[Q] Smashed Glass - Galaxy S I9000 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I dropped my i9000 Yesterday, and unfortunately the glass over the navigation buttons smashed (it is still fully functional and the screen is not broken)
is it possible just to replace the outer glass, and if so how much would it cost?
cheers

At work checking XDA lol.
you can replace the just the Glass with skill and luck but would void the warranty as the ebay part would be a fake.
As the offical part is most of the phone you only save the mainboard really.
If your in blackpool or by blackpool PM me and im sure we can sort something out.

Hey,
I did the same thing, got a replacement off ebay... the install isnt too bad... you just have to be SUPER SLOW when you take off the original screen from the navigation buttons (the buttons are like a sheet of wire which has been glued to the screen, removing is slow)
To be honest, i have replaced my screen a total of 3 times... The first time the screen replacement had a pink hue to it... I emailed the seller and he shipped a replacement which was fine... then i dropped the phone again and that stopped working, so i got a third which has been fine for the past 3-4 months.... well i guess it has been four times cause i replaced the second screen with the pink screen so i could have a working phone... then replaced the pink screen with the final good screen again.
but yes. the replacement screens on ebay are pretty cheap... a word of warning though, they are NOT gorilla glass, so no protection against scratches. and i am not sure if they are SAMOLED screens or not. they might be just lcd?

Cheap fakes on ebay arnt gorilla.
If you want a replacement its the full works. Most places will charge £120 for this. Where are you located?

Instead of trying to do it yourself maybe its better to have it done here.

Damaged Digitizer or LCD Screen? Help please :(

Hi,
Last night I knocked a small table and my girlfriends phone and a remote for the TV fell off.
We noticed that her phone now has a ring of black dots on the screen, mostly visible with a white background (E.G websites) but also from the home screen and the like.
We think she's cancelled her phone insurance, as she's never had a payment out to the company.
Can anyone tell me if its a Digitizer (What is one of these? Is it just the touch screen sensitive part of the phone?) Or the actual LCD Screen itself?
If you click on the photo it will load a larger image
Thanks for any assistance, kinda annoyed about this and wondering if I can repair myself with the parts on ebay. Or does anyone know how much HTC Charge to repair similar? Either in $USD, £GBP or €Eur, I can convert and get a ball park figure.
Hi
First of all is the phone still in warranty? If so take it back to an HTC dealer they should repair it for you for free. TD2 screens are not very good and it's a common fault. ( i had to have mine repaired after just only 3 weeks! )
The TD2 screen is made out of 2 parts, The touch screen or the 'digitizer' as you call it and a normal LCD screen underneath. You need to establish which has gone faulty.
If the touch screen still operates normally i.e the screen does not lock up or freeze and allows you to navigate normally then its the lcd screen below. If the touch screen is faulty one good way of checking is to put a piece of tape over the damaged area and try to lift it up a little to see if the marks / dots disappear and functionality can temporarily be restored.
Its hard to tell from your picture which it is..... sorry
I'm not sure how much a replacement by a dealer would cost, but i'm sure you can replace either yourself. ebay is a good place to look
Hope this helps.
I've had a reply from HTC UK who said the following:
That looks like there are a bunch of very small cracks in the screen. the black stuff is likely the Liquid Crystal from inside the display that has leaked out. If the dots get larger then it would definitely seem that the screen has got some cracks in it.
if this is the case, the standard charge for replacing the LCD is around £180 as sadly it is all one complete unit on the diamond 2, so it is not just the LCD underneath that needs to be replaced, but the whole screen assembly including the touchscreen layer and the actual LCD.
I hope this information helps you to make up your mind.
best regards,
Pete W

I'll see if I can find any HTC Dealer who will send it off on my behalf, but may just end up buying this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/LCD-Screen-Di...UK_Mobiles_Accessories_RL?hash=item588362a12d
Hi mate,
had the same problem...
the item you psetd from ebay is not the one you need to change.
you need a digitizer, not an lcd screen.
i got one from ebay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemVersion&item=290376721935&view=all&tid=393718237019), it includes both the lcd and the digitizer, you can check ebay to find other auctions offering the digitizer only.
you can change the digitizer on your own if you don't mind loosing the waranty of your phone.
cheers
Hi,
I had already found this: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Touch-Screen-...UK_Mobiles_Accessories_RL?hash=item5882e7ef74
Will buy in a bit, funds are a bit short today.
The Touch Screen's functionality hasn't changed at all though, no sticking buttons or anything. So I suspect that its the LCD Screen thats damaged but will follow you're advise as you're going to have more experiance than me (and its the cheaper part to begin with!)
Scrap the above post.. my g/f has just told me that the dots on her phone are bigger/worse. Looks like its the LCD Screen afterall
i still believe it is not the LCD.
the digitizer is actually sitted on a glass, and the LCD is below that. it is very difficult to harm the LCD. i also though it was the LCD (at least i wasn't sure which was broken) so i ordered both of them.
if you disasseble the phone you will be sure if it is the LCD or not.
i vote for the digitizer
good luck, if you need any help, i'll be pleased to help you..
Just to update, A few days after I posted and got helpful advice on here.. she called me up to say the dots have disappeared, and they have still gone now a few days after.
She said she put it in the office where she works, under a printer paper tray, and the office was warm. Something has (maybe only temporarily) fixed it.
I´m having the same exact problem my nephew dropped my phone, i already dissemble it because i was not sure of the lcd type, but when i looked at the digitizer i didn´t see any dots, so i´m not sure what to repair, TS or Digitizer, i allready tried with the tape to pull the digitizer, when it was apart i couldn´t see anything on the lcd no marks at all, opinions please.
cheers
Well F**K me! just bought a second hand diamond 2 to replace my xperia...
...seemed to work great checking it out... went home with the phone in my pocket... and as soon as I turn it on the touch screen doesn't work
dissected the whole phone only to discover the digitizer is glued to the bezel!
I ordered this from Ebay, will update if I got it working with the brand new housing + digitizer: http://cgi.ebay.it/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380166349182&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

If you can make some photos of the digitizer and the lcd dissasembled maybe, but It seems unlikely to break the lcd when you didn't completely trashed your digitizer.

Also the LCD didn´t had any marks at all, but i´m going to buy the TS+LCD and replaced by parts first the lcd because it´s a lot easier to replace then if the problem persists the TS.
I will post the result later when i get the parts to replace.

Can anyone confirm the above link as being both Lcd and Digitizer? I'm sure it doesn't mention it in the listing but the picture looks like it's showing both connectors.
Most likely only the LCD that's my conclusion if you look at the sellers store.
But to be sure e-mail the seller and ask.
http://stores.shop.ebay.co.uk/Elect...QQ_sidZ195653022?_nkw=diamond+2&submit=Search
Soooooo, as I've already posted here, My digitizer was busted on the phone I just bought... what I didn't tell was that I ordered a digitizer, then checked if I could remove it easily...came to the conclusion that I couldn't... and ordered a digitizer+housing so I could easily fit it on.
the mail brought me the digitizer today, and while knowing a better solution was on it's way I couldn't resist and try if I could make it work.
Turns out it super easy to seperate the digitizer from the bezel using a hairdryer (softening the glue) and a knife:
Take your phone apart, just the 4 screws, click the plastic center off it. Remove the digitizer cable, the touchscreen cable and the speaker cable.
now you are able to remove the green plate which holds all chips and stuff.
underneath that is the screen, lift it up gently going under it from the gap the removal of volume buttons leaves, put it away safely.
Now remove the speaker, the buttons under the zoom bar, and the power button(don't forget the the power button, and rubbery thingy that falls out of the bottom, the hole needs to be at the bottom when putting it back in).
your phone should be completely empty by now... just the front and the digitize glued together.
make the front of the phone reaaaaaaaaaallllly hot, put the knive between the metal and the digitizer (I started at the part where the zoombar is) and gently push it between the two parts... (from the inside of the phone to the oudside). Now just keep the whole thing above the dryer to keep it warm and slowly slice your way around the phone (no secret wires are there that you can cut through).
I used some random glue I had lying around to glue the front back to the new digitizer... perfect!
so the screen is like new now
ps bought this digitizer: http://cgi.ebay.nl/Touch-Screen-Dig...wItemQQptZPDA_Accessories?hash=item45eed6effc
Thanks for that jodeltje.
It sounds exactly the same as when i replaced the digitizer on an Omnia. Really not as hard as one might imagine. Taking your time and being careful are the most important things.
Hey guys,
I came into same boat last night.
Dropped my T-Mobile MDA Compact V from 2.5ft table, Backwards (Not towards LCD) and now it has black dots on screen. I guess the LCD has pressed backwards by chip sets.
Here is a screenshot.
I think its LCD damaged but I don't have cash to replace nor device warranty.
Do you think the problem solves eventually? Coz once I had dropped sony mobile and it too had same issue but solved after many days.
Hopefully it solves.
BTW; does LCD affixed to Digitizer? by seeing service manual, it doesn't look like it is. And I afraid to get cheap hongkong LCD screens for about 30$ since they won't be true quality display. i.e blueish.
Thanks...
Best Regards
hello CRACING,
sorry about what happened to you...
from the picture i can say that you have a problem with the digitizer...
your LCD is ok.
i tend to have this problem over and over again the last 1,5 years... i replace the digitizer (or the glass on which the digitizer is attached to) every 3-4 months..
yes the ones you get from ebay are not that good quiality, but well it keeps the phone working...
if you need assistance on replacing the digitizer, i can help you, by providing pictures and istructions...
cheers

Cracked Screen???

Damn it. I just dropped my SGS from about a foot and a half off the floor and the glass/screen cracked. The phone still works fine but I don't think I can live with it like this. Is it possible to get it fixed? How expensive an endeavor is it to get the glass replaced?
Edit: I don't know if it makes any difference but it's really just the glass that is broken. The display still looks fine and works fine. I'm not sure how these things are constructed and if just the glass can be replaced or if the entire thing needs to be changed. I'm worried that by continuing to use it and carry it around in my pocket that the display may become damaged.
What are the chances that I can get samsung or bell to replace it outright if I stress test it and the SD/motherboard fails again.

If you decide to change the screen on your own, check my thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=745262. Replacing my own screen thru repair service would have cost 250€ and by changing it by myself it cost 90€. These days you can get new screen from ebay with ~50€.
Where did you spend the extra 40€ above the cost of the screen? I've not read anything about the repair process but did find some ebay listings for replacement screens for $55, which isn't bad at all.

Phone was very new on the market when I bought the screen. That's the reason why screen cost 90€ then. 2 weeks after I bought it the price dropped to ~50€

Broekn screen is this all I need to replace??

Dropped my streak the other day and the screen is bleeding in the corner, still works perfectly but is annoying to say the least is this all I need to replace screen, and is it difficult? anyone done it before?

Congrats!! Tempted to break my screen to see how easy that is. Won't do it though. May buy a broken Streak from ebay to play.
It honestly is really easy, thought it was going to be a nightmare putting it back together, but its all made so well that there isn't any other way it can fit together. Was a bit scary when one of the motherboard clips flew off when trying to get it off and I couldn't find it, but after few minutes scouring the carpet I found it. But to be perfectly honest I could have put it back together without one of the motherboard clips, it was pretty secure.
I got problem to take off gorilla glass cos is stick by glue i think... should I use hair dryier to unstick it? or any other method?
You don't need to take the gorilla glass off, the whole thing comes out together, just use the prying tool to gradually pull it away from the casing
Job done, I didnt have my new screen yet but everthing is in piece now hehe one more question guys cos after the accident the screen was broken and touch didnt work at all in mine steak did might be a motherboard fault or digitizer ? ps. dell wasnt droped... was a bit bend , dell boots normally
No really sure, but the you get a new touch screen so guessing it would sort out your problem. Mine still work even though it was broke, so not defo sure to be honest.
I just had to replace mine again. I couls see the screen but only a small part of the screen would accept touching. New screen and all is good now.
I think you will be fine.

guys need help..i got the same problem with the lcd.so fragile, dropped not even 1 foot, and there's a black spot in my lcd.when i buy the lcd and the digitizer, does it comes with the gorilla glass???or just ordinary glass?
I am not sure what kind of glass the new LCDs come with. I will say that it is super smooth and I have yet to break the new glass and it seems to be fairly scratch resistant.
Is it gorilla glass, I cannot say.
yay had broken screen all fixed now wow that was nail biteing lol
replaced mine twice - very easy once you do it the first time - follow the ifixit video and go step by step.....second time - i did not even bother with the videa - its that simple really
I dropped my streak from about 2ft and the glass didn't shatter but the LCD was a mess
Just waiting for my new lcd/digitizer/glass to be delivered from ebay. I've already stripped my streak down ready. Not sure what to use to re-stick the glass to the main frame though. Any suggestions?

The glass to the mainframe just goes and stays in place with their respective clips - I did not use any. just used normal stick glue for the side bezels - have had no issues so far.

Glass separator?

Hey ppl I bought a nexus 6 about a week ago for $100 on eBay with a broken screen. It's 100% usable and works great. I'm thinking of repairing it but the stupid screen costs $200 to repair! So I was thinking to buy a LCD glass separator for $80 plus the actual glass for $13 and fix it my self for under $100. The thing is I want to ask if its even possible to do this? I mean if the touch screen is connected to the glass or not and if anyone had any experience/advice?

Just some first hand experience here with trying to separate the digitizer from the LCD on an LG G3... I've done a fair number of screen replacements before but this was my first attempt at a glued screen where I was really trying to save the LCD. Without writing a 10 page summary of all the problems I had, basically it comes down to trying to heat the screen with a heat gun was fairly inconsistent, as soon as I started to slide the separator in, I shattered the LCD. The wire method might be a little safer but if possible, I would recommend replacing the screen entirely if you can find one for a reasonable cost. You'll probably save yourself a lot of time, frustration and possibly some money if you do break the LCD by accident.

So I guess what you're saying is save the hassle and some money and replace the whole LCD, faster and easier.... Only people that done this method 100 times are able to do it efficiently I think because it sounds near to impossible for a newbie to do it

Its a pain I the ass without the proper tools. I tried it on my old S2's a few times and could never do it. For this job, $200 is money well spent IMO.
I tried to separate my broken glass from screen on nexus 6 and I broke the screen, it's veeeeeeeeeeeeery hard to separate glass from LCD panel. Fortunately in Poland screens are cheap and I bought whole original screen with glass for 400 zl it's about 50$.

Consider yourself lucky man, with the s**t digitisers we had on the nexus 4 any crack in the glass above the screen would result in an unusable touch panel. I understand that cracked glass is never a good thing but at least you can still use the device!
I don't want to sound like a d**k but the purpose of Gorilla Glass 3 is scratch protection, not drop protection. Moto just released a shatterproof phone for that if I'm not wrong.
Hard glass on unprotected edges is always gonna break.

Yea...
Well I can still use the device but I will replace all the front side:
Right now I have white front but the lab I send the phone has only black.
He will also replace the screen digitizers in case they got damaged.
I ordered a flip case from eBay, hoping that could save the screen (It sure could minimize the damage).

+1 on the flip case. Just make sure it's got a tpu shell around the phone, otherwise you won't want a drop while the case is open!

Well phone got fixed.
I don't like the black at all but that's what I have right now so I need to get used to it.
I hope I will be able to get along with the phone for one more year and then probably I'll replace it.
Right now he works really good.
It took the engineer to replace the broken screen with a new one about one hour and he always mumbled bad things about Motorola and how they build their phones.
He tried to put the back bamboo case to it's place and failed many times because the glue just won't work..
He told me to wait some time so the glue would get sticky to the phone itself.
Next time, I will buy a phone that have wider support in my country, make sure I have a flip case from the very beginning and make sure that you can unplug the battery from the phone.
That phone is awesome but has a quite long list of disadvantages...

Awesome that you could already have it serviced!
I see your point though, and I understand that in this thriving "free" market we can only choose the best compromise for our needs. I wouldn't buy a LG just for the removable battery and the repair support, but I can totally see why it looks like a viable choice for you right now.
As much as I like this phone, glue never looks like a good solution for pieces that are gonna be serviced sooner or later... As for the screen assembly, well, I guess every manufacturer now makes the digitiser and glass into one single part.
That being said, enjoy your moto and keep it for a while
