Custom boot sounds don't work with the cappy kernels that have a modded playlogo1 file, which we need to have custom boot animations, and all of the current dev kernels use. It just doesn't work.
If you build roms in the rom kitchen, you can restore boot sounds with sgs tools

ever wanted to flash back to froyo but didnt want to use the almighty odin? well here is a simple solution that should let u install froyo on a gb build without any errors
1.open the 2.2 rom you want to flash on the file explorer on your computer then click into the META-INF folder then com, google, android, and u will see the file updater script, delete that file (if u have problems getting that to delete use a program like winrar)
2.put the updater script u downloaded in replace of the old one (if winrar or any other program made u unzip the file and didnt zip it back up automaticlly make sure its done then place the file back to your phone and flash away
dont forget about the thanks button

My pc is acting up an i cant edit file so could someone make one for me an upload thanks button will be hit
This is helpful, but you have to know why first. The difference is the difference in the install scripts. In CWM versions before CWM3, we used amend scripting. Amend scripting is no longer supported in CWM3 and above, it now uses edify scripting.
Kernels that contain recovery prior to CWM3, you can flash the old scripts just fine. For example, cmenards latest JVQ based kernel supports both amend and edify scripting, and is based off CWM 2.5.x.x.
Its all in knowing what you are running, and what's compatible.
I wont get too preachy on this, but Odin is your friend, nothing to be scared or wary of, and with regular use to actually set you back to stock, will create a much better running environment for your Vibrant experience. Shortcuts around it will eventually cause all kinds of issues.

Wondering
Has this worked for anyone?
The OP missed some key points in this "guide".
If your zip file is using is using the old amend scripting, then there will be one file called update-script (not updater).
The newer scripts, edify scripting, uses two files, update-binary and updater-script, and you need both files if your kernel or recovery method is cwm3 or later, edify scripting only.
Or you could save a dev a future headache, and just use Odin.

You're talking about his last deadhorse kernel. That one, if memory serves me, even has a pre-kernel flash that you did through sgs kernel flasher, then the rom and full kernel. Coming from that one friend, I do believe Odin is your only option.

And if you can't, find a friend with a pc you can use for ten minutes.

I'm trying to mod an existing custom rom for my own use. Im just changing some pngs.
I unzip it, use formatter to change framework res apk to rar, unpack it. Change my pngs, repack it, use formatter to change back to apk. (Do I need to sign it?) Zip up the folder with 7zip, set compression as store.( is this correct) . But when I go to install it in cwm it wont install. I'm clearly missing a step. Someone please tell me what I'm missing or doing wrong. Thanks

How i can decompile system.ext4.img on windows? and how I can recompile?
I dont know for sure, it has something to do with a file called uyaffs if i remember correctly on windows. U can unpack it but if u want to do things about android it is best to use a linux os. It is much easier.

I'm on linux and use this to decompile : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=633246
Seems it works on windows + cygwin
Just put img files in the good folder and this tool will create meta-inf and system folders with everything inside
To recompile you may try this method :
- flash the compiled rom with cwm
- make a backup and you'll get an img file
Btw, dsixda's kitchen can deodex the rom too
Hope it'll help
Thanks

you find it?
download an app called ext2explore
That will enable you to view the image and then extract it if you want.
Is there any way I can get the android boot image installed on 2.0 so I can install it on 1.5? I tried to find where the boot image is stored on my 1.5 phone, but have not yet found it. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I want the little green android to put in place of the skull. I will also need instructions on how to switch the files. I tried to find an explanation, but couldn't. Thanks!

That is in the kernel...
You must change it in the kernel source, and then compile the kernel. Cam posted a tool a while back somewhere on the AOIP thread. You need a linux distro though

Damn. That sounds beyond my level of ability. I read about the tool, but couldn't find it. Thanks, anyway. Guess I'll just have to wait.
