Helo All,
I have motorola milestone running on 2.1, After several days of work I am able to know how to root it, how to flash Only-Recovery SBF file and finally able to go in open recovery. My question is can any one tell me how can I load custom rom from open recovery ? I am trying to load MotoFrenzy Android 2.2 FroYo and according to the article which I am following I need to copy the rom into /nandroid/adbrecovery folder on your SD card and use the restore option via nandroid in open recovery. but when I did this I can only see there to restore the backup which I have created. Can anyone pls guide me on this. I dont need any links if anyone have enough time pls reply me here the process also tell me which is the bestest Froyo Rom to date for Motorola Milestone ?
Thanks in adavcnce guys for your help
Imran
I think the path /nandroid/adbrecovery/YourROM/ is the old directory structure.
In the newer Open Recovery, you would put it in /nandroid/openrecovery/YourROM/
Note that "YourROM" is a folder
if you dont understand u could make a backup from your current rom and then u can see the path in /sdcard/nandroid/open recovery
Thanks guys now I can see Motofrenzy.zip into restore options but I have tried to restore the ROM after wiping data, cache and Dalvik cache. Its did the processed in 2 sec and show me message restore done successfully. But when I have rebooted phone its has the old Version nothing happenned any idea ?
Thanks
Imran

I am not overly familiar with Motofrenzy, but are you sure it is a nandroid backup? If so, did you extract from the zip?
A Nandroid backup (to be restored from the nandroid menu) is supposed to be a folder with .img files and MD5 hashes.
Most ROMs in .zip format are to be flashed from the UPDATE from zip file menu of OR. These files belong in the OpenRecovery/updates menu.
Please double check your instructions. I dont think you can nandroid "restore" a zip.

Just check motofrenzy instructions. It is a nandroid backup and you need to extract the folder (not place the zip) in the right folder (listed in the threat). Ths instructions are using the older folder tree.
Motofrenzy updates are flashed in the update.zip format, but there are none at the moment.
Crazy question: why that ROM? I know nothing about it but the instructions look dated and the thread doesnt look very active anymore?
Why not the recent froyo leak or CM6/CM7?

Thanks for the help brother. I flashed the first rom in my milestone regarding the rom I used it just to know that how to flash a custom rom on it regarding the rom Can u pls give me the link of latest froyo leak or CM6/CM7 Rom ?
All of those ROMs have their own threads in the dev section of this forum. Just look at the first page of each thread for instructions.
The motorola leak is a nandroid backup, but it is not a custom rom. The most popular custom rom is probably cyanogen mod (CM).
V6 is based on froyo, v7 on gingerbread. V6 is supposedly more stable, but most ppl are reporting good day to day use in the CM7 thread...it is what is have been using for 2 days.

I have a captivate i896 and i ran into some problem flashing cognition onto my phone. So now all I can do is use odin to flash the stock i897 rom onto my device.
The problem with this is and the cognition roms are that I have to mobile data connection (but i have voice) on these roms. I cant access 2g/3g data, does anyone know how to fix this?
But my main question is how to restore the stock i896 rom back onto my device.
When I use rom manager to try to flash the stock rom found on this page (hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-I896) it just doesnt work. Maybe im going something wrong, but I cant seem to get it to work.
That file is not a rom, its a backup that you need to restore with rom manager. Copy it to your sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/rogers_stock directory and restore it with rom manager.
If you want the actual rom get this http://www.megaupload.com/?d=BD2EF4WF

Ok so i tried flashing this rom
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=03X7E4UW
which is suppose to be the stock rogers captivate rom with rom manager.
However when i do so, after selecting the .zip file in cwm it gets up to "installing update..." with a empty status bar at the bottom.
I left it there for about 30 minutes and it didnt change.
Can anyone help me get back to stock i896!

Read my post above, you need copy the images to the sdcard and restore them, not install the zip file.
I'm really interested to know if those backups and stock roms actually restore you to stock. The first phone I had got soft bricked when I tried to restore the backups I had made from by own phone. So if this works for anyone I'd be really interested to hear about it

You could also try using Heimdall, new Open-Source Flashing Software and this dump generated from stock Rogers phone.
I haven't seen any reports of tests on Captivate yet, but it seems to work well on other Galaxies. Check Heimdall thread for more info, and if it works well for you, please report to this thread. Good luck!

The above link is a guide to rooting, installing vulnerable recovery and instgalling ROMs. 2.3 ROMs are not any different. Do the first steps and then choose a ROM (I like CM7 ) that uses 2.3.

Firstly, you must flash G.O.T 2.2.1 then you can follow some 2.3 ROM in this thread. I have try CM7, HO!NO!, ShadowMod, ... you can try theme
after flashing with G.O.T 2.2.1, that means that I have now the android 2.2 ? because if so...that would be enough for me now, I just want to install applications on SD card, ....as in android 2.1 is not possible.
Yes, you have 2.2 and rooted phone.
Worth a look at the 2.2 or 2.3 roms and themes though as once you are rooted it is just a case up putting the zip in the right directory of your sd card and installing it in openrecovery

ok. After reading the forum about rooting i have some questions.
I have downloaded from GOT homepage the RETAIL EUROPE (RTEU) fireware. According to the guide...first I have to flash with rds light the GOT_RTEU_2_2_1FULL and then with 'G.O.T OpenRecovery V2.0' root the phone and then apply custom roms.
My question is that I do not have to wipe data + cache + dlavik cache before applying ANY roms, lik 'GOT_RTEU_2_2_1FULL' - and this meaning that i have to instal first 'G.O.T OpenRecovery V2.0'.
By flashing with rds light 'GOT_RTEU_2_2_1FULL' means that I didn't apply a rom?

SBFs are usually a bit different then normal ROMs. They usually wipe the entire phone and radio firmware and other stuff.
If you use and SBF file using rsd, you are now on a different motorola version/platform.
I would recommend NOT stopping there. The GOT sbf is a useful starting point because it does 2 things at once: the vulnerable recovery and the new radio files. But as an operating system...it is FULL of bugs. It is a motorla leak from something like october.
There have been MANY since then. I would apply CM6 or at the very least a more recent moto leak (the 1-25 nandroid wors very well).

where do I find CM6?
'HO!NO! CM6 mod by HO!NO! (As of now, this must be applied over CM6 as nandroid. Please ensure that the version of HO!NO! complies with whichever version of CM6 you are using. '
or 1-25 nandroid
i just need android 2.2 on my milestone 2.1 for now.
A stable version.

CM6 is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=784750
so first I flash with rds light 4.9 'GOT_RTEU_2_2_1FULL'
then install OpenRecovery-3_3
then use OpenRecovery-3_3 to upgrade 'update-cm-6.1.2-0.07-11.01.28-Milestone-signed' 0.07-11.01.2 and that should be it?
I'll start flashing...hope no errors
sounds about right
list of roms here

Just pick the 2.2 ROM that takes your fancy. 2.3 is still a bit bleeding edge so will have some bugs.

You are forgetting 2 important steps (read the CM6 install instructions)
1) Do a "WIPE DALVIK CACHE" and "WIPE CACHE PARTITION before installing CM
(you can do this from Open Recovery or Androidiani recovery).
2) You need to install the latest GAPPS for CM6 (check the CM6 guide for link) or you won't have Gmail, Market and all other Gstuff.
Hope this helps!
I do not find latest GAPPS for CM6. i found something on http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Latest_Version#Google_Apps , but i do not know witch should i download for milestone (medium-tiny (Tiny), medium (MDPI), or high (HDPI), and how to install it after download.
And market icon is not present into my meniu

You need the HDPI version. To install, simply put the zip file in the same folder as CM6 and and follow the same process. (Place in openrecovery/updates and use the install update.zip feature of open recovery.
You will have all google stuff after this.

1) i have never tried to change this setting. Best to ask in the question in the CM6 thread in the dev section.
2) if you want a consisent SDcard experience between wipes, look up the apps2ext module and feature (search the forum). It works better for this sort of thing. It is a non native way to store apps and data on the sd card (special ext2 partition) by tricking android into thinking it is writing to the internal storage.
By the way, no need to do a full wipe when upgrading a ROM. This is only recommend when switching ROMs.

Not all applications are recomended to install on SD. That cause problem and the phone restart eventually.
What the best 2.3 now on stone?
Hello,
Back in 2010, two months after buy my SGS, i updated from Android 2.1 to 2.2 using Kies.
I didnt lost any data in the process. But before i created a ROM image using ROM Manager.
But after the update i realised that my phone was now running recovery 3e, and when i tried to create a new backup i couldnt.
After that i just installed a tool named z4mod to convert the file system in order to incrase the performance of the phone.
And its running like that till now.
Now all i want to know is whats the simplest way (with minor changes in the phone) to go back to recovery 2e, so i could make a backup with ROM Manager for safety and update the firmware for the last version available in KIES, at least.
I there is a way to change just the recovery thats what im loking for.
Im running: PDA-JPA, Modem-JPP.

Just Save everything (use USB storage mode and copy paste entire SD cards to your PC, so you won't lose anything) Connect with KIES and upgrade to latest Gingerbread ROM, after that just download a semaphore kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112908 and Flash with Odin, should give you CWM recovery and Root..
Than you can copy back what you need from your PC,
The point is want to create a full backup (not just copying files) before update.
It's impossible?
I found this post: [recovery hack] How to get back recovery 2e

I will check it later today at home.
You got it from some thread in this forum or other?
Maybe you could share it so i could check it too.
I checked the link and i believe its not the same stuff mentioned in the post i found in the first place...
Can anyone give me some help?
thanks in advance.
Am on criskelo 11.2 with speedmod kernel 3.13.
All is fine, it appears I have root (titanium etc works) and a check with 'got root' returns an ok response.
The phone is behaving itself nicely and is nice and smooth.
The problem comes when I try and do a nandroid backup using cwm.
It gets a liitle way in and then freezes (forever!)
Things I've tried to cure this...
1) Rolling back to stock GB and then re-rooting, then full 3 wipes, then reinstall criskelo rom.
2) Rolling back to a pre-rooted GB rom, then all 3 wipes, then re-install croskelo
2) Flashing other kernels, notecore etc
3) Installing superuser 3.1.1.zip with cwm and its binary update.zip
4) Installing SuperSU app from play store - it says needs to update binaries, and when I try it just says 'installation failed!'
5) Installing superuser app from play, this time when I try and update binaries it does helpfully say ' remounting /system as rw... fail!'
which leads me to believe this is a root problem, even though no other app is complaining.
6) doing a search on this forum (before you all tell me to do this!)
I have been trying to solve this for over a week now, and it feels like I have read everything on this forum but I may have missed something.
Can anybody steer me in the right direction please?
Maybe you dont need a nandroid backup, it doesnt backup efs anyway.
Could be a kernel issue, or space issue. Not sure.

I am a heavy flasher and prevent issues caused by restores to get a clean taste of roms. Nandroids I tried, but I havent found a rom I wanted to go back on always, flash so much that it just takes to long.
Efs with a tool in one if my threads, suggestion by Chasmodo. DrKetan has a good toolbox thread in general section.
I manually backup photos and such with a file explorer. Calander/Contacts/email in gmail,
whatsapp and special app stuff also manually transfer folder from sdcard and back.
Messages I dont care for. Neither made calls list.
Occasionally I do restore app if dissapeared from market with Titanium, but only app, not data. I save backups on external. Cause I clean sdcard also.

The latest version for Note N7K is 6.0.1.2.. chek the below link... download option is there
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager/
jonny, i feel your problem is due to partial root.
could you copy files into system in root explorer ?
did adaway work in applying hosts file ?
for criskelo rom too you should choose CF root kernel during the flashing process, then later you may change to your preference
Thanks baz & nokia, much appreciated.
I am running PA 1.99 now and it has the new cwm (you can tell because it has a grey background now!)
And rraaka, you are correct, I cannot copy anything to system
Not sure how I can get full root back though, I have used Dr Ketans rooting tool many times to try and cure this issue as well as flashing pre-rooted GB roms with Odin.
Not sure what else I can do.
But am starting to agree with baz now, I can do without nandroid (it takes ages anyway) and just use titanium to restore.
Everything is working fine with my partial root (except nandroid) anyway so not sure I care anymore!
Am enjoying Paranoid Android by the way, JB is fun.
I do miss the samsung apps though, I don't suppose those have been jellybeaned yet??
nope not yet, nothing Touchwizz like spen etc.
There is a cwm flashable of samsung apps that works pretty good on cm9, not sure if it works on cm10 or jb.
gaining full root shouldnt be to difficult, update binaries and then you know for sure.
The one that has worked wel for me is the ssu only zip from this post but then again thats on stock stuff.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1841288
For custom roms/kernels the ones supplied with it are build in to work out of the box.
Once fully clean install, a nandroid can work but thats fully clean

Thanks baz, am going to go back to the start (stock ICS) and try that link to try and get my full root back, looks interesting.
Ok, I have full root again now!
here's what I think I remember what I did...
Downloaded the first two Su & busybox zips using method1 on the link that Baz kindly shared with me and popped them on my sd card ready.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794
Downloaded and flashed the latest UK Carphone Warehouse stock ICS rom with odin.
Rebooted to stock recovery - applied update zip - flashed first the SU and then Busybox zips downloaded earlier.
Rebooted phone to check all was ok.
Located superSU app and ran it to check - and first it said it didn't recognise my phone model, hmmm...
So I downloaded mobile odin from play and flashed abyss 4.2 kernel
Rebooted to recovery, full 3 wipes and rebooted system.
Ran superSU again and magically it updated binaries and for the first time in 2 weeks it said 'sucessful', I was very pleased!
Rebooted to recovery and flashed Criskelo 11.2 again (have gone back to this from PA until things are a bit more stable)
Restored all my apps from TB all good.
Checked Adaway and it was more than happy to replace host file, and root explorer is also happy.
Cool
Hello,
A few moths ago i bought my first android device, the Galaxy Note. With time, i learned about rooting and instaling roms. I finally decides to root it, but i have some questions about it and i hope you could help me.
For root it, i will follow the steps of this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1329360
And i choose to root stock ICS with safe kernel (what does that mean? I search but it's still not clear to me)
There, it says that i have to download a file according to the installed rom here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1901191
The info of my note is:
ICS 4.0.4 N7000XXLRB
Kernel 3.0.15-N7000XXLRI-CL811902
So according to the second thread, one of the following files should work:
XXLRK
XXLRL
XXLRT
XXLRU
XXLRW
But I don't know exactly which one? Does it matter?
Now, evidently after this i will try to flash a rom (after i learn how to do it, altough i already have an idea, i just have to choose the rom)
My question here, is it possible (before flashing the new rom) to backup the actual rom? (not necesarily the apps since i can install them again) so i could install it afterwards in case of anything that could go wrong or if i don't like the new rom, etc. I guess that a factory reset with the flashed rom will not work.
I hope you could help me.
BR,.
Check the build number of your rom in about phone section ...check the last 3 letters and choose the kernel from the 2nd link you provided.
put it on ext sd and flash from stock recovery and done,
done you boot .. again boot into recovery and this time you will see cwm-philz.
go to backup and restore and do a backup ... this will backup your entire ROM all apps and data.
Hi, thanks for your answer.

BR,
It's the last 3 letters not start 3 letters. So if you rom build number is LRK then LRK. You have not mentioned your rom build number. There are no options.
Yes once backup done, you can follow the procedure and flash custom roms

I see, but the author of that post said that you can mix builds as long as they are similar, like LRK with LRI or so... but not LRK with ABC for example... that's why i asked that... And what do i do if my buid number is not there?
Yes that's true. Ics kernels are compatible with other versions too. Like ddlr9 can be used on xxlrt
i see, but then wich one i choose, or i can use any?

Hello, I just root my note... :victory:
Now, I tried to do a backup, but i got an error... i think that's probably for lack of space in my external sdcard... i just have a little bit under 500Mb...
How much space will the backup take? Can i do the backup in the sdcar in the phone?
Could depend on data
Stock ones are usually 700-1Gb
Choose the option of backup to internal sd

I guest i must not touch the blobs folder, but cai i delete the backup content, i'm guesing it contains the failed backup i just do...
After freeing space (2.5Gb free) int the ext sdcard, i've trying to do the backup, but know i get this error...
backing up data...
error while making a backup image of /data!
And it stops... I don't think is a space problem, right?
clear the memory so that there is enough space. delete the blobs and clockworkmod folder
boot into recovery. go to backup and restore and make the default backup format to tar and not dup. then do a bakcup
