Ok so I posted a thread earlier about how my usb drivers arent working at all so using odin to flash back to stock is not an option. I did however successfully root and install andromeda without them. Now heres the problem, I backed up the stock rom using rom manager. Anromeda installed a kernel and modem so I cant use rom manager to back up the rom unless I get the kernel and modem back. My question is could I somehow find the stock kernel file and use neldars sgs kernel flasher to flash the kernel back while still using the andromeda rom withouth having any problems? Also, will the modem affect my rom at all because I will change it as soon as i switch roms
H you can not flash a 2.1 Kernel on a 2.2 rom
Not sure what you are looking to do though
Im looking to install a different rom the problem is that I cant use odin because of the drivers not working. What im trying to say is if i flash the backup stock rom from rom manager its going to cause problems because its using andromedas kernel right?
Let me put it like this...is their another way to flash back to stock without using odin and without using a usb cable?

yes. you will need a CWM flashable zip of a 2.1 kernel and modem.
you would boot into CWM, flash that zip that includes kernel and modem, then restore your nandroid backup
ok thankyou!!! Ill try and locate the files myself but if anyone knows where they are and can tell me would be much appreciated.
why dont you just flash a 2.2 kernel with built-in clockwork mod recovery? you dont have to keep the kernel that came with your rom...
so... use sgs kernel flasher, why not? flash a new kernel then boot into its recovery (usually thrugh the power button menu on custom rom/kernels)...
Because I'm trying to install another custom rom, if i install a 2.2 kernel then flash back to.the stock rom which is 2.1 wont that cause problems?

Search jh7 ota design gears posted it a while back. Just must disable all lag fix before flash
ok so i found the file do i go into recovery and reinstall packages or choose zip file ?
With lag fix disabled
Select zip from sd, choose zip, jh7, confirm
Thank you man, helped out alot

Why bother flashing back to stock at all? Just flash the new Rom and save all the headaches having to screw with lagfix.

A better option would be to borrow a friends computer for a minute and fix everything properly...
If I flash a new rom while using Andromeda instead of stock wouldn't that cause.problems on the phone because of the.files being.mixed.or something

My phone is rooted and unlocked.

Exactly i am in leaked froyo ji6. I rooted it.
You have two options. Swap in a kernel that has 2e recovery or flash back to stock and then flash the rom of your choice.

What he said. I would use odin to flash stock

The version you are on had a recovery that prevents you from using clockwork

Hello Guys Hopefully somebody will be able to help me out. I have recently updated my Captivate to Froyo and re-rooted it with no issues. I have sense attempted to make a backup from cwm recovery and I am not able to get to it only just the stock recovery mode. I reinstalled cw recovery and that didn't work so I reinstalled rom manager and reinstalled cw recovery to no avail couldn't get into it. So i rolled back to 2.1 thinking it may be an issues with 2.2 even though I was sure how it was possible and im back to square one. I am still unable to get into cw recovery. yes the phone is fully rooted and i have also did a fix permissions and it completed sucessfully and tried to reinstall and it still doesnt work. Anybody got any suggestions?
Thanks
You either have to switch kernel our flash back to stock then load a custom rom.
You should be able to swap kernels using
Sgs kernel flasher app from market, or odin. You would have to figure or which kernel you want to use

THANKS! mcord sgs kernel flasher did the trick.

If you can get in to download mode, then you can use Odin or Hemidall. Most roms will root you automatically.
Not really. Not many roms are odin/heimdall. You need to root and install cwm to be able to install a custom rom

no you dont.
if you are on 3e recovery, then you just need to flash a kernel via ODIN that has CWM built in
CWM has nothing to do with root. on galaxy S devices it just creates an update.zip file
Rooting your stock ROM is actually not required to install a custom ROM, depending on which ROM you are installing. For some, all you would need to do is place the Clockworkmod update zip on you internal sd, along with the rom you want to install, then boot into CWM using 3-button combo, reinstall packages twice, install zip from sd and that should be it.
However, there are some details that you may encounter such as:
If you are on stock 2.2 you have to get around 3e recovery which wont allow you into CWM recovery without a hack. Or you can flash back to stock 2.1 to avoid this problem entirely (using ODIN3 1 click, if you know how)
This simple install is really for custom Froyo 2.2 ROMS, which looks like what you should be doing anyway if you have to ask this question.
Just READ as much as you can before you do anything.
If you simply dont like the idea of having root privileges you can remove root after installing a custom rom. I have done this for my friends in the past so they dont go do anything stupid on accident. There is a 1-click root/unroot app floating around the forums for the galaxy S that has worked for me on all 2.1/2.2 roms but never attempted with gingerbread as I use root and haven't flashed a friends phone in a while.
How do I flash different ROMS to my Captivate using stock out of box 2.2 ?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda premium
which rom do u want to flash? The easiest way is
Download and place ROM on your SD card
Download a custom kernel which includes CWM support.
Flash kernel.tar using ODIN to get CWM
Reboot into recovery and select Install zip from SD card.
Find your ROM and flash it
Op fyi That is if you're flashing a froyo(2.2.x) rom. A gingerbread rom (2.3.x) would require a step before the custom rom to flash gingerbread bootloaders with odin.
If you flash a gingerbread rom without the bootloaders first you will not be able to boot into recovery you will just get a weird scrambled screen.
OK I used ROM manager but I think I had a bad flash how do I redo the flash

Is Fasty 2.5 a Froyo or Gingerbread ROM?
Edit** Never mind, it's a 2.2 ROM.
You don't use ROM Manager to flash the ROM. Simply put the ROM on your SD, boot into recovery(Volume up+down+power), install zip, choose zip to install, select your ROM, and you're off
I haven't been able to connect to a PC for a couple of weeks. At first I thought it had to do with a ROM I installed but I've since flashed a few Roms and it still doesn't work. Of course I've tried the obvious, reinstalling the USB drivers, kies, a few different PC's etc. My last hope is installing the original rom (2.3.4) that came with the phone from my cell provider but as mentioned I can't connect to a PC to use Odin. I purchased Odin mobile for that purpose but it gives me the message that it doesn't work with CM based Roms because of it's partition layout. I'm out of ideas. Anyone know a ROM that will work with Odin mobile or have any other idea that might work?

you can flash any samsung based GB rom and then try installing the drivers..
SAUROM JW8 ROM is the latest updated one I think..
I'll give that a try today, thanks.

I checked out that ROM and it says that I first need to flash a stock GB ROM first since I am on JB. I can't do that without Odin of course. So what do I do?

My I9000 refused to be recognised by Windows but would still charge via usb. Only fixed when I physically pushed the connector inside the usb socket up slightly with a thin knife. Works every time now with Odin and mounts as mass storage.

First flash CM7 and the flash stock based rom.. for flashing CM7 follow the following steps:
wipe data, dalvik cache
flash CM7 rom
reboot recovery (if after rebooting recovery doesn't start don't worry.. just try the three button combo and it'll start - This is because of the change in partition layout in CM7 rom and present JB roms)
flash CM7 again
reboot
Now you are on CM7 GB rom and you can flash anything you want.,, the same steps can be done to flash stock based rom directly from JB rom but I prefer going to CM based roms first as they are closer to AOSP.
Having same problem on Epic 4G
