not complete the task on wifi.
Thanks to all for the replies

I checked it 2 days back. Even when on wifi, it turns on EDGE/3G, downloads MMS and disconnects it.

So is there a setting that I need to look for that allows for the edge/3g to turn on/off for mms?

Anyone?
Would love to figure this out as it is quite annoying.

Dialed: wap.cingular
it says underneath it there is no modem at the above number.
ummm.... I didn't change anything in my setting but for some reason it won't connect to the 3G network. Any ideas here or do we know whats going on?
thanks for the help.

OK check this
START/SETTING/CONNECTIONS/MANAGE EXISTING CONNECTIONS/PROXY SETTINGS
and make sure that there is not a Check in the box next to :
THIS NETWORK USES A PROXY SERVER TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET
This should do the trick I hope.
This always happens to me.
didnt work
no dice. its still giving me the same bounce back message that theres no modem at the above number. do i need to put a proxy server in the proxy server field? by the way this is a Tilt.
What program is trying to access the internet when this happens?
The same problem is occuring for me. I tried what Vol22002 suggested, but still can't connect. I was trying to access Internet Explorer.
Me Too - Atlanta
First thing this morning I tried to access the Internet with Opera and got the "Dialed: wap.cingular Cannot connect for unknown reason. ..." error. No recent changes to phone configs or software, worked fine after midnight last night. Power cycled and checked the usual stuff, still no data connection regardless of program.
Not Me Too Anymore - Atlanta
After not working from 0700 to 1050, I 'suddenly' have a working data connection. Go figure.
You'll probably find that this happens when your network is down. This happens very occasionally here and then I call my service provider to confirm this.

I would say that is the most common reason for the problem the OP is having.
the netowrk isn't down....
My dad's phone (not a tilt) is connecting to the 3G network completely fine. I can't access the internet through any program...internet explorer, opera, google maps, livesearch, the weather tab on my today screen...nothing. I'm at a loss right now.

So Disable the Proxy.
still nothing...with or without the proxy on.
I've been having problems with my data connection and phone service dropping out for the last 2 weeks even though I have changed nothing on the phone. I see an x by data connection and exclamation point by phone. I'm using Dutty's 6.1 official release and radio 1.58.26.20. Usually I can get back service by turning on and off airport mode, and the problem is very sporadic. Usually only when I really need the phone to work! Sometimes just switching between GSM and Auto mode for 3G will provide a temporary fix. I just tried disabling the HSDPA, and we'll see if that helps in a more permanent way. I wonder if AT&T is kicking people off of its network that are using HSDPA before it is supposed to be available. I called AT&T about the issue (w/o mentioning the cooked ROMs or HSDPA and they say I should return the phone for warranty but I don't want the hassle of restoring the old ROM. Any ideas?
is everyone posting here with issues from ATL? I am and have had the same, figured its just a radio issue and have been too lazy to change radios...for those that aren't lazy, i'd try that...
nope, I'm in Oregon. I'm of the opinion that AT&T has changed something about how they run their phone and data networks (perhaps in preparation for the 2nd gen iphone and HSDPA) that is randomly kicking people off their network.

There goes the iPhone messing with Smartphones again. First changes what a Smartphone should be. NOW messing with the network. Hulk Mad!
Nope its not just AT&T im experiencing the same problem over in the UK. Now my proxy is disabled and I know I have all the correct settings but still the error message "unable to connect to the receiving modem." It seems to have no pattern for this happening con we get correlation on what ROM's & radios everyone are using to see if its that

[Q] How can I remove internet?

Hey guys the G1 data plan is getting too expensive for me and I'm planning to cancel soon. After I call in and cancel, how can I get my G1 to stop trying to access the internet unless its Wifi? Or once I cancel I won't have to worry about this?
I also heard a rumor about changing the APN settings so you can still have and use the internet? Is this true?
no real way to stop the phone from accessing the web since even in the background it sends packets of information. that's just how the phone works that's why you need the data plan for this phone.
i want to cancel the plan cause my sis is paying for mine and i dont want her paying 300$+ a year on me. but i dont want to be charged after i cancel the plan cause my g1 is still accessing the internet. Anyways to prevent it from accessing the internet?

i just said no there is no way to to shut off the internet due to the fact that the phone requires you to have a google account to run it even if you flash a adp build and skip the logon proceedure the phone still access the web in the background without you knowledge you will still get billed for data charges at t mobs data rate which i think is 25 to 50 cents per meg used.
disable auto sync
if you disable auto sync you wont be accessing the internet much (assuming you don't have a ton of news widgets or something) then sync when you're connected to wifi (toggle settings works well for this)

the problem is even with auto sync off the phone still polls the internet in the background for updates and other things you could remove every internet reliant app off your phone and it still polls the internet it just the way android is designed he want to stop all internet traffic which is impossible without hacking the rom beyond what we do or pulling out the sim. even google maps requires to poll the internet in the background without him even turning it on. it's just impossible to stop it completely.
Install APNdroid.
Easiest, simplest, most reliable way: Go into settings>wireless controls>Mobile Networks>Access Point names, then click on each one and hit menu then delete. You will also need to finangle with tmobile through their customer service number in order to get them to cancel 3g for your G1 (they have some kind of a policy that's supposed to mean that you have to have an unlimited data plan with the G1, but if you're patient with them they'll let you cancel and just have voice.)
Even easier way. Download Toggle Data from market. That's what I've been using since I cancelled my plan. No more data in the background, so my battery life is longer. Sometimes my phone goes like 2-3 days without charge. (Of course without using wifi)
apns not only control how the phone connects to the internet it also handles how it connects to make calls which is also how it connect to edge/3g. so see the conundrum we have here removing all apns also kills making calls.
Before I bricked my G1, (I don't have a data plan) I just went to the T-Mobile store and told the guy what I could do to stop the internet. He just changed some kind of port number and stopped the internet so I don't get charged.

i wasn't talking about apndroid
i was talking about the guy who told him to delete all his apns
if i use apndroid will i still be able to use wifi? also im using a JACHero's rom and i noticed this in the settings...
Data Sync > Google > Background Date Usage [X]
APN Droid only kills the data.

No, the APN controls cellular data (internet and MMS) only. Voice and SMS are "built in" so to speak - as long as the SIM matches yoru carrier's records, they will work.
Deleting the APNs (or using APNdroid) will block cellular data, leaving voice, SMS and WiFi internet unaffected.

Loose 3g data when Wifi is enabled with CM6.RC1

There have been a few discussions about this, but I have yet to find a solution that works for me...
I flashed CM6 today and now I'm finding that when I enable wifi, my 3g data connection is lost. Not sure this is really a CM problem, I just want to find a fix.
My setup:
Nexus One - CM6.RC1 - FRF91

what do you mean it's lost.. when you're turning Wifi on, that's the whole point (that you want to use your Wifi connection for data, and not your mobile 3G data.) Maybe I'm not understanding you?

Even with wifi on you still need 3g data to send and receive MMS. I can't replicate this problem, though, so I'm afraid I'm not much help. All I can suggest is trying a full wipe of everything but battery and rotate stats and try to flash it again. See if that helps.
It works fine for me. Are you sure you are confussing not having both icons in the notification bar with 3g being off?
I answered this question a few months ago too.
Your 3g is not lost, it just hides the icon. Go into settings and look what network you are still connected to for yourself, it will still say 3g. If you were to send or receive an mms the 3g icon would briefly pop up, send the message, then disappear. Your phone is working just fine
thanks for the help... @roger, you are correct, i didn't realize that the icon was hidden vs. actually turned off, nor did i think to go check the actual service rather than rely on the icon

Having trouble with MMS. (Picture messages and group messages)

I have had my phone since the release date for Verizon. The only problem I have with it is I do not receive my MMS messages at all. I leave my data off whenever I have access to wifi. My old Droid Razr would send me a message saying I had a message from someone and needed to download it. But on my Moto X I do not recieve any messages and then when I turn on my data, I will randomly get 4-5 messages from the group/picture message.
Are there any settings I can change to fix this?

Why are you turning off your data? My phone goes well over 24 hours with every single thing enabled and heavy use. There's no reason to turn it off.
I have the same issue too with my Moto X. I leave my data off because I have not an unlimited data plan. I am from At&t.
If someone can help, it would be great.

I agree that the battery life is great. But does it use extra battery to leave data on while on WiFi?
I read somewhere that to fix you need to send yourself an email with a picture attached on gmail. However I am still unable to send while on WiFi.
This is a CDMA limitation and I am unaware of a workaround. If you turn off your data, you will not receive MMS messages.
Try leaving on your data, or switching to a GSM carrier.

Nope. The data portion actually gets turned off in software if you're on WiFi until there is something (MMS) that needs it. You will save nothing, and waste time turning mobile data off every time you get on WiFi.

THIS. You need to leave data on if you want to receive MMS. The system handles data very well and will only turn it on when needed while on wifi

Good to know! But I need mobile data turned on to send an MMS when connected to WiFi? Does this mean it still uses my mobile data?
MMS doesn't count against your data. It goes over your data connection but is not counted towards your limit.

Correct. MMS = picture messaging. That's how feature phones with no data plan can still use MMS.

I noticed a similar issue recently when I turned wifi and mobile data off.
I was troubleshooting a problem where Google Messaging had a running service "Messaging Transaction Service" that was holding a wakelock for hours causing increased idle battery drain. Using WLD I saw the wakelock was related to MMS, so I turned on my mobile data. This didn't immediately help, so I forced close the Messaging service, and I then immediately received the MMS. Up until that point, I had no notification that a MMS was pending.

Just to correct you. this is not a CDMA limitation. This is how all iOS and android smartphones work by design. MMS messages are sent through data, they do not use up your data allotment for the month.
Only time MMS would work with data off is if you have a wifi calling app such as the one some tmobile phones have. It does not exist for the moto x.

[HELP] No MMS when connected to Wifi

For some reason, and I'm not sure when this started but I can no longer send or receive MMS messages when connected to my wifi. Right now I know this happens at home but haven't checked other wifis. I've been googling for answers but haven't found anything real to help remedy the situation. Has anyone else had this issue? if so, how to fix?
Thanks, in advance
MTA: I've noticed that connecting to wifi my mobile data is being disconnected/turned off. Don't remember setting this in anything but it's happening nonetheless. bothersome.
Mobile data is needed for MMS to come through. I used to use Tasker to disable mobile data when I was on wifi to save battery, but stopped doing it because it blocks MMS. I tried using Tasker to enable mobile data for 5 minutes upon receiving an MMS, but it was a little hit or miss.
If you are using a battery saver app, it could be turning your mobile network off to save battery for you, so check there first. I don't think there are any stock settings for it that would do that, but who knows.

I'm not using any battery saver/task killers/ yadda yadda.. I don't even know when it changed. It's completely doing it on it's own. As soon as i connect to a (W)LAN the 4G dims out and I lose mobile data.
I'm running rooted 4.4.2 and have never taken an OTA update. Nothing in xposed anywhere to change this either that I can figure. I'm completely stumped.
If the 4GLTE icon turns from a "bright" gray to a darker gray, this should be OK. If it disappears completely, that would be OFF or not connected at all. I have Verizon, and that's how mine acts. I have an Xposed module to use AOSP icons in the status bar, so mine just says "LTE" right "above" the Wifi icon instead of next to it, to take up less space.
I do have issues from time to time where MMS will just not download properly. Not sure what causes it, but it goes back to normal after a while.
Solved
Ok I've figured this out as I have finally been able to reproduce the problem.
I'm running privoxy on my home lan and if I set the proxy manually on the phone it will choke privoxy up, literally. I can sit here and watch the CPU usuage just climb on the router. If I disable the privoxy proxy on the phone the message goes right through.
